Where to turn when all roads lead to ruin? Last night I barely escaped 1776 New York City - now I have to go back.
My teammates are trapped in a time catch. Worse, the demon master Malphas is building a gateway there, one that could trigger a full-blown apocalypse.
But returning will require new A crabby goblin, a fae princess and former lover, and the demon-vampire Arnaud. Yeah, that guy. And we’re no longer facing one time catch, but several. All ruptured and on the verge of collapse.
Now a simple rescue has turned into a death-defying journey, one that’s pushing my spell casting and stamina to their limits.
But as hellfire lashes up and day dims to eternal night, I’m facing an even greater test...
Choosing between my faith in magic and my love for Vega.
Night Rune is the 8th novel in the urban fantasy series. If you like occult action, spell-crackling suspense, and moments of heart, heroism, and all-out laughter, you’ll love Prof Croft!
Brad Magnarella writes urban fantasy for the same reason most read it – to explore worlds where magic crackles from fingertips, vampires and shifters walk city streets, cats talk (some excessively), and good prevails against all odds. It’s shamelessly fun.
His three main series, Prof Croft, Blue Wolf, and Maddy Deeds, make up the growing Croftverse, with nearly a half-million books sold to date and an Independent Audiobook Award nomination.
Hopelessly nomadic, Brad can be found in a rented room overseas or hiking America's backcountry.

Absolutely fantastic addition to the Prof Croft series! Fast paced and action packed, this book will keep you up at night! Friends and enemies, old and new, make for some awesome adventures for Professor Everson Croft!!
I like these books At this point I think I have read all of the books in the original series, and a couple of the offshoot books (Blue Wolf, and Croft and Wesson), and have greatly enjoyed most of them. Night Rune, the most recent book, was I think better than the proceeding outing. It was more tightly plotted and focused more on the characters than on their surroundings. Also, the behavior of the people made more sense in context. I think the environments of the 'time catches' made more sense in the latest book, which is all to the good. It will be interesting to see where the story goes after Croft becomes a father (this is not really a spoiler, if you have read the earlier books in the series) as everything becomes more problematic when you introduce small children to the mix. It will also be interesting to see what happens when Vega's son starts interacting with Tabitha the cat. I look forward to the next book.
This book is Brad Magnarella's best to date. I think I've said that before, and I honestly meant it, but this book, tops the previous books in the Prof Croft series. Attention to detail is obvious. There are a lot of characters and they are all given attention to make them clearly defined as individuals, even the minor bit players. There are multiple scene changes of past and present and they were all given enough detail to give the reader an interesting mental picture of where they were without being over described and slowing the pace. Speaking of pace, the action builds from an anxiety filled first chapter. I was never not interested in what I was reading. Whether it was action, which there is a lot of, or it was tension and danger, the pacing is excellent. The end chapters wrap up the second phase in Croft's life and we're given some changes which will begin Croft's next phase in life.
Croft has a mass of things on his shoulders. Vega is pregnant his baby is a target for evil beings...especially Arnaud, the vampire demon. Currently in jail, he tells Croft that he is the only one who can save his friends caught up in the "Time Catch," before it is too late. He also has to free the Order and the Upholders and hopefully destroy Malphas. As always there is a ton of magic, treats to his loved ones, rescues, bloodshed, action galore, too many monsters and paranormal creatures to count and a hope for a better future. New partners help Croft in his quest and a proposal may be in the works...who knows? So...as a reader you can't go wrong with this series and this new release. If you haven't started this series, you won't regret it if you do. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.
Last book and we pick up the story again, the day of the last book.
And then he and his goblin friend pick a fight with his alleged mentor Gretchen, who throws them both out and cuts them off… like seriously, lady; not cool. People are dying here.
The lamp is Dropsy - a fae enchanted item - the demon infected fae killing people, could be Caroline’s Prince husband, but he says it is Caroline. Regardless, she has remembered her affection for Everson, which she ‘paid’ away the memory of before.
But now he has to go back in and rescue his friends from the fast collapsing time pockets; they have all been sucked into different ones.
One of our were boars drives a city bus - is one of those sentences that can only exist in urban fantasy… and it makes me chortle.
Review of books after Black Luck. This is a nice second storyline, albeit not as interesting as the first. Things started getting stale, especially the relationship with Vega's brothers which I skipped, and the relationship with Vega herself which got tiring. I also found Tabitha to be annoying and one-dimensional, even though she at least did something useful for a small part of the series. I was hoping she would develop due to the midlife crisis but that didn't help either. The character of Jordan was so annoying, and remained that way throughout the series, it was intentional but I think it went a little too far. I think the characters have had enough after this segment and should be retired. Perhaps a segway to a different mage like James Wesson.
It's SOOOO VERY DARN AWESOME!!!! Where to begin!!! Well, 5 stars is NOT enough!!! here goes: It begins with a beloved character and from the previous books my expectations are VERY high already. The very NAME of this author inspires confidence that this too will be an EXCELLENT adventure, very worthy of my time!!! Throw in EVEN MORE amazing characters from previous books and adventures and even a few from OTHER series and you've got a cocktail of pure unfiltered intrigue. You will become immersed in the story the author weaves and feel every pounding heartbeat, white knuckle fights with the characters fears and real fights to stay alive or save others. The quest takes the reader through time itself and worlds you could never imagine but you will live it through the authors words. Just when you think you know "who done it" you get twisted around and see that it just could be someone else, some WHERE else, in another TIME. I LOVED the intellectual stimulation!! of which there is a LOT. I'd give you more details but there is just SO much going on, with so many characters, you just HAVE TO read it for yourself. I JUST finished reading it and will be delving right back into it again in a few hours. It's THAT AMAZING! I can't wait for the NEXT Professor Croft book, I LOVE this series.
Croft needs assistance, and no one who he would chose to help can. He needs to venture into the Fae Wilds to find what he needs. Not exactly a safe proposition, but infinitely better than the alternative. Circumstances are not helped by the revenant hunting him.
A seriously exciting and breathtaking chapter in Prof Croft's story. A search for allies and a race through history to stop evil.
As with everything, there will be a cost. Question is, will it be too high? And will Croft be able to pay?
So much WOW. This book answers all the previous questions I ever had about the Croft-verse. So many twists and turns, a bunch of surprises, and a whole lot of an AMAZING story. Croft has to be really honest with himself and Vega and Vega has to trust him and his magic because Arnaud may be the only key to finding the friends he's missing. The story picks up at the end of the last, so make sure you've read the series!! Sooooo good. It's a long book and I *still* wasn't ready for it to end. Soooooo good.
Croft has to return to historic New York to rescue the members of his team that didn't escape. Could they all be together in one location/time? Of course not! Caroline assists him in this endeavor as does Bree-yark. Croft has to agree to a terrible bargain in order to get Arnaud's help since Arnaud is vital to not only accessing the time catch but also the destruction of his despised master, Malphas.
Interesting twists as not everyone is who they seem to be. Croft is constantly being thwarted in his mission.
Croft made it back from the time bubble, but his friends did not. Arnaud is in the warded prison cell and not looking good. Croft needs to get back to the time bubble to rescue them but the fae won't help. Croft ends up heading to the bubble in a way I will not give away, but things have changed. The time is changing depending on where Croft goes. His first aim is to recover his friends and then stop the demon apocalypse. Magnarella has whipped up another great tale with plenty of action and great characters.
This story has really grown into something that I love, although I have to admit I was ready to rage quit the series if a certain goblin was actually dead. This series shows that it's okay to have a happy ending. It was also nice that there wasn't all this inner turmoil of secrets being kept from other characters and all the unnecessary drama and conflict that it creates. Sometimes it's refreshing just to have our heroes battling the bad guys and not each other. Another fun read, now on to the next.
Night Rune is officially my favorite in the Croft series so far. Fast paced, full of questions and introspection, thanks to time traveling-like adventures. It was both a lovely look back at where Croft has come from and a glimpse into where he might go next. I'm also quite used to screaming at authors for their endings in these sort of long running series, all set up and cliff hanger, but this one had a truly satisfying close.
These books get better and better each edition as the author adds to the story. This is my favorite thus far as you can infer. Prof Croft has the weight of 'worlds' on his shoulders. His Girlfriend is pregnant, his friends are missing and his elders are also MIA. Arnaud is willing to help for a price or two.... Bring in some new allies and the party is starting. Will he succeed? How will he free them? Why did it all go wrong? These you have to read to find out.
I love the Professor Croft series. It has been a great source of reading pleasure and entertainment immersing myself in this young wizard's world and his many battles. Hopefully this is not the last we hear about Everson Croft, Vega, Tabitha, Gretchen, Breeyark and more. A wonderful series you should snap up for rainy days, sunny days, and any days inbetween!
Best of the Prof Croft books yet - my favorite! Time travel/time catch has held a fascination for me and I got it in this book along with love and humor. There were a few laugh out loud moments. This series entertains me and that is what I look for in a book. There also only a couple of errors that I noticed and I deeply appreciate that in today's world as well! Thanks Brad and I hope there are many more Prof Croft books on the way!
So many twists and turns so many questions Croft has the upholders will keep Vega and tony safe but he still has to figure out how to make them safe the “quest “ to stop a demon apocalypse just ends up what has to be done who is possessed who’s not and who can be trusted can Croft and Vega get through it all with trust intact such a crazy un dead demon filled apocalypse coming you won’t believe anything till the end
I enjoy Prof Croft as a fun but serious read. Really, I'm so glad Arnaud is really dead, I could dance a jig!!! Everything was tied up in a neat little bow, at the end. I can't wait to see what Brad Magnarella has for Tabitha & baby Vegoft, what new adventures lay ahead for the whole gang. I loved the introduction of Dropsy. And if the other magic users from The Order will ever be done w/ the Harkless Rift.
Night Rune Night Rune by Brad Magnarella was a really wild ride through time and space. I appreciate the time and commitment our author had to create and resolve this series.
It’s well worth the time to read this series and any spinoffs tales in the Croftverse.
I really liked this whole series. It's not like some of the other mage ones. Everson is kinda a dork trying to do things and gradually gets his act together and actually learned a lot about himself and his magic. I can't wait to see how things go on after this'ending'. I'm hoping he gets another 10 or more stories to tell!
Without a doubt another great book in this incredible series of Pro. Croft. I'm glad I bought the entire series v without being let down by any of the volumes. Every chapter tells you a great story and the way it comes together is poetry in motion. Great book , Great series
The series really could end here. Prof Croft has accumulated a good number of friends and teammates for fighting the evil invading our world after the crash. All of their stories come together in this episode and to be honest, I may just stop here because I'm not sure what can of worms will be opened in more books.
Having read the prior books quickly, I was surprised to find myself slow to warm to this one. It took me twice as long as it did the others to finish reading.
It is a solid story, has some good character development and a few neat twists. I'm not sure why, even with a very satisfying ending, I just didn't enjoy it more.
Another great book. The use of "time catches" was a new twist. A big surprise in the end with an incredible ending. Lots of loose ends tied up with this book. You will like it.
I have enjoyed this series to its conclusion? I have become invested with a number of the support characters and hope should more books appear that they continue to rear their "ugly" heads. Highly recommend all the books to date, go get them.
Everson needs to go back into the time catch and rescue his friends and partners. I loved getting to know more of the characters, some whom we’ve been learning about from the very first book!
I love books that hide their plot twists and turns. I don't want to be able to figure it all out ahead of time. You won't be able to here. Or else, go back to solving differential equations in your head while being timed. 😋
More "end of the world as we know it" moments while the author picks up where he left off and away we go. Time travel in all its multiple forms, we really bounce around. Choices have to be made that we never expected and a very fitting ending.
I stepped away from this series for a couple of years. There is no going back and rehashing anything so it was a struggle at first. Eventually I remembered to characters and storyline. This is a good conclusion to this chapter of Croft's adventure. I'm glad more is waiting.
So glad it's finally over. I got so tired of the never ending story of Arnaud. And why does he call his girlfriend by her last name? 8 books and I don't even remember what her first name is. So dumb. The cat was the best part.
