Jedes Jahr lese ich gern einen richtig stimmungsvollen Weihnachtskrimi, am liebsten einen, der auf einem englischen Landsitz spielt. "Die Morde von Mapleton" hat mich recht gut unterhalten, leider war Weihnachten an sich kaum Thema, Ausgangspunkt der Handlung ist zwar der Weihnachtsabend, für die Handlung an sich ist dies aber nur am Rande wichtig. Abgesehen davon, dass ich mir "mehr Weihnachten" gewünscht hätte, war auch die Auflösung etwas zu unwahrscheinlich für meinen Geschmack.
Sprache und Handlung haben mir aber ein paar sehr nette winterliche Lesestunden beschert, wofür sich dieser Roman drei Sterne verdient hat.

Gediegen!

Ein ruhiger, wunderbarer Kriminalfall , bedächtig und detailreich erzählt. Und sehr bedächtig habe ich ihn dann auch bewusst gelesen.

Ein - aus heutiger Sicht - altmodischer Krimi in antiquierter Sprache. Und auch mit längst überholten Werten :) Aber tatsächlich war es ein pures Lesevergnügen! Ein weihnachtlicher Krimi aus dem Jahr 1929, der sicher irgendwann erneut gelesen wird.

Und sollte der DuMont-Verlag sich dazu entschliessen, doch noch den einen oder anderen Anthony Bathurst - Fall herauszubringen: ich wär dabei!

Ich hab diesen britischen Krimi sehr genossen! Er hat mir total die Cluedo, Agatha Christie und Krimidinner Stimmung gegeben und mich super unterhalten. Die Geschichte ist nicht actiongeladen erzählt, dafür umso stimmungsvoller und atmosphärischer. Ich konnte mir die einzelnen Schauplätze richtig gut vorstellen und habe die alte Sprache und damaligen Gepflogenheiten als sehr unterhaltsam empfunden. Das einzig weihnachtliche an dem Krimi ist allerdings, dass das Dinner, bei dem auf unerklärliche Weise ein Mord geschieht, zu Heiligabend stattfindet. Aber auch dieses ist recht neutral gehalten und man kann dieses Buch wirklich zu jeder Jahreszeit lesen.

Ich hab das Buch in 2 Tagen durchgelesen, aber nicht weil es so spannend war, dass ich es nicht weglegen konnte, sondern weil ich krank bin und deshalb nichts besseres zu tun habe und weil ich mein Goodreads Leseziel sonst nicht geschafft hätte.

Das Buch hat sich sehr in die Länge gezogen, ich fand es anstrengend zu lesen.
Ich hab fr nach fast jedem Kapitel die übrigbleibenden Seiten gezählt und ausgerechnet, wie lange es noch dauert WEIL ICH ENDLICH WOLLTE DASS ES VORBEI IST !
Die deutsche Übersetzung und die Redensarten der Charaktere fand ich bisschen nervig manchmal.

Es war aber ein gemütliches Buch und die Aufklärung am Ende fand ich sehr spannend, war auch sehr invested die letzen 60 Seiten (aber leider auch erst da).
Ich lebe für die Plottwists und mochte deshalb auch hier das Ende so gerne, vor allem, die eingebaute Festnahmeszene zwischen den beiden Aufklärungsszenen.
Trotzdem fand ich den Schritt zwischen den Ermittlungen, die der Leser noch mitbekommen hat, und der ersten Aufklärung im Vernon House zu groß.

I am afraid that I cannot share Steve Barge's enthusiasm for this book at all (or for Brian Flynn in general for that matter). The author does not play fair with the reader in any way and the story is totally lacking in credibility. In fact, I would say it is ridiculous. It would be impossible to say why without completely giving the game away. The language is what I would describe as "overly formal" which is alright for a while but does begin to pall a bit as the book goes on.

Such as-

"He brushed his nostrils with the back of his hand, after the manner of his class, and sniffed resentfully"

"Mr Bathurst, proof against feminine allurement, schooled himself to remember that this was the lady who had sat next to Sir Eustace at dinner at that gentleman's especial request. It was upon these lines that he desired to question her"

Amongst others the words - "facinorous" and "pleonastic" appeared: neither of which was familiar to me.

There were also some sayings which I hadn't come across before -

"It’s all Lombard Street to a china orange on it"
&
"I’d wager a pony to a dried pea"

I wouldn't have minded about the language if the plot had been even remotely believable.

eigentlich 3.5, also fast 4 sterne!
Das Buch hat sich in der Mitte leider ein bisschen gezogen, aber die Auflösung am Ende hat es gerettet. Gegen Ende hin konnte ich schon ein bisschen erahnen wer es war aber die eigentlich komplette Auflösung zu erraten war dann doch zu schwer (🤭) und hat mir deswegen sehr gefallen.
Von den Charakteren her mochte ich am meisten natürlich Anthony Bathurst, vor allem weil er komplett schlauer als dieser nervige Craig war.

Ich fand den ruhigen britischen Krimi wirklich unterhaltsam und nett, dass die von der Polizei verhörten Personen sämtlich ohne Druck höflich Auskunft gaben und hilfreich waren; es ist diese Art von Geschichte. Der charakter-differenzierten Darstellung von Michael Schwarzmeier habe ich gern zugehört.

Inhalt: Im Herrenhaus von Mapleton wird Weihnachten gefeiert. Sir Eustace Vernon hat zum Dinner geladen. Doch die festliche Stimmung wird empfindlich durch eine Nachricht in einem Knallbonbon gestört. Sir Vernon verlässt die Dinnergesellschaft und als nach Mitternacht ein Schrei die Nacht durchschneidet, wissen alle Anwesenden, dass etwas grässliches geschehen sein muss.

Art des Buches: Ein Weihnachtskrimi

Wie fand ich das Buch? Mich konnte das Buch sehr schnell fesseln. Die Atmosphäre des Landhauses hatte mich gefangen genommen. Doch hinter die Lösung dieses Krimis zu kommen, war gar nicht so einfach, ständig schlug die Handlung Haken und so konnte mich das Ende dann doch tatsächlich noch überraschen. Es braucht halt einen scharfsinnigen Ermittler, wie Anthony Bathurst, der das ganze Knäuel an Vermutungen entwirrt um den Täter zu entlarven.

Leider kann ich mich den vielen guten Meinungen über das Buch nicht anschließen. An sich ein guter Kriminalfall, doch leider hat mir der altmodische Schreibstil überhaupt nicht gefallen, zumal sich bei der Übersetzung einige neuzeitliche Worte eingeschlichen haben, die es damals so wohl noch nicht gegeben hat.
Anthony Bathurst ist mir als Ermittler viel zu arrogant und überheblich. Anstatt mit Inspector Craig zusammenzuarbeiten lässt er ihn oft auflaufen. Über die sanfte und oft zurückhaltende Art der Befragung, insbesondere der Damen, musste ich mich doch wundern. Selbst für einen Cosy-Krimi war das Zuviel des Guten.
Mal abgesehen davon , daß die Geschichte um die Weihnachtszeit spielt, fehlte mir doch die stimmungsvolle Atmosphäre um das Buch als „wohligen Weihnachtskrimi“ zu empfehlen.

Reading the introduction was very helpful, it explains some word usage (bonbon) of the time and some of Flynn's takes on how to make detective stories more engaging; emphasizing what he thought was missing from the writing of the time. And what that means is a really tight story without a lot of asides or long passages of dialogue etc... It most certainly does make the puzzle aspect very clear and you have to try and keep up with the pace of clues that come at you.

Enjoyable to read, you still see the people as you would see them- grumpy or haughty etc... that is not missing. The detective (Anthony Bathurst) has the ability to find that one item that links to the solution and he actually points it out toward the end before the reveal - so it is fair play.

The plot does begin on Christmas Eve, and while the holiday doesn't feature big (eg- singing or gifts etc..) in the story- the holiday and it's timing and how people make decisions upon it--- that is crucial to events that take place.

If you like puzzles where you are challenged to figure out a solution- I would say Flynn is an author you may want to read. The fact that the clues and situation, while not flourished are presented in clear detail and Flynn does succeed in creating a story that moves and has a sense of urgency.

Many of his books have been "reprinted" and are e-books as well.

To start of with the positive: the investigation did hold my attention and made me fly through it fast, the characters were decent and I enjoy this kind of mystery and writing in general. However, from the beginning, the novel lacked a certain je ne sais quoi, a unique charm, a bit of meat on its bones. The beginning feels too fast-paced to really establish place, atmosphere and characters, just so the middle can slow down and tell us a million times that there isnt really any progress. It's also not a mystery were you can perfectly guess along and the ending felt arbitrary to me since it took most of the book to even hint in that direction. Also, I feel like the potential of the big cast was wasted.

Dieser altmodische whodunit-Krimi war in meiner #schmökerbox und da ich grad in der Stimmung für "nix mit Technik und Psycho" war, passte es gut.

Der Krimi wurde schon 1929 geschrieben und das merkt man auch der deutschen Übersetzung an. Ich vermutlich mal, das englische Original ist ähnlich hölzern, daher ist das kein Vorwurf.
Die Handlung zieht sich etwas; es wird unglaublich viel gelabert. Mit CSI und Verfolgungsjagden etc. ist hier nicht zu rechnen ;)
Dann werden der Leserin immer mal wieder ermittlungstechnische Brotkrumen hingeworden, aber am Ende, beim großen Reveal, ist dann doch alles ganz anders.

Ich war gut unterhalten, würde weitere Fälle mit Anthony Bathurst aber vermutlich eher im Original lesen. Wobei diese Ausgabe vom Dumont-Verlag schon sehr schön gemacht ist.

This is apparently the fourth is a series of mysteries investigated by a sleuth called Anthony Bathurst, who seems like a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Lord Peter Wimsey. Perhaps I should have started with one of the earlier books, because I couldn't work out who he was or why Scotland Yard would let him be involved.

I found it oddly paced: the first part reads almost like a farce with people running around a grand house on Christmas Eve dealing with dead bodies, screaming maids and a missing host; then it slows down considerably while Bathurst and the police take their own sweet time solving the puzzle. And the mystery of the dead butler is never really investigated; Bathurst just announces at the end, "Oh, and this happened."

Still, it kept me entertained on a lazy Boxing Day afternoon, and that's all I was asking of it.

(It also features the sentence "It's all Lombard Street to a china orange on it, to my idea", which is a collection of words I'd never previously contemplated together, but apparently means "heavily weighted odds".)

A fairly enjoyable fourth outing for Anthony Bathurst, here coming across a body on a railway line, which leads to an investigation of a complex crime.

For reasons probably more personal than literary, I found this harder going than the first three and I do not think the author was entirely fair on the reader. I had a good inkling of the solution in general but I think there was a bit too much obfuscation. Incidentally I found the author's use of language somewhat trying-"facinorous" and "pellucid" appeared on one page and there was some fatuous play on Albert Fish's name.

Complicated, but not in an interesting and involving way.

On Christmas Eve, Sir Eustace Vernon hosts a dinner party, though he seems out of spirits and withdraws, promising to join them later in the evening. He does not appear and, in succession, a maid is frightened by a mysterious, knife-wielding figure, Sir Eustace's butler is found dead - and discovered to be a woman (I have learned that there is a sub-genre of Golden Age mysteries loosely known as "cross dressing mysteries for the use of this plot device.) Later,the body of Sir Eustace himself is found, and on the body of the gentleman and his butler is found a red foil bonbon with a threatening.
Sir Austin Kemble, Commissioner of Police is called in and is assisted by Anthony Bathhurst, author Flynn's series amateur detective.
The plot opens in the classic manor house style, and ends with a fairly clever plot twist, but the "in-between" is overlong, with spans of conversations, repetitions and not terribly logical or insightful deductions from Bathhurst, one of the post-Holmes series detectives that sprang up in the wake of Conan Doyle. As for the motive and the twist, so much of it is crammed into the last section, with so few clues to keep a reader intrigued that readers may be tempted to skip much of the overlong, repetitive midsection and get to the end.
I was not familiar with Flynn, who authored nearly 60 novels; unfortunately, this book was not really an inducement to seek out others in his series.

Sir Eustace Vernon hat zum Weihnachtsdinner geladen. Doch mitten während des Essens verlässt er die Gesellschaft auf Grund einer sehr unschönen Nachricht und taucht nicht wieder auf. Dafür wurde wohl in seinem Arbeitszimmer eingebrochen und außerdem wurde auch Purvis der Butler umgebracht.

Sir Austin Kemble, der Polizeichef und Anthony Bathurst sind gerade gemeinsam in der Gegend unterwegs und finden an einem Bahnübergang eine Leiche, die wohl Sir Eustace Vernon ist. So in diesen Fall involviert beginnen die beiden mit ihren Ermittlungen die örtlich Polizei zu unterstützen.

Das Buch ist ein klassischer englischer Krimi in Stile Agatha Christies. Der Autor war ein ein Zeitgenosse von ihr, das Buch erschien erstmals 1929 und man merkt ihm bei der Wortwahl deutlich an, dass das Buch schon etwas älter ist. Wir begleiten die Ermittlungen rund um das mysteriöse Verschwinden von Eustace Vernon und dessen Tod. Allerdings bekommt man als Leser keinen Einblick in die Gedankenwelt der Ermittler. Das macht da mitraten schwer und ich bin bis zum Ende nicht auf die etwas trickreiche Auflösung des Falls gekommen.

Alles in allem war es ein schönes und flüssig zu lesendes Buch, das mich mit ins England der zwanziger Jahre auf dem Land mitgenommen hat.

As far as I'm concerned, a humdrum mystery. The contrast between the plodding, insecure police officer (Inspector Craig) and the suave amateur detective with private means (Anthony Bathurst) is a classic in this genre, and this book brings nothing original to the tale. The setting at Christmas in a country manor, with assembled guests and large domestic staff, is equally classic, and again this book adds nothing to the genre.

Multiple inexplicable things happen - Sir Eustace Vernon disappears suddenly from the dinner table, Christmas crackers in hand, only to be found run over by a train later that night. His butler is found poisoned in the pantry, and turns out to be a woman to boot ! A local merchant is set upon by two ruffians in the same night, and an unusual type of tobacco is found in the grounds. Anthony Bathurst collects clues and dispenses oracular intimations that he understands it all. It's annoying enough when Hercule Poirot does it, but in this case I found it close to insufferable. Supersleuths of the amateur type actually amuse me, but they have to have some character, some originality (like Lord Peter Wimsey or Albert Campion).

Enjoyable enough read I thought but nothing that really gripped me.
The writer of the introduction obviously likes and sees things in this writer that I do not. As based on the first 4 novels in the series, not that any of them were terrible by any measure, but I have found them just okay. Entertaining yes but nothing really memorable tbh.
This storyline felt very familiar, of course quite a few years have passed since original publication so the ideas are almost certain to have been used by other authors but still….

Overall this was an okay read, passed the time, wasn’t a bad plot or characters but had nothing to really make it stand out for me at least.
I will probably continue with the series.

Sir Eustace Vernon is holding a Christmas Eve party for a group of close friends and family. Despite the joyful scene he as reason to worry according to his niece Helen Ashley. When his butler Purvis is found murdered and Sir Eustace has vanished Inspector Craig is called in to investigate. Police Commissioner Sir Austin Kemble also calls in his friend Anthony Bathgate. Brian Flynn once again writes a clever whodunit which most of the book keeps the reader intrigue but once again he provides a solution that very of audience would understand. I except that Bathgate works on another level but give the reader a chance!

First German book read in many years (basically my last non-technical German book was a fairy tales collection, read in primary school).
It was supposed to help me with my vocabulary, pronunciation and spoken language and I think it did all of these. But story-wise it wasn’t the best.
I would say it was a classic Miss Marple murder investigation and i got to pick it up because it promised a Christmas murder. Unfortunately, Xmas was only mentioned in the first chapter so i missed the cosy feeling. But overall a nice and easy read

Das Buch war in meinem Adventskalender und es war genau das richtige für die Weihnachtszeit.
Ein klassischer Krimi, ohne viel Blut, dafür aber mit vielen Hinweisen, die einladen, mitzurätseln und zu versuchen, den Mörder zu entlarven.
Das Setting und der Schreibstil haben mich etwas an Agatha Christie erinnert.
Die Sprache ist etwas auf alt getrimmt, das hat mir gut gefallen, auch wenn man sich an einigen Stellen etwas konzentrieren musste.
Insgesamt hat es mich gut unterhalten.

Schöner, alter, englischer Krimi mit interessantem Ende. Ich liebe dieses Setting einfach. Winter, Weihnachten, England und Mord. Eine Kombi die immer aufgeht. Leider etwas unglückliche Namen: Inspector Bathurst. Bis 48% war ich sicher, er heisst Brathurst und dann habe ich folglich nur noch Inspector Bratwurst gelesen. So funktioniert mein Hirn. Wie soll man einen Detectiv der Bratwurst heißt ernst nehmen??? Wahre Geschichte.

A house party at Christmas ends with two bodies turning up both inside and outside the premises. What might initially look like a couple of suicides are actually found to be murders. The story is complex and with enough quirky and odd touches to keep the reader wondering and guessing right up to the author's customary shock reveal. Great entertainment.

Enjoyable read although I think it was rather easy to work out who and how. I do like Flynn's books but feel that I couldn't read them one after the other as I find Anthony Bathurst to be rather irritating. Certainly I understood Inspector Craig's reaction to him. Also as there isn't a 'Watson' figure who could ask Bathurst questions we have to make do with his nods to himself and not finding out about things he arranged to happen until the very end. If the answer hadn't been as easy I would certainly feel that Flynn hadn't been fair.

Bathurst is an amateur sleigh who assists Scotland Yard. This story is well written and though I guessed part of the mystery, I did not guess all. Good fun in the cozy English manor house murder style of mystery. Recommended

Wer Edgar Wallace mag, wird dieses Buch lieben: Sympathische Ermittler, viele interessante Akteure und zahlreiche Wendungen bis zum Schluss.
Der Mordzeitpunkt der ' Heiligen Nacht' entwickelt sich zum 'Maskenball'!
