This is the final book in the Academy of Elemental Magic series. President Dietrich is dead, but that doesn’t mean Avaline and her men are out of the woods yet. Another dark group is in play, and they want Ava. They want to use her power to find the rest of the vox mages.
This book was a bit of a let down. Actually, the entire series was. In each book, there’s this build up to something huge, and poof! It’s all resolved in a few paragraphs. I do like the premise and wish the author would have spent a bit more time and effort on the ending. I admit that the part where Ava reaches out to other vox mages and tells them they’re safe, and then a young brother and sister show up, is pretty moving. Why not spend a bit of time there. Let the reader wallow in those feelings for a bit? But nope.
There’s one ménage scene, and it felt like the author didn’t really know how to write it, so just decided to get it over with as quickly as possible. Yet another scene that was cut short. Perhaps the author just needs more experience. Some of the areas that were very interesting were the areas that dealt with mage politics and some of the classes with the professors. It was interesting to read about them actually teaching and explaining how to use magic to Ava.
I do feel a bit let down with the series ending. One thing I base my ratings on, is how do I feel when I finish a book or a series? I’m giving this book, and the series as a whole, 3 stars. Which for me is just average. I didn’t hate the book/series. But I didn’t love it either. I would say that if you have a bunch of other book on your reading list, you might want to tackle them first. These do read pretty fast, so if you just need a break between something else you’re reading, this would be a good way to do that.
