One where sophisticated technology sits alongside the latest supply chain management and business thinking. In short, a dynamic forward looking place where, just as in the UK, you might decide to buy French cheese in a German owned supermarket or Angus beef burgers (not Aberdeen Angus as I first thought!) in a French one without any sense of guilt or hypocrisy. The 'real Spain' is just as up to date as the rest of Europe ... and yet ... and yet there is a timeless quality to it all, even today. You find it in how people react to each other, in the kindness they show in their daily dealings and the simple pride they take when their efforts are appreciated. In the people, even today in this modern world, their exists the essence of the 'real Spain'. In a word, today's Spain has CHARM. And THAT is the real Spain'.In this popular memoir, amid the chaos of the Brexit Referendum, Bob unexpectedly receives a modest inheritance which enables him to realize his dream of buying a holiday home in the less touristy bits of The Costa Blanca. But the Government in the UK is imploding, the exchange rate is tumbling and interest rates are on the floor. Is buying a property in Spain wise at such a time? Undeterred Bob and his long-suffering wife, Bee, plough on and find a home they think is 'paradise'. But nobody seems to know who owns the road, and one by one almost everything in the apartment breaks! At first, I thought I was not going to like to book, too many references to Brexit and politics. But slowly the book grew on me after about five chapters when I realised myself and the author had a bit in common. Although this book predates our move to Spain, it carries on almost to the present day. There are so many problems and issues, fantastic discoveries, and culture shocks that we have both lived through. I can identify with many of the subjects covered and I feel we think the same when it comes to Spanish living. This isn't "Driving over Lemons" far from it, the book takes a different view of the move to Spain. (for the record I love Driving over Lemons and many like it) I think people who are considering moving to Spain should read this, before listening to the hundred of Expats who have their opinion of the country.
Using a reference from the book, manana can actually mean manana when dealing with Spanish working, things do get done straight away. Another refreshing section (not a spoiler) is when they meet another couple who sit in a bar complaining about Spain being Spain and wanting to move back. "Why don't the Spanish learn English they learn it at school" I might have written the response myself.
This book went from being put down in chaprter four to getting a top review. Glad I stuck with it.
I usually enjoy books written by the brave (or foolish) people who have upped sticks and gone off to make their home in sunnier climes. I have always wished I could do it. Sadly, I am not brave enough and anyway we have too many ties here in the UK. Anyway, this book was a bit mediocre. I have read way better. Driving over Lemons is one example. I would give this one a miss.

A modest inheritance, funds the Spanish dream. Good little read, well written. Some terrific yarns as a semi retired couple buy a villa in Spain. Nothing will be easy, but they meet each challenge head on. A very comfortable read, highly recommend.
Bob is very adept at explaining some of the more complicated business dealings in Spain and smart to look to a friend when help is needed. This memoir has a smooth, relaxed style.
Very easy to read and follow. The author has a great sense of humour which make the book more enjoyable. Informative and has some useful information when buying property in Spain.
Excellant read, really enjoyed it and can relate to much of it as an expat (for 5 years full time)in same area. Starting to read next in series. Well done Bob and Bee and take care.
Really enjoyed this book. I know the area and hope to retire to this region myself (provided BREXIT doesn't prevent it). Currently reading the next installment.
A good read, perhaps slightly lacking in humour for this type of book, no giggly moments, but brougnt back many happy memories of buying a village house in this part of spain, but with no peter gunn to help us, look forward to the next installment
