I thought this book had a beautiful ending. I loved the characters and I thought Riley was a sweet little girl and very wise for her seven years. I love second chance romances and Drew and Janie filled that role nicely. The main point about the story was that although we make plans for our lives God may have better plans for us. And that's what this book is really about. Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart deviseth his way : But the Lord directeth his steps.
The main characters of this book are Janie Edmiston , her daughter Riley and Drew Brenner. All that Janie really wants is a home for her seven year old daughter. Janie has just gone through a painful divorce from an abusive husband. Drew lost his wife and young daughter two years ago in a terrible car accident. He is riddled with guilt because he had been responsible for the accident. The two learn they are named in the will of a very dear friend, but there is a stipulation they must meet before it's official. If they fail to meet the requirements in the given amount of time the property will be sold and the money donated to charity. Will they have the time to fulfill Mary Applegates wishes before it's too late ? Did the deceased have an ulterior motive to bring these two friends back together in the hopes that there could be something more for them in the future? I would recommend this book to readers of contemporary romance and Harlequin Love Inspired books. This book is part of The Whispering Slopes series but it can be read as a stand alone. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you. A review was not requested. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Just as the cover promises, seven-year-old Riley steals the show in this heartwarming, hope-filled second chance love story. She melts Drew's resistance and burrows her way into his heart before he knows what's happening. Even as memories of the crush he used to have on Riley's mom start to resurface. But a lifetime of tragedy and hurt have battered him into submission and he isn't about to expose himself to any more pain and heartbreak. So Janie is definitely high up on his keep-at-arms length list. But when they are thrown together thanks to some unusual will stipulations (matchmaking from Heaven?) Janie and Drew learn how to let go of past hurts in favour of the kind of hope that can only be found in a future together. This one had me chuckling and swooning and sighing my way right to the very end.
Jill Weatherholt has written an interesting and compelling spin on an inheritance in A Home for Her Daughter. I enjoyed this story!
Janie Edmiston, fresh out of a controlling and abusive marriage, finds the answers to her prayers when her friend Mrs. Applegate leaves her an inheritance of land and house. There's a condition though, Janie must work together with Drew Brenner to get the Applegate camp up and running again or she'll lose her chance to provide a home for her daughter. Riley is the cutest character and helps lighten the the at times heavy topics of abuse, pain and grief. Drew Brenner knows quite a bit about those topics himself after losing his wife and child in an accident he considers his fault.
Janie and Drew have a lot of past issues to deal with if they are going to ever have a chance at a future together. Fortunately, even when they weren't looking for love, they got a second chance when they least expected it. A Home for Her Daughter is an inspirational story that will have the reader smiling by story's end.
Talk about a great second chance romance romance this one is. Janie Edmiston and Drew Brenner were childhood friends with secret crushes on each other. They are both recovering from things that hurt them in different ways. Janie is rebuilding her life after a bad marriage. Drew is recovering from a very personal loss. What I love about this bookis that Jill doesn't hide the fact of how hard it is to recover. She gives you an idea of the shame Janie deals with til she decides to step away from it. With Drew she shows his gradual coming to terms with his loss. This book is well written and well researched on what Janie deals with. Having been there it shows a balance in the book deal with both situations. The way they gradual come together is a respect for Janie's situation. You will love the ending. I look forward to the next book in this series. J
A HOME FOR HER DAUGHTER by Jill Weatherholt is the fabulously, well-written story of Janie Capello Edmiston and Drew Brenner.
Janie is hoping for a fresh, new start moving back to her home town with her daughter, Riley, after divorcing her husband whose constant degrading left Janie feeling worthless and always second guessing herself. Drew has withdrawn from the world as much as possible after the accidental death of his wife and daughter. He lives in a cabin in the woods and changed jobs where he has as little association with people as possible. The last thing either of them need or want is someone else in their life to complicate things.
The death of Mary Applegate, loved by everyone in town and like a mother to Janie, brings Janie and Drew face to face after all these years at the attorney’s office for the reading of her will. Shock doesn’t describe either’s feeling when they learn that for either to inherit both must work closely together to keep Mary’s dream alive. They must get the children’s camp up and running by July 4th or lose it all to charity.
Janie feels that this is her best shot to not only furnish her daughter and her a home but a livelihood as well. Although determined to do it on her own, the stipulations of the will state she can’t. When realization of all that has to be done settles in and the downgrading words of her ex keep entering her mind, she’s glad she doesn’t have to. BUT will Drew agree to the terms when he seems so set against it?
Everyone keeps telling Drew that his deceased wife wouldn’t want him to live the life of a hermit, but to move on and to enjoy life. How can he do that when he feels he’s to blame for the death of both his wife and his child? How can he work with Janie to open the camp when her daughter is so similar in age and looks to his own daughter? It would be a constant reminder of all he has lost. On the other hand, he can’t turn his back on an old friend knowing he would be taking away her means to support herself and her daughter as well as a safe place to live.
Janie and Drew share a past, are reunited in the present and maybe, just maybe have a future. Can they both make peace with the past to make room for a future? Will Riley be the glue that holds it all together making all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place? Was Mary’s plan all along based on playing matchmaking for two close childhood friends?
A HOME FOR HER DAUGHTER is a delightful story of loss, love, overcoming the past by God’s grace and second chances. Jill Weatherhold told an inspirational story laced with love, faith, building one’s confidences by seeing ourselves as God sees us, and seeing life through the innocence of a child. Definitely recommend A HOME FOR HER DAUGHTER to anyone that enjoys a great Christian story that will pull on your heart strings and have you cheering for second chances. A great big FIVE STARS from me!
A Home for Her Daughter is a beautifully crafted novel penned by Jill Weatherholt. I kept seeing the cover of this book on social media and I loved the cover each time I saw photos of it so I knew I wanted to read it. My heart went out to the newly divorced Janie Edmiston and her precious daughter, Riley and I was thrilled for their good fortune of having a home of their own. Obviously, there were strings attached to their good fortune but worth the inconvenience of having to work with your childhood friend and crush, Drew Brenner who is a widower.
I genuinely cared about Janie and Drew who were both dealing with losses and pain in their lives, they were both so likeable that I found myself rooting for them to have bright, happy futures. Letting go of the past isn’t always the easiest thing to do but once you do, the rocky road you have traveled may take you to where you were meant to be.
I can’t believe that this is the first book that I have read by the author but it wont be the last because her writing is pretty fantastic.
Single mother Jamie Edmiston, just out of an abusive marriage, starts her new life in the small town where she grew up, before her disastrous union. To her surprise, an old friend dies and leaves much of her estate to Jamie and childhood friend, Drew Brenner, a forest ranger and himself a widower who blames himself for the death of his wife and child. The catch is they must work together to open a summer camp by July 4th. To do this will require they spend lots of time together, focusing on the deadline, ignoring their past. But it’s not as simple as a tight schedule and an almost impossible timeline. Both of them have secrets they’re not willing to share and as partners, that’s a problem.
I've read almost all (all?) of Weatherholt's cozy romances and can't get enough of them. She has a way with words that says so much more than syllables and sentences. She tells a story that grabs your heart and pulls you right in.
Highly recommended for those who love dramatic stories with happy endings.
The reading of a will reunites two old friends who must work together in order to take advantage of a generous inheritance. Janie, the mother of a little girl named Riley, has a secret—she’s just left an abusive marriage. But she’s not the only one with a painful past. Drew’s wife and daughter died in a car accident, and he blames himself for falling asleep at the wheel.
The characters are endearing, and they become increasingly closer as they face the challenges of fulfilling the will’s requirements and accepting their past mistakes. This is the perfect book for romance readers who appreciate cute kids and a sweet tale of second chances.
There is a lot I enjoyed about A Home for Her Daughter. From both Janie’s and Drew’s second chance at family to their childhood friendship to Janie’s daughter (who pretty much steals every scene she’s in, but I’m okay with that), Jill Weatherholt pulled me into this story and captured my heart.
When Janie and Drew reconnect, they’re both determined to open the camp and move on, but as they share their deepest regrets and heartaches, they are drawn to each other even more. Janie is filled with doubts but with Drew’s steady encouragement, she starts to let go of the lies built up previously. And Drew carries a burden of guilt with him that Janie and her daughter Riley ease. And Riley? You just can’t help but love this little girl and her concern for her mother and automatic connection to Drew.
Both Drew and Janie have had some difficult life circumstances that have pushed them to the point of breaking, but they find strength and purpose in working toward the common goal of the camp. Weatherholt addresses the topic of Janie’s previous marriage situation well, and the budding romance shows a respect for her concerns and fears.
Those moments are balanced well with the more sweet and lighthearted moments in the book, and the ending is just what I hoped for.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
‘A Home for Her Daughter’ is a beautiful, heartwarming and tender romance that does not shy away from tackling deeper and more serious topics such as loss, guilt and marital abuse.
Jill has a knack of drawing the reader immediately into the story as the two main protagonists meet up to listen to the reading of a will at the local lawyer’s office in Whispering Slopes.
Drew Brenner has been a recluse following the loss of his wife and young daughter; struggling to carry on in life as he feels responsible for their deaths.
Meanwhile, childhood sweetheart, Janie Capello, has newly returned to the town after she finally found the courage to leave her violent ex-husband. Will she ever be able to trust a man again? Her vulnerability and lack of confidence are palpable.
Janie inherits a house, money and a camp, a place she loved to visit as young. However, the caveat is that she works with Drew to prepare to open within a month!
As the scene is set, Jill skillfully propels the story forward whilst at the same time filling in seamlessly events from their past lives. Her writing is self-assured, confident and gentle.
The book is part of the Love Inspired Inspirational Romance who offer books with ‘uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.’ As such it is not surprising Janie and Drew both turn to God with their prayers, although both have had reason to question events in their own lives.
Whilst Janie and Drew are wonderfully portrayed and immediately come to life for the reader, it is Janie’s seven-year-old daughter, Riley who steals the show and is the core of the novel. With bundles of cuteness and charisma she charms her way into our hearts, her wisdom profound and of course with her guiding hand Drew and Janie find themselves drawn to each other.
Will it be enough though or will their past experiences intervene and become a barrier for their love? Although the end is never in doubt in this genre of books, Jill creates an original modern-day twist on romantic endings!
Finally, many thanks for Jill for the gift of her latest book, a most welcome present during these troubled times. My review here is my honest and impartial reflections about the book.
I have read, and enjoyed, each book written by Jill Weatherholt. I read a variety of genres involving numerous topics, usually reading fiction and non-fiction each and every day. This author’s latest Love Inspired Inspirational Romance became my afternoon leisure reading prior to starting the evening’s dinner prep.
“Life doesn’t always turn out the way we planned, but that’s okay, because it does go on” a statement made by one of the main characters, Drew. We are all intimately aware of the twists and turns life can bring, and reading Drew’s honest statement brought encouragement to my own life.
I sincerely liked the reasoning the characters expressed when things didn't go their way. When that occurs, if we’re being honest, we question if such happenings are God’s way of teaching us a lesson – or punishing us for our perceived failures and/or mistakes. Isn’t that just how our minds and hearts work far too often?
The dialogue of the young child, Riley, is spot-on. Her relationship with Janie, her mother, is honest and endearing. The author really excelled at accurately portraying how a younger child may talk – it wasn’t put on, it wasn’t babyish, it was thoroughly respectful of a child’s efforts to figure out what’s what with a transparency that is thoroughly refreshing.
Two of the primary storylines address important elements that far too many have experienced and who struggle to heal and move forward as a whole person having been exposed to that life occurrence. Healing scars doesn’t just involve the physical aspect of our lives – emotional and spiritual healing are just as vital. Ms. Weatherholt demonstrates how that is the case, and she does so 100% effectively.
I have just one bit of advice to those considering whether or not to purchase this book: do it!
I really look forward to reading Love Inspired books by Harlequin Books. The books are short and easy to read, and a multitude of Authors to select from. The Love Inspired series is especially interesting as they are clean Romance books!

The inheritance includes a House, Money and a Camp. The only thing is she must work closely with Drew Brenner, a childhood friend and Crush. Will there be a LOVE CONNECTION and relationship between the 2?
A Home for Her Daughter is a book about Second Chances, letting of of the past, rediscovering life after loss, love and family. I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It was a Quick Read and a FABULOUS Read! I highly recommend this book.
In this Inspirational Romance from the Love Inspired collection, it's a darling little girl that takes center stage, beginning with the charming cover. Riley's mom, Janie, and her best friend from high school, Drew, have been named beneficiaries in the will of a woman who had been dear to them. But there are stipulations before they receive their inheritances, and they must work together to achieve a common goal before the offer expires. Both Janie and Drew have no romantic interest in each other, because they haven't healed from past hurts. But their love for Riley, and their shared goal eventually brings them together.
I enjoyed how the story played out. Drew was very helpful in pursuit of the goal, and Janie began realizing and using her strengths. Their journey was encouraging to experience, and the story had plenty of great developments. And even though it was fiction, I enjoyed reading a story that took place geographically close to me.
As Drew and Janie's thoughts were revealed to the reader, they seemed a little emo to me, and it was frustrating how they would cut themselves out of potential happiness because of what had happened in their previous relationships. Other than that, I enjoyed this story and would read more from this author.
I received an e-ARC from the author, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
This is a heart-tugging story of two people who have each suffered great loss, but find themselves faced with the opportunity for a bright future—if they can find the courage to step out in faith and accept the new start that’s been presented to them. It takes courage for both Janie and Drew to trust each other and accept the risk of being hurt by life again. At the heart of this story is Rachel, a lively, spunky seven year old who has also experienced a series of unwelcome changes. It’s for Rachel’s sake that Janie and Drew team up to reopen Rocky River Camp and give Rachel the home and future that Janie could only dream of providing for her. For Janie, it will take rediscovering the faith she had as a child. For Drew, it will mean stepping out of his sorrow to embrace the faith he already possesses, and trusting God to direct his next steps.
I enjoyed this sweet story with the themes of faith, hope, and love. The author did a great job of drawing me into this story through the compelling characters of Janie, Drew, and Rachel.
Please note: This book does contain references to spousal abuse. If this is a trigger for you, I wanted you to be aware of this before you read the book.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
What a fun read. It has some romance and quite a bit of suspense. Someone is out to keep the camp from succeeding. Can Drew and Janie find out who before everything is ruined? Or worse?
Janie is recently divorced from an abusive husband and she has a hard time trusting, especially men. She wants to be able to stand on her own two feet and not rely on a man. Plus she’s still looking over her shoulder for her ex to show up.
This is a fun read. I love Riley and her involvement in the story. She’s just enough precocious to keep the story moving and endear her to your heart.
I don’t want to give away too much, but you’re going to love the mystery in the story and the mystery surrounding Drew as well. This book read really quickly for me and I was sad to see it end though it’s a happy ending.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. A Home for Her Daughter by Jill Weatherholt is part of the Love Inspired series. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I love the cover of this book. The art department did such a great job drawing you in. In this story, we see Janie who is recently divorced. Her ex husband was always tearing her down. Janie and her daughter, Riley move back to their hometown. Janie has been very damaged from her previous marriage. Drew who is a widower has withdrawn himself. Drew and Janie have a past. The death of Mary Applegate who leaves Janie leaves her an inheritance of land and house. But all this comes with a catch. Janie and Drew have to get the camp up and running.... together. Can they heal from the past and pull it off. The author has created some realistic characters. She writes how both of the main characters has some issues to heal from. I love how real feeling the story felt. I always enjoy reading anything that comes from the Love Inspired Series.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit Blogging program. All thoughts are my own,.
A story as sweet as the cover! I love a good second-chance romance, and Jill Weatherholt’s A Home for Her Daughter does not disappoint.
Inheriting a camp gives newly divorced Janie Edmiston and her daughter a much-needed fresh start. Of course, this fresh start is not without its surprises, as it requires her to work with childhood friend (and crush) Drew Brenner to get the camp up and running. Neither Janie nor Drew seem to be ready for new love, and yet… it just might find them anyway.
Throughout A Home for Her Daughter, I enjoyed seeing Janie and Drew reconnect. Both have aspects of the past they need to overcome, and as they grow, it is easy to cheer them on. Riley, too, proves to be a delightful part of the story. If you need a quick and heartwarming read, the three of them make for a perfect one.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
I absolutely loved this Love-inspired romance. Two broken souls who used to be childhood friends, are thrown back together. I received this for free and I voluntarily chose to review this. I've given it a 5* rating. There is a little bit of danger but a lot of fond memories from their childhood to keep moving them on. There are some things to pull at your heartstrings also. I'll be reading more of this author's work.
What a heartwarming story! Life has changed for a mom and her daughter. Life has changed for a childhood friend of the mom, too. Through the ups and downs of decision making, Janie and Drew try to learn not to let the past destroy the future. Sweet Riley is a key part of bringing hope and joy. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
This is a book that is gentle on the soul. It pulls at the heartstrings as it draws readers into the lives of a divorcee and a widower. The relationship unfolds through the shared effort of rebuilding a campground. A child helps guide the story with her innocence and laughter. Overall, this is a story that evokes a smile and restores hope in the values and dreams we hold dear.
I absolutely love all of Jill Weatherholts books! This was a wonderful Love Inspired, second chance book! Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down!
I was immediately drawn into this story and couldn’t stop reading!
An uplifting book about two people dealing with past hurts and helping each other find happiness! What adventures are ahead for Janie and Drew as they work together to save a childhood camp and try to heal from difficult pasts.
Divorced single mom Janie Edmiston returns to Whispering Slopes, Virginia, with her charming daughter. She learns she has inherited a summer camp from a dear friend, but the lady’s will comes with conditions. She and her former close friend, Drew Brenner, must work together to restore and open Rocky River Camp by July 4, or neither will be left anything. Working so closely with a woman he was once attracted to is a concern for park ranger Drew. He prefers his solitary life on the trail after a devastating loss.
The hurtful situation Janie needed to recovery from and the terrible guilt Drew carried were difficult...almost impossible...obstacles to overcome, but through trusting in faith, support from their small town community and the desire to establish a home for precious little Riley, a sweet romance develops between this couple. I was completely engaged with this story. I highly recommend A Home for Her Daughter to those seeking an uplifting story of overcoming challenges to reach special dreams ....and a beautiful happily ever after. Joy can be just beyond life’s difficult times!
*I received a copy of this book with no requirement to write a review. I’m pleased to offer my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed reading this story and getting to know about Janie, Riley and Drew! This is a story about two people who have both had a tragic and terrible past, but has came together through a will and their old friendship. It is also a remarkable story of forgiveness and forgiving ones self above all else and being able to move forward and knowing that if you don't forgive yourself and those who have wronged you then you won't be able to move forward in harmony and God's love for you.

A Home For Her Daughter was one of the rare times that I wanted to read a book based solely on the cover. I'd not read anything by Jill Weatherholt before but that little girl with the baby chick in her hands was just SO CUTE! I couldn't resist. Didn't even really try.
And I did enjoy A Home For Her Daughter. It was such a heartwarming story of love and loss, grief and grace, family and faith, and of regret and redemption. Precocious little Riley and her desire for an animal menagerie was so adorable, and, whether author Jill Weatherholt intended it or not, she really stole the show.
Jill Weatherholt's newest book was a good read. It provided a nice break from longer novels as well as from all the bad news that seems to be dominating the world right now. The characters in A Home For Her Daughter don't have it easy by any means but it was still fun to check out of a world gone crazy and into a story with a sweet romance and a happy ending...
(I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)
Scarred by both verbal and physical abuse from her ex-husband, Janie Edmiston returns home to Whispering Slopes to build a new life with her adorable daughter Riley. Little does she know that a reunion with a childhood friend may help her overcome the hurts that she's experienced and possibly secure a future that she never dreamed possible. A Home for Her Daughter is the touching story of two people who have both suffered pain and loss but are now offered a second chance. Can Janie and Drew Brenner accept that God may have orchestrated their reunion? Will Drew's growing affection for Riley influence his actions?
Author Jill Weatherholt completely captures Janie and Drew's doubts and uncertainties and their touching story proves that faith and hope can endure through our deepest hurts. A Home for Her Daughter reminds us that fresh-starts are always possible and I recommend it to all who enjoy contemporary Christian fiction.
I received a copy of this book from the author via Celebrate Lit. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
What could be more important for any mother but a home and security for her child? That is just the situation Janie and her little girl find themselves in when she finds out she inherits land, a home, and a camp. However, the will has a catch. Her one time crush Drew also has inherited part of the land and both must work together to open the camp by July 4th or risk losing all.
Both Drew and Janie have had some very sad times. Janie is a divorcee from an abusive marriage. Drew lost both his wife and daughter and was unable to save them. Both are carrying a lot of weight on their shoulders. And both want to see little Riley have her home and security.
Watching Janie and Drew work together to open the camp opens up the possibility of second chance of love for both of them. Starting out as friends working toward a common goal, even with all the obstacles (which are plenty), shore up their happily ever after relationship.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
A Home for her Daughter is a wonderful story. It had my attention from start to finish. I loved Riley who is Janie daughter. Such a cute little girl and so smart. Janie and Drew are in Mary Applegate will. Due to the request in her Will they have to work together. Will they be able to do what Mary Applegate ask? Janie and Drew both have things to work out from their past. I love books with children in it. Riley character really bought a lot to the story. Riley was definitely my favorite character in A Home for my Daughter.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. This book review is my own opinion.
Janie Edmiston returned home to Whispering Slopes for a fresh start with her daughter and to claim a surprising inheritance. Janie is thrilled to learn she now has a home, money and a camp but there is a catch. She must work with her past crush, Drew Brenner, to get the camp back in business. If she doesn't, she will lose everything. Drew Brenner is a widower and recluse. He has to come out of his self-imposed shell in order to help his childhood friend and her daughter, Riley. Riley brings back past crippling memories but Drew knows Janie could use his help. So he agrees. I truly enjoyed this read, falling in love with each of the character. From the first page, I was grabbed into the storyline. I felt both Janie and Drew's pain and it was good to see their broken hearts find healing with God's love and with each other. Jill Weatherholt tackled issues such as abuse and loss of loved ones with sensitivity and depth. Riley's personality shone through and my heart smiled reading about her. A great story of second chance, of grace and of faith.
The story line was believable and flawlessly flowed from one character and scene to another. It was suspenseful at times. The interactions between the adult characters and the leading little girl were touching. The story line was believable and flawlessly flowed from one character and scene to another. Jill Weatherholt’s writing style is very easy to read and follow. Her descriptions of the characters and their thoughts, and the scenery made it easy for me to picture in my mind’s eye.
Throughout the story you could see and feel the changes occurring in the two main adult characters, a man and a woman. It is a great story of redemption and kindness.
I highly recommend this book!
NOTE: I received a complimentary copy from Jill Weatherholt for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review. Thoughts in my review are my own opinion.
When Janie Edmiston inherits a home and a chance at a new life after an abusive marriage, she is understandably excited.
Until she learns of the conditions of the will.
Drew Brenner has closed himself off after the loss of his wife and child. Guilt drives him to leave his rewarding career as a paramedic to become a forest ranger where he doesn’t feel responsible for human lives. Then, an old dream is resurrected when he inherits the land where he’d spent many great summers at camp.
But, in order to keep the land he must help his childhood crush, Janie, get the camp up and running in time for its fiftieth anniversary only weeks away. The trouble is; Janie is as beautiful as he remembers, and her little girl is the same age as his daughter was when she died.
This is a beautifully written story of redemption and second chances. Life throws curveballs, it’s what you do with them that counts.
