Roman Blaylock is a Class A sweetheart. He is such a good guy. I love that he’s all about taking care of people. It was sad what his ex-wife did to him. She seriously sucked. She took advantage of his good heart, stuck him with a child that wasn’t his (although he fell in love with and raised her as his own), and refused to have sex with him. Then, she takes all their money and runs off with some other guy she got pregnant by.
At first, it seemed as though Kallista wasn’t going to be nice enough for him, but she turns out to be the right woman for Roman. She’s all fire, and she’s not afraid of him. Roman likes that she’s feisty and doesn’t fear him, like his ex-wife did. He decides she’s the one for him, although things are very complicated, since she is one of his best friend’s grandchildren, and he has promised to take care of them and his friend’s estate for them. I just loved that Roman was a man who took his promises seriously. He did what he said he was going to do. He didn’t take intimacy lightly, and exercised a lot of self-control when some men would have felt license to do differently.
Kallista is very suspicious of Roman, but it made sense, considering that she grew up with a mother who had a revolving door of boyfriends, some of whom tried to rape her. So I can understand her trust issues. But initially I wanted her to back off of Roman with her assuming he was taking advantage of an old man, when everything showed to the contrary that Roman was a good, kind man. It was good to see that Kaliista grew to trust him, and found herself drawn to Roman, falling in love with the gentle man he was, although he was also a strong, Western man. The kind of man that she’d love to be with if she was able to settle down and to trust in the future.
This was an engaging, quirky read, with unique characters, and a lot of atmosphere. There is always a distinctive feel to Cait London’s books, and that brings me back to her category romances. I always enjoy her books. This one wasn't a five star because some of the narrative seemed a bit repetitive, but it's close enough with a 4.5/5.0 star rating. I am slowly savoring her backlist, and this is another book by her that I’m adding to my favorites list.
Uggh! Nothing says attractive than a hero who is a martyr. Let me count the ways how: He married his ex when she she was preggers with someone else's child, she wouldn't let him touch him for 13 YEARS, he basically worked himself to the bone to give said ex a lavish lifestyle and then when she ups and leaves him broke for another man, is a stoic sissy. Ug-oh! Then again the heroine is also the shrew of the highest order and he should have basically pressed charges against her. She was hell bent on proving he was crooked, breaking into his house, taking glee in reading about his horrid marriage and just being the worst person ever. My blood kept boiling while reading this.
He’s a hard headed man and she’s not much easier to love.
I’ve read other books by Cait London and enjoyed them. The writing style is smooth and the characters are interesting. This is a quick read… I read it in one afternoon.
Now, to be fair I have to admit, Kallista was hard to love. Really. It took me quite a bit of the book to even want to root for her because she was so stubborn. There is an explanation for why she’s so stubborn. She’s been damaged. But I really didn’t like how she gave Roman such a hard time. I mean a HARD time. I didn’t want to like her, but eventually she won me over. Roman’s just as tough to love. He’s got a very old fashioned version of what love should be and he’s almost twice as stubborn as her. He wants so much to do what’s right, which is admirable in him as a character, but at times it did annoy me. Still, I wanted these two to get together and am glad I read the book. I’m on the hunt for others in this series. As I said, Ms. London’s writing style is crisp, so I’ll definitely look for more of her work.
If you’re hankering for a western story with bold characters, then this might be the book for you.
I’m picking up and rereading some very old favourites. Whilst I love Ms London’s books, the errors in this are atrocious. Roman is just so sweet, gentlemanly and likeable but just too unbelievable in his behaviour and thinking. At times I wanted to give him a good straightening out. I put this down to the age of the book, especially with how waspish and plain nasty Kallista is towards Roman, even after reading about how his ex-wife treated him. After marrying his high school sweetheart, who is pregnant with another mans child. Roman suffers coldness and misery in his 13 year marriage, as his supposed wife is scared of him and won’t have sex with him, though she does go on to take all his money. Leave him in debt and runs off with another man. I so wanted to get my hands on Debbie, this prize piece of womanhood. She wouldn’t know what hit her. He then agrees to another cold marriage with Kallista, (she has to marry him if she wants to learn the truth). The man is a masochist and glutton for punishment apparently. I admire that he keeps his word to Boone as executor but he risks losing Kallista, who is just warming up to him, with his I CAN’T TELL YOU THE TRUTH attitude. Kallista, though she has genuine reasons for not trusting men, is just too rude, stubborn and downright nasty. It is hard to like her when she does nothing but accuse Roman of all manner of terrible things. For someone who is so well travelled, speaks many languages and works as a trouble-shooter for a large company, it just doesn’t work for me that she accuses before knowing the facts. The whole Hyacinth/Cindi thing was weird. How he just adopts her. There is no explanation for how Roman is funding everything. I assume it is from Boone’s estate. The Llewelyn saga must continue in Rio’s book. I do love the shades of similarity to the TALLCHIEFS series but these aren’t anywhere as good as them. The flow is not as smooth. Read through my library.
