Queensland, nord-est de l'Australie, décembre 1918. Une odeur de printemps salé.. Kader, bouleversé regarde le corps défait de sa femme Lislei, mourante. D'étranges dieux ont présidé à leur rencontre. En 1870, Lislei, l'Alsacienne, est emportée dans la tourmente sanglante de la Commune tandis que Kader, l'Algérien, est fait prisonnier au cours de la révolte des tribus sahariennes contre les colons français. Anouar Benmalek est né à Casablanca en 1956. Il a été l'un des fondateurs, après les émeutes d'octobre 1988, du Comité algérien contre la torture. En 1998, il a obtenu le Prix Rachid Mimouni pour son roman Les Amants désunis (Calmann-Lévy, 1997). Il est considéré comme l'un des écrivains essentiels de l'Algérie d'aujourd'hui.

وأنا أقرأ هذه الرواية أحسست بالحزن العميق عند نهايتها , وهو حزن تعمد أنور بن مالك افتعاله في نفس القارئ بمهارة , إذ كيف يعقل لثلاثة أشخاص من مختلف أقطار العالم أن يجتمعوا في هذه الرواية ليشكلوا ملحمة تاريخية مليئة بالصراع الإنساني والذاكرة المشتركة بين الشعوب المضطهدة , إنها عبقرية الكاتب ولاشك هي التي شاءت من أن يغادر قادر بلاده طوعا بسبب المستعمر إلى منفاه الأبدي في أقاصي الأرض أين يلتقي برفيقة دربه الفرنسية ليسلي المضطهدة كذلك من شعب الألزاس ليلتقيا هناك في الأسر وتشاء الصدف ان يفرا على متن قارب نحو أستراليا بحثا عن الحرية ليلتقيا في رحلتهما بطفل أسود البشرة هو آخر من تبقى من شعب تسمانيا الذي ابيد عن أكمله في مجزرة تاريخية تفوق أي مجزرة في تاريخ البشرية . مرة أخرى نلحظ تحري الكاتب لدقة الوصف والتزامه بأدق التفاصيل التي تجعل من القارئ يظن أن الكاتب ليس إلا أستراليا باسم مستعار ولكن ذلك ليس صحيحا . إذ بعدما قرأت الربع الأول من الرواية أصبح الاندهاش من حيوية النص واندماجه بتلك الفترة من التاريخ أمرا مألوفا ومنتظرا من أنور بن ملك. تستمر إذن الرحلة الخطيرة ويكابد الثلاثة قادر وليسلي و تريدارير ابن الشعب الأصيل الأهوال والصعاب ويتعرضون لعنصرية قاسية وخاصة إزاء كل من يختلف عن البيض الذين ألفوا معاملة الشعب الأصلي بأقل من معاملة الحيوان. ويقاتل قادر وليسلي باستماتة لحماية الطفل من القتل والاستعباد والذي بقرت بطنا والديه أمام ناظريه من طرف المستعمرين ثم ملحت أجسامهما لتهرب إلى أوروبا كجلود الحيوانات . وإذ تشتت بهم السبل في شساعة أستراليا وصعوبة تضاريسها يقوم قادر بإظهار شهامته كجزائري فيقف إلى جانب ليسلي و اللذان سيظهران الكراهية والاحتقار لبعضهما البعض غير أنهما يبطنان عكس ذلك تماما. ومع مواصلة الطريق يتمكن الحب منهما فيستسلمان له ليضحيا بما كان يؤملانه في البداية إلى العودة إلى الديار . فتكون أستراليا هي الملجأ الاخير للثلاثة مع نهاية مأساوية لابن الشعب العتيق بعد أن توفيت ليسلي بعد شيخوختها والمرض الذي أودى بحياتها ليبقينا الروائي مع حزن قادر الغامض واشتياقه الذي لا ينتهي للماضي السعيد.

After complaining that The Man Who Spoke Snakish wasn’t as cheerful as I’d hoped, I proceeded to read another novel with precisely the same plot: the last man of a cruelly persecuted people suffers. (Can someone please recommend me fiction that is happy, or at the very least not about genocide. Just for variety.) Rather than reading like a darkly satirical fairy tale, however, ‘The Child of an Ancient People’ takes a realism tone and wallows voluptuously in suffering as only French novels can. The three main characters all experience horrible abuses at the hands of authorities, pirates, and miscellaneous bystanders. In the face of all this horror, they gradually form a bond. I found the voices and characterisation strong; there was also a distinct sense of place. Benmalek writes beautifully and movingly. I can hardly fault the unremitting cruelty of events, either, as this is a novel about colonialism, which was defined by cruel inhumanity. Nonetheless, you might not want to read it if you’re feeling fragile as there is so much violence, plenty of it against children, as well as several instances of rape. The minutiae of suffering, and the feelings they evoke, also cause the plot to move very slowly at times. Given the quality of the writing, though, there was nothing gratuitous about it. ‘The Child of an Ancient People’ deals with the colonialist past that we in the Western world are more comfortable forgetting and personalises the horrors that took place with impressive power.

تستحق أربع نجمات كنت سأعطيها خمس، رواية الكاتب الجزائري أنور بن مالك "ابن الشعب العتيق" ملحمة فريدة من نوعها تجمع قصصا من أربع قارات كاملة، قصة قادر الجزائري الذي نفي إلى كاليدونيا الجديدة وما حدث له بالتقاءه فتاة فرنسية عارضت نظام الحكم في بلدها سبعينييات القرن التاسع عشر.. إلى قصة ابن من أبناء السكطان الأصليين لاستراليا الذي تبنوه ودافعوا عنه.. أنصح بقراءتها

It was like one of those big imperial-age romances, except anti-imperialist. If imperial pulp is a thing, this was victims of imperialism -- the French and British empires. With atrocity, an unconventionalised love story, an ambivalent hero, funny and memorable lines.

The story was well written I thought, but the content in terms of 'Kader's' beliefs and choices disappointed me. It shows such a horrible state of humanity at the 19th century.

هي عبارة عن مجموعة أحداث كانت بدايتها في ثلاث قارات، ليجتمع بعدها ثلاثة أشخاص من مناطق مختلفة لم يكن لهم ليجتمعوا لولا الصدفة....

فقادر الجزائري سليل عائلة الأمير عبد القادر، يعتقل بتهمة محاربة الإستعمار الفرنسي يلتقي مع ليسلي الفرنسية من مقاطعة الألزاس المتهمة بمحاربة العامية الفرنسية يلتقيان في فرقاطة فرنسية تقودها إلى المنفى في أقصى أصقاع الأرض كاليدونيا الجديدة ليكون عليهم الخوض في تجربة قاسية السجن، الجوع، التعذيب، الهرب كآخر حل، ثم التيه في تلك المساحات العذراء الشاسعة المليئة بالمخاطر، حيوانات ضارية جائعة، و بعض مما تبقى من السكان الأصليين الذين ينتقمون من العنصر الأبيض كيفما سمحت لهم الظروف. ليُرسم لهما مصيرا واحدا مشتركا كرفقة الصبي من شعب #آبوس السكان الأصليين اسمه تيراديرا #تيد باختصار هذا الفتى الذي شاهد موت والديه بسبب وحشية العنصر الأبيض المدعي المحافظة على حقوق الإنسان ليحميه كل من قادر و ليسلي متحدين بذلك كل الصعاب، و هذا الصبي هو آخر ممثل لأبناء شعبه سكان تسامانيا المحليين الذين تم إبادتهم جماعات و فرادى بأبشع الطرق و الامكانيات، للأسف فلم يبق من يخبر عنهم، فكان تيدي يحاول البحث عن مسالك الأحلام الميثاوية التي كان يؤمن بها شعبه.

يعيش الثلاثة مغامرات كادت تودي بحياتهم ليستمروا في العيش سويا إلى أن يفرقهم الموت بعد ما كانت ليسلي أول مغادرين هذا العالم، ليحلق بها تيدي، و يبقى قادر رفقة ابنه و احفاده بعد أن تزوج ليسلي

الرواية سلطت الضوء على بعض الأحداث في الجزائر إبان الاحتلال الفرنسي و تحدث الكاتب عن بعض الثورات التي كانت سببا في أجبار الآلاف من المواطنين مغادرة البلاد نحو كاليدونيا الجديدة ذلك المنفى البعيد جدا و جدا.

رواية تجعل القارئ يتأثر كثيرا بأحداثها لكم أن تتخيلوا حرب، و حب يكاد يحبس الأنفاس، شوق للعودة الى أرض الوطن تلك الأرض التي تبدو بعيدة و كأنها في غير كوكب، إستفاقة للإنسانية في أقصى درجات الضعف، و أحلام تقتات من بقايا الألم.

في مجملها رواية انسانية تاريخية رغم أنها مترجمة إلا المترجمة أبدعت كثيرا و هذا إن دل فإنما يدل على قوة لغتها الأصلية

A heartwrenching tale of tragedy and injustice heaped upon one another, plaiting together the horrors of colonialism in Northern Africa and Australia as well as the fall of the Paris Commune. This novel's scope was grand and Benmalek did a good job of keeping the 'adventure' plot rolling on while doing justice to the backgrounds of his three lost-soul protagonists. The writing was evocative and beautiful, although the occasionally stilted dialogue and eccentric use of tense had a distancing effect for me.

Le contexte historique est intéressant mais le bouquin est décevant. Les personnages sont peu crédibles : le déporté algérien qui finit par tomber amoureux de la communarde qui elle-même se laisse séduire, leur amour inconditionnel pour le petit Abo. Il faut se rappeler que la pensée universelle à l’époque vis-à-vis des noirs était celle des australiens (leur comportement très bien rendu par l’auteur est en revanche assez extrême mais probablement assez répandu dans toutes les colonies). L’itinéraire pour aller de Nouvelle Calédonie en Australie en passant par la Tasmanie est assez curieux. Le récit quant à lui est assez haché avec des passages lyriques qui cassent le rythme. En revanche le thème des déportés communards et rescapés de la révolte des Mokrani est nouveau et instructif. Je ne savais pas que la Nouvelle Calédonie était comme la Guyane une colonie pénale.

موضوع جديد تماما يحكي عن الإنسان الذي حتى و إن اختلف موطنه فإن ألمه واحد
قادر المنفي لأنه ثار ضد المستعمر في أرضه ، ليسلي المحكومة ظلما وتيردارير آخر من نجى من إبادة شعبه تجمعهم الأقدار في رحلة للهرب من ظلم الإنسان
رواية جميلة مختلفة لدي بعض التحفظات عما ورد فيها من تجاوزات
ورغم أن النسخة الرديئة من الرواية وفقدانها لبعض الصفحات، قد أثارت بعض استيائي إلا اني استمتعت بالرواية

This one was a hard one for me - such terrible things happen the whole way through - and mostly to the people who love and protect the last Tasmanian Aborigine. Read it during the day on a strong cup of tea.
