OTRO/PATRIA

Rate this book
At a time in America where differences continue to further divide communities, OTRO/PATRIA attempts to explore how we find a shared experience. Unapologetic in its celebration of self, the author challenges the reader to see their own identity in others. As an immigrant that grew up with a blended experience, it is only because of strong sense of a patriotism that the desire for unity and acceptance is so prevalent in this work. "It's 2019, and we're still questioning a vision of America that neither warmly regards the other nor lives its ideals of patriotism. Chibbi provides a refreshing and entertaining voice to these questions, carrying readers across multiple fronteras of identity, personhood, family, love and country. Chibbi fought each word of OTRO/PATRIA over and over again and gave this collection the critical attention of a patriot." A collection of poetry about identity, sexuality, being an immigrant, survival, and hope.

from The Target Shoots Back: "like we tell women to avoid / catcalls lest they become // roadkill but how much longer will we let / a group of Jäger bombs in popped collar polos // wave their flaccid, unwelcome advances / like a get out of jail free card"

from Whose Right?: "Said a bathroom bully has the right to pray/and the right to prey/Who gets shot in the crosshairs/Who fires judgement/Where hate chooses to/Target/I act surprised;/I am not."

Chibbi writes from his heart, from this place of authentic amalgamation of the self. His words are genuine and simple enough to immerse the reader into the story. Every poem carries an emotion that cannot be combined with another; savor each poem before you go to the next. I love the poetry/I love the person. “His place in the world is where he’s always been. In just being nothing less than a miracle” (page 32)

An amazing collection of poetry that everyone should read. In each poem, Chibbi opens up to the reader and shares what the world is like through his eyes. The collection brings complex emotion, thought, and reflection for the reader to take with them after they read each work.
