Unfocused for Beginners

I have read two other books in the crafting series by this author, and I found this one to be a departure from what were relatively good craft books on crocheting and cricuting. I didn't find this book to be well done at all, from what's included in the organization.

This book is supposed to be for beginners who are interested in quilting, but the actual number of pages dedicated to teaching you how to quilt is surprisingly few. Much book space—and there are only 92 pages in the PDF I received as an ARC—is dedicated to the history of quilting, quilts around the world, benefits of quilting, examples of types of quilts, what the author calls quilting hacks, and even a somewhat nonsensical chapter on opening a quilting store—that seems like a bit of a reach for a book about quilting for beginners. So with all this other information, only a few chapters are dedicated to actually getting a new quilter up and running. I found the chapter specifically about how to do the quilting by machine or by hand to be far too sparse for the beginner to actually be able to do anything.

The book has organizational issues as well. In a book that is supposed to be hands-on for beginners like the other book in this series are. The author should minimize extraneous information that is not actionable or doable. If the author feels a need to include that information, it should all be grouped together. For instance, in this book, several introductory chapters (though interesting) really had nothing to do with making a quilt (the first three chapters on the history of quilting, the benefits of quilting, and quilts around the world). Fine, have those chapters if you want, but be sure to include ALL the extra information in one spot. But after the actual chapter that tells you how to quilt came a chapter on different types of quilts—lots of pictures with a line or two about the type of quilt (though I would disagree that they were all actual quilt types). That should have been put with the extra info. The chapter that she calls “quilting hacks” is actually a chapter that is just about choosing fabrics. The author should have called it what it is and put with some of the information-you-need-to-know chapters. Two chapters had overlap, too, one on equipment and one on tools. These chapters could have easily been combined and condensed.

All in all, especially compared to the two other books I’ve read in the series, I was disappointed in the unfocused information in this book. If you are interested in learning how to quilt, there are far better books out there for you to choose from.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I received a free electronic copy of this how-to book from the author, Freya Gates. Thank you for sharing your hard work with me. I read this work of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am excited to share news of this book with my great-nieces and nephews. Quilting is a wonderful way to express your creativity - it can be as wild as your imagination or a regimented project that expresses you, as well.

Whether you are an eager new quilter or just coming back after a break from quilting, this book is one to have around. Hints that you may not have known or have just forgotten are at your fingertips, as are more complex problems answered simply, easily understood. This break from real life with Coronavirus shutting us in is a perfect time to get out that fabric stash and get to work on something simple to share with the kids or that complex project you have been putting off for years because your time is limited and this job needs your full attention.

A good introduction but lacking schemas for the real beginner. As a very occasional sewer I would have loved a few schematic presentations of stiches. And as a non-American I would have preferred an international unit’s measures conversion (cm instead of inch). But I did enjoy the interesting presentation of the art and some explanations about the different types of quilting. I learned and was inspired for my next projects.

This is not really a how-to quilt, but more a history and the tools needed. There are not patterns or how-tos in this book other than pictures of completed projects. Not really helpful other than what I should or should not buy. I would not buy this book for a how to

The Art of Quilting

This is a very informative book on quilting. I liked the detailed information on the history of quilting, the different types of quilts, and the steps of how to quilt by machine or by hand. I recommend this book for those interested in this type of craft. This is my voluntary and honest review.

A comprehensive guide

This book is more a comprehensive guide about what's basically needed to quilt. Also an overview of different types of quilts, which is quite interesting.
I was disappointed not finding patterns or instructions. Therefore a 3 1/2 stars instead of higher

This book was a good guide to use for beginners in quilting. It was interesting and instructional and had easy to follow steps as you get ready to quilt.

nothing new for me

I read this book, but I could have stopped at first page. I’ve been quilting for over 45 years. I started out hand quilting, then moved on to machine. I really didn’t gain any new information here.
