Dale wanted to do more than survive as a dungeon core. His experience with the gods made it clear that with power, he could do as he pleased, and without it, he was simply a toy of the powerful. Unfortunately, it isn't just the gods who have plans for the Traveling Dungeon. Follow Dale as he tries to create his own little world, study magic, enchant devices and create challenges for the gods and an [Arch-Mage]. All while trying to keep Miss Blue-Box happy. From The Spire of the West to the Orcs of the South, to a discovery that will rock the world, Dale can't help but shove his stone where it doesn't belong.
I'll start by saying I did enjoy the book. It was well written and it picks up from where book 1 finished, which was nice.
I had 2 issues with this go around: 1 - there was a lot of explanations that made sense only if you knew what the author was talking about. Great dungeon books use what the reader knows to paint the mental picture of what's happening. There's too many "novel" concepts here dealing with strictly spacial descriptions, which in turn make this a very hard book to follow in one's mind-eye 2 - there was no overall crisis that related to the main character. We therefore end up with a whole book that uses exposition to get us to book 3, where hopefully (seems like it anyway) something will happen.
With all that being said, will read the next book as I find the concepts explored here to be quite entertaining.
Story was okay, but the plot and overall writing felt unfocused and jumbled. Also this really needs an editor. As a side note, I was positively surprised by the small philosophical passages. Little more than the general musings of our main character, thinking back to his human life, it was deeper than I would've thought. Props for that.
This series reminds me how much I like the more simple Dungeon core books. Reminds me a lot of Dungeon Born before it got really complicated and spent more time about a greater plot than the dungeon.
That ending though O_O you can't end it like that.
I'm not enjoying this as much as I remember liking the first. There is also stats, and the regular checking of them.
I finished the book, but the spark that was there that made me want to read book two was absent.
Maybe it's some biological problem that is affecting my dopamine receptors? Maybe the writing fell in quality? I don't know. I will just give this a neutral rating as I didn't dislike it, I just didn't feel anything while reading.
The main issue is the lack of a focused cohesive story to pull you along. This just meanders about with no direction leaving you bored and uninterested. Also the characters are flat and unengaging. The gods are boring and one dimensional and Dender is the only one who does anything leaving you just not caring about the rest. This just feels like a big mess of "and then this happened" over and over again.
This story was a fun non-stop ride. I kind of wish the Mr would make so.e friends. The gods seem to be more like benevolent bosses and clients than anything, but ultimately this is still a fun read. My only complaint is the ending which is great but has the usual problem that all good stories have. Hint rhymes with Biff Sanger...
Good book otherwise. This is the second time reading this series. Didn't review it last time, and read it on KU which doesn't track which books you've read apparently. Second time around was just as good as the first. Looking forward to the next. (Bought the books this time... Just in case)
All the author needed to do was stop a few paragraphs early. Leave us with the next adventure looming not begun. Sadly this novel is incredibly interesting yet hard to recommend due to its ending. As a wise man said, "The ending is paramount". This ending is needlessly baiting. I would want the next book without this horrible cliffhanger.
Dale grows and builds new challenges. In the end he learns something astonishing. And then the story slams to a stop with a cliff hanger. There are some typos but the story was very enjoyable. Have fun!
I quite like the world building in this one. It was interesting to see the new cultures and biologies of the new races. I also continue to like the portrayal of the gradual back and forth tug of gods and their donations. I'm looking forward to more.
The second book of our dimensionally-oriented dungeon core adventures.
There's less of a urgency in terms of crisis for the dungeon in this one, and more of an adjustment phase. There's a bit of pantheon shenanigans, but it's mostly a build-up phase.
Book 2 is wonderful! Unlike other reviewers, I think the ending was absolutely perfect. It makes me want to read the upcoming 3rd book instead of potentially forgetting about the series. I definitely recommend this book.
Another fun entry in a weird world with weird gods. The ending of this one left me with many questions that I look forward to having answered in book 3!!
Kept reading and reading, didn't even notice that it was done until I got to the last chapter. And ooooh boy was it a doozy!! Great story, can't wait for more.
I really hope to see more! Great magic techno babble! Good characters, good plot, great setting and interesting races. One of the best dungeon core stories.
