A powerful London newspaper editor, Ian Buchanan has made an art out of demolishing adversaries in scathing columns read over tea and toast. But when he's unjustly fired, he can't defend himself without revealing a childhood secret that would destroy his reputation and make him a tabloid favorite.
Seeking solitude to plan his defense strategy, Ian travels to Hopeville, Texas. This strategy definitely doesn’t include his cabin’s bubbly, barefoot hostess, Sophie Grey, whose Jessica Rabbit dress, welcoming smile, and penchant for literally falling into his arms make for an all-too-tempting distraction.
The proud new owner of a string of vacation cabins, Sophie Grey can’t believe she’s embarrassed herself by stumbling into the arms of her newest guest: a brooding British man of mystery whose sexiness is leaving her wobbly in the leg department. Suddenly, she’s planning all the ways they can be together, vertically, horizonal . . . and maybe diagonally, if that's even a thing.
But now that Sophie's walking on the wild side with Ian, her inner accountant is spotting a bunch of contradictions that don’t add up. Ian’s cut-glass English accent doesn’t quite go with his bareknuckle boxer’s physique and his frequent urgent trips back to the UK are giving her pause for thought.
As secrets are piling up, Sophie starts to wonder if the handsome Brit is perhaps a man of too much mystery. And with both Sophie and his future in the balance, will Ian finally reveal all?
Evie Snow is the pen name for a globe-trotting writing team comprising of Georgina (George) Penney and Tony (The Kraken) Johnson.
George does the actual writing and reads far too many books. In the past, she was well on the way to a contemporary history PhD when moving to Saudi Arabia re-introduced her to a love of writing fiction.
Tony manages plot wrangling and is in charge of caffeine distribution. He once spent twenty years working globally as a petroleum engineer and found the oil industry to be far stranger than fiction.
Together, George and Tony have lived in a bunch of countries including Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Brunei Darussalam and Scotland. They’re currently on a world-traveling adventure, writing books, seeing all the sights, eating all the food and patting as many critters as possible
I love the fantastic journey I’m taken on when I read an Evie Snow story and Talkin’ The Talk is no exception.
When Texan Sophie Grey meets Brit Ian Buchanan things don’t go as she had anticipated; yes he is ruggedly handsome, and seriously hot, as well as tall (score!) but he is also grumpy, ungracious, and incredibly rude.
What Sophie doesn’t know is that Ian is staying at the cabin she owns to escape any media scrutiny following career ending accusations of hacking. Once a high profile editor and chief of the newspaper The London Voice he is now having to bide his time and wait for evidence to clear his name.
As Ian fights to save his reputation and career can he also redeem himself in Sophie’s eyes and show her that underneath he is worthy of her affection?
What follows is fast paced, passionate, and sexy romance. Interesting back stories provide insight into the personalities of Evie’s characters and add depth and vulnerability. The witty dialogue, entertaining twists and turns had me captivated from the beginning to its sigh-worthy end.
I was sent this book by the author in exchange for an honest review, so here we go...
I really enjoyed this book because it never seemed to slow down. There always seemed to be something happening. Sophie is a talkative Texan girl and Ian is posh British guy and when these two meet things start to heat up. At first I wasn't the hugest fan of Ian until I started to get to know him. I love books like this when you get to know the characters throughout the book instead of all at once in the beginning. Sophie and Ian both have secrets that start coming out as the relationship progresses and they have to figure out if it's worth fighting for.
I totally enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more of the Texas Hill Country series from Evie Snow. Ian and Sophie both touched my heart from the beginning. I
Both characters have ghosts from their past that have defined their present and their lack of trust. It was them coming together in the middle of blackmail, assault, hacking and scandal.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves romance with a touch angst!

Once again, Evie Snow has kicked one hell of a goal with this smart, sexy and heartfelt novel that is everything sublime romance should be! I'm constantly in awe of Snow's storycraft - how she takes straightforward romantic fiction to another level with much deeper narratives and characters of complexity. There is a realism to these stories that set them apart and it makes them so emotionally satisfying. The danger for Evie Snow is that readers - certainly this reader! - will want to see more from the characters and situations set out in this novel. I, for one, can't get enough!
This wasn't a bad read. Ian was trying to cope with some issues which is why he was in Texas. He meets Sophie. She is very different than the women he is used too. They of course start a relationship and have a HEA. My one complaint is it could have left out all the extra drama with Beau. Candy certainly deserved better and I was happy that Sophie was there to help her in the end.
I was given an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. Not only was it a great story line in which could I get a real feel for the different characters and see them grow as the story developed it was funny, witty and well written. There were some steamy scenes as well as ones where I was cringing on Sophie's behalf. I also loved that I did not find myself sending one correction in to Amazon. I had also never heard of the Travelling Irish which I have now been reading about. I love a book that makes me go on and learn something new.
I do love reading Evie Snow. She has a way of writing that never fails to make me smile. I enjoyed Sophie and Ian in this (although Ian took a lot of warming up to.) Sophie is just gorgeous. A girl with a heart of gold whose major fault is she can't keep her mouth shut when she's nervous... so all sorts of things slip out, such as how good Ian smells within seconds of meeting him. It's also pretty freaking hot in parts. These two do steam up the pages whenever they're together.
This is the first book I have read by Evie Snow. I liked the two strong but completely different personalities and the way they interacted throughout the book. There were other interesting characters that added so much to the story line. I loved the twists and turns in the plot. I wasn't sure how it would all work out in the end so I had to keep turning the pages. It was an enjoyable read.
I found myself a new favourite author and really fell in love with this book! The story flows from page one. I even shed a tear but in the end it left me with a smile. All characters are well described and they grow on you as you learn more about them. Especially Ian and Sophie.
I received an arc of this book and this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
As a Hidden Gem ARC reader I received this book for free. And promised an honest review. Here it is.
English isn’t my first language. Sorry for errors.
Rating: 5 stars (of 5).
In general: Complicated, sweet love story in an interesting setting.
Main characters: - Sophie Grey. Living at the Lonely Creek Ranch House in Texas with her brother Hank and her father. Her parents were divorced. She was raised by her mother but now lives with her dad and works for him as the manager of the holiday cottages near the ranch. - Ian Buchanan. Editor-in-chief of an important English newspaper. Fired by the owner of the paper, William Fairclough, to keep it a secret that a journalist, William’s son, made a serious mistake. The owner and his son want to publish that Ian is responsible for the mistake. And they are searching to find more dirt in Ian’s past, so they can give him a bad reputation. To reconsider his situation in peace and avoid his downfall, Ian hires a cottage of Sophie’s family for a few weeks. - Candy Blume. Childhoodfriend of Sophie. Married to Beau, who lost his job on an offshore oilrig. He’s looking for work and Candy gets him a job on the family ranch.
Sophie and Ian meet when she has to show him his holiday cottage. Their first meeting is a disaster. Sophie is too late and Ian’s reaction is rude. A nervous Sophie talks a lot and a stressed, jet lagged Ian asks her to stop chattering for she invades his privacy and gives him a headache. But Sophie has to visit the cottage again. She looks after the house and has to refill his refrigerator regularly. Despite the bad start they gradually like each other. Sophie admires his looks, confidence and interesting British accent. Ian thinks she looks gorgeous and secretly enjoys her spontaneity, intelligence and lovely character.
The author, Evie Snow, creates a sweet love story with a lot af complications. The relationship between Sophie and Ian has many problems. Among other things caused by their difficult youth, some blackmail attempts and a worsening situation between Candy and Beau, in which Sophie and Ian get involved. But it also results in interesting dialogues, exciting action scenes (among others in Scotland) and credible additional characters. Well done.
I received an ARC and voluntarily leave my honest review! This is the first book I've picked up by this author and I really liked the writing style, very descriptive with nice world building and fantastic character development. For me Sophie stole the show, other then trying to solve all her problems herself, she was a really strong and likable character. Ian had it pretty rough growing up so you can understand where a lot of his issues stem from, didn't like a few of his decisions but they came from a good place and he got his act together in the end. Lots happening in this one, with a few surprises along the way which I really enjoyed and is always nice when it isn't so predictable, thanks for that! I think I read it was a romantic comedy and while the banter had its humorous moments it wasn't a laugh out loud book for me. They characters had great chemistry together with an ok number of intimate scenes, not too many which was great! Interesting secondary characters and it will be good to see who gets a book next in the series! Overall a great start to a series and I look forward to the next one.
There was so much to enjoy in this book. It’s written in a very fun, engaging style, and has some very nice bits of description, funny dialogue, and so on.
I loved Sophie. She was a great heroine. I empathised with her so much, particularly on the talkative front. I think this is possibly the first time I’ve read a book where the heroine is meant to be annoyingly talkative and she actually is, and it actually annoys people on-page. Like Sophie, I’ve been told a lot of times that I talk too much and it’s something that gets me down as well, so I really liked that facet of her character. I also liked, for the most part, how she handled the situations she found herself in.
Ian was a good hero, too. I loved his background - the Irish Traveller angle was definitely unusual for this kind of novel and I found it a really interesting one. I liked the contrast between his past and how he presents himself today, as well, and how that translated into being in the USA, where there’s very little knowledge of Irish Traveller culture. I also liked how quickly he owned up to his mistakes regarding Sophie and genuinely apologised.
I loved their relationship, too. I liked that they did not get off on the best foot but were attracted to one another, and that their relationship itself is fairly conflict-free. They like each other, they talk about it, and they’re honest about their feelings. Apart from the big argument, it’s mostly just a sweet relationship that develops nicely over the story.
I liked the background characters and the world that has been created for them. I had my reservations about the main plot and main villain (with regards to Sophie’s storyline), but I liked the little details early on that seeded how it was going to play out
I liked Ian’s subplot, but I didn’t really get why it played out like it did. I understood that he needed to confront his past - that was fine - but I thought he had so many other options available to him than to handle it how it was handled. I get that his past was private, controversial, and that Irish Travellers are hugely discriminated against, but I still thought the way he dealt with it was a bit...odd. I really thought at one point he was going to reveal his own story on his own terms to take the story away from his rivals, and I think that would have worked well. On the note of Ian’s story - I didn’t like the hopping back and forth between the UK and the US. I know it’s doable - but it just felt a bit repetitive.
Sophie’s storyline had its holes for me as well. I didn’t mind being the main villain, because it was hinted at early on that he wasn’t all that he seemed, but there were certain details that just didn’t work for me.
I was also dying for her to tell Ian what was going on earlier. Even if she wanted to handle it herself, it was a lot to go through alone without the support of somebody else. In general, I found that plotline just went on way too long and kept on coming back in ways that were just frustrating.
Also - the storyline about her dad, that was really weird and ultimately went nowhere. It was really built up that it would be a big reveal, why her parents split custody how they did; I really thought it was going to turn out she wasn’t biologically his daughter, but that he loved her anyway, but the reveal that it was just...she talked too much when she was a kid to stop her parents from arguing and he wanted to protect her from that...seemed very weak? It didn’t work, at all.
On a final note about the plot and how the plot is described in the book's description - there isn't really much of a mystery about Ian's big secret. I don't think Sophie spends a lot of time trying to piece together the things that confuse her about him - in fact, I didn't get the impression she as a character had many concerns about him at all. The reader knows very early on what his secret is, too. Sophie is far too wrapped up in her own (quite big!) problems to worry about Ian, so I found the selling of this book as a "mystery" a bit weird in retrospect.
But overall, I really enjoyed the book and I would probably read it again. It had some great writing and some good plotting, but I think certain plot points felt a bit out of place and could have been worked in better. That said, it’s quite a nice, easy to read book. There are some dark moments and some angst, but I think it’s quite nicely handled overall.
I would recommend it if you want an unusual small-town (sort of!) romance.
Content Warnings:Attempted rape (on-page, quite violent), physical violence (inc. against the heroine), blackmail, revenge porn, child abuse (off-page, in the past), domestic violence (off-page, in the past, but hints of it on-page), drug addiction, illegal gambling, mentions of dog-fighting, phone-hacking.
I received a copy of this book from Hidden Gems for an honest review. This book almost lost me. It started out pretty annoying and I couldn’t stand the main character Sophie. After about 30% it did get much better. Thankfully, cause I really did not want to DNF my final book of the year and just barely miss reaching 80 books for the year.
The first part of the book kind of rubbed me the wrong way because it felt almost like an abusive type of relationship. Ian was demanding and bossy and kind of rude towards Sophie and she was just a doormat but once he got over his past all of a sudden he was the Knight in shinning armor. The book did have it’s cute moments and high drama and some pretty spicy sex scenes so it was a decent way to end my reading year.
⭐⭐⭐.5 (3.5 out of 5) Even though this book ended up being pretty good, I probably won’t continue on with the series.
I love these little quirky romance books! I am not into reading romance fiction but these are full of clever conversation, family dynamics, some non-USA characters (always interesting), family dynamics........the women aren't pushovers but sometimes do really dumb things and the men are not made out to be fools (very common on TV these days) but also do and say some really dumb things (thus the plots that ensue). I've read a series (Evangeline's Rest) by the same "author" which mainly take place in Australia which I found to be informative about that area of the world. They are light quick reading and very enjoyable. I believe it is a male/female team writing them which may be the trick to making them somewhat realistic but with all the sexual tension and goodies that come with books about relationships.
🌾A hunky visitor from across the pond and a good ole 🌵Texas gal set the plains on fire😜😍🔥 December 18, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition 👍4.5 🌟stars Lots of intrigue to go along with a 🔥steamy ❤romance between loquacious Texan Sophie and Ian, the new British guest at her rental cottages in rural Texas. The writing was good, the hero had a hard luck, secretive history and the heroine Sophie had a screwed up vulnerability due to her parents' divorce and ended up with her own secrets to keep. I really liked all of the plot threads and how they resolved by the story's end. The secondary characters like Sophie's BFF Candy and her husband Beau added a lot to the drama.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
An excellent and entertaining read. A suiting tonic and solace to hideaway in while all of life is otherwise moving at a crazy pace, with heaps to think about and organise. The book effortlessly transports you into telling you its tale and wrapping you up in the intertwining lives of Ian and Sophie. Evie Snow again shows excellent insight the (as ever) into both complicated and simple human psychology and even geographic and cultural settings, here of Texan, London, Scottish and traveller settings. There is a thoughtful eye and sensitivity for detail (explaining what Gatwick is for example for non-UK readers) which displays the effortless skill of global writers. A happy read and on to the Book 2 now!
When Texas girl Sophie meets hot Brit Ian, sparks fly. But are they the good kind? Eh not exactly, at least not at first because he may be a hot Brit, but he's rude and grumpy at first. Soon, though, as the two get to know each other, feelings are being caught all over. It won't be easy going, though, because both Sophie and Ian have demons and things from their pasts that have enormous impact on their present lives.
Talkin' the Talk is a funny, sexy romance. If this sounds like your jam, I recommend you 1-click today!
DELIGHTFUL! This was a wonderful surprise, as I hadn’t read anything by this author team before. Sophie and Ian couldn’t be more different, but they find that their differences actually enhance their budding relationship. He is trying to escape this past, and she talks too much when nervous. One would never picture them together, but Ms. Snow makes their relationship “inevitable". Great characters in this wonderfully written story make it a must read. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Sophia can’t stop talking since she was a little girl. And it gets worse when she feels uncomfortable. So when she mets Ian, the rough Englishman renting one of the cabins at her father’s ranch, she makes an impression of herself. They feel an instant attraction but can Ian open up and show the real Ian to Sophie? It’s a love story but full of intense emotion, some funny situations and a lot of happiness.
This was fun although I can say I was not completely sold on Ian. I love Sophie and Candy's friendship so much! The men in this didn't really impress me. I didn't like how in our introduction to Hank he made mention to paddling her behind, plus I felt he wasn't super observant of his sister. Zeke also. I still enjoyed some parts. I liked the sismance, enjoyed the fight (short as it was), and reallly enjoyed someone else getting their just desserts at end.

Oh Lordy...what an emotional journey! This is somewhat of a lengthy read—53 chapters—but it goes fast because you can’t put it down. Evie Snow gives us a masterful storyline; great characters; emotional twists and turns; and a terrific HEA. This is a fantastic read...put it on your TBR today! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and really liked it.)
Not going to lie I picked it because of the cactus 🍆.
I really loved the forced proximity guy is a dick but not really trope.
I felt akin to the MC female - how she doesn’t have a good relationship with her biological dad. It’s a hard thing to process - not being wanted or was it just life circumstances that were not meant to hurt you for entire life.
About 200 pages in everything was great - except for a major plot twist that ruined my opinion and made me not want to continue until the end. I honestly feel like this story could have been great without that one plot twist.
The idea of someone talking as much as Sophie gave me chills at first, but once I met the character, I was sold. Ian took me a bit to like. I don't like bullies, but his story was one that I'm glad I read. I really enjoyed the book. Now I'm off to the next one in the series.
Surprisingly heavy content for a romance. I liked that Sophie and Ian started with an open admission that they were hot for each other and had sex without judgment. I hated that Sophie was put in an untenable position by an absolute d-bag and I understood why she was determined to dig her way out without involving others.
Whew, a lot of complicated story threads. One man trying to outrun his early life, a daughter trying to reconcile with the father she didn't understand and the two of them thrown together to sort it all out.
