Boundless #1

Boundless

Rate this book
My name is Jasmin Parker, and yesterday I was your typical teenager, only weeks from graduation—then soldiers from the future invaded and I discovered I have superpowers.

Bet you didn't see that coming. I know I didn't.

It wasn't a coincidence either, my powers and the invasion. They came for me. Because of me. I tried, but I couldn't stop them, and they took my entire world. My parents, my friends, my entire life ... gone. Like I never existed.

Now I’m boundless—I have all of time and space at my fingertips—but there's nowhere I'd rather be than the one place I can never go. Home.

And if that weren’t bad enough, an inter-dimensional demi-god is hell-bent on rewriting human history, and I'm the only one who can stop him. He's already erased my past, I won't let him steal the future from me too.

Can you believe it? Never even finished high school, and now it's up to me to save the universe.

Damien grew up on Terminator and Raymond Chandler and Green Lantern. On Deus Ex and PWEI. Blade Runner is his chicken soup when he's sick. He rereads Neuromancer every few years, and still loves the image of payphones ringing one by one as Case walks by, anachronistic or not.

He's a UX designer by day, a dad and husband by night, and a writer in the moments in between.

Boundless is a sci-fi novel that had a lot of promise but ultimately didn't quite hit the mark for me. While the story idea is cool and the concept of time traveling through the universe is intriguing, the book struggles with pacing and character development.

The pacing is all over the place. Sometimes the plot zips through important scenes in just a few sentences, making it hard to keep up or get fully immersed. Other times, it drags on about things that don’t seem all that important, which can be pretty frustrating.

Jasmin, the main character, didn’t really click for me. She felt underdeveloped, and it was tough to get emotionally invested in her journey. Her motivations and personality didn’t come through strongly enough to make her feel real or relatable.

The side characters didn’t add much to the story either. They seemed like background extras rather than integral parts of the plot. It was hard to care about them because they didn’t have much impact or depth.

That said, Boyes has a knack for world-building. The universe he creates is interesting and full of potential. With better pacing and more developed characters, this could have been an amazing read.

Overall, Boundless is a mixed bag. The concept is intriguing, but the execution needs work. If you’re into sci-fi and don’t mind some uneven pacing and not too fleshed-out characters, you might still enjoy it.

My apologies to the author, but the brutal truth is this is the worst book I've read in at least a decade (@ 150+ books per year). The main character is grossly incompetent and those around her but little better. The plot has more holes than a cheese grater. The protagonists parents are the only saving grace and tragically deceased along with their entire timeline in multiverse. If you've read this you've been warned.

Tight!

Boyes takes time travel and plays fast and loose with it in a way that is refreshing and lighthearted. Jasmin Parker is an interesting, flawed, impulsive character.

The only downside is that I found the prose to be less colourful than in his first series. But I can't wait to read more!!!

Great read

I enjoyed this book. This is my second read and I am finding Easter eggs in the chapter titles. Some of the titles are from lyrics of different bands and singers. The reason this book is a great read is that the plot twists are unexpected and the author develops the characters as the story progresses.

an interesting story

This was an interesting story. I’m intrigued to know what happens next. The characters kept me engaged, but we’ll see what happens with the twist at the end.

First off, let me say I recommend reading this book, and I enjoyed reading it. Secondly, I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

The good:
Strong female lead who is well developed and relatable.
Interesting concept and plot.
Story maintains a good pace.

The bad:
The rest of the characters are not fully built out.
The rules for time travel are confusing.

I really enjoyed reading a book with a female lead that does not does spend the entire story trying to prove her worth to a love interest (or worse, has more than one love interest and won't pick one over another). The story was a bit predictable once the main players were , but the story is told well enough that I didn't mind.
The rest of the characters aren't as well developed, and it felt like the author was holding back. My hope is these characters are going to be explored in future books. The rules for time travel seemed to be whatever was convenient to the story at the time., but since time travel is so far removed from reality that most of this can be overcome by a willing suspension of disbelief.

Jasmin Parker Wakes Up As A Teenager, Suddenly She Is A Boundless

A supernatural future is confusing, so it takes her a while to figure out what’s going on. While she stumbles about, her world is torn apart. Other of the boundless appear to guide her way but she doesn’t know who to trust. On top of all that, everything keeps changing.

Boundless is the story of Jasmin Parker and her journey to the future. It’s written in the first-person style so you are inside Jasmin’s mind, seeing what she sees, experiencing her new life, and learning right along with her. It’s an enjoyable peek into a whole new world of impossible realities. Well written and, although not entirely believable, convincing enough that you’ll find yourself rooting for her as she tackles her next obstacle.

Thank you Booksprout for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
