I am a big fan of time travel stories, so I was eager to check out Addison Albright’s take on the trope. Where this story really stood out for me is on the unique approach to the time travel theme. I have read a lot of time travel books, but this story really takes things in a new and interesting direction, and I was really impressed by the author’s creativity in how things all come together. There isn’t much science to explain how time travel happens, and I had to squint a bit a few times to make it all make total sense. But I found myself really eager to follow along here for most of the book, as I found the storyline quite compelling in terms of what happens to Oscar and how his dads manage to unravel what is going on and how to find him.
Where I struggled here is that while the storyline is creative and engaging, the character and relationship development are almost non-existent. The book opens with a brief scene where we see Leo and Vinnie meet. We then jump to two years later where Leo tells his dad the two are getting married, then there is a six-month jump and another brief scene after the men are already married and have moved across the country. The book then picks up after Oscar is born and is about 15 months old. So basically, we are talking a handful of pages and a few scenes that cover the entire start of Leo and Vinnie’s relationship through the birth of their child.
When Are You? is a fantastic time travel tale that brought about a minor miracle: making sense to a brain that belongs at the back of the class, doodling on a desk as science takes a swift trip through one ear and out the other.
How wonderful it was not being clobbered by concepts I didn’t have a hope in hell of understanding. Instead, I found myself treated to a story that made time travel seem a reasonable proposition, and a tear in the air, as credible as lightning. A feat my utter lack of left brain was convinced could only be pulled off by the twinkle in David Tennant’s eyes.
This is Addison Albright’s first novel-length release since the fabulous To Love and To Cherish, one of my very favourite reads. The trilogy it completes is a brilliant, beautifully written castaway tale in which Addison’s incredible attention to detail and charming characters craft a story as fresh as it is captivating.
Thus, I was thrilled that she was again dipping her toe into waters she excels at. A world away from formulaic; Addison takes a trope and makes it her own with a unique tweak that reinvents a well-worn wheel. It was a delight to discover that in Where Are You? she has done it again...with utmost aplomb.
We are introduced to Leo and Vinnie on the day they meet, an irresistible encounter complete with incorrigible wingmen who all-but frogmarch Leo into Vinnie’s life. I was charmed from the first chapter: a superb introduction to our characters, the spark that flares between them and an insight into what makes them tick.
Although there is romance inherent in the depth of their love, this isn’t a ‘romance’. It’s an enthralling story about an established relationship that explores the boundlessness of unconditional love. Encapsulated by time travel. I loved it.
A good time travel story will coil itself around your brain and squeeze it like a boa-constrictor. If the story doesn't leave you with emotional vertigo, trying to come to terms with the convergence of the present, the past, and the present once again the author missed their mark.
In "When are You," Addison Albright did a wonderful job weaving a story of love, romance, family, mystery, and fighting to keep all those things no matter the odds. The beginning of the tale moves rather quickly to push the plot forward. This is rather helpful in novellas such as this, as it gives the audience more to enjoy the heart of the story. The Pixar movie "UP," did something similar at the beginning of its story.
I liked the imagination behind Albright's story, and while I am ignorant of how peoples may have lived on this continent six or seven thousand years ago, I can imagine they might have lived in much the same way as those in the story.
If you enjoy fantasy and sci-fi adventures, if time travel revs your engine, or you would like to escape for a couple of hours and imagine how others may have lived several thousand years ago, you should give this Lil Novie a try. It was pretty good and I now plan to add this new to me author to my "get mo" list.
When Are You? By author, Addison Albright is a very confusing read for me. I did like the names of the chapters, I thought that was cute and creative. But there are huge time jumps I am not talking about the time travel aspect yet. I will get to that in a minute. But the time jumps from when Vinnie first meets Leo to when they get a child, those made me lose the character connection to Vinnie and Leo. I felt their love story was rushed through to get to what the author really wanted the story to be about. If this book were split into two books, I think the character connection would be better. As it stands, I felt no connection to the characters because I felt they were rushed. I do believe there is a great story here, it just needs to more something I wanna say more emotion, but the end of the book has that, I just wished the beginning matched that. I would say pass on this story. It just was not for me.
Story started out OK for me. I'm not much into time travel and at first I didn't realize that this was the nature of the plot. Two entirely opposites attract, life is good, marriage happens and a successful surrogacy brings Oscar into their world, all is good and fine. Until a portal breach in time opens and takes away from Vinnie and Leo what's the most vital element in their married lives: Oscar. Here is where the reader is taken on a trip in time that holds so many mysterious elements. If the reader likes time travel than this is for you. Honestly, I had a hard time following this new world and can't say it held much interest or fascination for me. This is my honest review for the GRR ARC I received.
this is my first book by this author and I look forward to reading more.
It is a beautiful story of adventure, family and love. Fantastic ending! Thank You for the story.
I will be honest that I wish there had been more detail in the earlier years of Leo and Vinnie's life. It felt rushed and glossed over and felt like we were just skipping through their lives to get up to the time travel although that could help the feeling / vibe for the time travel loop.
This has got to be one of the most fantastic, fascinating, incredible, intense, fast paced, action packed, amazing, grab-you-by-the-feels, nail biting, keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat, unconventional, definitely different, completely unexpected, and totally awesome time travel takes I've read in quite some time. I was hooked from beginning to end, and would recommend getting this ASAP!!!
I haven't read many time traveling story but I really like this one. This is a fast pace story that kept my interest. It's very interesting to see Addison Albright take on the time traveling. This story definitely made me think that time traveling could but possible one day.
I really liked this story. As the name implies, there is time travel which brings to my mind Dr. Who. This story definitely brought some mixed emotions for me, but a better story would be hard to come by.
In this exciting yet sweet novel about military-trained Leo and his artistically gifted partner Vinnie, two men are confronted with the consequences of time travel when their son, Oscar, suddenly vanishes and they figure out he has traveled back in time. The focus of the story is not just on their need to survive what they will face when they go look for him, but equally on the emotional fallout of losing their toddler son if they can’t figure out a way to go after him. It makes for great reading, a wonderful adventure, and some delightful surprises.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
While I’m not a big fan of time travel romances, the majority (and possibly all) of my exposure has been in the M/F romance genre. That said, I am a big fan of Addison Albright’s writing and thought I’d take a chance and dip my toes into M/M time travel romances. While I wasn’t sure what to expect, I am beyond pleased that I decided to give When Are You? a go.
Albright is one of those authors who writes time jumps well and that skill paid off in Leo, Vinnie, and Oscar’s story. The book begins with Leo and Vinnie’s meet-cute, which was so grin-inducing that my face is still sore. Readers are then treated to some of the more significant moments in Leo’s and Vinnie’s – and eventually, Oscar’s – lives. For me, this allowed me to fall in love with and to connect with the characters and care about them in such a way that when Oscar disappeared, I felt Leo and Vinnie’s confusion, horror, devastation, and grief, as well as their determination to get their son back.
Could this story have been longer? Yes, I’m sure Albright could have added more scenes showing how Leo and Vinnie’s relationship developed, the early years of their marriage, them deciding to become parents, and Oscar’s entry into their family. There was plenty for the author to expand upon and turn this into a much-longer book, but the romance between Leo and Vinnie, while pivotal, was not the driving force of the story – at least not to me it wasn’t. I felt the real focus of When Are You? was the length to which two fathers would go to insure their son grow up happy and to keep their family intact. I’m trying very hard not to give out details about the actual story as I feel potential readers should be able to experience Leo and Vinnie’s journey for themselves.
On a final note, I’ll be forthcoming and say I didn’t expect to give this story five stars, largely because I didn’t expect that I would want to re-read it after I knew how their time travel played out, assuming the element of surprise would be gone. However, I’m dying to read it again already to see what clues I may have missed on the first read through, hence the five well-earned stars. Not only did Albright keep me guessing, keep me entertained, and made me a bit weepy eyed, but she also left me wanting to check out more m/m time travel romances.
Please note: My review is of an unedited, pre-release copy of this book and assumes that any errors were corrected prior to publication.
Really enjoyed this fast paced well written book that was just a little different, I met Leo at my art show, he was there with his wingmen who decided we should meet and let's just say it has been a fairytale love story for us since that moment. Together we fell in love, got married, five years later we moved to a small town after a Leo's career change from the military to teaching, because I could do my art anywhere and then started our family with with our son Oscar. Our life was perfect until one day something happened, in a shimmer we lost Oscar and now we will do anything to get him back.
