THE FIRST EVER IN-DEPTH EXPOSÉ OF WHAT HAPPENS IN INDIA TO ANIMALS CONSUMED FOR WHAT IS, AFTER ALL, A FLEETING MOMENT OF TASTE.
The world today eats more than seven times the amount of meat it consumed in 1950. In India alone, the meat eaten per person has more than doubled in just a decade. To meet this growing demand, some 77 billion land animals and trillions of fish are killed globally every year.
These creatures aren’t just numbers. They were breathing, feeling beings whose lives were precious to them. But most were reared in intensive farming systems, alongside thousands or even millions of others in severe confinement, or faced other kinds of brutalities as they were used to mass-produce cheap meat, eggs or dairy foods.
For a Moment of Taste is a probing, revelatory work by Poorva Joshipura, a senior member of an affiliate of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), that draws on investigations by her and other researchers into the treatment of animals as part of standard but shocking industry practices. It shows what happens to them from birth until slaughter; how today’s meat, egg and dairy production systems came to be; the current state of these industries in India; and the consequences of where they are headed if dietary trends do not change. It also lays out the health and environmental impacts of the production and consumption of animal-based products.
This eye-opening book is sure to make you reflect on how foods you choose can help save animals’ lives, improve your health, and preserve the planet.
AN EYE OPENER! This book is practically everything you need to know about making a change in your lifestyle to truly contribute towards the planet, a healthy life for yourself and to fight global issues like animal cruelty, climate change, water shortage and even world hunger.
I happened to pick this book up during the COVID19 outbreak and was stupefied at how much our collective behavior corroborates to the book and how Joshipura pretty much predicted the pandemic, down to where it would all begin. This one's a MUST READ!
Poorva's own experiences and narration of her visits to abattoirs, laboratories and slaughterhouses which depict the harsh realities of how animals are maimed and killed so that we humans can use them for food or as an accessory, is truly heart-wrenching. With so much information and solution to making a transition in order to not hurting animals, there's no reason why one should still continue using animals who were never ours in the first place, to eat, wear, experiment upon, or for entertainment.
A MUST READ!!! Veganism is the present and future way of life and this book truely explains why. The hardcore reality of cruelty inflicted upon animals is heartbreaking. The book not only motivates you to turn vegan but also unfolds why consuming / abusing animals for any purpose, puts humanity at stake and is unacceptable, under any circumstance. In this current pandemic situation, this book is truely an eye opener to reflect how your FOOD can not just impact your health but the environment too!!
The book is a well written well references work, even though I do not agree with many of PETA's approach, the overall message of the environmental, health and social impact of animal cruelty does get home. While she advocates the vegan lifestyle, the book could have done with a more nuanced explanation of how acccessible are soya chunks and almond milk, to the populace.
Mind blowing! A perfect truth bomb exposing what we humans have been doing to the planet and the animals. P.S - My favourite line, "The dog who adopted Soum and me, is called Mehboob." ❤️ A much needed, must read!

With the advent of coronavirus, which is a zoonotic disease breed out of a live animal market in Wuhan China, I was stupefied at how much our collective behavior corroborates to the book and how Poorva Joshipura pretty much predicted the pandemic, down to where it would all begin.
