In love the way this guy writes but the book just missed the mark for me. I want good to conquer evil and I want everything to be tied up and a definite ride into the proverbial sunset, but it just didnt work that way. This is a crazy ride into the deep state so to speak. It has many twists and turns and I never knew who was good or who was bad. It was very enthralling. I tried to guess what was going on but I wasn't even close. Very hard to put down too. I was just a little disappointed at the end. Maybe there will be a sequel.
My rating: 4.5 When I first started reading this book; it gave me Gone Girl vibes. His wife goes missing after they arrive at a restaurant. Did he kill her? Is she faking her disappearance?
Well, that's where the similarities end from Gone Girl. Gone Girl was more dramatic than action-packed. This book (Sleep Disorders) is action-packed. What you think happens or will happen; you're probably going to be wrong.
I did really enjoy reading it. My only criticism is the ending seemed forced.
If that had been left out; I would have given this a 5 (We need half star ratings, Goodreads!) and added to my favorites.
I'm assuming there will be a sequel. The ending was open-ended and wasn't an ending....? Hmmmm, I'm intrigued.
Regardless, Mark Lukens has a new fan. I plan on reading other books of his within the coming months.
This book is about and ordinary married man who finds out that he has a sleeping disorder when his wife mysteriously disappears while they are on a dinner date .
This Author never disappoints just when I thought that I had figured out what was going on I'm thrown for a loop . This book had me on the edge of my seat I was like are they gonna make it was the main protagonist survive and what is that dark figure in the fog . If I was a betting woman which I'm not I'd think that was the Devil being implicated as the one who is really behind all this chaos which would really make a lot of sense . Anywho another great read from a great author thanks as always for sharing your amazing story's .
Since I read this book in two evenings, I was constantly looking out the window at every bump in the night. I got the chills - this book blew my mind and made me distrust the government even more lol. I loved it and would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good conspiracy book.
Zach’s mysterious sleepwalking spells are intriguing, certainly. While he has them he dreams about chasing his wife across the road to an abandoned house. When he finally goes there, he finds racist graffiti and a bunch of numbers scrawled on the walls. Given what we later find out about how and why he’s sleepwalking, most of this doesn’t really make sense to me. While I know how the numbers fit into the puzzle, I still don’t know why they got scrawled on the walls, for instance, and all of the obvious explanations don’t really seem to fit into the rest of it. While I also understand what the deal is with the rest of the graffiti, again given later developments it seemed… unnecessary. Hell, in general his sleepwalking for most of the story doesn’t seem to make much sense with the whole purpose of it later.
Stan is a conspiracy theorist and brings a psychiatric student, Alicia, into things. Stan doesn’t just help Zach set up cameras–he sticks around for a night or two, helps to check out the house across the street, gets Alicia to figure out what might be going on with the sleepwalking, and even calls in a couple of acquaintances who might be able to help. He’s a die-hard conspiracy theorist, but it’s hard not to start giggling as soon as chemtrails enter the conversation.
I found the explanations for the sleepwalking fascinating, even if the details didn’t all add up for me. The climax of the story is gripping. I wanted to understand more about Michelle (she’s an exceedingly flimsy character), and the focus on conspiracy theories was a little eyeroll-inducing. But there’s a solid story in here that was interesting to read.
Is this a small tidbit of what our world is really about to become. The story the author told most definitely gives one pause to think what the generations to come will have to contend with. An amazing read.
This is the first of Mark Lukens's works I've read. And I'm glad that I gave him a chance to entertain me.
Going into this novel, I had quite a few expectations, based on the blurb I'd read. And NONE of them were met. Because Mark took this novel in an entirely different direction that I could never have anticipated!
Though it starts as a slow burn, when the action takes off, it TAKES OFF and doesn't quit! If you're in the mood for an action story that'll bend your mind, this book is for you!
Thank you, Mark for your hard work. This was an excellent read!
Fantastic book in every way. The suspense is off the charts..-..intrigue, surprise twists and turns, things not being what they seem - my heart was in my throat. I ignored phone calls, bit my nails, didn't sleep, forgot what day it was..... No book lover should miss this!
This book was out of my normal genre. I am thrilled I stumbled upon this book. I know many are saying parts of it are unbelievable. I find it all completely believable and utterly terrifying. This book will keep you awake all night turning the pages and wondering ....what if?!
I'm not a huge review writer so I'll make it short and sweet.
READ THIS BOOK!
Just when you think you've figured it out, you realize you haven't. It kept my interest the whole time. Finished it in less than a day. Definitely going to read more from this author!
A really great thriller. Fast paced for the most part and I found I couldn't put the book down. If you are looking for a conspiracy, this will be a few evenings well spent. I will definitely be reading more from Mark Lukens.
There's definitely something about Lukens's writing. At least for me. Once I start reading I can't stop. An easy yet compelling read. Very entertaining.
I really liked this book. It had me drawn in from the beginning. The author did a good job of keeping you guessing. It wasn’t at all what I expected it to be but, in a good way.
I almost added this book to my "fantasy" shelf but to be honest, I don't know enough about the subject to discern reality from fantasy in this particular field. I doubt anyone who isn't actively involved really knows. But I do believe some elements were fantasy.
So to avoid spoilers, I will just say - as other reviewers have said - this book was not at all what I was expecting. I wasn't looking for another Gone Girl, one of those is enough, but I was expecting most of the action to be more within the realm of domestic disharmony and possibly police procedurals. However, about a third of the way through it took an oblique turn into the Twilight Zone. And that particular corner of Twilight Zone is not one of my favorites. Since the book wasn't too long, I went ahead and finished it, but I honestly would have preferred something more mundane.
Because of that, and because of grammatical errors and awkward phrasings and, to be honest, somewhat amateurish writing despite the author's many other books, this book gets three stars, and that is being generous. I should have taken note of the fact that even though I got this book though Kindle Unlimited, it only costs 99 cents to buy. I've found the price of Kindle Unlimited books can be a rough indicator of their quality - not always, but often enough that it warrants paying attention to it.
I was going for five stars, but was struggling with how to get a half added. So, four it is. I wasn't sure in the beginning if I liked this tale. As I continued, my Kindle Fire HD began acting up...first time ever. I believe that it has been read to near demise. Anyhow, I liked this tale a lot. The more I read, the more I had to read. Will there be a follow up? I need one! Luckily, i recently had bought the newest Kindle...the ten plus. I am not sure if I like it yet, but it allowed me to finish this novel. More, please, Mark Lukens.
Careful you don't turn into a conspiracy theorist!
The way this story was written and told has all the promise of turning an average everyday Joe (or Jane) into a conspiracy theorist. The fear of not knowing who to trust, including yourself, is truly terrifying! This is the second or third Mark Lukens' book I've read and I'm definitely a fan. Would love to see a sequel to this set 5 years in the future😁
This book was super slow. I had already committed to reading and it was on my book reads so I knew I’d get here but boy did it take forever. The story line was interesting in the beginning. His wife is missing like WTH? It then tapers off and stays off till last couple of chapters when finally somebody’s life is in danger. I wanted to love it it but it fell short.
This book left me with chills. It left me very uneasy. It left me questioning alot of what I've always considered to be the truth....Is technology really a good thing? What do we really know? How much free will do we really have? Who can you really trust??? Not paranormal in the least, but maybe one of the most terrifying stories I've read in a very long time. Just because you're not paranoid, doesn't mean .......
Seems like I’ve seen, read, heard this story a hundred times in my life but not in a fiction book. I bet everyone could guess what was written on that yellow shirt. I finished this very quickly, hard to put down, seems all too real, gave me a chill at the end. Sad that it’s so close to reality, maybe a lot closer than a lot of people think. Five stars. Off to see what other stories this talented writer has to say...
Sleep Disorders is a very paranoid thriller that will leave you guessing until the final line. The ending is nothing like you might expect. If you want a book that's one man's hell brought to life, read Sleep Disorders. If you like unexpected thrills and an endless maze of twists and turns, read Sleep Disorders. Basically, just read the book and savor the ride!
I was hooked but thinking of a movie I saw long ago of a kidnapped wife. But it really took off in a direction I did not expect. It got so I could not put this book down. I even continued reading during supper. This is so true to today's digital world that this could happen and even possibly has been done. I'd love to see this as a movie. SUPERB! I'm so lucky I can read a great book like this and see if in my mind.
Pretty cool concept. This book is fairly well written. I did notice there were phrases and words repeated within the same scenarios a few times, but it was a pretty engaging read. Also wide open for a sequel if Mark felt like it. I read the whole book without effort or feeling like I was slogging. Nice work.
Another winner by Mark Lukens. I did not figure this mystery out. I read diligently and blamed every person. The characters were likeable people and you feel sorry for them. I was glad it wasn't me. I do believe in government conspiracies and this story fit right into that notion. I hope you'll read this book and enjoy it. Happy Reading!
Everything this author writes is good and keeps you fully engrossed, wanting to keep turning the page and figure out what is going on. I’ll read anything this guy puts out and know I won’t be disappointed.
