To be honest when I first started reading this book, I was like, uh WHAT, I'm not liking it at all. Once I calmed down, because hey, let's face it I have NEVER been disappointed by Clarissa Wild's books, I was like ok, I get it. I'm sure everyone is looking at this review going what the heck is she talking about, but it might just be ME, because it book rocks. Clarissa never disappoints. I have been through a lot of emotions reading it but now I'm like bring it on for book 2. I'm not sure how I feel about Noah at this point, I'm afraid he's going to throw me for a loop before it's over with. Anyway moving on, read this book, I loved it and cannot recommend it enough
I never realized how scary the darkness could be if you’re surrounded by it against your will. My body lies frozen on the cold, hard floor, my clattering teeth the only sound I hear for hours. I don’t know where I am. Or how I came here. All I remember is him. The man with a smile so cumbersome it made mine disappear. Crack. Crack. I lift my head. The door squeaks, and the lock unhinges. When daylight breaks through, a sliver of it blinds me, so I cover my eyes. The sun is so bright compared to the shadows I’ve lived in for hours on end. “Wh-who’s there?” My voice breaks when I speak. My throat is so dry I can barely utter the words. I try to peek into the light where a tall figure stands, clutching the doorway. I swallow away the lump in my throat. What are they going to do with me? Is it a man or a woman? Alone or with many? So many questions … and zero answers. Someone steps forward, and I instinctively crawl away, fearing them. That’s what this place does to you. No matter how much time you spend in the darkness, it always manages to turn you into an animal. Raw. Rudimentary. “Hello, Natalie.” It’s a man, his voice dark and low, as though to command respect. How does he know my name? “Who are you?” I ask. “That’s not important right now. What’s important for you to know is that I want you to stay strong and survive.” What is this? “Survive what?” I mutter. “Please … let me out.” The man stands there watching me for what feels like minutes, though I’m sure it’s only a few seconds. The lack of light is causing my brain to play tricks on me. I’ve lost all awareness of time. They want me to lose my mind. “Please …” I beg again, but the figure ignores me and turns around. As he walks back to the door, he pauses for a moment. “Submit … and it’ll be over quickly.” Submit? To what? This is insane. I crawl across the floor as fast as I can, toward the door, toward freedom. But when I get close, it’s slammed shut right in front of me. “No,” I whimper, my voice escaping me. My forehead lowers to the cold, concrete floor while tears travel down my face. If only I hadn’t seen his name in the newspaper. If only I hadn’t been so curious and gone to see him speak. If only he hadn’t laid his eyes on me. Layers and layers of secrets are hidden behind those eyes. Secrets I shouldn’t want or need to know. But I did. And now I’m here. Stuck in perpetuating darkness, surrounded by nothing but concrete walls and floors. Caught by the devil. Taken by his henchmen. Just to become … his.
Well, I’m pleased to say that I actually really got into this one! As you know, I have been having troubles getting into my reads lately due to this pandemic. This story though, kept me on my toes!
It’s a darker theme and full of suspense and mystery. The setting mainly takes place in a cult where the heroine is kidnapped and taken by one of the “patriarchs” of the cult. He wants her really bad and will go to any lengths to make her his! The thing is.. there is way more going on and we end up getting reveals as the story progresses!
This is a part of a duet. I always wait to read duets or trilogies until all the books are out as I don’t like cliffhangers!!! I am happy to report that the second and final book is already out!! So, yes the first book ends with a cliffy but no worries because you can move to the conclusion right away!!
I’m not exactly sure where to start with this one. It’s different from Clarissa Wild’s previous works. It’s delicious, dangerous and troubling – and definitely its own brand of unique. It’s controversial and in all honesty my mind is still reeling to come to grips with what it just read. And yet I wouldn’t classify this one as dark but more as grey romance.
UNDER HIS RULE is the tale of stubborn, strong-willed Natalie and enigmatic, dominant Noah, set in a world – a cult, if you will – where men rule and women have no say. A free-thinking spirit, Natalie is having huge troubles adjusting to what is asked of her – and not in a pleading manner …
This book unnerved me, made me anxious and uncomfortable at how real it all felt. Can you imagine to fight alone against one whole community …?
There’s so much more I’d like to say about this insanely good world building, the storyline and its characters, but almost everything could be considered a spoiler. I’ll tell you this much though: It ends on a nasty AF cliffhanger that had me swearing like a sailor and demanding book two right this second!
First and foremost, I have always loved CW books since the first one I read years ago and that has not changed. But going into this book I was actually not in the mood to read a dark romance. When an author can draw you into their world on the very first page this shows the true worth of a great writer.
I was absolutely consumed by this book. When I was reading I couldn't put it down, when I wasn't reading I was thinking about the next time I could pick it up. This book was nothing like I expected and yes I expected it to be fantastic but it was just so much more. Will it take top spot in my fave Clarissa Wild book? I'm thinking once I get my hands on book 2 they very may well have a chance of sliding into that coveted spot.
As you can see I haven't actually discussed the story line at all in my review and the reason is, is that you don't need to know any of that you just need to jump on in and enjoy the ride!!
I cannot wait to see what else is in store for Natalie, Noah and the Family.
You won't find boy meets girl then they run to the altar and make babies...
Thank goodness for dark romance!
Call me twisted. Call me weird. Call me whatever you want, but this read was everything I look for in this genre.
Finding love in real life isn't always a bed of roses. Sometimes people end up with an unlikely person in an unlikely situation. So, why should fiction be any different? I'm SO glad Clarissa Wild understands this.
Getting a book by an author I'm not familiar with is risky, but in this case I got darn lucky. This won't be my last read by Wild.
The love scenes left nothing to the imagination. (not something I'm crazy about). But this isn't 99 cent smut. This book told a real story and contained a plot. It wasn't a 15 page rip off to get readers to buy the next 15 books in a series only to force them to wait six months between releases.
However, I must add, that some of the language didn't appeal to me. The F bomb was abundantly used and another word I despise too, but like I said, this ain't a sweet romance.
The author hooked the reader with a juicy mystery. Natalie sees on online article with a picture of a man who should be familiar to her...but not as familiar as the tattoo on his hand. His body art matches a symbol on a scarf that Natalie, now a woman, has had since early childhood. Natalie was raised in an orphanage and her only memories of her mother came in bits and pieces.
Natalie decided to seek out the tattooed man. Unfortunately, this ambition lead her straight into a dangerous situation...a prison...a creepy cult called 'The Family'.
Ohhh, this reminded me of a real life Jim Jones cult...'The People's Temple'. Creepy, indeed.
Natalie doesn't know the specifics, but the mysterious tattooed man was the ultimate alpha with designs on her. Unbeknownst to Natalie, she belonged to him and he'll stop at nothing to have her.
Natalie was every feminist's dream of a character. She's strong, brash and much too brave for her own good. At times she was a bit of a brat, actually. But when you're forced into The Family with its rigid rules and ruthless punishments, I suppose those qualities can be a positive if they don't land you in a concrete cell.
There's hate, hurt, sexual tension and suspense. There's an alpha who always gets what he wants and despite the book's cliffhanger ending, there's no doubt he'll get it. No matter how many books Wild has to write to satisfy the reader, I'm certain we'll get our answers and plenty of thrills along the way.
I just have one request: Please DON'T make this a five book series!!!
There were so many more things I'd love to share about this story, but I don't want to spoil it. Do I recommend it? YES. Will I anxiously be awaiting the next installment? YES!!!!!
My rating is an Extra Shot of Espresso = FOUR STARS
“Caught by the devil. Taken by his henchmen. Just to become … his.”
Prior to this read I’ve experienced two of Wild’s books......both were as opposite rating wise as they could possibly be, so I didn’t know how to feel going into this new duet. The last book I read by her (Cruel Boy) was a 5 star and one of my fav reads of last year. A Debt Owed was such a complete snooze-fest that I didn’t even read the second book. So where would this one fall on the Clarissa spectrum? I was about to find out.....
Well, I’m frustrated...... I LOVED Cruel Boy so much I really had high hopes I would love this one too. Instead, it transported me back to the feelings I felt after reading A Debt Owed. Maybe I am made to only love bully reads by her, which is more than fine but makes me sad because I feel like I’m missing out on the whole other side of hers. I can’t say it was boring....the exact opposite actually, it was too much without any clear direction or purpose. The premise was there, a little too Handmaid’s Tale but there nonetheless, but it felt more cult suspense and less dark romance. And the heroine........I just couldn’t.
Overall Story/Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Story Pace/Speed: ⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Noah: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Natalie: ⭐️⭐️ Steamy Scale:🔥🔥 WTF is going on Scale: 😳😳😳😳😳
Book Facts: Told in: Dual POV, present day. About: In the first installment of the His Duet, this dark romance suspense is set in a polygamous religious community and features powerful Patriarch Noah and “captured” (or outsider) Natalie. She went seeking answers she knew he could give her....she didn’t realize he was also seeking something, her. Now she’s trapped in a community of people that are nothing like her with beliefs that are ridiculous to her. Her only way to survive is to submit and he won’t stop until she’s fully his. But when she starts to receive the answers she so desperately searched for, she realizes running is the only option.....especially now that even more is on the line. Safe Read? There are some elements that might be triggering to some. This is set in a polygamous cult-type community where most women are raised to want nothing more than be a good wife & mother and where sexual activities are often done in front of the community. Ends in: A major cliffy, with a small sneak of the second book in the back.
My Thoughts: I wanted to like this and there were elements of it that I actually did. I liked the premise of it and the potential of where this story and couple could go. I liked some of the twists and how everything seemed to be tying together. And strangely, there were things I liked about Noah which was a little odd considering his “beliefs” but with a heroine like Natalie it was easier to side with him.
I think this book lost me first when it came to Natalie. While I admired her defiance in conforming, it infuriated me how she treated those around her that knew nothing else. It didn’t make her appealing nor would it make the outside world appealing to these people bc she is so judgmental and hateful.....ignorant as well. She refuses to even understand what their community is about or give Noah even a little trust. She refuses to recognize that Noah treats her completely different than how everyone else is, there is no doubt that he has true adoration for her and she fights him at every corner yet gives in anytime sex is in the equation. I felt frustrated for him.
But more than any other issue I had, I had the greatest one with this feeling like a romance. It lacked that connection between the two that was necessary to make it less suspense/drama and more romance/love story. The entire book would have benefitted greatly if we had gotten some kind of flashback that truly set up the love/connection but we don’t. It just lacked.
My Verdict: Honestly, I have already downloaded book 2 to my Kindle.....it’s not because I loved this story but because I need to see if the conclusion is really exactly as I have predicted early on or if it really is this shocking ending as every reader so far as raved about. I can’t really recommend it or tell anyone to run in the other direction until I get a little more....so check back with me after I read Beyond His Control.
“It’s your choice, Natalie. Submit … or be conquered.”
Definitely slightly different from this author’s norm. The storyline is unique and a little troubling. My mind is a bit befuddled regarding this book. I’m not sure how I feel about the subject matter. Part of me was yelling at my kindle - part of me was hoping the story would end how I wanted. The storyline is unique - a little troubling as well. The writing is well written and I love that it is free from edits which is become it rarer these days but Clarissa’s books are always in good form. This storyline is about a place in the world where men rule - a cult if you will. The woman are told what to do, and they do it, no questions asked. Noah wants Natalie has a mind of her own. She has devised a plan. Natalie isn/t just another subservient- she is a free thinker, they haven’t squashed her idea of her self worth, she’s feisty and stubborn. I found this story emotional at times and it does end in a cliffhanger. I received an arc copy of this book from the author.
Dark: 4.5-5/5, rating is higher due to the cult factor. Psychological: 4.5-5/5 Romance: 2/5, Not a Bad Rating(!) It Fits the Book (For Now Lol) Suspenses 5/5 Drama: 5/5 Heat: 4-4.5/5, This rating includes also Dark Heat.
I Will Give No Spoilers! I don’t read many cult books, NOT Because I dislike them, quite the opposite actually. I Highly Enjoy them, but it’s hard to find really good ones that will catch and keep my attention. And I made sure to read the Prequel for this book and then immediately jumped onto this one, and I could not stop reading! This is definitely made the top 5 of my favorites from Clarissa! I loved how dark & twisted it is, and that cliffhanger is driving me crazy cause I just want the story to keep going! I need more Noah & Natalie! Lol
I completely recommend this! I will buy this book as soon as possible!
This has been a particularly hard review for me to write!
I must say first off, I love Clarissa Wild, and her books. However....
This book just didnt do it for me, I found the situation more disturbing than romantic.
As a rule, for me anyway ,romance/ dark romance books take you to a place you can only dream of. With characters you could only dream of meeting . For me this book didn't do that. I found myself grateful I wasn't a character from it, and hope I never have the same experience.
My 3 stars is based on writing and story line .
Clarissa is a brilliantly talented writer and even in a situation like this, where I wasn't invested in the book I still read to the end and am still eager to read the next installment and see where she takes it all.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Wow! This book is simply phenomenal. What can I say—you will be astonished by the cliffhanger! This is a different type of story, but an amazing read! This story will keep you on the edge of your seat to find out what happened next. I was flabbergasted with the unexpected revelations that happened, but it is jaw-dropping good! Noah belongs to the Family, a lifestyle he was raised in and accepted. Noah is one who will manipulate anyone to get what he wants, but everyone must follow the rules of the Family. Kidnapped. Drugged. Stolen. Natalie is forced into a world of darkness and terror. Natalie was thrust into unfathomable circumstances after her curiosity caused her to seek the man with the tattoo on his hand—the same symbol as the one on her scarf that she carried from the orphanage. Something Natalie does not know, Noah has a plan for Natalie. I can’t wait to read the next book to find out what happens next! Clarissa Wild has constructed a deliciously dark romance that will lure you into the wee hours and beyond that, you will not be able to put this book down. This is a MUST READ!! You won’t regret reading Under His Rule!
Wow ! This story drew you right in right from the very beginning and kept you turning the pages to the very end.My hear pounded through the entire story and it kept me on the seat of my pants the entire time. This story was one that was sad and totally whacked and one of that was way out of my comfort zone but, we loved every minute of it.
This story was definitely emotional and heartfelt and one that tugs on your heart string. We loved the characters both good and bad as they were intriguing and ridiculous and some that you wanted to down right murder yourself.
Noah and Natalie were amazing characters as we love their chemistry and the cat and mouse game they played even under the most dire circumstances Natalie was drawn to the dark and dangerous man but, in the end a savior for one another.
Overall this story was filled with intrigue and twists and turns and secrets and there were a whole lot of them and one that no matter the subject matter that was dark and intense but, the entire time it all felt real and you living the nightmare all along with its characters.
This is not a simple romance. Talks about losses, encounters, submission, regrets, passion; expiation, and sex, a lot of sex.
Natalie always wanted to find out about her past. One day, she read an article about a cult that was passing through the city gathering new members. And one of the men had on his hand a tattoo of a symbol that Natalia knew well. It was the same design she had on a scarf, the one that wrapped her up as a baby.
Looking for answers, she goes to that meeting. The place that seemed most secret, had the presence of more than a hundred people, but as if by magic, she attracted the attention of the man with the tattoo and was chosen. This choice was a little forced. She went to a cell, left naked, practically abandoned. There, she would begin to be broken to submit to whatever was imposed on her. She had no answers, but she was already suffering far beyond her understanding.
Noah was the man Natalie wanted. He had answers beyond what she needed to know, but as one of the leaders, he needed to maintain his impeccable position, or he would lose the respect of others. Natalia drew his attention in addition to being a simple subject. She was chosen to be the one who would bear children. It was a polygamous cult.
Wonderfully twisted beginning to this dark romance series.
Natalie has been curious about where she came from for a long time. She has a scarf with a symbol on it that was with her when she was put in the orphanage. When she sees a man with the same symbol tattooed on his hand she is curious and goes to a recruitment meeting to see if he will give her the answers she seeks. The instant Noah sees the beautiful young woman with a scarf on that has his family's symbol, he knows he's found the one he's been looking for. So he captures her and takes her to their compound, The Holy Land. He plans on making her his and where she was looking for answers she'll only find herself Under His Rule!!! The twisted cult like place Natalie finds herself in holds no appeal to her, expect for an elusive woman who Natalie gets the distinct feeling she knows. This is a wonderful read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, Beyond His Control.
I have read a lot of other books by Ms. Wild. I always enjoy them. This one was no different.
I was absolutely consumed by this book! I couldn't put it down! When I wasn't reading I was thinking about the next time I could pick it up.
Natalie can't remember much from her younger years. She was in the orphanage growing up.
One night Natalie wanders into a club area where she doesn't belong. Noah sees the beautiful young woman and he knows he's found the one he's been looking for. Noah captures her and takes her to their compound, The Holy Land. Noah plans on making her his. Natalie doesn't realize that through Noah is where she will find her answers and her new home, The Holy Land, is where she will find her answers, she'll only find herself Under His Rule!!!
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book from the Author. I am freely leaving an honest review.
The cult was creepy . They take women , have them in cages until they submit . They make them wives and the man can have more than one and also share them . Also they fuck in front of all the people .
Now I hate Noah . He slapped her and no no nope . He treats her bad . There was no romance or deep emotions . It was just fucking and forcing her . ( she faked it their first time )
I am not sure if this book just wants for me or what, but I wasn’t a fan of it. The writing was great, Clarissa wrote a very interesting story, but I just couldn’t get into it. A “romance” based on a polygamous cult community is an interesting concept and if that’s what you want to read then give this a try. I however had a hard time connecting with the characters or really caring about either Noah or Natalie let alone any of the side characters. There were a lot of questions that were withheld to create mystery I assume but it left me kinda bored, waiting to learn more. And the fact that Noah kept repeating the same actions while demanding Natalie trust him even though he gave her no reason to fell flat for me. Natalie could be read as a strong female because she was willful and headstrong, but to be it read like a petulant child who just complained a lot about not wanting to be there. I don’t know, there are a lot of great high star reviews for Under His Rule so maybe it just wasn’t a good fit for me. I will have to wait for book 2 and see if that changes my mind overall. -Mackenzie
Under His Rule by Clarissa Wild is the story of Noah and Natalie. This is one psychologically dark, with a steamy suspenseful thriller read. Without giving anything away, just know that this is gritty, gripping, raw, dark, twisted, full of loss, secrets and heartbreak, yet there is plenty of sex and passion. Ms. Wild has written a intensely great read with characters that will have you completely invested in literally 0.5 seconds flat. The chemistry between them is electrifying. The cliffhanger ending has me needing book 2 like yesterday because I need to know what will happen with Noah and Natalie, especially after that twist at the end. Another fabulous read!!
I didn’t know what I was getting into based on the blurb. This was a brutal religious cult with dark themes. A closed community where the men rule, have hard rules and driven by the word of God. And lots of orgys in this community. This is suspenseful as we slowly learn the mystery behind “the Family” and their (Noah and Natalie) childhood. Natalie is an outsider who followed Noah back to his community and was captured and held I. The community. This was a pure grooming and torture place to convert woman to submit. She was a fighter from the beginning. Realizing the game, she smartly assimilated to figure things out. Noah was born and raised in the cult community but harbors some secrets. He plays the alpha but is completely powerless as he gives in to Natalie quite easily. I was surprised at the amount of cursing especially in a place like this where everything was about God and love and rules. Things do not go well as Natalie disrupts the tranquility of the community and all hell breaks out. There’s a cliffy. I’m a bit disturbed by the twists and turn of events. This is a bit uneven and over the top.
I wanted to love this, on paper it had all the tropes I love, I didn't work out.
The writing was poor and the dialogue was very cringey. This is the second Clarissa Wild book I've read recently and I had the same problems. I don't think she's for me.
Lots of people seem to love this author so it might me be that's the problem but I don't think I'll be reading any more of her books.
Wow what an amazing story. I’ve been reading this authors books for about six years. Each book I read I’m more in awe than before.
Under His Rule was an epic read. I stayed up until the early hours as there was no way I was putting it down. Reading the blurb after reading the story I realise the author hasn’t given us much of the storyline so either am I. I’m not going to say anything about what happens.
Noah and Natalie tells us the story in two points of view. Their story is twisted, dark and that ending has me begging for more.
What an Exciting Story!! Natalie works at a shelter, with no memory of where she came from until one photo starts to awaken her memory. Who is she really? When she decides to find out, she ends up in a very dangerous place. Noah is a patriarch of “the family”. They are very private and some would call them a religious cult. When he sees Natalie again at a gathering he knows her return is going to change...everything. What will happen when she is taken? “The truth comes at a hefty price, Natalie. But I think you already know that.” This is an enticing, dark romantic psychological suspense with a twist. I can’t say too much but I really enjoyed the unfolding of this dark story. This unique story has you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next and yes it ends on one huge cliffhanger. Told in dual POV
This book had me hooked from the beginning! What a great read! Also loved the cliff hanger at the end. I'm about to go get the second book, I cannot wait!
This is a very dark cult book if you're going to have trigger I wouldn't read this book. This book I stopped reading because I was so Confused on what I was reading until I realize that I was reading a cult book that was very very dark the story will take you on a journey of eggs amazing darkness that will have you actually stopping to think if it’s something we want to continue I am did up finishing the story because I just keep getting drawn to it and have found that it is very exciting and very very dark and very very good cannot wait for the next story to come out as I need to know what happens in this book as it is very mysterious and exciting.confused on what I was reading until I realized that I was reading a cult book that was very very dark the story will take you on a journey of eggs amazing darkness that will have you actually stopping to think if it’s something we want to continue I am did up finishing the story because I just kept getting drawn to it and I found that it is very exciting and very very dark and very very good cannot wait for the next story to come out as I need to know what happens in this book as it is very mysterious and exciting
Okay, so I read the prequel leading up to this book and it was intriguing as it encompassed a new world in a way. A teenage boy helps a mother to “save” her daughter❣️
This story starts when Natalie is older and is curious as to where she’s come from and how she ended up being orphaned with very little to go on....other than a scarf with a symbol on it🧣When Noah sees her, he instructs a man to grab her and so begins her introduction into the Family😢
This story was definitely unexpected and I can honestly say I wasn’t quite sure where it was going until I was about 3/4 of the way through. Thank you to Clarissa for my advanced copy for which I voluntarily leave my honest review😍
Under His Rule by Clarissa Rule starts the story of Noah and Natalie so there will be another book to continue their story. Natalie was a orphan who was raised in a orphanage with her only connection to her mystery past was a scarf that she had from her childhood. When she starts to wonder about it she ends up seeing a man with a tattoo of the same design as her scarf. This leads her to meet Noah who is a part of a cult that has darkness around it. Noah is drawn to Natalie and knows that he must have her so he takes her to the compound called 'The Holy Land. This does have trigger and dark scene so if you aren't into that this won't be the book for you. I hope to read the next installment soon!
Wow amazing intense story! I feel like it just started! Natalie is stolen and at a cult she hates it all and just wants to go home. Noah is determined to get what he wants and no one is gonna stop him ..Natalie. I love how strong willed Natalie is and doesn’t give up throughout this story. Noah he’s a very secretive guy and your mind wants to hate him but love him at the same time! Definitely a must read and I can’t wait to read the next book! 5/5 stars
What is it about Clarissa and her writing about a cult? Clarissa dives right into it and brings you along for the ride. I love how you get so caught up in the story that when you find yourself, in the end, you are wondering what the hell just happened. Noah and Natalie are perfect characters, and Clarissa gives you just enough information to keep you going and guessing. Under His Rule, we have the family who brings in members to follow the prophet and president. Somehow these members become so brainwashed that they start following without even wondering how or why they are doing it.
Natalie has no memory of her childhood. All she has is a scarf with a symbol so when she sees a man in a newspaper with the same thing on his hand she knows she has to find out what he knows. Little does she know that it will put her in more danger than ever before.
Noah has been watching and waiting for Natalie to show up for years. He knew eventually she would want to know about her past. So when Noah sees Natalie in a crowd he is ready to kidnap her and bring her into the family
Under His Rule is a must-read story and I can not wait for the next installment!
