Annie is an air hostess who has just been dumped on the way to the airport, by text. Depite her high flying career serving tea, coffee and sometimes too much alcohol to passengers, her love life has just nosedived. All she wants to do is lock herself away with a jumbo-sized pot of ice-cream. But she must pack her case, paint a bright red smile on her lips and jet from London to Chicago, ignoring any turbulence along the way. However, things work out in mysterious ways, and it soon looks like the departure of Mr Wrong, could mean the arrival of Mr Right! Tighten those seatbelts, folks - you are about to take off and enjoy the flight of your life with Annie!
Marisa Mackle is the no. 1 bestselling author of more than twenty novels, translated into ten languages. Her first book, Mr Right for the Night, was a number one bestseller in Ireland and Germany, also reaching no. 2 on the Amazon UK bestseller list. She has a young son and lives in Co. Meath, Ireland. She was a flight attendant for 7 years.
I found this at a used book store and considering I’m airline crew, I picked it up straight away. Maybe if I wasn’t crew, I would be giving it more than a star... but even then, the romance part fell flat. But I picked it up thinking it would be an easy, relatable read still. It wasn’t.
This is not a quick, fun, light chick flick. It is slow, plotless, and tries to be serious and fails miserably. There were 4 characters encouraging Annie to go after a married man. The coincidences are unbelievable. The circumstances under which she met Danny were HUGE red flags and I was expecting him to kidnap her and sell her in all honestly. But she claimed that any other man she would slap for touching her leg after just meeting, but Danny was hot, so it was okay. What the FUCK? He followed you off a plane in a foreign country and happened to know everything about you. RUN.
It went from little anecdotes and Annie being heartbroken over a man she had a 2 day fling with to suddenly the plot of a bad action film. I mean, the last 20 pages are ridiculous. Suddenly there’s a terror attack on the aircraft and her nephew is held hostage? What happened to my cute little romance novel?!
Look, it may seem like I’m spoiling it, but I don’t recommend you go out and search for this. Maybe pick it up if you find it in a used book store, which is where mine is returning. (Also, it’s hasn’t aged brilliantly - she suggests putting a new profile picture on her Bebo. I had flashbacks.)
I recently completed Marisa Mackle’s Confessions of an Air hostess, a book that I picked up at a book sale in Churchgate, Mumbai. I remember plunging in with no expectations, except perhaps a glimmer of hope that it might be a bit humorous, after all I was certain air hostesses would have quite a bit of a glamorous life and a zillion amusing anecdotes.
Annie Anderson is an air hostess who loves and hates her job in equal parts. She has been recently dumped (via text) and isn’t on the dating cicuit yet, until she meets the hunky-dory Danny who spells trouble (with a capital T). A pilot in the same airlines, Danny is a god – gorgeous, charming and seductive, but he is also a liar, cheat and drunk. Does Annie realise the kind of trouble she attracts? Or does she sober up and opt for someone a little more settled and smart?
The first-person narrative is mostly fun, but can be excruciatingly painful at times (especially in moments of lesser sanity). Annie is amusing, entertaining and quite likeable, which makes her more of a target of unwanted affections and attention. As the central protagonist, she shares insights into just how unglamourous a flight attendant’s life is (if you ever thought of embarking on one), but also highlights the fantastic perks. On the downside, the memories of her sister, Emily, seem a bit forced as an attempt to portray Annie as an emotional person, not just a dimwit. It doesn’t work.
Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend you buy this book or that it’s a keeper, but if you do come across it, it makes for some entertaining and superficial light reading.
Overall, I would go with a 2.5/5, because I cannot say that I didn’t really enjoy it – it definitely had its moments, albeit far and in between.
I just couldn't get into this book at all, and why...urgh. The tone of the main character Annie, while the author is trying to make her sound chic and sophisticated, is more that of a dozy bore? Annie doesn't want to fall into the stereotype of being an air hostess, and yet the author only seems to be able to emphasise those stereotypes more by having Annie jumping into bed and drinking every night with men she doesn't know, only to realise it's wrong after the fact. You can't argue you don't want to stereotype when you are DOING EXACTLY THAT. And while Annie may be 'aware' of this, all the other hostesses she works with are written to be either models, or to want to sleep with any of the cabin crew that they can get their hands on. Which to me screams very little research, or the author has a very one track mind as to what being an air hostess actually entails. Oh and then we have a sudden stalker and hostage situation at the end, which seems to just be wrapped up in around 5 pages and is wham bam thank you ma'am over and that's the book one and done. Truly....I don't understand this book at all.... Onto the next!
Great read! Very enjoyable light-hearted romantic comedy I couldn’t resist a 99 cent e-book romance! This book was worth every penny and more. The author packs a lot of story in an under 200-page e-book. Meet Annie, an air hostess who not only has a great sense of humor but can face all of the jobs little misadventures with a smile. Before her route starts, she finds herself suddenly dumped by her boyfriend, but things may be looking up. Purely by accident – no spoiler - she meets a man who might just fill that position. Of course, there are always some twists and turns along the way, some fun, some dark, but all interesting. But, if there weren’t, it wouldn’t be the great read that it is. If you are looking for a fun weekend read, throw a buck down and enjoy the ride with Annie.
The book is a whirlwind of emotions and super fun read, it is a perfect chick lit for a lazy weekend 📚 ☕️ I really enjoyed the entire holiday experience that Annie has with hot and handsome Danney and the type of teenage fun they have together
Loved the way Annie describes her job and all the plus and minus that come with it
Her relationship with her elder sister is moving and heartwarming ❤️ the monologue is funny ❤️ lots of dreamy wow experiences ❤️lots of drama 😉
#qaod : how do you like your coffee? Dark/ light/ black/ full fat ?
Witty Romance Ok, so I don't usually read romantic stories, however the book was recommended and I do have to say the story was light-hearted, witty, humorous and perfect for the holiday season. With any book, writing style is what draws me into the story. The author, Marissa Mackle wraps the reader into the story from the first page with witty humor and real to life circumstances anyone can relate to. But there's more, so much more going on in this story that we just need to keep reading to find out , following Annie (the air hostess) through a romantic journey. A perfect read for the holiday season.
First read of this author and I would read further books but know that this is just lightweight chick lit and I would not read any of this author's novels twice! A no-brainer read for when you need one! There were some painfully obvious literary tricks such as alliteration when describing the main character's former boyfriends. A very unconvincing back story of the death of her sister. A number of cringe-worthy sentences and paragraphs where I thought the author does not quite know how to use vertain words or turn of phrase.
This is a great, humorous and light hearted read that pulls on the heart strings during a couple of pages. There are quite a few spelling errors through out the book or misplaced/double upped on words but it doesn’t impact the flow of reading. The main character is a believable personality and easy to relate to. I did feel the ending was rushed and a little predictable.
As an ex air hostess, I can say that the book describes this job pretty well. But the book itself is very primitive - I actually forgot I’ve read it before (which has never happened to me with any other books previously)! Neither the love story, nor other parts are actually worth your time - 1 night “cheap” reading it is.
Small book, for a fast read. The chapters fly by and ironically small enough to read on an aeroplane. I've had this on my shelf for years and just never got around to reading it. Wasn't really that impressed with the story, certainly not what I would pick up now to read compared to 10 years ago but wouldn't read again.
Lowered my expectations when I first dived into this book, thought it was just another cliche chick lit that I guess I'll just read to kill times, turned out I actually enjoyed it more than I'd expected. It was a fun read, this one!
A simple, sweet read that you can have after reading a heavy one. Cute characters, predictable motives, and overall a no nonsense book. Situations aren’t extremely tense, and it is a smooth sailing.
This is a funny story about (as you may guess from the title) an air hostess. It follows her search for love, her downfalls and then her victorious moments. Apart from being a fantastic story, this book is hilarious and cringey. The main character gets herself in all sorts of situations! It is one of those books that you don't have to work hard to read, you can relax and still follow it easily. It is a fantastic story with a lovely end. I know that anyone will enjoy this easy going tale.
Summary This book was perfect for a relaxing holiday read. Very funny and easy to read and even had me crying in parts! Recommended for anyone who can relate to doing a hard days work and who loves a good romantic comedy!
Follow Annie (our air hostess) as she goes about her day as a newly single air hostess.
My Thoughts:
I’m really intrigued by the life of flight attendants (both real & fictional) so when I saw this, I knew I had to read it. I thought this was absolutely brilliant. I loved the character of Annie - oh, I thought she was hilarious. I also loved how Annie described everything to do with her job as a flight attendant (which is made even better knowing that the author used to work as a flight attendant herself so you’re getting a real insider’s perspective as well). I loved it 😊
Some parts of this story were very predicable, although I found one particular part of the ending (not giving anything away) really random in the context of the rest of the story - not in a million years would I have seen it coming.
I found some aspects of Annie and Danny's personalities quite inconsistent but if you want a quick read that will make you smile and give you a bit of an insight in to the "glamourous" world of an air hostess this would be a good choice.
I literally flew through Confessions Of.. in two days. A great page turner and fun to read with a thumper at the end of each chapter. Would be even funnier to buy at the airport and read on board a flight. I finished this book recently and was so sorry when it ended! This is the first book I have read by Marisa Mackle but I am going to read all the others now. For me it had just the right mix for a book - romance, emotion and very funny in parts.
It reads like a string of Heat magazines sewn together.
There was something about shoes, something about celebrities. There was a tense dilemma near the end where our heroine had to deal with the fact someone else nearly bought the same dress as her, but it wasn't enough to really grip me.
Could be the worst book I've ever read. A must read for all budding female authors, you can probably do better.
It is terrific from the first chapters (& really funny) to the middle, BUT I found 3 last chapters to be disappointing. Why does she have to spoil all about the sexy drunkard Danny & how they are in love with each other and then drop it in 1 chapter in the end, when she found he is just a fool drunken man who always cheat in on his beautiful girlfriend???
This was a very enjoyable book. Lots of humour. I loved the author's voice (written in the 1st person as typical chick lit). At first Annie came off as a complete airhead but then gradually I came to learn her better and found some depth and poignancy.
It was also very interesting to read about airline cabin crew work from an insider's perspective.
A poorly written book an not even very interesting. I'm surprised I managed to finish the stupid thing. The main character was a whiny brat. I'm not sure how this author even managed to get this book published.
The book is actually extremely amusing in bits and pieces - esp. Annie's antics with as an Airhostess!!! Her love life ... ugh .... not really unique, is usual chick-lit drama ... On the whole, fun, time-pass, easy read!
I read this book during Easter holiday when we went to England and read it only for 3 days. One of the book that I cannot put down :) I like it because it seemed the story based on a real-life of an air hostess.
Ok...So this isn't the most thought provoking book, but it was super cute and hilarious, and I totally feel in love with Annie. And a lot of the air hostess part of the book was spot on. A really fun, fast, cute easy read!
