Abstract Love

Rate this book
Every Monday morning we sit in the same room, our friendly, across-the-room glances turning into hours-long texting conversations. But only within these walls.

In here, we're the cancer patients with time on our hands and everything to lose. Out there, however, we couldn't be more different.

I'm a wanna-be social worker who spends her weekends tending bar. He's an artist, but I know there's more to him than that; things he doesn't like to talk about; things like his family, and the girlfriend who can't accept his diagnosis.

He can't save my breasts.
I can't save his voice.

But what we can do is take the scariest thing we've ever faced and make it better... tolerable... dare I even say... fun .

People always talk about what will happen if they don't get better. In our case, however, the unasked question is—what happens if we do?

A sweet story of love and survival with an HEA.

Despite the fact that she is a romance writer, Samantha Christy's favorite television show of all time is The Walking Dead.

And contrary to the fact that her heroines drink things like wine and Cosmos, she prefers Bud Light.

She also loves fan mail and answers all of it.

She went to college and all that, getting a degree in something she never uses. She's also got a gaggle of kids (4) and a pretty decent husband.

description

Keri’s life wasn’t easy. At sixteen she loses her parents in a tragic accident, living after in many foster homes. Now at 24 she works as a bartender while finishing her degree in Sociology. She also works at The Freeway Station, a home for children who have problems at home. Keri’s life is shattered when she finds out she has breast cancer, stage two. Her only support is her roommate and best friend, Tanner.

Jace is a 27 years old man who also has cancer, throat cancer. He’s a humanitarian, helping people through his organization. He's also an artist. His family is wealthy, but they doesn’t support him like a family should do. Instead, they plan his life. He doesn’t have a real support in his girlfriend Morgan, because she doesn’t accept he has cancer.

Keri and Jace meet each other at their chemo sessions. They become friends very fast, soon both of them looking forward to these meetings.

“You are so different from other women, Keri. I’ve never met anyone like you.
I never expected this.
Me: Never expected what?
Jace: You. I never expected you, Keri.”

They feel drown to each other from the beginning, they are connected by a bond that nobody sever. They don’t need words...they can communicate just looking at each other.

Soon Keri starts to fall for Jace, but Jace has Morgan. He loves his girlfriend, he doesn’t want to be without her, even if he feels this strong connection with Keri. Everything changes for Keri and Jace when Morgan breaks up with Jace.

Reading the prologue you will think this will be a depressing read. It really wasn’t. I truly enjoyed the first half of the book, but after, it started to drag a little bit. The first half it was refreshing for me because like I said it wasn’t depressing or super emotional like I expected.

I liked both Keri and Jace. They are strong and determined to fight and live. They are perfect. I mean very perfect…too perfect. For me they didn’t feel always very real. Anyway...I liked how strong they are. They have so much faith and hope. I love their banter, their sweet and funny moments together and their connection. What I didn’t like is how fast Keri falls for Jace. Too fast for me!

If the first half was entertaining, the second half felt a little flat. The story has too many plot devices for me. I felt it was too much. There’s too much going on.

There's angst and drama, like I expected it, but also there's some unnecessary drama, like the drama in the end.

Overall, I like this one, but I didn’t love it!

Oh wow! What a wonderful perfect story of 2 people who give cancer a fight of their life. Despite being sick with cancer, 2 souls find each other and fall in love. In such a romantic endearing story.

This story is well research especially the cancer part and chemo. I love Keri and Jace together. They are giving a new meaning to soul mate. My heart swell with such sweetmess and how strong they are fighting for their live and also each other.

The angst is sufficient to keep the story develop nicely. Especially with Morgan character. I wish there is another book for Morgan. She deserves her HEA too. Nd the paintings. I am not art lover but with this book, i learn the beauty of abstract painting.

“There are only two reasons people don’t show up for chemotherapy . . .”

If that isn't a grabber I don't know what is???

This book is one of those random gems you find while scrolling online and think hmmm maybe I'll click you. I honestly didn't really expect much of it but after reading that freaking prologue I WAS HOOKED!

Abstract Love is a story of hope, second chances, love, fate, perseverance, and fighting against the odds.

Keri is a 24 year bartender working towards a Sociology degree as well as volunteering at The Freeway Station, a home for troubled teens. She's gone through a lot in life. After losing her parents in a terrible accident and then bouncing around from foster home to foster home, she has finally found her calling and is determined to stand on her own two feet and follow her dreams, with the help of her room mate and best friend Tanner. But there is one thing standing in the way of these dreams...Keri has stage 2 breast cancer.

“Dr. Olsen informed me a few short months ago that I have stage two breast cancer, ...

...now I live my life by the numbers. Ninety-three—the percent chance I will survive the five year mark. Thirteen—the number of cycles of chemotherapy I must endure. Eight—the number of eggs harvested from my ovaries in case the chemo fries my insides. Sixty-five—the percent chance I will lose my hair.”

A few weeks into her chemo sessions, fate intervenes and paths that have been crossed merge into one, and with the new addition to their weekly Monday morning session group enters a man who will most likely change her way of life forever.

OH MY GOODNESS! Seriously I cannot explain the how this book made me feel but I will try.

Holy butterfly, swoony, over the top feels. This is definitely one of those books that will stay with me always. I haven't felt this way since The Fault in Our Stars and Ruin. I honestly didn't go into this with many expectations because there weren't many reviews to go through, so when that prologue threw me on my ass I was stuck. I have never had a prologue make me go all teary eyed like that. I was literally holding my breath and fearing for the worst.

Keri...is my freaking hero! She is an amazingly strong character. She's already been handed the short end of the stick in life, losing her parents as a teen, being forced into the foster care system and then finding out she has cancer at such a young age, you would think that it would ruin her, but hell no! She didn't let it run her life and I totally admire her strength and her will to move forward. She picked herself up and lived life as well as she could and would still try to make the world a better place.

Jace, where do I start with this amazing man? He's smart, funny, hella hot, humble and extremely talented but his hot spot lies in his giving heart. A humanitarian who lives to give back to those less fortunate is amazing, and how he goes out of his way to bring a smile to someone's face had me melting! He really is the epitome of the perfect man. He's extremely loyal and though he fights his attraction to Keri daily, their dynamic friendship is super cute.

What we find out early on is that Jace has a girlfriend, and though he is a loyal and amazing man, he realises that there is something about Keri that's drawing him in. They have a sort of companionship that we see flourish and grow into a beautiful friendship. Their back and forth texting was hilarious and to see their friendship grow was just so special. I swear I was in love with Jace by chapter three.

This author has an amazingly gripping writing style that keeps your eyes glued to every page, so much so that I inhaled this book within hours. I could not put it down. What you also don't know is that this book brought me out of my review writing hiatus. I haven't written a review all year and this random beauty brought me outta retirement because it was THAT good that I had to, and I mean I HAD TO write a review in hopes that it would spread the word and have people recognise the epicness of this book.

But what this book also brought me was a slide show of memories of good times and some not so good. This subject really does hit close to home and it's something that I hold dear to my heart. A few years back I lost my grandmother after an epic battle with breast cancer. Going through years of chemo, remission, scans being clear only to find a few months later it's come back was definitely a difficult period to go through. Though through her struggles, she never gave in and let the cancer beat or define her. She always had a smile on her face and I honestly do commend and take my hat off to all those amazingly brave people out there who go through this day in-day out and can still look on the bright side of life and not let this silent killer run their lives is so freaking awesome. ❤️

There are seriously no words. This book was brilliant and it was written so well that I have nothing but positives and happy feels about it. Sooo to sum up my novel of a review I urge y'all to drop what you're doing and go get this now!! It is definitely worth the read and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone looking for a sweet story about how two people from different worlds can find comfort and solace in each other while going through one of the worst situations imaginable. Take a chance and you'll see why I love Keri and Jace's story❤️

You may love this, but this book is not for me. The hero has a girlfriend whom he loves. She breaks up with him before he gives his "love" to Keri (the heroine). I can not stand books where the hero loves his girlfriend, does not want to be without his girlfriend, and it takes his girlfriend to break up with him for him to move forward with the heroine. This is a personal reading preference.
I am not telling you not to read it.

I loved the premise, but can not handle a hero that loves another until the "other" does not love him back.

This book was absolutely amazing. From the prologue. ....
"There are only two reasons people don't show up for chemotherapy...."
This alone catches your breathe and you can feel the emotional hurricane begin.

 photo PicsArt_1432297691352_zpspvlpiuuq.jpg

Keri, so young, but the life she has lived thru is unthinkable. Losing her parents in a fire at 16, she is now homeless and lost. She closes herself off from the world and loses her feeling for life. Until the day she begins to steal petty objects, she feels the adrenaline kick in, but that doesn't last long as she is busted and sent to a youth home where she meets her best friend, Tanner.

As she turns her life around with his help and love, she puts herself thru college, and finally feels happiness, until bad news comes knocking again. .......her breast cancer diagnosis.

As she begins her cycles of chemo, in walks the man that changes everything........

Jace
 photo PicsArt_1432297788086_zps5kchrrtf.jpg
Young and handsome, 27 year old Jace, has been diagnosed with throat cancer and can't speak. He talks in whispers and texts.

Instant eye contact leads to a bond between these two that is beautiful and connected in ways neither dreams of.

"You are the best side effect of cancer."

As their connection grows each chemo encounter, they both want more but there is one problem standing in their way. Morgan, Jace's longtime girlfriend.

They both agree friendship is path they need and respect those boundaries. If only their hearts agreed to these terms. As they support each other and understand the hell their cancer is putting them thru, they fall in love.

 photo PicsArt_1432298353524_zpstvkmvnrn.jpg

Friendship contines, and the journey is filled with the fate that they were meant to be together. Neither can fight the bond they share. Neither understanding their bond, until Keri tells her story of the fire. That tragic day has bonded them together without them knowing.

When fate plays the ultimate hand, Keri learns that Jace and his girlfriend have broken up. They begin to test their friendship in allowing tiny bits of their love show.

Their connection continues to be tested by outside obstacles. These obstacles don't stand a chance against the power of their connection and strength to fight.

"You were my inspiration, Keri."
"Watch me as I love you."

I have never had a book actually push me to be a better person. The story is beautifully done and has weaved it's words in changing the way I look at life.

Thank you Samantha Christy!!!

****SPOILERS****

Very well researched.
Brilliant portrayal of the world of oncology.
A clever spin: both Hxh have cancer.

The 3 Main Characters:
The Couple: the hero and his childhood-sweetheart-love-of-his-life-whom-he-adores…aka the ow, Morgan.
The heroine, Keri.

The Bottom Line: and the top line (is there even such a thing?)and 1 of the main plot devices, (there are MANY others which I’m not addressing here, and the beginning and ending of their story and everything in between, is:
The Romance
Between him and the ow
How MUCH he loves and adores the ow
The flowery balloony romantic gestures
How MUCH he loves the ow
Their closeness and sharing
How MUCH he loves the ow
How they both can’t move on
His patience, caring, understanding, gentleness and thoughtfulness wrt her
How he cheats on her by getting emotionally involved with the h
How MUCH he loves the ow
He tells EVERYONE this - Over and Over. Riiiight until just before the end of the
How he will ALWAYS love the ow
How the only reason H and ow aren’t together is because she broke up with him

The Hxh:
Not much going on here:
They’re attracted to each other
Have lots in common
They make NO commitment to each other during the book, until the very end
They are NEVER a couple – until the verrrry last

The Title:
Spot on.
There’s definitely no clear, visible love between the hxh.
Strong feelings born from the solidarity-in the-face-of-our-pain-and-no-one-else-gets-me-like-you-do kinda thing, yes, but certainly nothing concrete.

Abstract Love is the best book I’ve read all year. An emotionally gripping love story with amazing characters that fall in love in an atypical situation. I don’t want to be the type of reviewer that spoils the plot for you, but suffice it to say that this is not your typical love story in your typical setting, with the typical characters with the typical problems. In my opinion, this book is extraordinary. It tackles hard, real life problems with humor and grace and demonstrates that true love does indeed conquer all.

I have been known to read up to 700 books a year, and for a book to make this much of an impression on me is really saying something. I’ve already downloaded Samantha Christy’s other novel and I cannot wait to get started. If it’s half as good as Abstract Love, I’m already hooked.

I really liked the first book I read from this author, Be My Reason, but this one didn't work for me.

What I liked:

*The fact that Keri and Jace met in chemotherapy. It was a surprisingly different setting and helped keep my interest during the first half of the book. The first half of the book was better than the second half.

*Keri's work with troubled kids. I liked that she remembered where she came from and wanted to give back. The time she spent in chemotherapy and at the shelters were the most engaging parts of the book for me.

What I didn't like:

*Jace. It was obvious to him almost immediately that Keri was crushing on him pretty hard. He told her he had a girlfriend, but he just kept flirting with Keri, leading her on, telling her how awesome she is... He knew what he was doing, and the lame excuse of his parents wanting him with Morgan didn't work, he's 27 years old! And as the book wore on, Jace's dialogue just kept getting more cheesy. Like the author was trying to make him the perfect guy, but in reality no one talks like that!

*Too many coincidences. When he showed Keri the picture that he painted when she was 16, I just rolled my eyes and it took me right out of the story. Too unbelievable.

*Jace's mom, she was too cartoon villain-ish.

*In the second half of the book, Keri turned from a strong woman into an insecure one, and it was disappointing.

The first quarter of this book was amazingly beautiful, but then it went downhill fast. The H had a girlfriend all along and couldn't turn away from that relationship (I knew immediately it was a soul tie because of their sexual relationship), so the H and h never became a couple until the 11 pages from the end. Oh there was chemistry there, but the OW was between them the whole time. Even after the OW broke it off with the H because he had cancer, the H he was willing to take her back all along if she returned to him. For me this ruined the whole book. I prefer a H and h who are THE ONE for each other or even a slow long fall together, not a h who feels second fiddle through the whole book because the H couldn't escape his feelings for the OW. Two stars for such a beautiful beginning.

This book is absolutely AMAZING. Seriously, it's one of the best books I've ever read.

It's about a girl and a boy, who both suffer from different types of cancer. It simply makes you understand what it's like to people in real life who suffer from serious diseases and how they feel about it and how other people approach it.

Jace and Keri are both so brave and amazing. I must admit I fell in love with Jace the very first time he showed up in that hospital for chemotherapy. I loved his character and his gentle personality. He's a great humanitarian and would do anything for people who really need help. And how he helped everyone from the chemo is amazing and it made me love him even more. He knew those people weren't really rich and the little gifts he gave them. Oh My God. I'm seriously in love with him.

Keri is amazing too. She was annoying at some points, but then who wouldn't be when the person you love shows you that he has some kinds of feelings for you but won't really admit it, plus Jace was in a relationship with Morgan almost through the whole book. And she was kinda b**ch to him. Like she loves him but she can't stand seeing the condition he's in because of the cancer. For God's sake she left him because she couldn't stand seeing him after the side effect of chemo started showing. I felt so sorry for him and also thought that he was an a** for not admitting his love for Keri earlier. It could've been much easier for both of them, but whatever, it all turned out good in the end so I felt overjoyed in the end.

I felt giddy and sad while reading it and I smiled and cried at the same time. Seriously, you have to read this book. You definitely won't regret it and will feel extremely happy after you finish it.

Caught up in all things Samantha Christy and moving right along through her backlist. How or why I have missed out on such wonderful reads this long, I'll never know. But she is definitely an auto buy for me now.

I really found myself caught up in this truly beautiful story of two young people - both fighting their own personal battle with cancer. Sharing time together during chemo therapy develops into more than either expected. But the building relationship between the two main characters is one small part of this story. Oh there are so many amazing facets involved with this one. I was enveloped in so much emotion. Christy's writing is terrific and easy to follow, well-paced and filled with all those feelings that comes with life.

Believe me, I sweated bullets in this one. I've read enough heart-breakers similar to this -- and been devastated in the end. Not happening here -- it was one of the best ever endings and I simply wept with happiness.

A great start to 2018 already!

I really though reading Keri and Jace's story, that it was going to be difficult. I was expecting to ugly cry, but instead I got a story of two people who meet while receiving chemo therapy and the friendship, connection, and feelings they develop for each other. And the strong bond that they shared. At 96% I was starting to think that it was going to leave me in an cliffhanger, but in the end... it all worked out.

I do wished there had been more dialog between Jace and his ex-girlfriend.

4.5 stars - Its funny since i stumbled upon this book by accident and luckily it was a good one. Im mostly an M/M reader. Cancer terrifies me and i never read a book on cancer before, but I'm glad i read this one because it actually eased my fears of the disease and made it part of life like it should be and not necessary an immediate death sentence as we tend to see it.
It was beautiful, emotional and a real page turner. The only thing that i didn't like is the MCs being to perfect to the point it was annoying, and the parents that manifest indifference to their children so extremely that i found it hard to believe they grown to be perfect creatures under this environment ( it was like all the characters in the book got an extreme personal features to emphasize who they are but it become unrealistic) still i loved the book a lot.

I was thoroughly enjoying this book. I felt Keri's struggle: both the medical one and they emotional one she fell into with Jace. My heart truly hurt for her. I was thinking 5 stars all the way. But towards the end, things jumped the shark a bit. I felt like it got a bit cheesy an over the top. Thus the 4 stars. However, still worth the read.

I have several issues with this book. I’ll start with the biggest one even if for some readers it’s probably irrelevant. But I must point it out.

The book is called “Abstract love” partially in reference to the abstract painting the hero is doing. You see he’s an artist who’s creating an abstract art. When our MC sees the very first of his so called abstract paintings she instantly “gets it”.
“I’ve never much understood abstract art. It just seems like blobs and blurs to me. I guess I’ve always thought that abstract art was a label put on art made by those people not talented enough to be true artists” After that nice comment about more of a century old art movement and artists like Kandinsky, Mondrian and Barnet Newman, out dear MC is absolutely and completely taken with hero’s painting.

“Wow! This is good! It is a painting of a man and a woman. The man is down on his knees holding up his hand and looking up at the woman. On the surface it looks like he could be proposing to her. But when I study it further, the deeper meaning becomes clear to me”.
In a text message to the hero she explains this “deeper” meaning: “it looks like the woman is confused and unhappy and the man is hurting. He is trying to tell her something, but he can’t find the words and he is frustrated.”

It’s my turn to say wow! Girl you must abandon your sociology studies right this moment and go take some art history classes! With that inside understanding of abstract art, you’ll be able to reveal the “deeper” meaning where many other had miserably failed! And there’s my issue: abstract art is a form of art where the depiction of reality if not completely absent at least partially nonexistent. And when I say partially I mean to the point of incomprehension of the composition’s integrity. Of course abstraction can be partial in a figurative composition as it appears to be the case here. But the main point of abstraction is to flee reality and the chains of realism. Movements like cubism and fauvism are partially drown to the abstraction of the forms and the colors. But when you talk about abstract as way of painting you talk about a “picture” completely devoted of any sign of realism. More simply said there’s no story, no action, there’s no reality as we know it. All forms depicted on an abstract painting generally points to nothing we know. It’s the whole idea! So excuse me if I just can’t make myself okay with this! For the sake of art do some research! Even Wikipedia is in this case enough correct!

The reaction of the hero when he reads her message is: “Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has ever understood what I meant to represent in my paintings.” First of all pal if you do an abstract painting it’s actually pretty normal. People are not supposed to “understand” your art simply because that’s the point of abstraction! Arrgh!!! But of course our genius MC gets it right away! That’s my second issue. It’s not only the painting and let me tell you she understands all of them, it’s all about him that she gets as he gets her. He asks her questions nobody and I mean NOBODY has ever asked her. OK, I get it, they understand each other. Actually I got it after that first comment of his. But the author had to go on and on how nobody asked this or that to the point I wanted to smash my Kindle. They were made for each other, ok that’s great, but the emphasis of it was completely needless even for this kind of novel. Especially for this kind of novel where it’s obvious that they are meant to be.
Overall the plot was weak and there was so much drama and crying that I got utterly bored by the 70% of the story. DNF.

I was gifted this book from the author in exchange for an honest review (Thank You!)

Abstract Love by Samantha Christy was a book that affected me deeply. It's is one that will stay with me for a long time.

“There are only two reasons people don’t show up for chemotherapy…” And so begins a stunningly inspiring story of surviving, benevolence, and never settling for second best in finding your true love. Keri, a 24 year old bartender with stage 2 breast cancer, meets Jace, a 27 year old artist with stage 2 throat cancer. They slowly develop a close friendship as they sit across from each other for 11 weeks of chemo therapy treatments. As the weeks progress, they realize their friendship is developing into something much more. As Keri says, “we share a bond that no one wants to share,” a beautiful testament to the trials that cancer patients suffer. There is one problem that neither can forget – Jace has a girlfriend, leading to a private joke between Keri and Jace. When one begins to feel the attraction, they ask the other to “give me a side effect.”

I can’t recommend this book enough. The story was written with powerful details of the effects of cancer on the body without taking away from the gradual tale of their love. If anything it enhanced it. The banter between Keri and Jace was humorous and honest. This was not a sad story, it was anything but. However, it was an emotional story that had me in tears one minute and laughing the next.

If I could give it 10 stars, I would.

OMG!! Loved Samanthas Mitchell Sisters series. Was gifted Abstract Love. And loved it.
Jace and Keri meet at chemo therapy both having cancer. It's lovely that they developed a connection helping each other through their weekly treatments. Then they develope feelings for each other. Doesn't help that Jace has a girlfriend and Keri having had bad experiences with men. They both are caring people would do anything to help. It's just a lovely read.

Incredible

You ever been hit so hard by an entire vortex of emotions that it takes you a whole book to figure out what’s happened to you?
Christy hit it out of the park with this one, delving into the complexity of a soul mate as well as sometimes terminal illness.
Beautifully written and executed, I don’t think there was anything this book lacked.

My heart was completely ripped from my chest stomped all over and then miraculously put back together with this story. Filled with high emotion and a true reflection on the power of words this book should not be missed. Keri and Jace's love story filled with cancer treatments, text messages and hope will make the reader a better person just for picking up the book.

OMG!!!
I'm not sure how I came across this book but I'm so glad that I did. I was expecting an emotional, tear jerker based on the blurb but that wasn't the case at all. Yes, both main characters are dealing with cancer but through their treatment they find each other and love. This is such a sweet and tender story and I would highly recommend it.
