They've had a wonderful family day. Jaime Connor drops her husband and her children off at their house, while she runs to the store to pick up some munchies for movie night.
An accidental bump into a young man leads to violence and an abduction. Two teenagers grab her in the parking lot and away they go .....
During the investigation, Kayli has to determine if this was a random act ... or was Jaime specifically targeted? What are Jaime's family not saying?
As always with this author's books, and especially this series, I found it to be well-crafted with a plot, somewhat complex, but easy to follow. The main characters are deftly drawn and it's fun to see how they have grown since the first in this series. Although 6th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. The suspense begins with the very first page and builds throughout until the very last page.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Kayli and her partner Dave are back with another enthralling case. The pairing of these two alone, captures the readers attention. There is a great working chemistry between them as well as a solid friendship. It always makes a more enjoyable reading experience when you have such a great crime fighting duo.
The case itself, the further into it we get, the more complex it becomes. Questions were running through my mind as to the why’s of this particular crime. It didn’t make any sense why someone would kidnap a total stranger. As things become more clear though, I was in for some shocking revelations.
Taken is a story that held me captive and once started, it didn’t let me go until the very last page. Yep that’s right, I read this in one wonderfully, gripping sitting. I love when a book gets its claws straight into you, making it impossible to put down. Not many authors manage to have me do this but this is one that does it without fail. A nail biter of a read.
My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
It seems beyond belief that a young mum can be abducted from outside a supermarket with no obvious reason. Her husband is beside himself with worry especially when the supermarket CCTV confirms the violence that was used to take her. DI Kayli Bright and her partner have little else to go on and they are not prepared when things get much worse. Another nerve-jangling read in this brilliant series.
This is my review of Taken by M A Comley. It’s the sixth book in the DI Kayli Bright series which is set in Bristol.
Jaime, her husband and two children decide to head out for the day. Andy, her husband, has planned where they are going and to start with, the children weren’t keen but by the end they loved it! When they got back home Jaime just nipped to the shop for some extra treats when she accidentally bumped into someone entering the shop. Although she apologised, she could hear him badmouthing her all the way into the shop with the other shoppers giving her a wide berth. At the checkout, there was no sign of him and she breathed a huge sigh of relief.
When she got to the car though, he came up behind her and thumped her. He made her get in the car and drive to another bank to get more money out before leaving the city. Jaime hated driving and was so nervous with him by her side especially when he made her go onto the motorway which she dreaded driving on. In the end, he took over the driving and went wild, Jaime just clung to the seat fearing for her life while Daz weaved between the cars.
The shop worker luckily had spotted the incident and reported the incident to the police along with Andy, her husband. DI Kayli Bright and her partner, DS Dave Chaplin picked up the call but for them they couldn’t work out why Jaime might have been targeted. Did she know this young man? They get a fix on Jaime’s mobile phone so race to check it out only to find it’s a site at the side of the M5 motorway, no sign of Jaime but Kayli manages to find the mobile. Must have been thrown from the car. But where was Jaime? They decide to issue an appeal with the pictures from the CCTV camera in the CO-OP and see if they get anything from that.
They receive some news from the appeal but unfortunately then the kidnapper strikes again but what is motivation? Why has he targeted these people?
Can DI Kayli Bright catch this kidnapper who seems to be outwitting them? He seems to have it all planned out? Why now?
Wow! This is a fast paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I just loved it. It’s wonderfully dark and the way I like my books. A great addition to an already brilliant series!
I think I'm completely out of original superlatives to describe any of this authors books. She has done it again with another breathtaking story, that had me completely on the edge of my seat.
This is only the second book in the Kayli Bright series that I have read, and it really does seem to have a different feel to the others. I'm really enjoying discovering just what sort of DI Kayli is, and getting to know her home dynamic too.
At no point during the story did I come up with the reason for the abductors to be doing what they did, they were continually one step ahead of me and the police, with the exception that as a reader I was treated to occasional chapters focusing on what they were up to.
I actually felt slightly bad for one of the bad guys, which is a rather unsettling feeling, but once you've read this you'll understand why.
Not necessarily the smartest or most dastardly of M. A. Comley's villains, they still lead the police on a merry dance and without a doubt are dangerous.
Simply put, a thrilling book that I was hooked on.
Thank you to the author for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Kayli Bright and her partner Dave are investigating a missing woman who disappeared during a trip to her local supermarket. What at first is thought to be a random kidnapping, wrong place, wrong time, turns out to be so much more as the story evolves. Daz and Billie, the kidnappers, at first seem like brutal monsters, but as the story continued, I could not help drawing towards one of them as she herself was victimised. I always love reading books with team Kayli and Dave and Taken was no exception. Not for one moment did I guess the true reason behind the abductions. Another exciting book by the wonderful MA Comley that kept me glued to my kindle and did not want to put down.
I love the characters in this series and I was really keen to be able to catch up with Kayli and her partner Dave, as well as the rest of the team, they have a great working relationship and they are a fabulous pairing when they are together.
I thought that the story was really well developed and I was left guessing as to what might happen next. The pace for the book was great, I read it in one sitting and flew through the pages as I needed to know how it would all end. The book is definitely one that will have you hooked!
This is the sixth book in the fabulous DI Kayli Bright series but it is absolutely fine to be read as a stand alone too.
It is another 5 star read from this author - I loved the story from start to finish, and the cover for the book suits the story perfectly too - very highly recommended!!
Audiobook review This story just grabbed me from the start. Janine is out & about living her daily life and then she’s abducted. The danger from there just mounts up & gets worse. Kayli & her team have a fight & a fast chase on their hands. Narrator was great & kept the story pace interesting.
I enjoyed reading this book. The suspense builds up throughout the book, making it hard to put down. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys reading a good mystery.
This author has a way of making every new read a surprise. This one is no exception. This one has one of my fears on how to go out. I'm pretty sure I still don't want to go out that way.
DI Kayli Bright and her team definitely have a thinker on their hands.
Jaime Connor and her husband Andy ,along with their two children Tori13, and Jake 11 have just returned from a fun filled family day out..On arriving home Jaime decides to pop out for some treats for later when they cosy in to watch a film ..When Jaime goes to the grocery store..and accidentally bumps in to someone..It is an altercation that will lead her on dangerous ground ..As D.I.Kayli Bright and her partner D.S.Dave Chaplin investigate Jaime's disappearance..It is a case that like a puzzle they will have to put together piece by piece..Whilst one family falls apart at the seams..Kayli Bright is haunted by what she has seen..As they work against the clock..someone else goes missing..Digging deeper into the past, a past that for some is long forgotten..for others the past is never where you left it..What follows next will not only break the case wide open..Kayli is about to cross paths with a Twisted Soul. An Embittered Monster..And for some this moment will leave its scars forever..I finished this at 4.am in the morning ..A Dark Velvet Black Twisted Thriller that will leave your nerves in shreds ...
DI Kayli Bright and DS Dave Chaplin are investigating an auction case. The Victim Jamie Connor and her family went out for the day until Jamie goes back out to grab some things. She is confronted by two teenagers and disappears.
As with all Mel's books, This was a very quick read. It was extremely difficult to pop down once you began.
Kayli and Dave are incredible characters partner.
As kaylis characters and personal life continues to develop it is thoroughly enjoyable to go along for the ride.
Daz is a manipulative and violent monster, who also abuses, beat and instils fear into his girlfriend.
Billy seemingly is portrayed as a nasty character but she is also being battered, fear-stricken and abused by her partner. My opinions of Billy kept changing continually. And whether or not I love or hate her.
Mel is exceedingly terrific at creating characters, she does a fantastic job of portraying both favourable and unfavourable characters. She creates fascinating quirky flawed characters with backstories with plenty of deepness and depth.
Her writing style is no-nonsense storytelling at it's best.
My favourite things about this book are obviously the tremendous crime-busting duo.
I love how seemingly complex this case was with an unpleasant set of baddys with one giving you conflicting uneasy feelings throughout.
When Jaime goes to get some snacks for her family after a day out, nobody expects her not to return. Why has Jaime been abducted, what possible reason could there be? Can Kayli, Dave and the team find Daz and Billie (Jaime’s abductors) before anyone else is hurt? As time moves on and the case becomes more complex, can the team get the information they need to ensure all ends well? The main characters are great and it’s always good to have them back together in another book in the series. The author always manages to write horrid criminals and does well at writing their awful personalities into the stories. A well written book and series, I hope there will be more.
So, we are now on book 6 of what was originally a trilogy but I guess the characters had other ideas about their longevity and, I think they were right... I won't bore you but usual series rules apply if you want to get the very best from this book and indeed the entire series, even though the main story is self-contained. Jamie Connor has a bit of an encounter whilst popping out to the shop. An encounter that turns bad real quick as her life is put in danger. DI Kaylie Bright is swiftly on the case but is scuppered in her advancement by information being withheld. This causes more pain to more people and sends Kaylie and trusty sidekick DS Dave Chaplin on a game of cat-and-mouse as they try to catch up with the wave of destruction being meted out by a couple of really nasty characters. It's hard to say anything else about this book as to do so might inject spoilers and also the blurb itself gives little away. Suffice to say that this book exceeded my already very high expectations from both this author and the series and left me speechless at its conclusion. Oh and completely shattered from the journey it took me on. It contains everything you'd expect from the author and at the high quality she always delivers. All wrapped around a plot that kept me on my toes and guessing throughout. So deliciously devious and intricately plotted, it was delivered at breakneck speed and it was all I could do as a reader to just follow the sick and twisted road that the characters were taking me on. It captured me from page one and I read straight through in just one sitting (I know from old that I have to clear the decks for this author) so strongly it held me in its thrall. Spitting me out exhausted but wholly satisfied at its conclusion. Another winner to add to a more than impressive back catalogue. Really can't wait to see what Kaylie gets up to next time...
Taken – Mel Comley When you hear the title, “Taken”, I am sure you too had visions of the Liam Neeson movies: him talking slo-o-o-o-wly over a phone, threatening some unspeakable horrors to some hapless henchmen that took his daughter … But don’t let that fool you. While “Taken” by Mel Comley might have the same title, the story is much more layered, much more intriguing and ultimately much more captivating than a 90 min action flick. By now Comley’s fans know detective inspector Kayli Bright and her partner, detective sergeant Dave Chaplin, quite well as this is the 6th book in the series. In “Taken”, we meet Jaime Connor. She is abducted and while her life hangs in the balance, Bright and Chaplin have to uncover a few home truths to save her. While this started as a seemingly random crime, more is revealed about Jaime and her family and soon Bright and Chaplin realize they are Jaime’s only hope. This is the 6th installment with Bright and Chaplin and certainly a very worthy addition to the series. From the onset, the familiar characters are presented with clarity, clear purpose and strong, believable motivations. “Taken” never veers into the familiar, the predictable or the expected. I enjoyed the strong message of survival, struggle and strength that shines through Bright and Chaplin’s efforts to save Jaime’s life. The story moves along at a brisk pace, only stopping long enough to make sure a reader catches up to the action. A very enjoyable thriller!
This series was supposed to be a trilogy but Kayli Bright really endeared herself to her readers and so it would have been a crime to abandon her after only 3 books! So we are now on book 6 and this series just keeps getting better!
I loved how this story started off on such a happy note with Andy and Jaime and their two children out for a lovely family day out. On their return home, Jaime goes to the local Co-op for snacks for the family night they have planned to keep the family fun going. While there she had an altercation with another customer and then disappeared, taken in a totally random kidnapping, and Kayli and Dave are brought in to find her before it’s too late…
I think this is my favourite case for Kayli so far. With a Bonnie and Clyde and Natural Born Killers vibe, these young characters carrying out such heinous crimes shocked the hell out of me! And as the plot moved along at a cracking pace, the shocks just kept on coming. Kayli and Dave make a great team and their realistic approach to this case made it stand out as one of their best outings. I don’t know how Mel Comley does it, writing such inspired and relevant crime scenarios that grip her readers from first page to last. My mum has become a big fan too now since I introduced her to Mel Comley books so I know how easily she becomes an addiction! Taken was a compelling idea that was well written and handled perfectly-I loved it…and so my mum!
Wow, another thrilling and nail biting story that will have you looking behind and around you at the supermarket and in the car park! After a lovely day out with her husband, Andy, and their children, Jaime decided to go to the supermarket to buy some special treats for the family to enjoy whilst they watched a film together that evening. DI Kayli Bright and her partner, Mark, were snuggled up on the sofa watching a film when she received a call from the station to say that a lady from the local CoOp haad called to report an altercation at the store earlier that evening between a young man and a lady customer. On investigation, CCTV confirmed the level of violence involved in the abduction of a young woman. Who are the abductors and what, if any, is their connection to this young woman. As time passes and the police are no nearer to finding these abusive criminals, concern grows for the safety of this young mother. As the police play a cat and mouse game with the abductors who appear to have disappeared, the tension mounts. Tho is a nail biting and truly gripping story which will keep you reading into the early hours. A must read. Very highly recommended.
Another page-turning, edge of the seat crime thriller by MA Comley.
A pleasant family outing, a mother running to the store for snacks for the family movie--a kidnapper with devious plans. When Daz verbally attacks Jaime in the store no one comes to her assistance. He's vile. Even sadder when Jaime is shoved into her car by Daz and his partner again no one comes to her assistance, but fortunately a concerned clerk calls the police.
When DI Kayli Bright answers the call she has no clue that her case has just begun. Who would want to kidnap Jaime? The family isn't rich. No ransom is demanded. What are the kidnapper's plans? And even more important who stands to gain by Jaime being out of the picture?
The case becomes even more complex with another kidnapping. What are the family ties? Who's responsible? And what is Daz's end game?
You'll have to read the book to find out, but if you love crime thrillers you won't be disappointed.
M.A.Comley has once again come up with a page-turner in “Taken”. It is the story of Jaimie Connor who, after a great day out with her family, dashes off to get some crispy treats for a cozy movie at home But she doesn’t return. Her car is missing. There is no trace of her. She been taken. .The case comes up to Kayli Bright and Dave Chapman. They set out on an investigation that brings them to one dead end after another. And yet they persist, up against a diabolical enemy who stops at nothing to achieve his desire.Kayli and Dave put in some sharp sleuthing, but they are up against an enemy who keeps one step ahead of them. Interesting read with a good pace. 4 Stars.
What an intense plot with a twist I never saw coming! When a young mum if two is abducted DI Kayli Bright gives up her day off to begin the investigation. The culprits are clever and crafty and always seem to be one step ahead! Kayli shows pure determination and drive in this story. The back story of the culprits captured me and I found myself pleading with Kayli in certain parts. Sometimes things just aren’t what they seem. The twist .... well it was a jaw dropping moment but I won’t spoil it - read It for yourself - I highly recommend.
A brilliant book with my two best detectives DI Kayli Bright & DS Dave Chaplin. The interaction between these two co workers is fantastic. A young mother goes to the local store to get some groceries for her family. Whilst there she comes across a very unpleasant human being. An altercation arises for which she apologizes even though she wasn’t in the wrong. On leaving the premises she is again accosted by this man and his partner who then kidnap her. Why? What has she ever done to them ? Will Jaime ever be found.? Read this terrific thriller to find out.
We are back with Dl kayli Bright and her team, I’m pleased to say.
This was an unputdownable story. Yes, there is a body but the death was so cruel!
As readers, We get to meet the the murderer, and follow what this person is up to.
It was vicious, nasty, cruel, and I couldn’t understand what had caused this to happen. But Kayli and her partner are determined to find out who did this, and why?
I read all six of M. A. Monkey's DI Kayli Bright Books. I loved the series and I have found a new author that I will continue to read. She has several different series of books and is an excellent writer. From the beginning to the end her books are extremely captivating.
Another brilliant storyline from this amazing author. Why are people being kidnapped and can Kayli and her team save them. Loved the twist at the end. Can’t wait for the next one.
