Based on Kurt Bennett's popular-ish blog God Running, Love Like Jesus begins with the story of how after a life of regular church attendance and Bible study, Bennett was challenged by a pastor to study Jesus. That led to an obsessive seven-year deep dive. After pouring over Jesus' every interaction with another human being, he realized he was doing a much better job of studying Jesus' words than he was following Jesus' words and example. The honest and fearless revelations of Bennett's own moral failures affirm he wrote this book for himself as much as for others.
Love Like Jesus examines a variety of stories, examples, and research,
-Specific examples of how Jesus communicated God's love to others.-How Jesus demonstrated all five of Gary Chapman's love languages (and how you can too).-The story of how Billy Graham extended Christ's extraordinary love and grace toward a man who misrepresented Jesus to millions.
-How to respond to critics the way Jesus did.-How to love unlovable people the way Jesus did.-How to survive a life of loving like Jesus (or how not to become a Christian doormat).-How Jesus didn't love everyone the same (and why you shouldn't either).-How Jesus guarded his heart by taking care of himself--he even napped--and why you should do the same.-How Jesus loved his betrayer Judas, even to the very end.
With genuine unfiltered honesty, Love Like Jesus shows you how to live a life according to God's definition of A life of loving God well, and loving the people around you well too.
After attending church and studying the Bible for most of my adult life someone challenged me in a church parking lot. That confrontation led to an obsession. I became consumed with researching every single interpersonal encounter Jesus had with anyone, and everyone. It took me seven years but beginning with Matthew 1:1, I examined every detail of Jesus' life and words in the most intensive careful meticulous way I could.
What I found changed my life.
And what I found I shared in the book Love Like Jesus: How Jesus Loved People (and how you can love like Jesus)
What I really enjoyed about reading this book, above and beyond the practical nature of how to learn and “Love Like Jesus” is that Kurt seems to be just like me. He’s not someone who went to seminary and has multiple theological degrees. He’s just a guy, going through life, devoting his time to learning about Jesus and trusting in God to guide him and his life. I definitely can relate to the stories and experiences in the book. And, next time I’m in the Portland area, I’m going to drop Kurt an email and take him up on his offer for coffee. You’ve inspired me, Kurt. Thank you!
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book, as I had never heard of the author, but the topic was what I was looking for. Well written, easy to read, lots of stories, and thought provoking. It’s well worth adding to your library.
This is a book that resonates deeply because it deals with following Jesus in day-to-day life: in marriage, friendships, and in my relationship with God and myself. For me, it is the heart of Jesus' message, and what it truly means to follow Him.
I try to use what I have learned in this book as I deal with the challenges of my marriage, friendships, and co-workers. When I truly put God first and come to relationships with love in my heart, everything changes for the better. And when I fail, as I inevitably do, I am reminded in this book that Jesus loves me through all of it.
The book calls us to step up and give our all to Christ as we explore the many examples of Jesus loving those around him--often in surprising, paradoxical ways. I very much enjoyed seeing how people learn to love like Jesus through the numerous personal anecdotes and the stories of famous people who are also learning and growing. Highly recommended.
As a fellow sufferer from social clumsiness, I appreciate Kurt's insights and practical suggestions to avoid stepping on the favorite toes of other people. I know this is true because my friends nicknamed me "Sheldon." To find practical tips to avoid hurting others (and having to eat crow, with its many vitamins, afterward) was a wonderful godsend. I plan to follow Kurt's blog--God Running--in the future, also.
