Joy and Success At Work: Building Organizations That Don’t Suck The Life Out Of People

Rate this book
“I can’t wait to get to work!” When was the last time you felt that way? Have you ever? Mark McClain has and still does. He and his leadership teams have focused on creating companies that make the quality of their employees’ work experiences of equal importance to the quality of the solutions those employees create. With Joy and Success at Work, McClain has produced a manual that shares how he and his teams have done it―and how you and your team can, too. Speaking directly to the lack of fulfillment that too often accompanies work―with generous portions of humor and irreverence―Mark McClain deconstructs the modern business environment, then puts it back together. Shot through with pithy tales from his own experiences, Joy and Success at Work is Mark’s honest take on what team building can be, and done right, what it Great places to work that support people’s broader lives, rather than sucking the life out of them.

This was an easy business leadership book to read with short, topical chapters. It was written by Mark McClain, CEO of SailPoint here in Austin, TX.

There were plenty of solid anecdotes and stories but I particularly enjoyed the book closing with a big takeaway chapter. Mark's favorite metaphor for leadership is that of the conductor of an orchestra. It's the conductor's job to extract a cohesive performance from a large group of talented performers, without actively producing a note or even seeing the audience.

Closing the book in this way builds on a lot of values presented in the book. Lead great people, not by performing yourself, but by synchronizing their best performances. Help them shine and "there will be plenty of applause at the end".

Great great book about how Mark McClain is building and managing SailPoint and how he lives, his character and the four I's. I have been at SailPoint now for about 6 months and I think it is all true in the culture. He is definitely doing something right and other CEO's should read his book and actually do some of what he is doing.

The book offers Mark's quick and easy to follow guide outlining the main principles of leadership. There's never a perfect balance, but Mark shows a genuinely human approach towards leading and achieving success.

Mark’s philosophy of leading from your values and creating a successful business while pursuing a life well lived is inspiring. A must read for not only CEO’s but anyone who dreams big.
