A thief turned mage. A secret that could destroy the entire country. Elona was a thief living on the streets. With only a half-elf, Roland, by her side, Elona seeks to build her fortune in the world. When she is given the opportunity to infiltrate the arch mage's home and learn some magic on the way, there are no reasons to refuse for Elona. However, magic comes at a price and Elona is about to learn that she is part of that payment.
Amber Morant is an author and chaser of dragons in the Dayton, Ohio area. She has published several books within fantasy, exploring Japanese cultural influences. Exploring worlds outside of our own and collecting swords from different parts of the world has become part of who she is.
From the time she was in fourth grade trying to write the next “great Harry Potter” book in 2001 to now, Amber has been writing non-stop and finding magic in her everyday life. Outside of writing, Amber spends her time reading, playing video games, and chasing dragons.
The saying goes that “there is no honor among thieves”, but the protagonist of this story is certainly an exception to that rule.
This is a fun fantasy short story full of action and varied, interesting characters. Elona, the central character is clever and talented, and it is most engaging to see her adapt to the changes that happen in her life without losing her individuality or sacrificing her loyalty.
The world building is quite unique, providing settings that reveal the two extremes of life in the kingdom of Tore— the wealth of the mage’s citadel and the grunge of the thieves’ den. The kingdom has a very old-world feel, yet the characters have access to modern technology, which creates an intriguing juxtaposition
The story can be read under an hour, which makes it ideal for a lunch break or fitting into a busy lifestyle.
Excellent Short Story about a wonderful world yet to be explored
For a short story to be read in under an hour this is an excellent choice. Amber has created yet another character in her visionary world that I want to hear more about. So many unexplored adventures yet to come, and this one is the start of then all. A tyrannical hierarchy, a street urchin and a fairy, a world at war against all of them. What an excellent futuristic fantasy, eagerly awaiting the next book.
Blue Mage is a short story about a youg girl who turns from thiefing to magic. A good concept, but it could use a bit more work to give it the potentional it had.
For me, the story felt conflicted. The worldbuilding was typical fantasy medieval, but later on there were modern weapons in it as well. The characters were also conflicted. Our young thief didnt have any magic in the beginning and even fakes her 'magictrick' only to become a powerfull mage overnight? Also her motivation was not in line with her actions, it went from personal gain to wanting to save a boy she used to know because he had a special place in her heart.
Overall, the potentional was there but the story was -imo- rushed.

The main storyline is ok, though i think it could use some work to make it great. The world itself feels conflicted (medieval of a sort but with modern instruments) which is never explained. To me, this just read wrong and I had to go back a few times to make sure I'd read it right. The story also feels a bit rushed in places, jumping far too quickly from one situation to another, again with no explanation. I feel that it has the potential to be an awesome book but as it is now, it just didn't do it for me.
