The Infinite City #2

Shielded Heart

Rate this book
Arthos, the Infinite City, is a place of alien wonders and indescribable beauty—and, most importantly for Samantha, it’s also halfway across the universe from her abusive ex-fiancé. She came to the city desperate for a fresh start, but she finds herself downtrodden on a world of aloof alien beings with little hope of finding her place—and a good chance of being kidnapped or killed before she can even settle in.

At least until she is saved by an irresistible alien with piercing eyes and a seductive smile.

Alkorin is the living embodiment of temptation, and he makes no effort to disguise his desire for her. But when his past threatens to drag her into a dangerous underworld, she discovers he isn’t who he claims to be. After enduring so much suffering, can she bear to take a leap of faith with this mysterious alien? Can she trust him with not only her life, but her heart?

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 fucking amazing alien stars

Y’all. Y’a,ll.
I don’t know where I found this book, and I don’t care where I found this book.
But …. But …
[insert damn gif]
I don’t think I’ve read an alien book that just flipped me over it’s knee and spanked me for all the naughty thoughts that went through my head while reading this.
Mind you, this book might not be for everyone due to the fact of some tail-kinkiness mixed with a bit of some weird tentacle-like dick . But it didn’t disturb me? Did you think it would?
Am I disturbed?! Am I twisted?
[insert fuck yes gif]
Why yes, yes I am. And I give no fucks about it.
Anyways, onto the rest, my baby Arc.
✦ If I you think I would end up traveling to another world to get away from things on Earth to be surrounded by aliens. You guessed it, FUCK YES.
✦ If you think I would fuck an alien, you are correct.
✦ If you think I would totally jump a half cyborg, half demon looking (with horns, tail, and third eye) BAMF …. You would be correct.
✦ He is sassy, he is cute, he is bae.
✦ He’s cocky, but also knows when the line is being toed.
✦ Ugh my heart.
✦ I can’t even.
✦ Just stop reading my review and read this fucking book.

This is an intergalactic mafia romance, with all the stereotypes and no surprises, so my attention wandered frequently and I was a little bored.

You’ve got your reclusive criminal MMC, Arcanthus, who takes one look at Samantha and decides it’s forever. She’s his mate. He must have her. He must protect her. He’s so possessive that, after he touches her intimately and then later grabs his best friend by his furry neck, transferring her scent from his hands to his friend’s fur, he demands that his friend go bathe because he’s the only one who can smell her.

You’ve got your wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim’rous mouse of a heroine, Samantha, a victim of domestic violence back on earth, who has escaped to Arthos to start a new life. She’s a crier, she’s weak, she’s fearful, and thank goodness Arcanthus is stalking her because she needs constant rescuing.

Then, to add an element of danger, you’ve got your twisted crime lord who discovers Arcanthus is alive after he left him for dead ten years ago and swears to finish the job.

The worst thing about this book is Samantha, who vacillates between wet panties and a wet face. She can’t decide if she’s horny or helpless, so she’s both. She’s the main reason I just never got into this, although the comic book writing and the predictability of the plot don’t help. C’mon, did every single element of this novel have to follow the well-trodden path of mafia romance tropes?

The best thing about this book is Arcanthus’s arrogant playfulness and honest boasting, and the interactions with his best friend Drakkal. These two go at each other like a couple of fishwives and it’s genuinely funny. This book would have been a lot better with less clichéd romantic drivel and more bro banter. The action sequences were well-written and exciting.

And the steam was fairly steamy.

I lied before. The actual best part of this novel was the buddy read with Izzah, CB, and Lori (who sensibly bowed out early). Thanks for including me in the shenanigans, ladies!

Arc and Drak stole the show

── .✦ Original rating: 4 ★, pre-review era.

── .✦ Re-read rating: 3 ★ because I like these authors.

When I first read the alien hero, Arcanthus, he was a shiny new toy with all sorts of new features, such as a playful, Cheshire Cat-personality, shinny natural tattoos and... other things~ 🤭

Samantha (Sam) moved to Infinity City to get away from her past, she wants a new start where she can forget about her abusive ex, but alas it's not so easy to escape the memories. Infinity City is a dangerous place for humans, especially human women who are alone. Luckily she meets Alkorin who is different to all the aliens she has met so far, her attraction to him is instant. What she doesn't realise is that them meeting was no accident.

When Alkorin's past comes back to hunt him, his lethal edge as well as that of his friends will come in handy, especially as he is determined to ensure Samantha will come to no harm.

I enjoyed the interactions/banter between Drakkal and Alkorin (although I have to say loved the banter more in book 4).

Tiny bit of skim reading did occur at one point. I do feel Sam's past could have been weaved into the story better.

Each book in the series can be comfortably read as a standalone and/or out of order.

Samantha has moved to Infinity City to get away from her abusive ex. However, it isn’t quite the escape that she expected. Infinity City is a dangerous place for humans, especially human women. But Alkorin is different to all the aliens she has met so far in Infinity City, however, although he's kind and funny he can’t quite hide his lethal edge. A lethal edge that comes in handy when his past comes back fully loaded and willing to kill anyone in their way with Sam firmly in their firing line.

I love a sci fi alien romance adventure! You get the excitement of bad guys waving their guns around alongside some sexy alien canoodling. Luckily, Tiffany Roberts has written such an adventure for us with Shielded Heart. It was an action packed romantic romp with the added benefit of having an alien hero.

I really liked Alkorin, not only because he was hot – check out the illustration at the beginning of the book! – but because he had a wicked sense of humour. Some of my favourite moments in the book was less the romance between him and Sam, but banter from the bromance with his bestie/bodyguard. Sam, the heroine, was a little more of a miss for me, I didn’t dislike her, but in comparison to Alkorin’s big personality, she faded into the background. Nevertheless, it was adorable seeing them together.

This book also opened the world up a little more and introduced us to more characters who will be hopefully be the heroes and heroines of future books. So, although the romance was perhaps not my favourite one by Roberts, I did enjoy the book as an overall addition to this series.

If you want an alien sci fi romance with plenty of action and adventure in it, this series is a good place to start. I am now eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.❤ ♡ Don't want to miss any of our posts? Subscribe to our blog by email! ♡ ❤

I've seen Tiffany Roberts' books recommended many times, but just never jumped in. Shielded Heart's blurb had me really intrigued though and it was an excellent alien romance. This duo nicely combined two likable main characters with traumatic pasts falling in love with danger/suspense from a multi-planet crime ring. Samantha (h) is maybe not going to be everyone's favorite heroine with her timidness and vulnerability, but the fact she was still putting herself out there in uncomfortable and new ways, trying to move on, really captured my heart. Alkorin/Arc (H) was a nice foil to Sam with his capable handling/fighting, charisma and arrogance, but sweet-to-her ways. Their story is told in third person POV, multi-POV. No ow/om drama, neither were virgins (H was promiscuous before her but it had been a while; h had only been with her past abuser), bc is discussed.

While the story does start off slower as Alkorin/Arc sees Sam and decides he wants her, then injects himself into her new life, once the action picks up, it goes full throttle. There are some violent fight scenes as the danger manifests. There's also nicely done humor, sweet moments, steamy times (our H does have alien equipment and I hadn't read any like it personally), and time for side characters to shine (who some already have their own books). There is a short jump ahead epilogue with their HEA, but I'm sure it's likely this couple will make appearances in other books. I'm happy I finally gave this author duo a go and I'll be looking at more of their backlog.

Arc is such the arrogant dick but it somehow lovable. He and Drakkal have that poking at each other rapport that so many human men have, and it’s fun. Sam is a sweetie and way more forgiving than I myself would be, but still tries in her own way to protect herself. The infinite city is a dark AF world and Arc is her protector. I like that she finds her inner strength with his help and that he opens up more.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: discussion of SA, attempted SA, repeated threats of trafficking and SA, discussion of domestic violence, slavery, gladiatorial fights (historical), stalking, dubcon (inebriated, another instance of being woken up through touching), grief for death of parent, violence, choking, gun violence, gore and dismemberment, explosion, death, trauma responses/flashbacks, speciesism, trampling by crowd

"I’m about to make a deal with the devil…and I’ve never wanted anything more."

I'll say this now- the cover? love it

description

The story? It has a lot of potential, and I like the set up and premise, but the characters were a little off for me.

So this story picks up where the last one, with our forger Alkorin aka Arcanthus, going about his buisness after the mess he was left with in the first book. But something is off with him. He is being moody and withdrawn- and it's all because, and in his words, he "wants a Terran, a female Terran".

So what does he do? He starts looking in the database to find one- and he does. He finds our h, Samantha, who is new to the Infinite City and quite out of her element. No only is she painfully shy, she is also terrified of her new neighbor, and she's afraid of the dangers lurking around every corner of her new home. But a 'chance' meeting with a handsome sedhi might put them both in more danger than they can handle.

spoiler rant:

So, my biggest problem with the book- as I stated Arcanthus wanted a Terran female- so he just went out and got himself one. No, he didn't say he wanted somebody to be in a relationship with, not somebody to fall in love with.... He just wanted a Terran of his own, and it didn't really matter who- as long as she was human, pretty, and young I guess. Yeah, he just selects her out of a line up.
But hey, In the FIRST search he finds one! Also, she just so happens so be his mate- lucky that.

description

Then he proceeds to stalk her all the while thinking "mine, mine, mine"
Sam even calls this behavior out later by saying

"She waited for the flare of anger that should’ve risen in her gut; Arcanthus had selected Sam from her identification file, stalked her, lied to her, and sent some of his men to keep an eye on her. None of that was okay, was it? None of that was right. And yet…she wasn’t upset, wasn’t angry, wasn’t scared."

Well if she's not upset I shouldn't be right? I guess its just this kind of behavior is only acceptable because she finds him hot...If he was gross she'd be running the other way. I keep thinking this book should be called "I Fell For My Stalker."

description

There were other things that bothered me, but that was the main one.

I did like the story though, so if your interested in a quick steamy sci-fi its on kindle unlimited rn- so I'd suggest to read it if you liked the first one.

did-not-finish

I had high hopes for this but I couldn't bring myself to finish it (50%).

Like many others with low ratings, the lack of character depth or development with Samantha was the primary gripe where this lost me. If that had been handled a bit better, I would have at least finished the book and it could have easily been 3 or 4 star book.

Female MC Samantha is really boring and aggravatingly fragile, young, naive, and continually harassed and manipulated. She's rescued every single time she's on the page and despite this new relationship being absolutely terrible for her, she keeps giving in to it anyway and it really makes no sense. It sounds like she might be only 21 whereas the alien dude is easily much older. The relationship is just hella unhealthy for her all around and I couldn't stand to read anymore. Pretty bummed about it because I did enjoy many of the other characters and the setting.

DNF at 23%. I was really excited to read this book because of the commissioned art on the author’s site. Arc is hot, and there’s no denying that. But all the heroine does is thirsting over the alien while constantly being rescued. Unfortunately, I’m not interested enough to continue.

i only picked this up because i saw the author had commissioned artwork of the ML, and i like when books have visuals of alien characters (otherwise, my imagination is woefully inadequate when it comes to picturing them).

that said, this was not worth the time or effort.

the FL is a constant damsel in distress—apparently she's so irresistible that every alien dude in a five mile radius is intent on raping her, and so of course the ML has to step in and save her. and then, also of course, the second she sees the ML, her panties are wet, she "can't stop herself" from smelling him (???), she's gasping every time he touches her, her voice is all breathy, she's clinging to him... you get the point.

i'm not saying that abuse survivors all have to be timid and whatnot, but given the way the FL acts so skittish about everything else, you would think she wouldn't jump on this random dude. yeah, he saved her, but he's still a stranger, and the moment she met him she became all hot and bothered. it's embarrassing.

also: WHY would they let a human come to this planet if it's overrun with freaks that can't control their baser urges? it's an issue that's mentioned in the book too, but then it's brushed off by the ML saying something like, "oh, who knows what our silly government is thinking, hyuk hyuk." like. huh??

as for the ML, i know he's some people's cup of tea, but he's certainly not mine. to be fair, i don't mind obsessive MLs... when they're not written in the absolutely cringiest way possible like this one was.

this dude becomes horny the second he sees the FL's intergalactic passport photo, and from that moment on he does not go one chapter without mentioning his "straining cock." i get that this is a fated mate situation, so he won't be falling in love with her the good old fashioned way, but this is a bit much. he just comes across as sleazy and weird, and the whole time the FL is mooning over him. i get the sense that this will be a relationship based on sex rather than romance, which just isn't my jam.

also: the characters say each other's names way too often. it's unnatural.

It was okay. I remember liking and being more intrigued by the hero in the previous book. Even so, he was way more interesting in this book than the heroine. The heroine didn't seem fully developed to me, and she was kind of boring. She was a woman healing from abuse. That sums her up; other descriptors were minor or added or to provide another aspect, but they weren't strong or impactful to me. "A woman healing from abuse moves to new planet and falls in love with an alien" I also hate to say this, but there was too much sex in this book vs character development. I skimmed it after a while. Eh. Not sure if I'll read the next book or not.

I haven’t been enjoying my current reads, it’s been hard to find a good rhythm in reading this month. But I have come to realize there’s a perfect remedy for that: alien smut.

Yeah, I love it. It’s fun. It’s the only (sub)genre that can make me enjoy tropes I typically dislike.

The Fun

Only alien smut can make me enjoy insta-lust and fated mates. I’m actually reading a fantasy book right now with both tropes and it’s such an eyeroll, which is ironic considering how I was clamoring for it in this one. I was practically foaming out the mouth for it! Tiffany Roberts’ writing simply sells it. It made me like all the tropes I typically dislike. I was here for the instant attraction, for the every uttered "mate," and for our leads falling quickly for one another.

The Damsel in Distress

Our co-lead Samantha finds herself in many precarious situations many times, and typically in need of rescuing. Maybe feminism just left my body, but I was here for it. Gimme the damsel in distress trope, I don’t care! Once again, Roberts sells it so well. I was happy every time Sam needed rescuing, ha!

The Romance

I adored Samantha and Alk’s romance. Their attraction is instant, they chemistry electric, and their love story beautiful. I was here for it from start to end.

Ready for the Sequel?

I am really satisfied with how this one ended. I can imagine what comes next but truthfully, I feel content to end it here. I don't need the sequel so I can’t say I’m jumping to read it any time soon. However, if another reading slump approaches, I know the exact title I’ll be picking up to help me out.

Aliens, I Love You

Last year I was a mere naive girl who turned her nose up at thoughts of blue aliens with tails, truly, ew. I blame my former hate towards Avatar the movie (which ironically I now love…guess why!). But I’m a new girl now. Give me all the alien romances and smut; I am 100% here for it.

Very sweet ,decent spice... Arcanthus is just 🥵
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎧 Single Narration ( done well)
2.5🌶🌶

The chemistry between Arcantus and Samantha is fantastic—full of love and passion. There’s a nice touch of possessiveness, and it was wonderful to see Samantha grow.

◇ delicate fmc with trauma from previous abuse
◇ rake-ish criminal mmc
◇ top banter between the mmc and his bestie
◇ fun use of tail
◇ horn handlebars
◇ fancy peen ( splits into 4/ nodules & cock pocket)

We had this sweet, nurturing female character who was the total opposite of our arrogant and cocky Arc. It was refreshing to read about someone who started off so shy and gentle but eventually became confident in herself and her love.

I really enjoyed Arc's cleverness and playful banter in the first Infinite City book, and this one definitely kept that vibe going.

The sibling rivalry between Arc and Drakkal is just too funny! Their bickering had me laughing out loud, I looked forward to their scenes together.

⭐️Highlights⭐️

Arcanthus’s brows fell. “It’s not going to bite you, Samantha.” “It-It’s moving! It’s split!” She slapped a hand over her mouth, leaving her voice muffled when she asked, “Did I break it?” “It’s not broken!”

Her laughter died and her breath hitched. “Are…are you…stuck?” “Yes. Yes, I am. Much as I’d prefer to tell you it’s normal, I’ve never had this happen before—not for this long, anyway. My body seems rather covetous of you.”

“I find myself torn between my desire to know more about you and the open invitation to talk about myself. You’re feeding into an already dangerously large ego, Samantha.”

So, I have an apology to make to this series. I first read Silent Lucidity (book 1) back at the start of March when I stated on my review that I'd be continuing with this series soon. I have had Shielded Heart downloaded on my kindle for MONTHS, and still I didn't read it. This book was an easy 5 stars, like how?! And I'm absolutely kicking myself for not reading it sooner! So I'm sorry to the Infinite City series, I will learn from my mistake!

So Shielded Heart was an absolute dream to read, we expanded on the world we were introduced to in book 1, and the world building was much easier to understand.

I adored the characters of Sam and Arc, they were amazing and right from the start, they had me giggling to myself. The book did sort of stall in the middle however the action in the last 20% made up for it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to read Vengeful Heart 😝

I was expecting a little more plot but I think maybe cause I was working while reading this I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought. The spice was alright but I never fell too hard for the characters. Not an awesome reread, instead go back to IPB. Cute read though, liked the male characters sarcasm and the opportunity for a inner circle group of friends with the FMC.

"JESUS this book is so fricking good it's so......oh...wait, it's over? But waitwait it can't be over yet awwwwww."

-Actual real time quote from 11 minutes ago.

As with the ending of all Tiffany Roberts books,
Wah.
The Infinite City universe has officially drawn me in and I am in no way, shape or form, ready to peace out from this joint.
But, I've found that to be the case in almost all the world's of Robert's wonderful books I've had the fortune to read(which is every book now so YAY).

So what keeps bringing me back you might ask? (or you might not but whatevs, you get to hear why anyway.)

The worlds: Now we've gone from the bottom of an alien ocean, an Earth that looks alot like what I imagined the dustbowl appeared like, an island of mythical rejects, a harem-encouraged planet, and now to the infinite city Arthos. Seriously, the world building, is amazing. Not only is it detailed, but it's completely it's own entity (meaning its not Like other worlds you've seen or heard about). Im so impressed with Arthos; how its seemingly two separate cities, one of light, one of neon and dark below. I would totally be down to catch the next shuttle there...... aside from all the horrible aliens and Terran/human trafficking and slavery....Okay..maybe I'll catch the...next shuttle to Arthos.

The Aliens & Romance:
Ma. Now listen here.
I can totally get down with some vanilla romance. It's like a nice cup of tea in the morning. But Sometimes tea just isn't gonna cut it. Do your cry? Say "whats wrong with me why do I need tails and horns?"
Nah Boo. Embrace it.
Sometimes you need that Trenty Mocha Fudge BrownieBatter Sprinkle Sugar bomb to fit your bill. In short: love. but with aliens. It's weird, it's strange, sometime its WAITWuuut.., but hot damn if im not addicted to it. We met Arcanthus in the last story, and I was totally on board and intrigued. He was one of those guys you just want to demand gets a HEA; whether that includes pleading letters to the author or full blown picket lines outside their residence, eh, it's up to you. He's got three eyes, horns, a tail, and a...coughcough...lets call it a retractable area down low, if ya get what I mean. All in all he hits all my checkpoints. But on top of that, he's a freakin sweet guy. He want's to feel that connection, and he want's to build up his mate. Which brings me to, Sam.
Samantha was a close call for me. I got nervous when we played up the abuse backround, ran to alien planet, met an alien, then she's getting self defence training, but i think they stayed really true to Sam's character. She was scared, scarred and alone in a strange world having to completely start a new life. I liked how she kept more or less to herself and GREW into the person she was meant to be, RATHER than stumbling into the H falling to her knees and becoming his love slave (which after years of abuse COME ON no they wouldnt). I've read way to many romances that excuse and essentially forget the abuse, but this one I think kept Sam true to her timid nature and I ended up really enjoying her growth. And together. BOOM POW CHICKA WOW. Check them steamy fireworks. Hells yeah. It was steamy, dreamy and ooooh so good.

Worlds. Aliens. Romance. And a story I don't feel like I've read a million times before and can predict where everything is going.
Hell yeah.

So, where am i. What year is it. Am i okay.
Short answer?
Nope.

But just like I do after ending the rest of the TR books, it's time to be hitten the ole dusty trail. But I'll certainly be back.

AND FOR DRAKKAL'S BOOK NO LESS YASSSSSSSSS

"You show me everyday, in everything you do. Every time you look at me. Every little touch, every smile, every moment. As jealous as I become when other males look at you, I know you are mine, just as I know I am yours" --he moved his hand down, settling it over her heart-- " here. There is much in this universe that we made out, Samantha, but you and me? We are one of the few certainties."

This was so good!
I loved getting to know more about Arcanthus(aka Alkorin)
This book had slightly less dark themes.
Sam was abused by someone on earth and she has some lingering fears and doubts because of that. But we never read any of the abuse on page and she doesn’t describe much of it to Arc.
There was also slightly less violence than the first book. There were little fights here and there throughout but only one big fight and it seemed far less complex than when Tenthil fought the acolytes and Master in the first book.

I really loved all the humor and playfulness that Arc brought to this book. And his relationship with Drakkal was really entertaining to read.

And the Sex!
Once again we have an alien 🐓. This time much different than anything I’ve ever read before. I won’t spoil That surprise this time. You’ll just have to read and find out.
I really enjoyed the passion and care that Arc took to get Sam to see the pleasure that’s possible between them.
It was super hot reading how much they enjoyed each other’s bodies.

And Sam! She turns out to be such a badass! Completely overcoming her fears and using her past trauma to fuel her strength. I fucking love when FMCs do that. It’s so satisfying.

I really enjoyed reading this and I can’t wait to see who next. I think it’s Drakkal and I’m excited to see who catches his eye.

And I thought the first one was great!💖

This second novel of the Infinite city was absolutely fabulous ☺ The authors delivered yet again! High action s i-fi, hot 🔥passionate romance and added to the mix this time the best witty banter between all characters. I found myself laughing out loud numerous times so worth reading! Alkorin/Arcanthus from the first novel was a terrific male lead. Charming, sexy in a demony kind of way and so so witty. A male hiding from his past and thrust back into actually living when he sees a human woman named Samantha. He recognizes her as his mate almost right away. He's a warrior, a tech wizard and a male who truly cares for those he considers his. Sam, was also running from her past, an abusive ex. She was bent a bit bruised but absolutely not broken! Together these two teach each other and those around them how to heal and become stronger than they ever thought possible. I love the secondary cast of characters and I'm looking forward to a sexy Drakkal's story that's coming up next. Once again I'm left oddly satisfied and a bit on the edge of my seat with anticipation for the next in the series.💖😍

I need me one of those...

Oh My Gosh! Shielded Heart was phenomenal! I have now decided, with I’m sure at least a dozen other women, that I need an Arcanthus of my own! He was just the right amount of arrogant and egotistical as to not be annoying! And that body... THAT TAIL! Yes please! And Sam had enough backbone for me to really care for and like her! She wasn’t some simpering nitwit that needed saving at all times(we all need a bit of saving when we are out of our element)! She held her own in the end and was a Bad-A-Shutyomouth!

Lastly,I really felt this quote from Drakkal about love, it’s so true :
“You embrace it. Embrace her. Take it for what it is. There’s no telling when the universe might decide to take it away.”

I can’t wait to hear Drakkal’s story as one can tell he has loved and lost.

"It's a book about banging an alien." At the 25% mark, that was the review I was pretty confident I was going to give with a three star rating attached. The summary is a very good indicator of how schlocky and cheesy the story is going to be--the goal is to get these two characters to bang and that is it. There is no sense in giving this story an in-depth critique. It has its goal and it meets it.

However, I ended up bumping the story down to two-stars because around 66% I wasn't motivated to keep reading (I did, but I was skimming). The characters had already hooked up, any relationship problems that could be explored were glossed over, and the villain was a one-dimensional shadowy figure that I didn't care about. The story could have ended at the two-third point and I would have been satisfied.
