Nearly a year after an illegal gold mine was discovered and shut down another mystery is presented to the town of Rapid City and it's up to Judge Preston, Marshal Savage, and Zeke Conley to find the source and stop another bloodbath. The three are assisted again by Ben, a hundred and fifty pound monster of a dog with the courage of a bear and the cunning of a cougar.
First of all, there weren't any chapter divisions, lots of misspelled words, superfluous and boring descriptions like someone adding 1 bean at a time to make a burrito. It took way too long to finally give a clue to the reason for the storyline, 77% of the whole book. In the meantime, just repetitive attacks, gory descriptions and too many new characters being added all along. The only reason I persevered to the end was because I paid a lousy $.99 for it, and wanted to add it to my list of books read for the year. I did that, but still feel like I wasted my money.
Well, unless you like zombies and other beasties with your cowboys I'd skip The Return and Haunted West. Chester's Last Ride is a better read. But if you do read them, the trilogy in order are.... 1. Haunted West 2. The Return 3. Chester's Last Ride There are threads of an excellent series of books hidden beneath a lot of distracted writing and poor editing. A re-read before publishing would have helped all books, especially the first two.
This is defiantly not a typical western. Zeke and Ben, marshal Savage, judge Preston, and some railroad men are looking for missing people. Many of the missing are found eaten by people infested with rabies. A very gross read. This author also does not know the correct tense of verb usage.
I don't read or watch zombies ! Even knowing this was about Zeke and Ben I was almost ready to give up because it took a while for them to make an appearance! More Zeke and Ben please!
I hope the author continues to improve. The story is good. Constant use of terms like “he reached him a gun.” Should be reworded to “he handed him…” and other phrases like that. Made my eyes hurt reading it over and over…
Love the characters in this book. Have read all the books I could find with them in it. The plots are different but still good. Hope the series is continued.
Just the dead villains ruined what could have been another enjoyable western. Should have left well enough alone and just kept turning out great westerns
A good story may be buried in all the poor grammar and worse punctuation but it's too much work to dig it out. Mr. Wright, don't waste your effort. Get an editor.
Not your typical Western. really held my interest.. Well thought out book. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and loved the interplay between Human and horses and dog. Great read.
The author desperately needed an editor. There were so many punctuation problems in the writing that the book was difficult to read. I had to guess what the author’s intended meaning was throughout the book. There were so many comma splices that I was repeatedly reading lines and figuring out where one sentence should have ended and a new sentence should have begun. I counted more than fifteen comma splices and run-on sentences in the first few pages. I have taught junior high, high school and university level writing courses. I can tell you that my eighth graders had a better grasp of basic punctuation than this author demonstrated. It’s a shame. Having to make sense out of very poorly punctuated writing took the joy out of reading this book.
I could not put this book down. It was very well written and you had no idea what was going to happen next. !over the dog character...he was almost human. Put him in another book please.
Fellow readers this is a "what, what moment! People will stoop to any means necessary to get what they want. Men are injected with a super radical strain of "rabies" injection. Strange but then not strange a group of medical doctors from the south who wanted to enhance the chances of winning the Civil War. Their ultimate goal didn't work, but it didn't go un-noticed, it was said that Andrew Jackson who was appointed as President of the Confederate States was supposedly not aware of this situation. Men were captured and injected with this super strain of rabies to scare people off their farms. These farms where abandoned and brought up a Dalton Talbot aka Lloyd Schafer who was behind this horrendous crimes committed against humanity. This was almost a take off of the "walking dead." I would like a little more history about Hazel the green eyed mare and Ben a huge one hundred and fifty pound of mixed breed of dog. But I speak and think quitely about Ben and Hazel. Per Marshal Zeke whom these two friends, he even said they were just there, no one came to claim them, so we are together..strangely weird, right? I hope to read more about Marshals Zeke, Savage and Judge Preston. A very strange group of people. This is worth reading and it keeps you wanting to know more about what's going on..Strange strange!! So why should the West just contain cowboys, crazy gun toting gangs, land grabbing and slave owners who wanted free labor to work the silver and gold mines..wouldn't surprise me or you right. Ways don't change only the people who apply them for their own selfish narcissistic wants.
The Return by Nathan Wright. Book two of the series about strange things happening in the area of Judge Preston, Marshall Savage and Zeke with his dog Ben. With undead men and cannibals. It's one adventure after another keeping you reading!
NW. had penned a western action adventure horror tale, which he must have concocted after watching "The Walking Dead" I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and would like to see a western movie made. It could be serious or tongue in cheek. Fear the walking dead or become like them from a single bite. The only way to kill them is to shoot them in the head or decapitate them. This is an excellent read for the genre. I laughed all the way through the reading.....DEHS
Ok, I have to ask? Is the virulent rabies a true fact? Fast action. This one is a horror story. Not a horror story fan , although one was well written.
