Culture and Everyday Life provides students with a comprehensive overview of theoretical models, issues and examples of contemporary cultural practice.

Bennett begins by summarising and situating - in everyday settings - the key theoretical models applied in the study of existing cultural practices. This entails a systematic study of how academic thinking about mass culture has changed, from critical accounts of early mass cultural theorists to radical postmodernist critiques of mass cultural accounts and to ′the cultural turn′, which explored how various social identities are culturally constructed.

Following this are themed chapters that cover a particular aspect of late modern culture, such as media, music, fashion, tourism and counter-cultural ideologies and movements. In each case a comprehensive literature review is provided and its theoretical and empirical relevance to our understanding of the relationship between culture and everyday life in contemporary society is explained.

Lucid, meticulous and illustrated with a host of examples, this is a superb text for teaching and research in the Sociology of Culture and Cultural Studies.

مطالعه و بررسی جامعی از نظریات و آرای جامعه شناسان و متفکران درباره زندگی روزمره و جایگاه آن در عرصه ی مبسوط فرهنگ.
نویسنده به خوبی با ارجاعات مناسب و متعدد به نویسندگان مختلف، مطالب هر فصل را به پیش برده و در پایان آن را به جمع بندی برساند. و در دو فصل آخر نیز به بررسی موردی اینترنت، مد و رسانه ها و مجلات و .. می پردازد.
اما برای کسانی که پیش زمینه ای در مورد موضوع ندارند، کتاب تا حدودی دشوار پیش می رود(بخصوص در ابتدای کتاب به نظر مترجم کم می آورد و نیز اعلام بسیار مختصر پایانی و نبود لیست برابرنهادِ واژگان تخصصی به شدت احساس می شود). بنابراین پیشنهاد می شود که در ابتدا کتابی به همین نام از اینگلیس خوانده شود تا ذهنیت خوبی از موضوع حاصل شود.

Enjoyed the first half of this book a lot more than the second half, some analysis feels a little bit outdated but I think in reading an almost 20-year-old analysis of culture that's to be expected. In searching for thorough examinations of everyday life and how this is fashioned by media, this book is interesting but lacks a unified framework (which is almost ironically adherent to the discussion of a postmodern fragmented self). However, I think much of this book felt like fragments of other theorists woven together to create a messy tapestry of pre-existing ideas rather than something revelatory. I guess I will simply have to continue my search elsewhere for an adequate analysis of the everyday.

کتاب اندی بنت، گزارشی تاریخی است از نحوه‌ی شکل‌گیری مدل‌ها و نظریات مطالعات فرهنگی با تاکید بر حوزه‌ی زندگی روزمره. زندگی روزمره رویکرد متاخری است که به بررسی جامعه در دوره‌ي سرمایه‌داری پسین می‌پردازد، و دیدگاه‌های خوشبینانه‌تری در مقابل نظریه پردازان نومارکسیست مانند فرانکفورتی‌ها به مقوله‌ی مصرف دارد. این نظریه‌پردازان استدلال می‌کنند توسعه‌ی روند‌های کالایی‌سازی و روابط سرمایه‌داری به انسان‌های امروزین این اختیار و امکان را داده است که از طریق انتخاب و معنابخشیدن به کالاهای مصرفی، هویت‌های تاملی‌تری را برای خود اختیار کنند. و برهمین مبنا هویت‌های امروزین ارتباط کمتری با ویژگی‌های طبقاتی دارد.
کتاب به صورت خلاصه نحوه تغییر و دگردیسی نظریات فرهنگ توده‌ای را شرح می‌دهد و نشان می‌دهد چطور زندگی روزمره می‌تواند پیچیدگی‌های بیشتری از جوامع سرمایه‌داری پسین را شرح دهد. من نسخه اصلی کتاب را ندیده‌ام اما ترجمه به نظرم روان و قابل فهم‌رسید.
