It was a scam, but then the scam had gone horribly wrong…
In this short story from the thrilling anthology MatchUp, bestselling authors Karin Slaughter and Michael Koryta—along with their popular series characters Jeffrey Tolliver and Joe Pritchard—team up for the first time ever.

A great short story a great combination love Karin slaughter books and read one book of Michael koryta which I heard turning into a film with Angelina Jolie.would like to read more of his books.and great to read Jeffery Tolliver character brilliant short story.
A great short story. I love Jeffrey Tolliver so much even though he was a man ho. I really miss him. This was a fantastic mash up. Lots of action from start to finish.
Well, the book did its job. The trail of Jeffery Toliver's series led me to pick up the first Joe Pritchard novel. This "short story" is a flashback to Jeffery's young wild Pre-Sara Linton. It is never a good sign when they have to bring out of town detectives in for a case. And in this instance, we ended up with three police forces merging.
Okay story featuring a young Tolliver. Little too long, but that's Karin Slaughter. Unless you live in North Georgia, I don't think you can appreciate the humor.
Downloaded from my public library, what a WILD ride! I'm not familiar with these characters, as I've only ever read Slaughter's Will Trent, but this was a great story.
Am glad Kindle Unlimited offered these collaborative anthologies with my membership and took the opportunity to learn about many authors unfamiliar to me. This story was one of my favorites. After reading the sample, was interested enough to purchase it for the very small price. IMO, talented writing can tell a good story as shown here in 69 pages, and I long to see more brevity. Although not a fan of cocky cop bravado & ego, & practically a football “hater”, the sample made me want to see what happened. Not disappointed. This short tale has humor and good characterization.
I read this novella because I have enjoyed the other Matchup Collection stories. I wasn't sure how I would like this one because I was unfamiliar with the main characters. Overall, I liked it. I thought the plot was solid. The setting was in an area I'm familiar with. And I will never forget the 2 feet of snow in March of 1993 in that area. I think that made the story more relatable to me. I liked this well enough to consider reading the first book in the Jeffrey Tolliver (Grant County) series.
Short Story was the final book I could read that pertained to the Grant County series by Karin Slaughter, and after the last book of that series, this book was exactly what I needed. It was a lighthearted, easy read where everything wrapped up nicely. I had never read any of Michael Koryta's books before reading Short Story, but I plan on checking out some of his titles now.
You think it's over but it isn't, it comes an unexpected part full of emotion. Add a heroe who is rather a flawed one and a unexpected villain. This series of short stories have become very nice surprises.
I listened to this on audio yesterday as an appetizer for the newest Koryta novel (An Honest Man) which publishes today, 7/25/23. This is a solid, entertaining story in which Slaughter and Koryta put their own series characters together to handle a scam that goes terribly wrong.
I didn’t know anything about either main character. The authors, both, have created really interesting characters that I will have to read more. These mash up’s are really fun reads.
This story has a lot of action in it. The characters were interesting and the descriptions of the area in which the action takes place were good. I could evasion envision the story in my mind as I read .
Good crossover story. I've never read Michael's work but this makes me want to. I miss Tolliver. This story isn't a pretty side to him, but still shows how good a cop he was.
Uma narrativa pequena, com dois crimes que se relacionam, com alguns momentos divertidos apesar das situações sérias envolvendo os personagens. Gostei.
Hadn't read anything about Joe Pritchard but I'm familiar with Karin Slaughter's Jeffrey Tolliver. For a short story, Short Story had several surprise twists that made figuring things out challenging. Interesting resolution!
I'm not familiar with the Michael Koryta character, but I do know (and mostly hate) Jeffrey Tolliver. I mean, I love that Sara loves him, and that's great for her, but his internal monlogue makes me understand how and why she broke up with him, for sure.
But of course this all takes place before Sara, while he's still an unattached manwhore, which is the genesis of this particular case, as his one night stand ends up dead and he's an obvious suspect. I do, despited my antipathy for Jeffrey, enjoy seeing the solution to the case through his eyes. He is, despite his flawas, an excellent detective.
