Reading like a conversation around a campfire, this is an entertaining collection of yarns about mysterious monsters who stalk the Mountain State--at least according to those who swear they encountered them! As others have noted, the author presents the tales straightforwardly. This one is a fun "spooky season" read.
This little book is an enjoyable read, collecting and fleshing out variations of the white beast tales. White beast stories are not moral stories (most of the time). The beast appears in the dark to threaten or attack humans. McCoy obviously enjoys talking to his sources, and treats them with respect. The story belongs to each teller as well as the collector who includes himself in the searching and the telling. In the end, sometimes a monster is just a monster, but a good story is far more.
This is a very entertaining book of anecdotes about various unexplained white creatures that have been spotted in various places in West Virginia. McCoy's style is friendly and fun to read. He relates the stories as they are told and makes no judgment about whether they are true or not.
