Okay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.

I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.

There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.

Thank you for checking out my stories!

I really liked the concept of this book, but I felt the execution was kind of lacking. The MC spent the first 2/3 of the book making stupid, headstrong decisions and dealing with the fallout. Yes, she was a teenager, but the first 2/3 just dragged on with questionable decision after questionable decision. The last third exploded with action, resolving many of the plot elements while still leaving something for sequels. I was pretty happy with the ending..just not so happy with the lead up to the climax. I have and do enjoy many of Martha Carr's works, as well as Michael Anderle's work.

I will purchase and read at lest the next novel in this seeting and decide from there whether I want to invest more in this storyline.

What a spunky dragon!

This book was lots of fun to read. I particularly enjoyed the battering of the dragon trainer. Good characters, good setting, great storyline ... just a wonderful way to spend a few hours escaping to somewhere else.

Dragony goodness

Enjoyed this a lot even though it’s aimed at a younger audience. I enjoyed watching Raven and Leander squabble as they worked on their bond, plus William was a good friend. Bella Chase however was a vindictive girl who I hope either has a reckoning moment where she realises her actions are selfish and mean spirited and she amends her ways, or she goes full on nemesis and gets her just desserts... I’m leaning more towards the later.

I liked the slow weaving in of the grandfather’s backstory and his relationship with Headmaster Flynn. A lot of potential there. Definitely going to be picking up the next book to see where they go.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book.

I'd bought the series a while back, so had forgotten why - apart from the obvious, that it had Dragons in it! Lol

But, once I'd warmed up to it, over the first few pages, it grabbed my attention, and ran with it, right up to the ending of the Authors' Notes! Lol

This, I feel, was aimed at a YA audience but, as I've discovered, since I first started reading all of the LMBPN books I can afford to buy, age is just a number and, at almost 63, I still thoroughly enjoy any good yarn, no matter which age it's aimed at!

I laughed to myself, as I wrote that last sentence as, calling this story a yarn, was also harking back to my habit of often crocheting away at something, as I read - well, when my hands let me, anyway! Lol

Anyhoo, I loved this story, and very much look forward to reading book two: 'Warmage: Unrestrained', just as soon as I finish this review!

This is very much a growing up, and finding the other half of yourself, type of story, and I absolutely loved it when Raven Alby's BFF, Henry Derks, brought a Toad to Fowlers Academy, as his Familiar, on their first year of Magic school.

I loved that he is very happy to have such a simple creature for his Familiar, which shows just how centered he is, both to himself, and to his Magic, which is just as well, as Raven is all over the place, until she partners with a Red Dragon, called Leander.

It's at this point, that everything in her life changes!

So, to find out more, I'm off now, to read Book Two, and I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know all about it!

I have a mixed reaction to the first novel in this series. The positives are that it has a good story line and characters. The story covers Raven Alby's introduction to school as a mage in need of a familiar to assist with enhancing spell casting abilities, her home life and friendships. There is marginal depth and development in these areas. It is good enough to keep the reader engaged and the story moving along - but a lot of the reading feels like an author writing more words because of a contractual obligation rather than to tell a story.

The plot becomes repetitive and predictable. Quite repetitive. There are, however, nuggets that shine through and are enjoyable to read. It stimulates some mental imagery but is rare and short lived in the prose.

The reason for the observation of filling words for a contract is that the ending of the book just trails off with no resolution to any conflict within the story except for one, and that conflict is almost like the authors got tired of their repetition too, so the relationship magically changes.

Unfortunately it is a good story which is unfinished and rough. The writing is good enough in concept, but it is no where near polished.

Many younger readers will enjoy the book and the novels to come, I'm sure; however, there are other YA/dragon rider/coming of age magic novels out there to read before continuing on with this series.

Really repetitive and slow start.

I got a little worried at the start of the book because she had a few characters doing something dumb solely to push the plot. That's just hard to read in fantasy. Dumb people don't survive the horror movie of fantasy. Therefore having repeated characters doing something dumb when they are supposed to be knowledgeable characters is VERY annoying to read.

It's hard for me to say no to a story with a dragon in it. Even if it's not the center of attention in the story. This book slowly pays that off. At the same time, its pacing is very 1999 in the way they use to write fantasy stories. Not a bad thing but not something I would take a chance on in case it was bad. Since there's almost no payoff in the first two hours of reading the book.

this first book gives me a harry potter vibe but if all of them were from the wizarding world. Instead of Harry and Hermione being muggle raised.

Personally, speaking I think this book is a 3 maybe. I bump it to a 4 because I am not the target audience. The dragging is REALLY bad. You beg for something to happen and not just random stuff to other people. The main character spends so long outside the center of the action potion of the tale at the start that this would be a Dnf if it wasn't an audiobook.

First of all, I enjoyed reading this story and am simply late in submitting this review. The general sense I had while reading this book was that it is a story about teenagers for teenagers or pre-teens. It's fun and wholesome; and, quite honestly, I'm finding it harder and harder to find books that aren't filled with age inappropriate content. I often look for books in the fantasy genre particularly books with magic and that include dragons as lead characters. So, this book is right up that alley. I must add that there was a lot of repetition in some areas that was somewhat annoying but I tried to take that as part of the delivery to an intended younger audience. I could be wrong. The story is engaging enough to keep me reading the rest of the series and I am currently reading the 6th book in the series. Each book is a mini-adventure wrapped up with each book with a larger story line tying all of the books in the series together. The books beyond the first book do get heavier or perhaps more appropriate for slightly older teens. Overall I enjoyed the premise of the story and have enjoyed getting to know the characters.

To be honest I'm not too sure what to say about this book. I loved the premise, a powerful girl who bonds and trains a dragon! What's more awesome than that? But the way the story unfolded was not the best for me. I feel like they left things out and we would only discover something happened when she brought it up later in the book and I'm left sitting there thinking I missed reading something. But then one day in the book takes like 5 or 6 chapters, so it's confusing how the book could be so detailed yet not include important things.

Also I think this is more just my taste is changing the older I get but the heroine was annoying. I have always enjoyed a good YA book but lately all the characters I read are so annoying. She is so stubborn and doesn't listen at all even though they told her a million times and she's gotten hurt multiple times over and over again. Maybe I should now just stick to older less obnoxious and prideful characters lol. I don't think I'll be continuing the series.

Suspenseful and interesting
Henry is a character. He has rather funny goals for his new school year. William trains dragons. He genuinely cares for each of them. Raven is a mage in training. Her family has a reputation for the best mages in her town. She wants to be more than just a mage. Overall, she makes friends fast. Bella has decided that she has to beat Raven at everything even if she has to cheat to do it or break some rules. Mostly, the competition is one sided since Raven is more interested in training a dragon. This book pulled me in right from the very beginning. Once I started it, it was hard for me to put it down and I read it in every free moment I had. I recommend this book to those who enjoy books with magic and dragons. The teens seem pretty focused overall and dependable.

Added this book to my select list of books with dragons: https://fantasybooksland.com/list-of-...

It's a fun story, with a typical stubborn teenage girl, called Raven.

Raven finds out that her mother was a war mage that rode dragons, and that sparks her interest in pursuing a similar career. To make progress at the Fowler Academy where she is studying, Raven needs a Familiar, and for that, she adopts a dragon called Leander.

Her neighbor gives it to her as he couldn't succeed in training it. The funny part is that Leander is stubborn as Raven is. Therefore, she will have a hard time dealing with this red dragon until they will finally understand each other and form a team that will solve a series of strange disappearances.

How do you guys keep doing this? Awesome book! More like read all day read all night!

I don't understand how you two keep doing this. I have read a s**t ton of both your books and have never had to say on book 5, this sucks. I just keep reading book after book of you both and the fine co-writers you work with. I'm disabled and have always read a lot. 2 years ago I started reading Mikes and Martha's books. I have been full ever since. Read the books! I have sent out so many suggestions to friends and about 20% read what I'm reading. Take the time to read and rate this book!!! It's worth your time!

When you find a good book with compelling characters, solid world building and satisfying plot conflicts with payoffs then of course you want it to last as long as possible. And for a youth adult reader I think this book could be all of those things.

However as an adult I felt the resolution of "will she or won't she" was never in doubt and so found it frustrating that authors chose to drag it out to the end. I've dropped another Micheal Anderele series for the same reason: although the foray into the universe was fun at first it just felt like things were intentionally paced to yield more books at the expense rather than to the benefit of the reader.

Enjoyable read

I would categorize this as YA except for the language....it's not a lot, but I suspect some parents might not like what is in there. That said, the book was well written with engaging characters. Clear conflict and resolution, with room for future conflict (so, pretty stereotypical for a YA series).

The dragonrider relationship and the magical system seemed well thought out and made sense. When it did have action, it was well written. I suspect future entries in the series will be more action-packed....but time will tell. I'm definitely planning on reading the next book in the series. Fun times!

Definitely this was an enjoyable read. The characters are well defined, even to the point of showing too much stubbornness - certainly enough to make her less appealing as the protagonist. She has a never say die attitude, which is required considering the blindness with which she takes some of her directions. In spite of that the authors did a great job of connecting the characters with the animals. The blindness by many adults to disappearances is extremely off-putting.

Certainly this book is worth a read if you enjoy magic and dragons.

Fantastic Reading!

I saw this book and just had to get it
1. Because it is a story about a Red Dragon
2. Because it has a great cover of a Red Dragon
3. Seriously though it is a great story about a girl and her Red Dragon.. I read this in one sitting as I just couldn't put it down, plus
I can't wait for the next book to be released!
Give it a go and you won't be disappointed!

Aawwww!! Where is book 2

When I first started this book, I almost quit and return it. I am so glad I didn't. At first it seemed a little to juvenile but knowing the authors I decided to continue reading. Now that I've finished I fantasize getting the next one! So when will it be out? Seriously putting a damper on my night (3:26 am). When I find a book that grabs me like this one, I WANT MORE NOW!

Read this book!

Seriously. If you don't she might not write the next one and I really want to know how this future saga continues. I think I'm in love with Leander (I really didn't like the original Leander though it's been so long since I read the story that I forget why). Anyway, who wouldn't love a talking dragon? A friendly one anyway...who breaks out of prison to rescue you from your nemesis....

WarMage: Unexpected

I began reading this book because all the other authors I enjoy reading have not published their next books in their series. At first, it was curiosity that drove me to see what it was about. The first few chapter (under 10) were slightly disorienting and then everything started to come together. I've started the 2nd book and am now hooked on another series. Thank you!

Martha and Michael on form

I may have overdosed on the space opera and fantasy books by these authors in lockdown and started seeing other authors. This book looked a bit different so I thought i would give it a go and it has got me hooked again. thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in book 2, I highly recommend, just make sure you got nothing else planned for the day.

Excellent beginning of series!!

I really liked this book,it was a little slow at the beginning but it also showed just how stubborn and determined Raven was.... She comes from a long line of mages and wants to be more than just a mage, she wants to be a war mage that rides her Dragon Leander... And goes to work till she accomplished it... Amazing start and I can't wait to start the next book in this series!!!

Wow!

This is the best books about magic and coming into their own I have read since the Harry Potter books, and Dragon Riders of Pern. The characters bond and confidence grow, and the challenges are both entertaining and imaginative. I think Carr and Anderle show the readers thru this medium and the author's notes that all things are possible if you do the work, and believe.
Enjoy!

There were a lot of good parts to this book. I like the world building. I like that Raven is an accomplished fighter. Her grandfather is awesome.

I got frustrated with Raven halfway through the book. She listened to literally nothing anyone said to her, even when it was good advice on how to succeed with Leander. As the first book in the series, I'm sure there is more clarification later on skills that were mentioned in passing.

Dragons, Mages Awesome

What could be better? Dragons and Mages both make me happy. I have been looking forward to this and I was not disappointed, read it in one day, even though it's a larger book. Characters are well written and the dialogue from the Dragon is inspired. Desperate for the next one.

A great adventure

Martha and Michael have done it again. I loved this book and cannot wait for the next. Leander is a blast and I really enjoyed the way he and Raven learn to trust each other and form a bond. I like that they train with both magic and weapons. Can not wait to see how the adventure continues.

Action Packed Coming of Age Story

Raven goes through her becoming a war mage through training a dragon (like busting the most intelligent bronco ever until she learns the right way). She also starts magic school while starting to solve a string of disappearances and finds out hidden infomation at every turn.

Definitely a page turner. Eagerly awaiting the next book!

Loved it!

This book has character (and characters) in spades. I loved the dynamics among the main cast, and chortled when Raven. the stubborn and curious MC, met Leander, the match to her stubbornness. By the time these two learned to work together, I felt as though I’d conquered their hurdles right along with them.

Wow

Raven is a mage in training start at the Academy for the first time. Her best friend Henry was going to so they walk together every day of class. She loves dragons and decides that a dragon will be her familiar. People tell her it can’t be done but you don’t tell her things like that.

Yet another 5 star rating

If you’re tired of seeing this rating for Martha and Michael’s books, too bad And if you choose to pass them by, it’s your loss. A great story about a young girl with her desire for greatness, who meets an angry stubborn dragon. And how they teach each other how to become a team. A great read.

I like this new series

There I was... completely burned out by alien flora, gaming series gone wild and all the other stuff that's been coming my way. I missed that good old fashioned book with characters that were more like BA and Katie. This was a younger version but it just worked for me. It sure helped fill a little of that time while in isolation! Very, very nicely!
