Designed for Contemporary Moral Problems courses, Bonevac's Today's Moral Issues is unique in providing theoretical readings related to the contemporary issues readings that follow -- students connect theory and practice, thereby making the theory interesting and relevant. In addition to providing readings on contemporary topics, the book lends historical perspective to current moral issues with its unique inclusion of classic selections by philosophers such as Aristotle, Mill, Kant, and Locke.
Written by University of Texas at Austin professor Daniel Bonevac, this is a book that draws upon philosophical ideas by such noted philosophers Locke and Aristotle. It's a bit of a tough read as it is meant to be a course study book, but it is a good read nonetheless.
This was the only textbook we used in my ethics & health care class, but it was a fantastic source for us. In fact, one of my co-workers (a doctor) ended up asking if he could keep it as reading material for his spare time, that's how well put together this book was.
Bonevac collects several key speeches & papers in this volume, but he doesn't stop there. Bonevac also tries to give the reader a sense of philosophy in general by including pieces by historical greats such as Kant, Mill, & Aquinas. Potential buyers should be aware that some of the pieces in the book aren't the easiest to read & some might need a dictionary close by for some of the words used in the book. (Mostly legal terms.)
Overall this is a fantastic book to study from & really does a fantastic job of outlining several key topics!
