The Eighteenth

Rate this book
There were 18 names on the kill-list of Walter David Scott during his killing spree of 2009, only 17 of which he was able to cross off. Sarah Prince, the eighteenth name on Walter's list, was able to escape his grasp and orchestrate his capture. Seven years later, her testimony seals Walter’s fate: death by lethal injection. Sarah‘s nightmare is finally over...or so she thinks.

A year after Walter’s execution, a tech genius unveils the Exodus Portal, a virtual reality environment housing a cutting-edge artificial intelligence, meant to give its users a true survival horror experience. Sarah, along with seven other participants, agrees to take part in the first public run of the game, but when the A.I. unexpectedly starts to exhibit the same behaviours as Walter, the group is mysteriously expelled from the Portal.

When members of the trial run start turning up dead in the real world, the group worries a copycat killer has surfaced. Sarah, however, fears something far more sinister: that something familiar has followed them out of the Portal...

Tim Gabrielle

Tim Gabrielle is a married father of three beautiful children living in Tecumseh, Ontario. He spent the first eighteen years of his life in Paeonian Springs, Virginia, hiking and thinking up adventures in his head. Bringing his southern roots with him, Tim moved to Ontario in 2003 where he’s lived with his wife and kids ever since.

Tim has considered himself a writer for years, though for a long time he fell into the trap a lot of writers fall into…talking about writing far more than actually sitting down and churning out pages. It wasn’t until his thirtieth birthday that he started to take his writing seriously and began work on This Land of Monsters.

Tim writes mostly horror/suspense, taking inspiration from the great Stephen King (He floats just like the rest of you). As a child of the nineties, Tim drawls heavily on the slasher/horror movies from that decade, using anything from Scream to the Nightmare on Elm St. movies for inspiration.

My latest indie book review is the sci fi horror The Eighteenth. Sarah Prince is the only survivor of Walter David Scott's killing spree, the last on his list. When she witnesses his execution she believes her ordeal to be over...
First off, don't read at night if you're prone to nightmares or if you're a tad on the squeamish side. This chiller is chock full of moments that positively hollered movie script and reminded me of the likes of Scream, albeit with a more futuristic premise.
The serial killer is a truly terrifying invention and bravo to Gabrielle for the ending I was hoping for. If you're a slasher fan with a twist of virtual reality, you'll love this. Nasty in all the best ways.
A few typos don't prevent this one getting a frightening five stars.

The eighteenth, a book of richly developed characters, is not your typical horror story. I really enjoyed the freshness of this book

Sarah Prince, the eighteenth name on a kill list, survived the killers grasp and helped capture him. A year after the killers execution, she was asked by am old friend to participate in a new virtual reality game that goes wrong.

I am going to stop there with the story description. After reading this book, I feel that it is best to go into this book with as little information as possible and experience it for yourself. If you are looking for a fresh horror story, read this one.

The author took time to develop the story line. I made some predictions while reading the book and one came true. I thought I knew where the story was going but then it changed course.

I loved how strong of a character Sarah was in this book. Her drive and perseverance to survive and help her friends was fantastic. The bond among the friends was tight and helped them survive.

Overall, this book was a real page turner for me.

I could not stop reading this book. It flowed wonderfully, leading one character's arc into another and I loved it. I felt attached to the protagonist and I hated the villain and this, my friends, is how books should go.
Props to the author for this one!

Awesome read and full of fun twists. The story moves at a fast pace and I'm sure you'll have a hard time putting it down. Definitely a book for any horror fan to add to their reading list.

The concept was pretty interesting and didn't quite go as I expected. The premise is admittedly a little farfetched and somewhat hard to believe. Sarah should have been way more traumatized than she was and any normal person who'd been through that wouldn't agree to a virtual reality murder simulation. Also any considerate person wouldn't push her to join it. The various romances were also random and superfluous and sparked at really weird moments. Lastly, the writing lacked any sort of emotional subtext or even any descriptive language, had several typos and repetitive word and structure use, was wordy, and entirely driven by dialogue, so it's not the most engaging read. Still, I found the scifi/paranormal horror/triller plot to be interesting and I wanted to see how it goes, so I read it to the end (the ending wasn't my favorite but I enjoyed the shock value of the final plot twist). It feels a bit like a draft that hasn't yet been reviewed by an editor. With a solid and thorough edit this book could be 4 or 5 stars.

This book had me guessing after the first chapter. I found myself spellbound, unable to put it down until the end. It was a clever mix of suspense, sci-fy, and horror.
I found myself caring for the characters and heartbroken when... well, you'll see.
An excellent and unique book that did things a little different. But different was great. It gave the story a uniqueness that I've never read before.
I will watch for Mr. Gabrielle's next book with great anticipation, having already read his masterful zombie book, 'This Land of Monsters'.
