This was a pretty imaginative and creative book that listed all the letters of the alphabet that a supposed old lady swallowed, as well as several words that started with the letter each page was dedicated to. I was intrigued to read this book because I remember a story that was read to me when I was little about an old lady swallowing a fly. It turns out both books (as well as many others about this old lady) are by the same author, Lucille Colandro and illustrator Jared Lee. I think this book would be best suited for around Kindergarten age students to aid in their learning of the alphabet, but it could be enjoyed by any age. I rated this 4/5 stars for two reasons: 1. I think some of the chosen words and pictures to go with certain letters (O and S for example) follow a theme that may confuse children about other words that go with the letter. “S is for Scarecrow, Spider, and more Spooky Stuff.” “O is for Oyster, Octopus, and Other things in the Ocean.” While these themes are cute, a child may be led to believe dolphins or sharks start with O because they live in the ocean or that pumpkins and halloween start with S because they are spooky things. and 2. This book failed to give examples of words starting with X and Z. I understand that there aren’t a ton of words, especially drawable nouns, that begin with these letters, but X-rays or Zebras could have been examples. Overall, this was a good little book to help teach the alphabet for beginner students.
My son was most excited for this book from his Scholastic Book Fair order. It’s essentially an alphabet book over being a rhyming book about the Old Lady in the Shoe. It was OK, I mean I’m glad it cost like $3 but overall wouldn’t recommend. Illustrations were fine, my 4 year old enjoyed it but alphabet books aren’t the best. Overall, 2/5 stars ⭐️
This is another good book written by Lucille Colandro. It is a great book to help children start to learn their alphabet through using silly stories and fun rhymes. My niece thought it was hilarious when I read to her about two weeks ago and kept wanting me to read it over and over again.
