Deep in the forest, Theo has finally found the mysterious Doctor, whose medicine might save Mia’s life. In exchange, Theo must find what the Doctor desires most and bring it back to him. Theo agrees without thinking, but how will he even figure out this riddle, not to mention find what the Doctor’s looking for in this vast, forbidding wood full of fairies and monsters? The clock is ticking as Mia lies in her sickbed, and the unknown enemies who attacked her plot their next move…
A solid second installment to what is turning out to be a wonderfully charming and magical read!
There isn't too much to say about this volume without going into spoilers but if you enjoyed the first one, I do believe you will enjoy the second. The artwork is beautiful and Theo and Mia are adorable (and so is Doug - a new character) but I feel like this volume was setting us up for a big adventure which will probably take place in the third volume.
It was t as captivating as book one was, but I still loved the art and settings. Most of the time I was waiting for something to happen. Sure, Mia recovered from her fever, and received some solid advice about finding a magician that could help control her magic, but that was it for the intense stuff. The rest of the book was a journey to two towns where the narrator spent most of the time explains how excited Theo and Mia were going on an adventure. Despite the lack of action, I am still curious of how the manga series will unfold.
With beautiful illustrations and characters who’ll find their way into your heart, this kind and cosy story is truly magical in every sense of the word.
He not only persuades the old man in the forest to give him a treatment for Mia but learns why it happened. Alas, they will have to find a magician who can teach her control for her to escape the peril. It involves being scolded for where they camp, Mia's fear that Theo will be injured, a pass, a fortune teller who finds lost things, and more.
Theo’s life of adventure has come at last. Determined to protect Mia, Theo works hard to become stronger and help keep her safe even though it means leaving his family behind. The pair definitely have their “heads in the clouds” as one of their acquaintances says. The story captures their nativity well by contesting their simple character with a bit more detail placed on the side characters and the surroundings.
As beautifully illustrated as the last, Nicke captures the mystery and excitement of adventure in Beyond the Clouds (vol. 2). I look forward to seeing more of this enchanting world through Theo and Mia’s eyes.
A great 2nd volume. Everyone gets better and Theo and Mia start their adventure, encountering new characters. I think I'm going to miss Hotch while they go adventuring.
This volume was more enjoyable than the first for me. It answered some questions and the characters seemed to have some sort of purpose/goal now. The art is beautiful so hopefully the story will continue to improve.
Theo completes his quest for the sage doctor in the forest and retrieves medicine for Mia, but the doctor reveals that Mia has magic that she needs to learn to control if she is going to survive. He tells Theo she needs to find a magician who can train her to control her powers. Theo has a theory that one might be living in the City of Merchants, Karatope, and he offers to travel with Mia. They gather provisions, supplies, and set out to see if Theo is correct. Along the way, they are swept up by a kindly family who harvest the nectar of flowers, and they reveal that one can only enter Karatope with an approved merchant pass. Theo and Mia exchange a day's work for this pass, and finally find themselves within the walls of the city. A few well-worded questions lead them to a fortune teller, who may know more about magic, but refuses to even hear them out.
Theo and Mia are so sweet together, and I'm glad it was addressed that they might be assaulted by bad guys the way they were setting up their tent right by the road and not keeping a watch. Where did these kids learn to travel?? The world Nicke has created is really interesting and beautiful. I appreciate the "logic" of it. Karatope is a city built on commerce, and Theo realizes his questions about a magician aren't going to lead to anyone because he's not thinking like a merchant. He changes tactics and gets results. Details like that make a world more real than if Theo was just led to the right person from the get-go.
I wish the entire volume was color watercolors, as the black and white illustrations are beautiful but could be amazing as watercolors. There is a little bit of a rough quality to them, but it makes the illustrations unique from other manga titles.
What a wonderful second volume! The artwork continues to astound. There is a single spread at the beginning that is in color – just enough to make me wish the entire book was in the lush colors. I’m 100% enchanted with Theo and Mia and I’m hooked on their story. While one thread was resolved in this volume, it moved smoothly to the next. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those series that just doesn’t get published/translated fast enough for me.
This cotinues to be cute and sweet with a good touch of adventure. I love the brother sister relationship Theo and Mia have as well, and the forest dr is very sweet as well. Love this!
Very cute and classically whimsical in a Ghibliesque way. More fantasy than steampunk this time, but the characters are all still very cute and positive. What more can you want?
