Margaret must test her loyalty and courage when a wounded prisoner of war is brought into her Pennsylvania home in this novel of the Revolutionary era.
Much like Ann Ridnaldi & Collier of writing of the American Revolutionary War. This book deals w/the issues of family and friends that Are German in Pennslyvania and their dealings w/the German Hessian Troops who were brought in by the British because of the unpopularity of the War w/the common British citizen and the House of Lords/Commons. I enjoyed the book even more because my family had just recently came from Germany and had settled in PA. So much of what took place in the book was similar to what my ancestors had went through of just having gotten off the boat. Great read.
Wonderful YA historical novel about a Hessian mercenary who becomes a prisoner of war and is sent to help on an American farm. These boys and young men were essentially slaves, often captured by guile by their rulers and sent off to fight without their consent to enrich the rulers.
Okay, the cover looks kind of boring, considering the book art it's competing against, like something from the early 80s. That's okay, though, because it's a very well-constructed story about timeless conflicts: state against state, family against family, heart against head. The history is very well researched and colorfully presented. Some of the "serious" issues have to do with the deplorable conditions in the military "hospitals" of the time, something also addressed in Sophia's War: A Tale of the Revolution, but here we get an extra shot of real romance. One of my young friends was positively flushed with the excitement of the developing relationship between Margaret and the young soldier billeted with her family. Very entertaining choice for a young audience!
American Revolution, Pennsylvania. Margaret doesn't know what to think about the war. No one seems to agree. When her brother joins the fighting and is injured, Margaret and her mother, against the wishes of her father, go to the field hospital to care for him. While there, Margaret meets a young Hessian soldier Christian and cares for him too. Christian and Margaret's brother and both brought back to the Volperts farm and it is while listening to them talk that Margaret learns to see both sides of the conflict.
In this BOOK and its pretty sad but Margaret end up falling for Hessian soilder who made her own brother get wounded and rounds up getting sick :( but in the beginning her feelings get mixed up for him and she not sure of wether he has the same feelings? thie kind of people that would like this book is people who enjoy the wars between the british and Colonist! also love mixed in with it. you can find this book in a historical fiction basket in either Ms.Woodard or Ms.Lacey's libary!
Romance meets history once again in my reviews. A nice comparision to VITORIA AND THE VISCOUNT, this book follows a forbbiden love through the hardships of war and family in this love story, were making desicions for yourself and following your heart rings out in the end. It's only flaw: too much war.
Its not the best book in the world. Its not the book I would probably buy for myself. It does get a good view on the Revolution, and does have some excitement, but not my favorite book. it was okay.
This is a very story but all that it contained for historical fiction was that it was in that time period. Well, just about. It was just that it was not tightly interwoven with the historical events.
I read this ages ago as a kid. I do recall though that I found a book report I'd written on this for school, and am fairly certain I scanned it in to be saved on the computer. What a nerd am I? :P
