Hedgehog & Friends

Rate this book

Cute intermezzo in a heavy reading series: The Hug. Adorable drawings, big book, cute story of a hedgehog and a tortoise both trying to get a hug because they are feeling a bit down and run into various animals who find all kinds of excuses not to give a hug. Both ending with a wise owl who says no worries, you'll find someone. And then... they find each other. The cute part is that the book has two sides. One of the hedgehog and one of the tortoise and yes... they meet in the middle... in a hug :-)
Might I trouble you for a small hug, asked Tortoise
Not right now, said Rabbit, Unfortunately I'm digging a very important hole...

Yeah, cute intermezzo, lovely drawings, fun for all ages really!

Start from front or start from back...you will end up in the same place, smack in the middle, a place of joy. Two stories are one story and they are all about the difficulty of connecting. It's a delight of a little picture book, with big fun illustrations and sly text, and it always ends in deep happiness.

This book was so adorable. I loved the illustration style and the high quality edition was a nice treat too. It's been forever since I've seen one of those books where there's another story upside down in the back (I'm explaining it badly, but you know what I'm talking about), and it was so lovely that they connected. <3 I can't decide if I'm the hedgehog or the turtle... XD

A lovely, happy book about a hedgehog and a tortoise who were sad and wanted a hug. None of the animals would hug them and then they found each other and were really happy they could hug each other. This book has quite a different layout with both of the stories strongly reflecting the same themes but starting at different ends of the book. The stories meet in the middle when the characters meet. This could be a fun book to read with KS1 or FS children.

A flip book. On one side a hedgehog wants a hug, but he's to prickly for the other animals. On the other side, a tortoise wants a hug, but his shell is too hard for the other animals. The two meet in the middle.

I read another book which was about a hedgehog looking for a hug and it ended up finding another hedgehog. There are a few too many picture books starring animals where the underlying message seems to be "you should stick to your own kind." I like this book better.

I loved this book as the message was really lovely and I would definitely use this in the classroom. Tortoise is sad and he wants a hug so asks the other animals for one but they don't give him one. Owl says it because his shell its too hard and then he meets hedgehog and they hug and are very happy. This comes together in the middle of the book. One half of the book is in tortoise's point of view and the other half is hedgehog, I found this confusing when reading but this is something children could figure out how to read the book.

Reflections and lessons learned:
Awww - of course this was going to be lovely - we may be missing the external hugs, but at least there are books like this to remind us of normal times. I want to hug hedgehog and tortoise as a result, and we’re all trying to work out which end of the book we live more

Aw, I loved this book. It just proves what I've always believed and hope children will see the positive message this books offers. "You are never alone in the great big world".
