Homans' text notes social behavior is a fundamental process appearing consciously or unconsciously among humans, learned through small groups, but operating throughout organizations and societies of a larger scale. It can be observed through sentiment, activity, interaction and norms, resulting in the characteristics of groups and societies. Societal institutions last because they have payoffs for the individual, whether through status or wealth.
