Catherine Doyle grew up in the West of Ireland. She holds a first-class BA in Psychology and a first-class MA in Publishing. She is the author of the Young Adult Blood for Blood trilogy (Vendetta, Inferno and Mafiosa), which is often described as Romeo and Juliet meets the Godfather. It was inspired by her love of modern cinema. Her debut Middle Grade novel, The Storm Keeper's Island (Bloomsbury, 2018), is an adventure story about family, bravery and self-discovery. It is set on the magical island of Arranmore, where her grandparents grew up, and is inspired by her ancestors' real life daring sea rescues.
Aside from more conventional interests in movies, running and travelling, Catherine also enjoys writing about herself in the third-person.
Fionn Boyle, Arranmore island's storm keeper is back. It has been six months since Fionn rescued his sister, Tara from the sea cove and became the next storm keeper. All the islanders, descendants and non-descendants alike are expecting Fionn to save the day when it comes to it but Fionn magical he may be, isn't able to access his magic. Even Tara has been learning to wield the candle magic and getting good at it and she throws that in Fionn's face every chance she gets it.
Fionn has become good friends with another descendant, Sam and he always encourages Fionn and believes in him. Fionn's nightmares have become more frequent and more darker. Few days before Christmas, ferries come full of soulstalkers and they spread diseases to the island animals. Everyone rounds up to the Boyles to come up with a plan. Tara, their mother and their grandfather come up with a plan to teach candle magic to the descendants but Fionn doesn't like it but he can't do much as he cannot access his magic.
Fionn learns of the tide summoner and with Sam and Shelby's help, he finds out where he can find the tide summoner. But moving isn't as easy as they thought it'd be as Ivan gives an ultimatum of one day to hand Fionn over to him on the winter solstice so that he can raise Morrigan with Fionn's blood. Ivan also leaves soulstalkers to follow Fionn everywhere. Fionn with Sam, Shelby, Tara and even Bartley's help ends up finding the tide summoner but it doesn't respond to him and that's when he realizes that it is tied to Shelby.
Ivan finds out their plan and also about the candle magic and destroys thousands of candles. Fionn comes up with one last-stand plan but Elizabeth Beasley sells Fionn out to Ivan and Ivan kidnaps Fionn and raises Morrigan. Fionn's family and friends come to his rescue and Fionn is finally able to access his magic and that magic even surprises Morrigan.
I loved Fionn in this too just like I loved him in the first book and I understood his frustration when he couldn't access his magic and he tried to do all the right things but things kept on going wrong. I felt for him when Tara didn't believe in him. I felt for him whenever his grandfather started to lose his memories more frequently.
I loved Fionn's grandfather, Malachy from the very beginning and I cried at the end for him. I loved Fionn and Malachy's relationship and their special bond from one storm keeper to another. I also loved Sam and Shelby. However, I did think that Shelby being the tide summoner was like a consolation prize. Meaning that because she wasn't a descendant because she was adopted, the author gave her this thing to make up to her but I liked her nonetheless. I still didn't like Tara for some reason. Fionn's mother is a good addition to the series but I have yet to like her. I really tried but when she revealed all those secrets from long ago, I just could not bring myself to like her. Rose was mysterious and I'd like to know more about her and I think we will read more about her in the next book. I loved when Fionn and Sam smartly put Bartley in his place. All the other supporting characters were again well thought out. So many secrets are revealed further in this and I couldn't stop reading and devouring.
I have read in other reviews that this series is based on Irish folklore and I do have to say that I have not read many Irish folklores but after reading this series, I so want to read more Irish folklores. This series is spellbinding and Catherine Doyle's writing flows from page to page that it doesn't let me put the book down. I read this book in one sitting as well.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this series so far! Holy smokes. The first book made me teary, and so did this one. Doyle can really just yank on my heartstrings every single time, it seems.
I liked the progression of the overall story and that there are many more people involved now than were really involved in the first installment. Fionn has grown some but not an unbelievable amount. He has a fair amount of internal growth, realizing that some problems are bigger than he can handle. I really enjoyed the addition of Sam to the story, and I think Sam rounds out their small group pretty well. He and some other side characters had challenges of their own, so I appreciated seeing some of the other characters having to overcome some blocks that they were going through as well.
I will admit though that his sister was making me so frustrated. She treats Fionn so badly, and then it all seems to be fine and everyone moves forward without her having to have any growth herself. She is incredibly logical and barely has any empathy which can be frustrating to read when it's clear Fionn is struggling emotionally. There's a throwaway line about her being the only one that can give Fionn a hard time, but she's present for loads of people kicking Fionn in his emotional soft spots and she shoves it in his face. This book really made me disinterested in her which sucks since I did enjoy her challenging Fionn in the first book. Hopefully she has to go through some growth of her own in the next installment or I'll really struggle. I took way longer reading this book because I took breaks every time Tara would treat Fionn like garbage.
"The Lost Tide Warriors" was an enchanting and heartbreaking sequel that made me even more emotional than "The Storm Keeper's Island".
Although there were times that I found Fionn frustrating, I would say that the character development and family dynamics were written better in this installment. Tara and Fionn's mom Evie was a wonderful addition to this series. She's stronger than I gave her credit for and I wish that we have more cool moms like her, especially in middle grade/young adult fiction. Malachy had been lovable since the first book, but his bond with Tara and Fionn had become stronger in this book, making their interactions more emotional and powerful. It's not just the familial bonds that tugged at my heartstrings. I also liked seeing Fionn become closer friends with Shelby and Sam. They were a lovely trio and I'm hoping to get to know Sam in book 3. As for character growth, Shelby and Tara impressed me the most because they were so smart and badass. I'd love to see more of their badassery in the next installment!
In terms of writing, "The Lost Tide Warriors" was just as spellbinding as "The Storm Keeper's Island". If you have a fondness for vicious merrows, you'd probably find this a more exciting read.
If you plan to read this and you're emotionally attached to the characters, you might want to get some tissues ready. A cup of hot water with one tea bag left in for exactly two and a half minutes and a thirty-millilitre splash of milk would be a big help too.
I am so so grateful to Bloomsbury for letting me read this a little early. I adored Storm Keepers Island, wholeheartedly and completely so I was desperate to find out what would happen next.
The relationship o’Doyle has built between Fionn and his grandad is so powerful and heartwarming by the end I was audibly ugly crying on public transport. I love this series, I love its roots in Celtic mythology. I love it’s spirit and the tenderness of its masculinity. I love the wonderful and beautiful magic system that is being built. O’Doyle finds a balance of gorgeous writing and mixes it with good humour and perfect pacing to make a book that can be love by all. An instant classic in my opinion

A love letter to Irish folklore, filled with a deeply entrenched magical history that stretches beyond the pages of the book. The characters are so vividly real that I feel like I've known them forever.
Hmm not as good as the first one. Somehow I didn’t enjoy it as much. I think it’s because the characters didn’t get to catch a break and reflect the things that are happening. Also it was quite dark and I saw a lot of things coming... I’m a bit disappointed.
Täysin unheard of.
i really liked it. it was the sequel to the storm keepers island. Fionn Boyle has been the storm keeper of Arranmore for less that half a year when thousands of terrifing soulstalkers arrive on the island.its up to Fionn to save the island from what its about to face but Fionn has to discover how to use his own magic before he can save the island.
I'm very grateful to Bloomsbury for granting me early access to this book. Deeply moving in parts, with fast-paced action throughout, lots of genuine chills, the same wondrous sense of place and magic as its predecessor, and some hilarious bits, The Lost Tide Warriors is a skilfully written and engaging story. I'm very much looking forward to Book 3!
This is a continuation of the first book and wow was it amazing but also heartbreaking.
Fionn's adventures with his friends, family and fellow islanders continue in this sequel and the stakes are even higher as Fionn tries to figure out why his magic doesn't want to cooperate, how to keep his loved ones safe and wondering if he's really cut out to be a Storm Keeper.
This book was full of the beauty of Ireland interlaced with myths, the power of friendship, believing in yourself, family love, a touch of prophesy and so many surprises along the way.
I loved Fionn's relationship with his Grandpa as well as the friendships he's developed since moving to Arranmore Island from the mainland. My heart ached for all that Fionn and his family goes through in this book and the hard choices that had to be made.
Can't wait to hopefully continue this series soon when the next book is released and to see what next is in store for Fionn, his fellow islanders and his family.
Highly recommend checking out this book!
Trigger warnings: death of a parental figure, some violence
“Because gratitude for what we have been gifted is the antidote to the grief we feel when we must give it back.”
I really, really enjoyed The Storm Keeper's Island, but I absolutely loved The Lost Tide Warriors. The build up of the story is so well done as all the elements come crashing together towards the end. I love Fionn and his grandfather, Malachy. Their bond is so wonderful. It's great to see Fionn come into his own a bit although he still has a way to go. I like that he isn't an instant hero, but has to work to learn to use his magic. Tara and Bartley are still annoying and I'm hoping they will finally grow up and become better people in the last book. I'm not sure I could read this one aloud to my kids through my tears, but I'll definitely be saving it for them when they are a little older. I do recommend this for older middle grade readers. The battle scene is an intense one. I can't wait to read the epic conclusion of the series so I'll be diving right into The Storm Keepers' Battle next.
A fabulous read with a great cast of characters, a gripping and entertaining plot and an amazing world building. Strongly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Absolutely fantastic sequel that builds on all the strengths of the first and adding its own. The emotional heart of the story is between grandfather and grandson and it made me cry in the best way - twice. Brilliant action, a realistic and well paced escalation that brings the series to another level!
The second in the series sees Fionn, along with friends and enemies old and new, battling against Soulseekers determined to revive Morrigan.
First of all, this isn't the book to start with. Although things are explained reasonably well as you go along, you'll still likely be confused for quite a portion of it.
However, if you've read the first one, this is a fantastic follow up, expanding the mythology and keeping the same wonderful tone. I cried - quite a bit - and read as fast as I can. I still love the magic system, I've still never seen anything like it, and I'm very excited to read the third one to find out what happens next.
I received an ARC and chose to write an honest review.
(This isn't the section I wanted to copy, but my favourite one made me cry and I couldn't see the words. This one shows the use of language very well.)
The candle in Sam’s fist was shaking violently. “I regret this decision,” he called over his shoulder, just as Hughie released a triumphant shout, pulled his free hand into his chest and closed it into a fist.
The sky ignited.
There were three awful seconds of nothingness when both vessels seemed to hang by an invisible thread, then the wind snapped and the sky roared and the world dropped. The wave surged over The Corpus, taking them all with it, screaming at the top of their lungs. Hughie Rua threw his head back and laughed as they flew down, down, down, following his billowing sails into the sea.
The wind pulled their cheeks from their mouths and stole their breath, their stomachs flip ping upside down and inside out as they cut through the air. Their screams ran their voices hoarse before they hit the water.
Then they left the world behind them, piercing the skin of the ocean in two identical points.
Honestly, not quite as good as book number one, in my opinion, but still a riveting read; one that I could not put down. A compelling storyline and all of our favourite characters. I can't wait to see what the next book will bring!
