I'm not a huge fan of vampires, but have read or watched a few vampire stories that I've really enjoyed. However, "Secrets," just did not grab my attention. I struggled to get into the story because it just felt very bland and matter-of-fact.

Leah is 22 and has always had some unusual abilities that she has mostly kept to herself. She knows nothing about her father and her mother refuses to give her any information, even her after repeated questioning. It was very obvious to me that we are dealing with vampires, but Leah seems to be clueless. I wasn't sure if that was entirely realistic.

Then, shortly after we meet her, things change suddenly and dramatically for Leah. Once again it seemed TOO quickly. Out of nowhere, her mom is dead, and Leah is learning about the existence of things she never imagined. Yet, she takes it all remarkably well.

Oh, and one other thing: while all this is going on, over the course of just a day or two, she meets, falls in love with, and has sex with her soulmate. This is Leah's first time having sex, ever, and she is SURE that Raine is her soulmate. Really? I mean, with everything going on...it just seemed very overwhelming for a single person to deal with. Why couldn't this story have built over a longer period of time? I think that would have at least made it better for me.

There needed to be more of an emotional connection for me to like Leah. It just wasn't there. As for the other characters, there are a lot of them, and it seemed like they all had names that began with the letter "D." That only added to my confusion. I kept wondering if there was some reason for this? If so, it wasn't explained.

This is only book 1 in a series, and there may be answers on the way, but unfortunately, I don't have any desire to read book two. However, if you like vampire romances, maybe you will enjoy this more than I did - give it a try and see for yourself.

I'm going to be generous and give this one a 4/5, simply for the story.

I desperately wish there was more flavor text, just to season the characters and heighten the drama. The editing in this edition made a fun game of spotting errors, but they were harder to ignore when the presentation of the narrative felt less like a thriller and more like recounting my day over tea with a friend.

That said, I will be finishing the series just to see where it goes.
