What did I just read? This is one messed up and twisted story that was hard to read at times. I would say that this is not a book you particularly enjoy, but it will keep you intrigued and surprised.

Crystal is young, damaged woman. She was not treated well by her father and is abused both mentally and physically by her husband Richard Connor. When an unplanned pregnancy forces her to marry Richard she hoped that her life would change for the better. She did not expect anything like she got. Richard is mean, cruel and uses Crystal as a punching bag. After her gives birth to a stillborn baby she is heartbroken. The next morning she discovers that her husband has gone missing. She struggles between being worried about him, fearful for his return and happy at her sudden freedom. Between flashbacks and weird and dark dreams we learn about Crystal and her frame of mind. And ending that will surprise you.

Thank you to the author L.A Detwiler for sending me a copy of this book to read. I look forward to reading more of her books.

This novel had powerful writing, very intense sequences, a tragic tone. But it is not for me and I found it mentally straining to continue reading. ARC provided by NetGalley. Thank you.

A Tortured Soul

📚 Hello Book Friends! A TORTURED SOUL by L.A. Detwiler was a dark and twisted book. Written mostly in the voice of Crystal, you discover her deep emotional pain after the still-birth of her son, Gideon, and the mistreatment of his poor little dead body by her abusive husband. This book is not for the faints of hearts. I was tempted many times to stop reading because Crystal’s story was just too overwhelming and upsetting. I literally read this book by looking at the pages between my fingers like when you watch a scary movie. I finished the book because I had to know what really happened. Although the ending was very disturbing, it brought closure to the story.

If you are a fan of very dark psychological books, this one is for you. Just don’t read it when you are alone at night… you might not be able to go to sleep.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Thank you, L.A. Detwiler for sending me an ecopy of your book. A TORTURED SOUL by L.A. Detwiler is now available at your favourite bookstore.

⁣A Tortured Soul is a darkly twisted domestic thriller full of psychological suspense and horrific nightmares.⁣

This book was really intense, as it SHOULD be. Domestic abuse is a REAL thing and therefore should not be portrayed in a “comfortable” way. I’m glad the author chose to execute the story the way she did. Because of this, the book does contain some graphic (and possibly triggering) scenes that will definitely make this a heavy read for even the toughest domestic thriller fans. ⁣Because the author stays so close to a realistic viewpoint of the characters - the book naturally falls within the “thriller” category. And just when you think it couldn’t get better - she concludes the book with an ending you won’t see coming!

The story alternates between Chrystal’s current life with her abusive husband, Richard, and her childhood trauma and abuse from her father. After Chrystal experiences the loss of her child, she struggles to keep depression away and quickly spirals. Soon she realizes that Richard isn’t the only thing that should be feared, and Chrystal’s now in more danger than ever before. ⁣

I’ve read a lot of thrillers lately but this one is the most intense I’ve read in quite some time. The author does a fantastic job executing the dialogue and the writing is truly excellent as well. If you can handle its haunting scenes and gripping plot that stays with you long after you finish.... then this book might be just for you! ⁣

A huge thank you to the fantastic @ladetwiler for asking me to review her upcoming thriller and for gifting me the e-book. I was truly honoured!

I read this book in just two sittings. I just could not put it down!

A Tortured Soul is a gripping dark, psychological thriller that follows Crystal, a victim of horrific domestic abuse. Her drunk husband Richard, beats the life out of her and makes her life a misery. Crystal had already suffered from an abusive childhood and then to end up married to an evil bully makes her feel even weaker and alone. Her mental state worsens after losing two babies.

One day her husband disappears which he has always has a habit of doing but this time Crystal feels in her gut that something is wrong and that he may be in trouble. It becomes apparent he is involved in all kinds of dodgy dealings when strange people come knocking at her door asking where he is and threatening her. Will Richard come back? Will Crystal find out exactly what he has been up to but more importantly will she escape her life of torment?

This is a very intense, unsettling domestic thriller that is written in the present but with flashbacks to Crystal’s childhood where she suffered abuse from her parents and also from her night terrors she experiences which are I will admit very gory! Some descriptions of torture in the book actually had me wincing and I found some parts so shocking that I couldn’t believe what Crystal was going through.

Overall, A Tortured Soul is a very cleverly written, twisted and heartbreaking read that I highly recommend to any thriller fans. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s books in the future.

Thank you to L.A. Detwiler for sending me an ARC of her book!

A Tortured Soul is truly the most accurate description of this book. Crystal Holt has an unplanned pregnancy that seals her fate with Richard Connor. After suffering under her abusive "religious" father for years, Crystal thinks she's finally found freedom in Richard. Unfortunately, Richard may be even worse than Crystal's father. Crystal suffers more physical and emotional abuse with Richard.

This books alternates between Crystal's demons from the past and Crystal's current nightmares. The nightmares are truly sickening, but may not be much more horrific than her current circumstances. When her husband Richard goes missing, she's in a constant fear for his return, yet joyful in her new freedom.

Things are not always as they seem and the twist in the end of this book felt like a triumph for me. Although it was slightly predictable on some level, I thought this was a well-written novel with lots of frightening detail. I look forward to reading more from this author!

“Life is an unhampered train that just keeps chugging. It’ll run you over if you don’t get out of the way. I have no choice but to duck, take cover, and get ready for the next phase. I don’t know how this story will end. I know where it started, though. And I know that it’s not over yet. It’s nowhere near being over just yet.”

This story was very dark and difficult to read at times. Being in Crystal’s head through most of this book as an abused and broken wife was very disturbing. Haven’t been brought up in an abusive household she thinks her marriage to Richard will be an escape but it ends up being a new cycle of abuse and torment.

3/5 stars only because this story felt more like a horror story than a thriller to me which is slightly out of my realm. Overall very well written and awesome character development.

Thank you to L.A. Detwiler for sending me a copy of this book!

This is one very dark and very twisted tale!
Crystal has grown up with very religious and abusive parents so when she meets Richard at his auto repair shop she hopes he could be her savior. Things don't always go as planned. Richard it turns out is even worse than her parents, much worse.
I'm not really a squeamish reader but I have to admit some passages set me on edge, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as it goes to the authors intent of making the reader feel for Crystal's situation. Told effectively in the first person, going from present with recollections of the past and ensuing nightmares it has almost a frantic quality about it. The writing is gritty and the character development spot on. The tension builds with a steady pace throughout ending with a satisfying conclusion. Although not for everyone, I recommend this one to those not bothered by graphic details of abuse and horror.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the ARC ebook to read, review and enjoy.

As the reader, you are propelled right into this story. What a story it is too. A sad one. I know you probably are not expecting the adjective "sad" to be used when describing a horror book but it is true. The physical, mental, and emotional abuse that Crystal endured from Richard really messed with her. You see this all played out throughout this story.

Every emotion and action that Crystal was experiencing was as if I was experiencing it with her. There were times near the beginning of the story where I did find myself screaming for Crystal to just leave. Why was she staying when she had the opportunity to leave with Richard gone.

When it came to the ending, you could say that I was not surprised. Yet, I did feel satisfied by the ending. While, I may not have "loved" this book, I would read another one from this author.

Warning as this book is hard to read due to the abuse and torture. Not for the faint of heart.

ARC - I want to thank L.A. Detwiler for letting me review this book. It was an honour and a I’m grateful for the chance to experience this story before it’s release August 11 2020
.
This book is brilliant! It takes you on a roller coaster of emotions and at times was difficult to read but in all the right ways. The writing was amazing and really brought you into the mind of Crystal allowing you to feel her rollercoaster journey. I found at times mid way through the book it felt a little repetitive but it made sense as I got closer to the end so hang on and pay attention, it’s worth the journey it takes you on. I would warn anyone who is triggered by child loss and domestic abuse to be aware going into this read they are very prominent and hard to move through but really allow you to connect with Crystal. Highly recommend!

I will preface this by saying I read the first chapter when I was like 2-3 days post partum. It was very emotionally disturbing for me that I had to set it back down. It was INTENSE. I never really thought of myself as someone bothered by graphic abuse or horror, but y’all this one got me!! Everyone has their breaking point, and Crystal girl, you were mine. I felt now I was in a good space to read about (TW: Stillbirth/Postpartum/Infant Death) and was able to finish this is an entire day! ⁣

Y’all, this book was so good! Just because it has a tough read does not mean it was not good. Let me say that right now. You feel for a Crystal, you push and pray and good vibe her to have a happy ending, but it seems the more and more you turn the page, the less and less that chance of a happy life is realistic. The twists in this book were not predictable and I really enjoyed it!! If you’re a Karin Slaughter fan, you’ll definitely want to grab this one. I loved the details in Detwiler’s writing. It was so disturbing and vivid that it was hard to pull away from it. ⁣

A twisted domestic thriller that will shake even the toughest thriller fans... this tag line y’all is 100% right! It shook me to my core! Thank you @ladetwiler for this amazing ARC! This one is out August 11th. Go grab it y’all. ⁣

I have read domestic/pyschological thrillers before, but this is the first that also dealt with domestic abuse. L.A Detwiler did a good job highlighting the mental state and fears of the victim. You really feel what it’s like to be in that situation. In the beginning I had a hard time understanding why Crystal didn’t leave when Richard disappeared, but by the end I understood why it is not easy to just walk away. To be honest I was uncomfortable reading parts of this book.

I did think the book was a little repetitive about certain details. The cleaning, wanting to leave, and reasons to say got talked about a lot. I also think that it would be the thought process of someone in that situation so it was a little eye-opening, but I just didn’t really care for the repetitiveness. While the flashbacks and nightmares were hard to read through because of the abuse, they revealed secrets for both Richard and Crystal that had me really thinking about how it was going to end.

The ending was by far the best part for me and makes it worth the read. It had a huge twist and I only guessed one small part of it. It wrapped everything up very nicely and explained some details that I thought were confusing at the time but made perfect sense knowing the ending.

I was truly honoured to have been contacted by L.A Detwiler to review her new dark psychological
Thriller, due to be released 11th August this year, And after reading the blurb I couldn’t wait to read it.
.
The story follows Crystal, who after coming from an abusive childhood, finds herself trapped in a violent marriage to her drunken husband Richard, and on a downward spiral with her own mental health after losing 2 precious babies.
One day Richard disappears, and it soon becomes apparent that Richard has a lot of dark secrets but maybe he isn’t the only one.
.
Firstly if you are into intensely dark thrillers then this one is defo for you, the story touches on some very unsettling subjects and the gory descriptions reminded me of those from a Chris Carter book. The opening chapter is particularly grim yet gripping!
It’s a very cleverly written book and I enjoyed the story albeit gruesome. Although I did have an inclination on how the plot was going to play out so for this reason I rate the book 4 stars!

Thankyou again L.A.Detwiler , and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for this books release!

When Crystal finds herself pregnant at a young age she has no choice but to marry Richard and start a new life. Not an ideal situation but an escape from her religious and abusive parents brings some new hope. But instead of a fresh start, Crystal finds herself in another abusive situation. Richard is a sadistic, controlling drunk but nothing prepares Crystal for the torment when she has a still birth and Richard disposes of their baby in the woods. When Richard disappears on a bender, something he has previously done, Crystal’s mental state begins to spiral. Grieving from the death of her baby, she begins to have horrific dreams and reliving her past traumas. But with each declining day, she is also finding new strengths and a glimpse of freedom.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of domestic abuse books but this one had a good mix of dark thriller and elements of horror as well. I loved how the story played out and I appreciated some good graphic scenes. Although some parts I found to be a bit repetitive, overall it was well executed and I couldn’t wait to see how the story ended.

A Totured Soul by L. A. Detwiler is a dark thriller that is to be released 8/11/2020. This is my first ARC ebook. Thank you L.A. Detwiler and HarperCollins UK/Avon Books for this opportunity.

⭐⭐⭐

I received this book and read it on my Kindle. I appreciated Detwiler's writing style and found it a quick easy read. Psychological thillers have always been my favorite, however, the main stuggles of Crystal (the main character), I don't typically seek out on my own. Domestic abuse topics tend to make me uncomfortable.

Crystal is exactly what the title of the book is, a tortured soul. She grew up with religiously preoccupied, abusive parents only to escape to a man who became an even bigger abusive, controlling and evil presence in her life. She also struggles with personal loss and has to find a way to survive with absolutely no loving support. This girl just couldn't catch a break. Until, her husband disappears suddenly. But even then she feels no peace and continues to live in fear and uncertainty.

I found this story to be well told, however depressing and heart breaking. Life these days is already filled with such uncertainty and sometimes horror that I found myself struggling to get through this.

If you are looking for a dark thriller with some twists and turns, pick this one up.
Again, thank you @ladetwiler for this advanced copy!!

A Tortured Soul is everything I wanted it to be and everything I didn't expect. It's dark, gritty, intense, and uncomfortable. Nothing about this story is pretty, but it's not meant to be. This story is honest and real. It'll take you down a desolate path and leave you bedraggled at the end.

The writing is exquisite. Yes, that's a tall order, and Detwiler delivers.

This is not a fast-paced thriller but, again, it's not meant to be. Pacing is steady as tension builds. I was pulled inside the story, living it, breathing it, experiencing it, every step of the way. The twists sent me spinning. The content derailed me.

If you like dark fiction with strong character development and intensity that keeps you on edge, this book's for you.

A Tortured Soul

“Everyone has a breaking point.”

Wow! Wow! Wow! I was asked by L.A. Detwiler to review an ARC of A Tortured Soul, which I gladly accepted.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but there were definitely parts that made me sick to my stomach, so if you have a weak stomach, you might want to read with caution. The things that Crystal had to endure during her lifetime with an abusive husband was sickening. There were times when I had to stop reading, take a deep breath and reflect. There were times I was screaming at Crystal to get out of the house and run! I have never been in an abusive situation so I have no right or knowledge to express feelings of fleeing but I just wanted her to be safe.

As the story continues, I just can’t understand why she isn’t taking the opportunity she is presented with to leave and start over. I don’t want to give away too much or reveal any spoilers but let’s just say the revenge is sweet in the end and as horrible as it sounds, Richard got what he deserved!

A TORTURED SOUL by L. A. Detwiler is a psychological thriller about a woman struggling in her life dealing with an abusive husband and a stillborn birth. This was truly a dark and twisted domestic thriller premise wise however the twists weren’t shocking to me. The novel is told mostly as an inner monologue with many questions and wonderings. There was a lot of repetition. I found myself cringing during many parts but luckily it was a quick read. I don’t think I will be reading any more domestic thrillers dealing with abuse from now on. If you can handle the content and love thrillers then you might enjoy this one.

TW: domestic abuse, sexual violence, rape, assault, murder

If you enjoy psychological thrillers, you’ll want to read this book. Told from the perspective of Crystal, she details her life as an abused woman. She grew up with abusive parents, married an abusive man, and lives her life being abused. But when she loses her baby, things change. Her husband leaves, which isn’t unusual, and she is left alone. She doesn’t know how much time she has until he reappears, but she starts to enjoy some things she hasn’t been able to since he left. But when people start looking for him, the story gets a lot more complicated, and Crystal starts to unravel.

Before I get too far into this, I want everyone to take my trigger warnings seriously. This book is graphic. The author did not sugar coat anything, and the topics touched on are very serious and could seriously impact someone if they aren’t prepared. So be very mindful as you read this book. Moving along, I was captivated by this book almost from the beginning. My heart ached for Crystal, between her parents and her husband she really had no chance at happiness in life, especially after she lost the baby. There are some chapters where she flashes back and some that depict, I believe, when she is dreaming while her husband is gone. It adds extra dimension to the story, which I think helped a lot.

Let me say again, this book is graphic. There were points where it was too much for me. I don’t read many thrillers, but I have to imagine the descriptions were above average graphic for the genre. It served a purpose though, it clearly shows all the abuse Crystal went through, and the result.

Thank you to the author for providing an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really can't put into words what this book made me think.
Sad, confused, judgmental, worried.... it really got me thinking.

Crystal being the devoted wife & mother everyone thought she should be.
Well she was devoted because if anyone could stay in that type of situation is devoted. It's sad! But she does it for her child! So I could totally relate to that.

This book goes inside the mind of Crystal & what mental & physical abuse does to another person. We think we know.... but we have no idea!
The way abuse impacts someone.
I couldn't even begin to imagine.
And does it impact Crystal?
She spirals out of control. And totally loses her S****!
Do I blame her?
Absolutely NOT!

It really hit me at the ending....
The Sheriff who comes to Crystal's house.
Everyone in town knew the type of person Richard was! Out of control, fighting, abusing his wife, the town drunk!
But no one did anything to help or save her. They turned a blind eye. When someone could have done something. Maybe Crystal's ending would have been different!

I finished this thriller super quick because it was hard to put down. The writing was great and I loved how dark the story was. (I’m one of those people who loves dark and twisty stories). Most of the story was written in the present with some parts that showed flashbacks of Crystal’s past. I loved finding out more about Crystal’s ugly past and it made me understand her better. My only dislikes about this book are that it was predictable and it was a bit too gory for my liking (but that’s a personal issue). All in all, I enjoyed reading this thriller :)

A story about Crystal and the hell she has to endure beginning with her parents and then her abusive husband. After losing her child at birth, her husband went missing mysteriously. And the dark secrets began to unfold. ⁣

I am not going to deny, but I was very heartbroken with Crystal, what she went through is abominable. This book tackles domestic abuse, and it did a fantastic job. I was very shocked with the ending and the revelation. The story is well-written and tons of references, very intense, and it is a fascinating and enjoyable read. I really like i

I was offered to read an ARC e-copy of A Tortured Soul, by none other than L.A. Detwiler herself!
So thankful and honoured to read in exchange for my review. Thank you!
This one sure does check off all the stars for the psychological thriller loving reader.
As the synopsis goes … Everyone has a breaking point.
Meet Chrystal: At twenty, she battles with the demons of abuse, dark childhood memories, and a declining mental state worsened by horrific nightmare sequences.
Meet Richard: A cynic, a drunk, and a poor monstrous man.
When Richard disappears, like he’s done so many times before, this time things feel very different… Will Crystal be able to escape from a lifetime of torture unscathed, or will she succumb to the dark secrets she's fallen prey to before?
I really liked this book!! I literally could not put it down. At times so annoyed with Chrystal yet very sympathetic towards her abused mind. Many twists left me wanting answers quicker than the book revealed but the writing style kept me engaged. I cannot mention what because I’m no spoiler … but I did guess one twisted aspect of this book but wasn’t sure until the very end.
For those reasons, I was torn between 4-5 rating. But I cannot deny that I really loved this book regardless so five horrific stars it is!!!

I consider L.A. Detwiler to be one of the most exciting and essential author's of today. She was recently awarded the Reader's Favorite bronze medal for The Diary of a Serial Killer's Daughter, in the genre of psychological thrillers. I commend L.A. Detwiler in her pursuit to deliver stories that are raw and uncensored.

A Tortured Soul is another award-worthy novel that is not diluted for the masses. And I believe that this is the ONLY way to tell a story about the real horrors of domestic abuse/violence. The struggles of Crystal needs to be told in our schools system at the high school level. This is a psychology 101 course of the horrors of physical, psychological, and verbal abuse in any domestic setting. I just can't express more the need to tell you to grab a copy and read.

WHAT I LOVED: • This is one of the best domestic thrillers I’ve ever read! It had me hooked from the prologue and not once did I feel bored or that the story was dragging. Such a perfect pace! I even had to take a minute in the first couple of chapters... it took my breath away how accurate the description of the circumstance was. • And the ending! I had this weird, messed up satisfied grin on my face the last few chapters. This ticked all the boxes for me and did not disappoint! .
