Lorenzo de' Medici. Una vita da Magnifico

Lorenzo de' Medici, detto il Magnifico (1449-92), è uno dei personaggi più rappresentativi della storia italiana. Nessun intellettuale, infatti, ebbe nelle proprie mani altrettanto potere e nessun uomo di governo fu così consapevole della propria cultura. Buon politico e mediocre banchiere, ottimo poeta e scadente stratega, Lorenzo diede prova in più occasioni di coraggio fisico e destrezza, ma ebbe anche un raffinato gusto per l'arte, e fu padrone di Firenze senza mai mostrarlo apertamente.

Ricco, elegante, colto, sciupafemmine e ambiguo, capace di slanci generosi e, se necessario, di una buona dose di crudeltà, egli impersona pregi e difetti di un'età irripetibile, oltre che il culmine dell'epopea dei Medici, la famiglia che più di ogni altra ha promosso lo splendore del Rinascimento.

Con lo sguardo complice e il passo sicuro di chi conosce a fondo epoca e luoghi, Giulio Busi segue Lorenzo nella sfera privata, negli amori e nelle amicizie, e lo accompagna nella sua ascesa alla ribalta della politica italiana e internazionale: la Firenze di Leonardo e del giovane Michelangelo, la Milano opulenta degli Sforza, la Roma degli intrighi pontifici, la Napoli florida di Ferrante d'Aragona, la Venezia dei traffici e dei sospetti.

Attorno a Lorenzo, intanto, si muove la scena concitata del Quattrocento italiano. Tutti lo ammirano, alcuni lo odiano, qualcuno cerca di ucciderlo. Nel duomo di Firenze, nell'aprile 1478, i pugnali dei congiurati massacrano suo fratello Giuliano. Lui sfugge d'un soffio alla morte, e subito si abbandona a una vendetta implacabile. Uscirà dalla tormenta più forte, più solo, più Magnifico che mai.

In questa biografia elegante, rigorosa nelle fonti ma anche poetica e ironica, la straordinaria vita di Lorenzo de' Medici trova finalmente un racconto all'altezza dei suoi fasti e delle sue contraddizioni.

Lui, Lorenzo, non è bello, anzi. E nemmeno irresistibile. L’abbiamo visto cadere da cavallo, imbranarsi con i conti del banco, e anche come filosofo non gli daremmo un dieci tondo. A crear miti però nessuno lo batte. E a forza di costruirli ha assemblato il mito più grande di tutti e il più duraturo, quello di se stesso, principe inarrivabile del Rinascimento.

A very good book on Lorenzo the Magnificent, for which the author has clearly made a lot of research, which he justifies at the end of the book with an extensive, detailed bibliography.

It is a great book from a political and diplomatic standpoint, which are the aspects of Lorenzo's life that are treated the most.

I have read it in one go and absolutely loved it, especially with the quoted passages from diairies, letters and poems, making it all the more realistic and rich.

Notwithstanding the great quality of the book, the downsides of it are threefold:

First, Giuliano and Clarice are nearly absent, despite being part of the closest people in his life, and the author spends in contrast a lot of time describing potential relationships of varying nature with Lucrezia Donatti and Simonetta Vespucci, which only account for a very short time period and remain absolute question marks.

This brings a second point, which oddly is not taken into account by the author: the nature of rapports between men and women at the time. In the Renaissance, there were the women one would paint and write poems about in a platonic, idealised way, and the women one would marry and never have this type of interactions with. This is very
important to understand records and not shed a contemporary interpretation on them.

Additionally, Clarice is portrayed by the author as a woman of little interest to Lorenzo and Italian history, which is also odd as according to other records, she helped him a lot in his affairs and he entrusted her with missions that elevated her to a dignified position in the world, which not many women would have enjoyed at the time. This only brings further magnificence to Lorenzo. As to their intimate life, his letter to the pope (only mentioned in the bibliography at the end) following her death, in which he confesses never to have been hit so hard by any event, shows that the interest and love he had for her were quite solid.

Similarly, there would be a lot to say about Giuliano, and we know nothing of him in the book aside from three events of his life, which is a real pity.

The third point is the choice of the author to add modern comparisons and modern words throughout the book, which took me out of the narrative each time it was happening. When you have made so much research and have such an incredible bibliography, it is an odd stylistic choice and I think it is not necessary, but other readers might like this and find it fun.

Despite these downsides, great read, I recommend!
