So a huge Tokyo earthquake has virtually wiped out Tokyo's ability to be the capital of Japan; it also appears to have given some of the survivors blood powers! And it is these people with powers, the 'Deadmen' that the prison is really interested in, and the very last thing that they would want is any of the prisoners or data on what's really going on, leaving the prison. So maybe not such a bright idea to try and stage a mass breakout to cover up getting data out of the prison? OK storytelling and reality building, but an artwork depicting motion is pretty much indecipherable to me! 6 out of 12, Three Star read.

I just recently binged the whole first season of Deadman Wonderland, which sadly doesn't have a second yet, so I decided to get back into the manga.

I read the first three volumes years ago so I looked at Volume 3 first to see exactly where I was concerning the plot. The anime is pretty much a carbon copy, with only a few exceptions. Honestly it kind of felt like I was reading storyboards for the anime.

With that being said ... FUCK YES TO UNCENSORED MANGA. All of the blacked out parts in the anime were SO annoying. I want to see the gore and violence! This manga is messed up and that's why I enjoy it. One example, the story of was told the same in both the anime and this volume, with one huge difference:

Like I said: messed up.

The end of this volume coincides with the end of the anime series (unless they ever get around to making it some day) but at least there are a lot more books to read.

Four stars because I really do find the story intriguing, but I did have a major problem with Scar Chain's plan.

But it's still a fun read that I want to continue with the next volume.

I hope that Ganta soaks in the feeling of being an asshole for not noticing something that was so obvious now that the truth's been directly thrown at him. Even Karako was getting annoyed at how hard he was trying to pin the blame on Shiro as if he didn't complain enough times already. Now Shiro is hurt and lonely...

~3.5-4/5

I keep saying this, but everyone is psychotic in this series. Pretty much everyone. And every time we meet a new characters, it’s likely they’re also psychotic.

We met a few new characters at the end of the last volume, and in this one we meet their gang, just before their plan to expose Wonderland takes off. And, of course, this includes some deaths and psychotic people.

I don’t know why it’s still surprising me how horrific this series is. The deaths are not hidden from the viewer, or downplayed. They’re horrible. I should be more cynical about it at this point, shouldn’t I?

Anyway, they’re horrible. The characters learn more horrors of Deadman Wonderland, but nothing is really revealed to the outside. Two of the new characters have a story I’m at least a little intrigued by. Ganta, though, has a fight with Shiro, and I feel bad for her. He's kind of a jerk, even if he does have his reason. The betrayal from the last volume has been replaced by me just feeling bad for and wary of her. Because there’s more to what’s going on with her than I think even she knows. And I don’t like it.

I just like Shiro, and I want her to be happy.

The cliffhanger is a bit bad. I’m excited to see what happens next.

Still weird. And fan-service-y. Threads of a plot are keeping me going but I may not continue after I finish the volumes I own.

This volume was all over but In true deadman wonderland fashion emotions were high and all over. Ganta had his hopes up because for a while there was a revolution and it looked like they were all gonna get out of the prison but naturally that was foiled while the plan was in progress making for several deaths. At the end though I was pretty sad just because of how Shiro and Ganta ended things. Shiro was obviously just trying to help and neither of them knew the extent of why the chip was so important but Shiro was in the right and Ganta definitely owes her an apology. Just her eating cookies alone and crying at the end really pulled on me. But I do love this series characters world and everything about it.

This one was interesting, but not a whole lot actually happened over the course of the book. They attempted their big plan and nothing much happened. And absolutely nothing changed. Still interested to continue with the next book!

The main plot kicks in with Deadman Wonderland Volume 4 as Ganta joins the Scar rebel team to fight the prison system. I have to appreciate that in American dystopian books, the government leaders are just evil. In Japanese dystopian, they are absolutely insane - and that makes them much more unpredicatable. In Deadman Wonderland, it's almost becoming a adventure to figure out which person is going to change sides (from good to evil or evil to good).

Story: Ganta meets up with the Rebels. Their mission: to get valuable evidence to a government official that the prison is abusing and killing the inmates. The rebel leader, Owl, has gathered a team, each with unique powers and hopes, to achieve the task. But an inside man in the group is going to make the possibilities of success less likely by the moment.

The torture, violence, and body count remains high: this is much closer to Battle Royale than it is to Get Backers or Flame of Recca in spite (or despite) the cartoony feel. And often it pushes close to my tolerance ability. But the smooth illustrations and interesting story keep me reading beyond the gratuitous gore and tween boy fan service. The mystery of the Egg, the Deadmen, the devastated dystopian Tokyo, and the Disney freakishness of the Wonderland keep me glued every volume.

A nice change in this volume from previous is that we've gone past the 'monster of the week' battles and it's more a constant good vs evil "Bleach" type actioner. The host of characters is getting bigger and the ante is upped smoothly. In all, I'm ready for Volume 5!

Oh Rokurou, you bastard, how could you? Be another example of that you better don't trust anybody in this mad world called Deadman Wonderland.
I just love how the story is progressing, even if you definitely shouldn't get attached to any of the characters, because you never know when and how quickly you have to say goodbye to them.
The little girl, Hibana, is sooo crazy and twisted.
I loved the moment when Nagi turns on the elevator - his expression at that exact point was just too awesome. But poor, poor boy now, being pumped with drugs by Genkaku and forced to join the Undertakers.
Also, poor Shiro, trying to save his friend's life, but getting nothing for that but a hit in her face. I'm sure Ganta will regret doing that very, very much once he finds out what she had done.

What the bloddy hell Rokuro??? Again nothing new cause of anime... Shiro and grandpa confuse me though. And Shiro calls Gantas mom Mom so are they siblings? Or was she just raised by his mom? Much more mystery than the anime

Back on this again. Deadman Wonderland remains a decent break from more taxing literature, given that you’ll always be assured of some grimly violent fighting and some embarrassed-teen interchanges in ready supply.

This volume provides a little more backstory, as well as offering a pretty action-packed mission. That the mission ends… badly… is probably to be expected given how early in the run we are. But still, there’s a good sense of high stakes. Betrayal and subterfuge make an appearance, and of course this causes a wedge between some of our characters.

Pretty standard, no?

What intrigued me was that this volume also saw members of the prison staff become suspicious of what’s going on in the establishment. While not a lot actually happened in this regard, there’s a good amount of groundwork laid for future management/staff throw downs. Additionally, more was conveyed of the Undertakers and their role in controlling the inmates. Turns out it’s not just about wicked guitar solos, which is a bit of a bummer.

Compared to the animated adaptation of the work, the manga is certainly more explicit. The violence is pretty keenly observed, and it verges on the squicky given that everyone involved seems to be a teenager. I dunno, maybe if you’re into kids being dissolved by acid, this isn’t such a thing for you.

That said, it’s fitting for the story – this is something that takes place in a human testing facility designed to look like a prison which also runs popular games that kill off most of their contestants – so I can’t carp too much.

A slightly lower score for this collection as it didn’t really provide me with much of a sense of forward momentum. I guess I should get used to it – with so many volumes to go, I reckon it’ll be a while before stuff starts to whip along.

What is even going on? There are apparently 2 groups, the scar chain and the undertakers. The undertakers don't want the scar chain team to escape from deadman wonderland. The deadmen are of course tired of being experimented on and try their best to pull an escape plan but it fails drastically. Luckily for them, Shiro saves a lot of lives as she has some sort of premonition that a member of scar chain would betray them. I love her yet Ganta is pissed at what she does when she destroys a chip filled with evidence against deadman wonderland that is ultimately pointed out to have been rigged to explode. There are so many new characters introduced and it's hard for me to relate or empathise with any of them because they are not given much personality and even their names are confusing.

Very basic yet still creepy. There is this guy called Nagi who had his vocal chords removed yet can still somehow speak. Not sure if that's an error or something that has yet to be explained. I just hope that this story gets better in the next few volumes because I am soon going to drop it if it doesn't. This volume was at least useful in explaining how a person becomes a deadman to begin with. There is apparently this worm that gives you abilities to manipulate and toy around with your own blood. The undertakers seem to have some sort of insect spray to nullify the powers that being a deadman comes along with. I absolutely love the few coloured pages at the start of each volume. They would make great posters. I am still confused and was hoping that the inspection would shut down the huge science lab.

Prison escape stories are always fun to read and one just has to ponder the kind of security measures that Tamaki needs to keep several hundred people with the ability to turn their blood into powerful weapons inside of a hidden basement of his prison. Ganta is starting to come to terms with his somewhat more comfortable living conditions of Sector G and the peculiar Deadmen inmates that have taken a liking to him. It doesn't take long before the mentally unstable Nagi wants to recruit him to join Scar Chain and flee the prison with the purpose to expose the human trafficking and
massive manslaughter of inmates that are serving terms for lesser crimes in the hopes of closing the prison once and for all.

Tamaki knows about Nagi's plans and has a traitor in his ranks that will ruin Nagi's plans.

I like Nagi's damaged and faulty character that was pushed to the edge after living through some particularly cruel atrocities that are revealed in this volume. Ganta seems reluctant to join his group because he believes Nagi is overzealously idealistic but a promise he made to his odd friend Shiro to ride the ferris wheel together convinces him to follow suit.

The group is faced with huge hurdles with deadly consequences but its Tamaki's prized undertaker prison guards that make this volume borderline ridiculous. I am sorry, but what kind of 6 year old girl can wield a 100 pound electronic sword that is 6 feet long like a pro?

The manga tries to go for shock value without respecting logic. I also scratch my head when the final battle with the undertakers takes place in an apparent part of Sector G that is just beneath the surface. I think I need a blueprint of the prison. The artwork like always is great and despite my gripes with the unrealism of the plot, I'm truly enjoying where the story is heading.
