Instrument Flying Handbook

Rate this book

The Federal Aviation Administration's Instrument Flying Handbook provides pilots, student pilots, aviation instructors, and controllers with the knowledge and skills required to operate in instrument meteorological conditions.

Illustrated with full-color graphics and photographs, topics covered include basic atmospheric science, the air traffic control system, spatial disorientation and optical illusions, flight support systems, and emergency responses. The book's two appendixes contain information on clearance shorthand and an instrument training lesson guide. Readers will also find a handy glossary and index. Since many questions on FAA exams are taken directly from the information presented in this text, the Instrument Flying Handbook is a great study guide for potential pilots looking for certification, and a perfect gift for any aircraft or aeronautical buff.

I hate how you cannot just have this, but also the IPH and then even so that’s STILL NOT ENOUGH!! Even with the electronic version where I had ctrl+F I couldn’t find half the shit I needed for grounds or, god forbid, my written and checkride. Jesus Christ just SHOW ME THE ASSIGNED CLIMB GRADIENTS BY ALTITUDE!! STOP MAKING ME JUMP THROUGH HOOPS FAA!!!

A great refresher on approach plates
and effective ways to preform the control and performance concept of flying. Very rudimentary, but a great rebaseline.

Between this and the Instrument Flying Handbook, everything you need to pass the FAA's Instrument written exam. Could be usefully supplemented with, say, the Jeppesen book, which has many useful graphics, but a good basic resource.
