RAKER 1. noun Remote Armed Kinesthetic Engagement & Reconnaissance android, used primarily by Fire Departments and Police Departments in the United States. RAKERs are deployed for rescue, bomb disposal, and other tasks which are deemed too dangerous for humans. Some models are being manufactured for the armed forces to serve as offensive battlefield weapons.
Christopher A. Gray’s RAKER follows an incident one evening when Dr. Norman Stravinsky sends his RAKER android out to deliver a sensitive file to a colleague. When it encounters a crime in progress, the android must decide whether to interrupt its primary duties as bodyguard to Stravinsky in order to prevent the crime from continuing. The decision results in a confrontation between itself and the Seattle Police Department.
A science fiction short read about an autonomous robot made to protect a very special genius. The robot is the only one of his kind. He stops some dirty cops while he is on an errand. This is the story of the fallout.
Well written. Interesting concept, sentient android as superhero. A pleasant half-hour diversion, this short story is little more than a teaser trailer for a larger story somewhere. But it was good enough that I am inclined to look for the larger story.
Good little short story...wouldnt mind reading the origins of the rakes technology which this book is the fish hook to make you decide to read dark nights...the actual book..maybe one day if I catch it free I will read it
Sorry...I just couldn't help myself! Hah! What can I say? I'm a fan. K....Movin right along...I really dig the hell out of RAKER! The only prob was it's like way to short! Mr Gray I think you may be at the start of something big here. I'll be checking out your other works when I'm done here. I've been finding it difficult to get good A.I Android Cyborg robot books that aren't about an A.I taking over the world or some woman being in love/ravished by an android lookin for a hookup. Sometimes you just want a great action adventure space sci-fi shoot em up blow em up hero/anti-hero machine sentient being who's trying to figure out how why where do I belong in this crazy mixed up world/universe?!? And why the race of beings that created me are so afraid of me when I mean them no harm? Stay tuned....those questions and more will hopefully be answered in the much anticipated RAKER full novels (crossing the fingers) to come. Did I mention I highly recommend this book? Well I do!
RAKER is a free short read that i aquired from the Kobo website. With only 57 pages this was doable in 30 minutes. I decided to pick this one up as it's been a while since i've read short stories. This one was good, but not good enough. This book i believe is a companion to Dark Nights, which while i found this one to be lacking, i will try and read Dark Nights.
The reason why i gave this 2 stars ( I go by the Goodreads star ratings. 2 = It was Ok) was because there wasn't enough of a story. It was as if someone just pulled out a chapter of a book and published just that chapter. Also the synopsis pretty much tells you the ENTIRE story so there really wasn't much point reading the book. However, i didn't read the synopsis before i read this so there was some mystery left.
This was good for a short read, despite the lack of mystery that the book offered. I would recommend that anyone gives this a try, because hell, why not.
This is quite a short novella, but it is an interesting premise to the story, not unlike Asimov's I Robot, but not so close I felt like . Being a novella I felt was a weakness to it, as it didn't allow for too much development in 27 pages. I would be intrigued to see where the author would take this character and develop the world around it into a full book.
There is another book called "Dark Night" which is meant to be almost a prequel/origin novel, which I have yet to read, but have added to read at a later date.
