World War II historical novel. A young Nebraska farm boy graduates from Broken Bow High School and is taken to Germany by his father to the Berlin Olympics in 1936; he enrolls in medical school and, after a couple of years, is drafted into Hitler's army when he refuses to join the Nazi Party.
After a really slow start to the book (where I almost stopped reading it), the story gets better and a little exciting, but then the end is very rushed and seems that the author just wanted to finish the book ASAP. The book is a bit disappointing and the potential for a great story is let down by poor writing, even poorer editing and some very bad mistakes regarding historical accuracy. Someone writing historical fiction should have at least a decent knowledge of the times they are writing about and the dates got so bugled in the end by the author that it made for some frustrating reading. Given a 2 star just because the story had potential.
Based upon a true story, this is a composite story of several hundred men and women caught on the wrong side of the war when the United States entered World War II.
