ABOUT THIS EPISODE

A deadly, unstable shooter.

A trap Malcolm and Seong-Jae can't escape.

And more than one life on the line as they find themselves facing down one of the Golden Ratio Killer's proxies in a high-stakes hostage situation that could ramp up the serial murderer's mathematical body counts exponentially.

And if Malcolm and Seong-Jae aren't careful, they'll be among the tally.

While back home, Huang's life hangs in the balance—and Anjulie walks a thin line between justice and deception.

Everything's spiraling out of control.

And the more they fight to survive, the deeper they sink into a twisted game governed by not one, but two minds.

With Sila and the Golden Ratio Killer as the players...

Will our heroes end up as nothing more than pawns?

ABOUT SEASON TWO

Malcolm Khalaji and Seong-Jae Yoon are back on the case — and partnering with the FBI on a horrific serial murder case that will test Malcolm's faith and revive the darkest parts of Seong-Jae's past. With an enigmatic killer leading them on a wild goose chase through city after city and body after body, both Mal and Seong-Jae will find themselves pushed to their limits as they discover the worst of what humanity can do.

Even two minds against one may not be enough as they track the devious Golden Ratio Killer, and try to find the key to his pattern. But the trail of breadcrumbs left by the white rabbit will lead them suspiciously close to home, and a connection they never could have predicted. With their worlds exploding around them and everyone they know suddenly cast into doubt...

Can their partnership — and their love — survive the greatest trial of their lives?

Slender. Angry. (Part) Asian.

Yeah, that about sums me up.

Hi. I’m Cole. Xen. Whatever you want to call me; both are true, and both are lies. My pen names are multitudes, my nicknames legion. Tall, bi/queer, introverted author of a brown-ish persuasion made up of various flavors of Black, Asian, and Native American. I’m cuter than Hello Kitty, more bitter than the blackest coffee, and able to trip over cats in a single half-asleep lurch; I’m what happens when a Broody Antihero and a Manic Pixie Dream Boy fight to the death, and someone builds a person from the scraps left behind. Beardless, I look like the uke in every yaoi manga in existence; bearded or not, I sound like Barry White. About half my time is spent as a corporate writer, and the other half riding a train of WTFery that sometimes results in a finished book. Romance, erotica, sci-fi, horror, paranormal; LGBTQIA and cishet; diverse settings and diverse characters from a diverse author.

Sometimes I shout about things on the internet. Usually intersectional feminism and marginalized voices, and whomever’s punching down in those directions today. Sometimes human sociology, the psychology of sex and gender, and my own gender non-conforming arse (he/him, by the way). Sometimes I get really mad at Stephen Hawking and nerd out all over the place about hairy black holes, and believe it or not, that’s not a terrible pun or even worse innuendo.

That’s it. I’m a huge dork. My humor’s so dry it could empty oceans. I’m a native Southerner from the New Orleans area with zero Southern accent; I’m a mess of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-lingual influences; I have two cats. I wake up at daft hours of the morning to go running. I crochet terrible, lumpy things that never really turn into anything. I’m older than you think I look. I’m much more shy than my fury makes me sound (signifying gods only know what, but probably nothing). Recently I decided, at 36, that I needed to restart my life and move cross-country, so I tossed 75% of my possessions in the trash and randomly trucked it to Seattle. I’m in love with books and music and technology, and they war with each other for dominance and sometimes come together in a beautiful confluence. Most of the physical books I own are strange, obscure, out of print, overseas imports, or any combination of the four. Most of the physical books I used to own were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, and have been replaced with the infinite library on my Nook. My wallet has a dangerous attraction to anything with pages; it flirts and teases and gives its all, until there’s nothing left but emptiness and ruin.

There will always be things you don’t know, and I won’t tell.

But ask me late at night over live music in a seedy bar, and you might just get an honest answer.

Small announcement re: this book and preorders

*dusts off his GR login* Phew, wow, haven't been here in a while.

If you don't follow me on social media, you may have missed that I'm no longer doing preorders for this series (or at all), both because a.) I lost my preorder privileges for the next year for pushing CI S2E4 out too many times to handle quality control, and b.) I didn't fight it because I'm exhausted from racing that monthly cutoff for well into a second year now, and it's a relief to have a bit more freedom. CI episodes will still post monthly, but will just go live as soon as I'm done and without preorders.

I had already set up a preorder for CI S2E5 before Amazon's year-long ban on preorders, so they allowed that one to stay--but I'm still wiped, running on fumes after pulling an all-nighter, and the only way to make the cutoff to upload it to Amazon by 4PM Pacific today is to submit an unedited or only partially edited book. I'm not doing that.

We're kicking off Operation Fuck Preorders, Let's Go Wild a month early.

So if you preordered this book, the preorder will automatically cancel itself later today and you won't be charged for it. Once I run CI S2E5 through another day or two of edits, I'll submit it to Amazon again and it'll go live early under a new ASIN, probably on the 8th or 9th. I'll update the ASIN here and the link in the back of CI S2E4 when it's out in the wild.

Sorry, as usual, that I'm such a hot mess, but it's always a work in progress with learning what's sustainable in the long-term and what isn't, and continuing to crunch myself into a corner on these preorder deadlines every month isn't sustainable if I want to keep writing these books and releasing them consistently on a monthly basis. I always have this silly idea in my head that immensely labor-intensive things will get easier over time, vs. wearing me down more and more over time to the point where I just can't keep it up for years and over three dozen novels.

So in the interests of keeping the series moving, we're just making some adjustments to the delivery method and schedule, but still churning along. <3 Thank you for sticking with me.

Please excuse me while I go hide myself under a mountain of pillows for the next eight hours.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*I Think I Need A Break*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

I'm actually starting to get really bored. I don't even know why. I mean, I like how much closer Mal and Seong-Jae are, and how closer they get each book, but I'm starting to feel real detached for the story. I'm skimming more than I should. I think I need to have a break from this series. Just a couple of days. I am the kind of person who likes to finish a series in one go, but to give this series a fair chance, giving myself a break from it might be the best idea...

The Characters:
The list is a bit long so I've put it in a spoilers tag.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Contemporary Romance (M/M).
Series: - Series, Book Eighteen.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Malcolm ‘Mal’ Khalaji.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes, I think so.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Unsure.
Will I read this again in the future? - Unsure...
Rating - 3/2.5 stars.

Sempre me pergunto "quando vou enjoar dessa série? Love criminal intentions 🙏🏼❤️‍🔥🤩💯

This one was really intense!!!

When they think they're close to solve the case, there's always a set back 🤬
But the suspect list is getting shorter

But at least Malcolm and Seong are back on the tracks with each other.
More cliffhangers that makes me want to stop everything and just read all the books in a row.

His last thought, then, is of who will care of Moose and Squirrel.

He isn’t upset, not really.

Perhaps afraid.

Afraid of not existing anymore, afraid that when the darkness is complete he’ll simply stop being.

But he has himself, he has always had himself.

Michael is content to know that, since he has himself? He isn’t dying alone.

I don’t know why but I almost cried in this preview. It’s probably one of the least horrible deaths this season, but the victim really touched my cold heart.

“I love you.”

Seong-Jae looked at him for long moments, then closed his eyes and butted his head into Malcolm’s palm like a cat demanding affection.

“Thank you for that,” Seong-Jae said, low and with a subtle husky hitch. “Malcolm, I… I hope you are aware that you… you mean everything to me.”

I’m starting to think I’ll have to wait until next season for Seong-Jae to say THREE words. Seong-Jae, honey, is not so difficult! Stop making me Mal suffer.

Seong-Jae and Malcolm sat in the back of an ambulance, leaning on each other as if they were the only supports holding each other up -as if, should they let go, they might well both collapse. Somehow, though, together they were whole, a oneness apparent to anyone who cared to look; if the world operated on different frequencies, they were on their own, a single wavelength that they and only they shared.

WARNING: This is a completely emotional response to this episode.
No deep analysis. No comprehensive thoughts. No meaningful discussion.
Just plain irrational feels.

First: For the love of your own sanity:
DO NOT READ the preview for episode 6.
I usually don’t, but for some darn reason it happened this time.

Unless you love being in a state of wild panic and horror … Stay away from it! Particularly the last paragraphs. It’s good advice … believe me.

If you are going for it now anyway because you just want to know why I’m behaving like a headless chicken and totally OOC, please read Cole’s advice on his Q and A at the end afterwards. It might help you to cope just now.

After getting that off my panic-stricken chest, (and I do apologise for all the rambling) …

What about episode 5?

Malcolm and Seong-Jae are simply …

And holy f*** - THAT scene (you’ll know which one I mean) between them is sheer intensity and pure emotion, and hell of intimate and mind-blowing. The level of connection. The trust. The vulnerability. Darn. It also feels like a huge move forward in their relationship. And that happens after this ...

Seong-Jae and Khalaji sat in the back of an ambulance, leaning on each other as if they were the only supports holding each other up—as if, should they let go, they might well both collapse. the plot
Truly nail-biting stuff that had me on the edge of my seat from word go.
We get lots of different POVs this time, I think virtually all the important characters. And we’re left with as many little cliff-hangers, too. Thank you, Mr. Mc Cade!

Biggest surprise: Aanga Joshi. Darn, I actually felt for him. And that last scene with him. Omg.

Unbelievably good.
All of it.
(well, not the preview for ep 6… it's a huffy half-point off for that.
Don't judge me until you've read it!😉)

And a word to you, Mr. McCade ...
You asked for my faith - you have it.
You made a promise ... I am relying on you to keep it!

So, this is not really a review (did love it though) but is instead a heartfelt appeal.

Let’s Support Cole McCade!
Cole McCade has brought joy to folks all over the world with his gorgeous writing, especially with his Criminal Intentions series and our beloved Malcolm and Seong-Jae. What many fans might not know, however, is that he’s been struggling in silence for years while continuing to write. He is chronically ill, and has been working overtime and ghostwriting to make ends meet, but things have now reached a breaking point. He needs our support right now. He has never asked for it before, but he has finally reached out to ask people to subscribe to his ko-fi account. I’m including a link below and would appreciate you guys spreading the word.

Every time these men touch... just holding hands... i smile so much it hurts.
They give everything to solve things in the best way, even when it doesn't end well... and it leaves consequences for them. But they have each other, and I can't believe my love for them continues to grow. The intimacy between them is beautiful... and the damn scene that I couldn't believe was happening happened and it was perfect!!!

"Let me hold you. If you can feel nothing else... then at least feel me."

-I want Cara to be happy.
-The killer knows who they are now, and I'm very scared!! (I live scared between these episodes, lol).

It feels like a cop-out to say that this series is all the things but it's everything. Literally, completely, everything you could want to read. It's excitement, fear, crime, humor, amazing investigation, awesome friendships, love of all kinds, intimacy *my God, the intimacy!* heat, passion, sorrow, romance, I could go on and on. So ok, I kinda did but that's just me.

Every episode gives me heartfail of one sort or another but this one....I need time to recover. The knife edge you're kept on in this book is so so sharp that when you do get cut, it's hard to feel it happen. Yet, I loved it too. I can never get enough of Mal & Seong-Jae, not as themselves alone or them together. With every book I would swear it isn't possible for their relationship to deepen but it does, every single episode. That development, along with the development of every other player in this world is flat out awe-inspiring. Everybody is important to me, or if not exactly important, absolutely inspiring tremendous emotion of some kind. Or just plain loathed. *Lillian you bitch, I'm looking at you!*

And I don't want to feel bad for Aanga but I really do. I also don't want to fear for him but Oh. My. GOD!! O.O That last scene....*shivers* What scares me even more than that is that now Mal & Seong-Jae are also in TGRK's direct sights. I also have to wonder what Sila's end game is. Who exactly is he headed west for? There is so much to be afraid of for the future and we all know Cole McCade is just sadistic enough to enjoy torturing us like that. Just as we're masochists enough to be eager for it, LOL.

Oh wait....you thought this was going to be an actual review?? Hahahahaha, no. Rambling is all I'm capable of right now. I'm not sorry about it.

This series is something special. Don't miss it.

AGAIN?!!! SERIOUSLY AGAIN?!!! Ain't funny! And I'm two books to the end of what the author has out! And if he keeps giving me this cliffhangers I'm gonna have a heart attack. I mean seriously that ending?!! Like what the actual fuck? I need a minute, I need it to be a lie! People said you shouldn't read the preview of the book, I didn't listen, totally should have. DON'T READ IT UNLESS YOU HAVE TIME FOR THE NEXT!!

So important stuff:
- This was action packed, almost all happened around the movie theater hostage thing, it was tense, nail bitting, hair pulling stressful situation. Loved it!
- We got to know more about the killer, what happened and what he did with the guys who broke from prison with him, the fact that he does have some respect for children and that now he knows more stuff than he should. Can't say what he knows because is a spoiler, but if u have read it u know.
- I have questions as to why they haven't gotten this guy on camera since he goes everywhere without worries or why someone hasn't called him in just from his behavior, but I'm not playing attention to that little voice in my mind when everything else is so exciting!
- They shouldn't have let the news know about the case and the names of the people involved, that's gonna cost.
- Min Zhe's situation is sad, I hope everything with him and Sade will be alright, I think it will because u know, they are kind of second lead characters. The situation with Anjulie got clear, but the solution to it did not. Gabi is there being her mother hen self, she didn't do much so, there
- Adeleine was back, I love that girl, in the last one she didn't appear wich left me sad, she's a bright thing in this madness, her officer was there too and I really hope they work it out. Sten was there too and it hurts seeing her hurt, I really wich she can find balance in her life, for her sake and for her marriage.
- I still don't understand how Joshi thinks he was good or right for Seong Jae, I really don't, it just shows that he didn't know Yoon wich is what he finally realizes in this one. Thank the heavens for that, I was getting tired of his attitude.
- Seong Jae and Malcolm were perfect, no other word for it, that sex scene marked, for me, the fact that they are totally and completely ok again and will be. *swoons*

Just two books left, I don't know what I'm gonna do about it! 😫💔

Wow....again another fabulous read.

This picks up on the cliffhanger from the previous book. Malcom and Seong-Jae are trapped in a cinema.

There’s so much that happens here. Not just with Malcom and Seong-Jae but with everyone.

I’m sorry that’s it because the next book is waiting....

4 stars ⭐️ I thoroughly enjoyed reading this episode. One of the BEST episodes in season 2 so far. Gosh, this episode was beautiful, intense, and excellent. When Malcolm and Seong-Jae reached one more step closer to their intimacy, I grin like a fool. My mouth was aching by smiling. Seong-Jae was so emotional and honest with Malcolm more than ever. I love to see how much vulnerable he became in front of Malcolm so Malcolm can take care of him without breaking him. Isn't that too cute and romantic? The development of Malcolm and Seong-Jae’s relationship is perfect. Babies, You keep doing it very well. Hold on tight!

“We’re okay, Seong-Jae. We’re okay. We’ve got each other…and we’ll make it through.”

“I know we will, Malcolm. And when this is over, we will go home.”
And as he bent toward Malcolm, as soft lips claimed his, Seong-Jae whispered the one word that meant more to Malcolm than almost anything.
“…together.”

This episode was a roller coaster. Still, everything is jumbled and nowhere near solving the case. I really hate when every time, White Rabbit is one step ahead of Malcolm and Seong-Jae. What the hell Sade did?

This was why Malcolm made Seong-Jae so angry. And why Seong-Jae loved him. Because when it came down to it, Malcolm had the heart to do whatever needed to be done, without hesitation. He was the kind of person who would set himself on fire to keep someone else warm. The kind of person who would let himself bleed to save a life. And Seong-Jae would not let him.

Ughhh this episode was hard 🥺 It was really an emotional rollercoaster and induced heart-pounding anxiety at times. There's a lot going on with all of the characters and everyone is dealing with some tough shit.

I want to bubble wrap Malcolm and Seong-Jae and just tell them to sit still out of harm's way. But of course, GRK doesn't work that way 😬 I thought the movie theater scene was well done, if horrifying, although I did feel it .

Along the same lines, I thought the "after" was dragged out too. Perhaps I was just too tired (it was 2 am, after all) but it felt like the author just made it as flowery and wordy as possible. I still loved it but something felt a tad off to me 😬 Also, it just kills me that .

Also, yet another cliffhanger!!! The thing with Joshi was creepy as shit, GRK knows far too much about our MCs now, and the thing with Sade. Everything is ramping up and I see a lot of pain coming in the rest of the season 😬 I see everyone freaking out over the next episode but I avoided the preview, so I guess I'm in for a big surprise. Onto the next!

❝Come to bed,❞ Seong-Jae whispered. ❝Let me hold you. If you can feel nothing else…then at least feel me.❞
Malcolm smiled slightly, but there was all the ache in the world in that curve of his lips. ❝Trust me, omr,❞ he murmured against Seong-Jae’s mouth. ❝If I can feel nothing else…I can always feel you.❞

Alaskdjfsaljdfjldfas - 😭 *please hold*

I - *takes deep breath* This episode was everything.

• The case was really good.
• Seong-Jae and Mal were actually COMMUNICATING their thoughts and feels.
• I didn't want to punch Joshi.
• The side characters are actually starting to intrigue me again.
• Someone needs to buy Joshi a dog, or something…
• Min Zhe, you good bro bro?
• SADE!!
• Lmao, MalSeong-Jae have the worst luck in the world, I swear.
• That last scene, though… yes 🥵
• MAL IS GONNA MEET SEONG-JAE'S PARENTS!!

❝Hey. Look at me,❞ he murmured. ❝I love you.❞ ...
❝Thank you for that,❞ Seong-Jae said, low and with a subtle husky hitch. ❝Malcolm, I…I hope you are aware that you…you mean everything to me.❞

i'm dead 💀
only Seong-Jae could get away with saying "thank you" instead of "i love you."

Another gripping installment!!! I was on the edge of my seat for most of this.

Highlights:

- Malcolm and Seong-Jae 🥰 Need I say more?

- Tense negotiations with an armed suspect that left me sad for more than one victim.

- My horizons being well and truly broadened. High five to Cole for that incredibly intense 10% (just everything - leading up to, during AND after). I’m in awe. I didn’t think I could love Malcolm any more. But boy did he deliver. I’ve been left eating my own words.

- I’ve had my doubts about Aanga but I felt his pain during one particular scene.

- Unexpected visitors (my heart was in my mouth).

- The fact that my boys are now on a certain someone’s radar has me terrified for what’s to come.

- I never thought that a spider in a bathroom would actually turn out to be a positive. Thank god 🙏🏻

Lowlight:

- Detective Garza. Some of her dialogue was irritating, given the situation. It didn’t affect my overall enjoyment but it bothered me enough to voice it.

I finished this at 2 in the morning with my nerves shot to pieces. So god knows what possessed me to read that preview. I’d been warned so I only have myself to blame for the subsequent lack of sleep that followed 😫

I'll be back as soon as I think I can make some semblance of sense out of my thoughts and feelz!!! Holy hell what a roller coaster ride this series is!!!

About that cliff I've been hanging around...

Well here I am back with Cole McCade's latest episode of 'Criminal Intentions, Season Two' and while I thankfully feel that I can take a tiny step back from the edge of the cliff and maybe even breath a bit...not much but I'll take what I can get.

Now before I get into my review for Episode 5, Deep Spiral...let me just say yes, I did read the preview at the end of this episode and I also read Cole's Q&A which comes right after the preview and I have my theory on what it all means and I'm going to have faith in Cole and stick with what I'm thinking until I'm forced to do otherwise...that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ok, now that we're done with the elephant in the room let's move on to this episode...holyfreakin'motherof$#$*&*%(*$(#!!!!...seriously if ever an author has f*$#ed with my emotions it's Cole McCade, without fail each episode in this series is a roller coaster ride of epic proportions and...well, quite honestly "I LOVE IT!"...what can I say I'm a glutton for punishment, so bring it on.

As it says in the blurb Seong-Jae and Mal are faced with one of the GRK's proxie's in a hostage situation and for most of this episode things were tense...very, very tense and when all is said and done we're left with the distinct impression that Seong-Jae and Mal are very much on the GRK's radar. As for Aanga Joshi...well, he definitely engendered some compassion from me. I think we can all agree that realizing that the person you love not only loves someone else but even if they didn't you would still not be right for them is a very emotional thing for anyone to have to acknowledge but I don't think Joshi's going to have the time to worry about that...things are happening.

Meanwhile back in Baltimore...things weren't any better. There really wasn't a lot of forward movement in the plot where Anjulie is concerned as a matter of fact her issues seem to be compounding and what will happen with Huang is still not clear but damned if Sade didn't prove what many of us have already suspected... they are not to be messed with.

'Criminal Intentions' is without a doubt the type of series that takes a person on one hell of an emotionally draining roller coaster ride only to leave you sitting in that roller coaster car screaming... OMFG! This was something else! Every book gets more intense and thrilling, and this was nail biting suspense! After all Mal and Seong-Jae have been through already, they are put through the ringer again. And even in the midst of dangerous situation the author managed to show each character in myriad of ways: fierce and loyal, gentle and protective, honorable and steadfast. I loved how the whole theater situation unfolded. As always the story didn't pull the punches on human deviousness and despair, passion between Mal and Seong-Jae (whew, that was f*cking smoking hot) and the convoluted web of secrets that bind everyone together in one big scary mess. Awesome!

The many plot lines keep creating a picture of something big: crime underworld, police, FBI and many individuals are moved like pawns on the chessboard. It all leads somewhere, but the author is ever so careful to give away just a bit at a time. The killer is at large still and is as cruel as ever. I am very worried about what's going to happen to everyone in the next episode. I can't wait for the next one!

⭐⭐⭐⭐. 5

Somehow, though, together they were whole, a oneness apparent to anyone who cared to look; if the world operated on different frequencies, they were on their own, a single wavelength that they and only they shared.

These books just keep getting better and better as we move.

This series is a rollercoaster and every installment just keeps me wanting more! It's even more tense than the previous books and I loved every second of it!

The development of Malcolm and Seong-Jae's development just keep getting better. The emotions and trust between them, whew!! I will never get enough of them.

Seong-Jae and Khalaji sat in the back of an ambulance, leaning on each other as if they were the only supports holding each other up—as if, should they let go, they might well both collapse. Somehow, though, together they were whole, a oneness apparent to anyone who cared to look; if the world operated on different frequencies, they were on their own, a single wavelength that they and only they shared.

I felt so bad for Joshi. His POV just saddened me. And that ending? Damn! The author really likes mini cliffhangers for different POVs. Highly recommend this series!!

First thing I want to say is that the rabbit on the cover is freaking HORRIFYING, I will have nightmares tonight for sure 😭

Now let's go to the actual review:

"His name was Michael Elkinson." The old wolf heaved a deep, slow sigh, an aching hitch in his voice. "I just... wanted to remember who he was."

What would you do if you had found yourself in a movie theather, in one minute trying to relax after a hard day and have fun, and in the next literally fighting for your life?

This is what had happened to our favorite detective couple. ON THEIR DATE.

If this was a tv show and I would watch it, I would definitely found myself in the edge of my seat, out of my mind with fear for my favorite characters, for every nameless person in that theater...

... and for the culprit as well.

If you read the book, you know what I mean.

The situation could've ended differently. Should've ended differently. It was so close, SO CLOSE (whoever shoot in that moment - KARMA WILL GET YOU!) 😔 Now we are left with only two potential suspects. Which one is The Golden Ratio Killer? Or maybe none of them is? What is his actual goal and how is Sila involved in all of this? I have more and more questions and can't wait for the answers!

Anyways, I did like Khalaji and Yoon's scenes. And this time I forgive the BDSM scene (even if it didn't make any sense considering that 1) they were both tired af and 2) it started in too sweet way and I hoped that it will stay that way but of course IT DIDN'T). I love the way both Malcolm and Seong-Jae are getting deeper and deeper into their relationship and realizing how much they mean to each other. It happens again and again, and I can't help, but just feel happy for them. They deserve the best from the world and I hope that they will survive whatever the future holds for them.

Oh, right, their parents made an appearance. Through the phone calls, but I will take it as it was. It was so wholesome and heartwarming - as always I'm very happy that both Malcolm and Seong-Jae have such loving families ☺️ And I'm very happy and so, so excited for the upcoming Yoon dinner (if you know, you know) 🤩

Adelaide and Gage also appeared for one scene, but it was so cute that I will forgive that it was only one scene (but I need more, I need to see them on a date!!) ☺️

Right, one more thing before I will end this review - HUANG NEEDS TO LIVE, OKAY?? HE JUST NEEDS TO SURVIVE AND THE FREAKING WELLINGTON GIRL NEEDS TO BE GONE ONCE AND FOR ALL!!

P.S. IS AANGA NEXT ON THE LIST BECAUSE THAT SCENE TERRIFIED THE HELL OUT OF ME 😢 PLEASE DON'T KILL HIM, I WANT HIM TO FIND A NICE MAN AND HAVE A GREAT LIFE 😭

Hm. I don't think I'm feeling burnout, per se, but do I wonder if I'm losing interest in some of the build-up of this particular season/arc. And I'm not sure why it took this episode, which veers in a pretty different, and very action-y tense trajectory, to notice.. but it did. It could also just be that my brain starts to side-eye all these uber capable, almost omniscient, villains.

I had only just said the repetition and cyclical sense of the relationship interactions might be a me thing but.. I felt it again with this one. I kind of want to let them off the hook because of the close calls they experienced but I almost think McCade may have written themselves into a corner with how these two have to interact, their big feelings, their big declarations, etc. I definitely find myself skimming.

But maybe I'm just tired.

Whenever we do jump away, though, we inevitably end up in the Sade/Huang plot and I'm back to just not caring. I think that plot is setting up to tie in with both Anji and Gabi, and I think there was an offhand comment about something that has almost been spelled out to be the next big conflict, so I sense that should be converging soon. Or maybe next season? I don't know.

We're halfway through this season now, I think, and I'm definitely feeling the urge to just push through, which I don't love, but hoping before the end I get back to feeling some love.

4.5 stars!

This was a tense one...I mean, even more tense than the past four have been. The last book ended with one of the suspects for TGRK locking Mal, Seong-Jae and all the other movie goers in a movie theater to shoot up the place.

We open with that, and it goes on for half the book. It is super suspenseful and nail biting and on the edge-of-your-seat inducing, to be sure, but at times for me it got to be almost too much. Like there was too much tenseness and nail-biting and stress for me, for too long. Like just when we think it's going to either go really bad or really good, something was said or something happened to stall it and Mal, Seong-Jae and our suspect were at a stand still for SO LONG that it got frustrating for me.

Even more frustrating when it would go to another POV outside of what was happening in the movie theater, and even near the end it gave us Marvin's (the suspect's) POV for pages and it just got frustrating for me, so much that I had to give .5 off for it. It was, of course, as well written as always and the emotions were high and Mal and Seong-Jae of it all of course had me highly invested and I loved it even as I hated it because these two were in huge danger and come close to being killed like 3 or 4 times. It was STRESSFUL.

But still, I don't think it needed to be dragged out quite as long as it did. Maybe in an actual TV episode it would work - episodes like One Tree Hill come to mind, or Grey's Anatomy - but in a book with about half of the whole book focusing on that - and then cutting away at the worst times to other POV's (probably to make us want to scream at our screen/book which...came close for me) it just grated a little too much for me.

The rest of it, though? Amazing. I didn't feel too put off by other POV's we've been introduced to this season, although there were a few times the POV's just did not interest me and I had to force myself to read through the first few paragraphs or pages before I could get into it, and that whole thing at the end! :O I can't say more than that.

Also I didn't even read the preview except for near the end which made me glad I didn't read the preview, because! THAT BETTER BE A DREAM OR SOMETHING, MR. COLE!

That Mal and Seong-Jae scene afterward was...whew, amazing! Wow. These two always always always are so amazing together ands scorch the pages with their passion, chemistry and absolute adoration and love for each other. I just absolutely adore them and can't get enough of them.

So overall this was an amazing installment, loved it, it was high stakes craziness and things are REALLY ramping up now (with TGRK and what happens when we get a snapshot of what he's up to...and now that Sila is free and out there again too....GAH) and I think this at least showed one thing, which is that Mal and Seong-Jae work amazingly together, and they will need that in order to survive this shit coming up, which will probably scary and crazy and nail-biting as well. I just had to take .5 off for the slight dragging out of the shooting and everything.

Can't wait for the next one, though...and am also dreading it at the same time because....THAT BETTER BE A DREAM, DAMN YOU!

As someone who usually loves the hostage episodes on crime shows like Criminal Minds, this book was made for me! Cole had me locked IN from beginning to end. The tension was so palpable and you could feel the weight of every decision SJ & Mal had to make through the situation. I really appreciated the pacing throughout as well. Cole can get a little..verbose sometimes, but he kept the writing pretty tight here. Even when we went away from the primary plotline, I enjoyed those scenes and didn't feel a rush to get back into the main storyline. To be clear, I'm locked in with this series till the bitter end. But it was great to get such a strong reminder of why I fell in love with these books.

Also, as a girlie who filtered Ao3 fanfic by the "Established Relationship" tag, the way SJ & Mal were written here just made my heart sing. Cole does a perfect mix of letting us revel in the solidity of their relationship while also maintaining intrigue in the new aspects they're going to discover. Love the combo of seeing their personal and professional chemistry and their interplay in tense moments. Also, the kink was alive and well in this book too and I was here for it! Scenes like that hit so much harder when the author has taken time to build the characters up (rather than the "cinnamon roll in the streets, abrupt dirty filthy talking obsessive dom in the sheets" move that some authors like to pull).

I'm so glad this second season got a 5 star from me! Every time I come back to this series, I fall right back into these characters like I never left. And we're 18 books in!!
----------------------------------------------------------
I need to gather coherent thoughts but I can say that this is definitely the best book in "Season 2" of this series so far. The pacing, the plotting, the TENSION??? Obsessed.

This episode was so stressful but can we just take a moment to admire this quote from Joshi’s perspective 😭❤️❤️❤️❤️ I love seeing their love from Mal’s and SJ POV but it’s so nice seeing an outsider view of them. Hopefully this will be the wake up call for Joshi to back the f up and away from Seong-Jae!!!!
