An imperfect hero for an imperfect time. For generations, the Riker men have been the best of the best. For the Battleborn that comes with a cost.

I had to give the other guy credit. That was a fine right hook. Every bit as good as my mom used to give me. Of course, the best right hooks were the ones I landed on the other guy rather than the ones the other guy landed on me. My dear departed mother had always taught me it was better to give than receive. It’s unlikely that her cherished advice was meant to apply to bar fights, but then, she wasn’t a big fan of bars or fights in general. I spit out the blood in my mouth.
My name is Tad Riker. I serve as a tactical weapons officer for the Wolves, but I was raised by the Stallions. The poor unfortunate reprobate, who was even now feeling the wrath of my fist, was serving as an armorer for the Stallions. That’s why I took this fight so personally . . . not that he was an armorer, but that he was a Stallion.
I am a geek with a passion for God [I am a fulltime Presbyterian Pastor/Retired computer programmer.]
I'm an unrepentant technologist with over 25 years in the "Information Technology" field -much of it as a Senior Manager of Research and Development.
I have a wonderful wife named Lori, and two fantastic daughters... CJ and Jackie. CJ is ten years the elder and is in college (Muskingum University, New Concord Ohio).
All four of us love Science Fiction, Scuba Diving and good food. Lori and the girls share a passion for music and the piano - regrettably I have absolutely no skills in this area. I do have a passion for Notre Dame and Green Bay Packer Football.
About my writing...
My current passion is a pure Science Fiction series following the adventures of a future "Horatio Hornblower" style character called "Admiral Catherine Kimbridge". I have also co-authored a fantasy series with my eldest daughter (CJ) called "The Ways of Mages"
PLEASE NOTE: All of the proceeds from the first book in each series goes to funding food banks and homeless ministries... So enjoy an inexpensive read and know that you are helping someone else in the process!
I liked this book, because the characters were believable and the action was great. I would recommend it to all sci-fi readers, but also to others. It's a true redemptive story of a drunk military man that grabbed me and made me want to keep reading to see the outcome.
Not just another phoned in military sci fi story, this took some thought, some background and comic relief that made it real page turner. No spoilers here so get the book and see theres more good stuff to come
“We’re the Honor Brigade. We fight for Queen and slave.”
Another fantastic start to a series in this world. I loved the last book I read (in the follow-on series to this one), and I know I'm going to love these ones.
Great, great fast paced adventure. Weird point but the books structure is fantastic and something. Lot of writers miss the space ship on. Looking forward to BB book 2.
This is a pretty good swashbuckling sci-fi space opera, which links back to the author's previous series dealing with the same family but five hundred years later. The edition I have includes the prequel short story that Goodreads shows as a separate book so this review covers both.
I can't say it covers any new ground in the genre, but if you're a fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, or older written space opera you may well find it your cup of tea. the lead character is especially engaging and is far from the perfect hero at the start, but goes through something of a transformation throughout the book.
I liked it, it filled the time enough to make me buy the two other volumes.
The characters were very believable, the dialogue was too. I really enjoyed the humor also. I would definitely recommend it to others as an enjoyable read.
Narration was good; although range was not a wide of some that I have heard.
The story itself is also pretty good; if a tad on the short side. The fidelity to military concepts and culture was rock solid, but that also means the potential for over the top action was limited (which is strange to say, because I don't usually go for that, but this story was so true to form that at times it was completely predicatable ... which is totally what you want on a battlefield, but doesn't always create the conflict you need in a good story). Still, it is absolutely worth a listen.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. #feeaudiobookcodes #audiobookboom
