Not at all what I expected!
This was a first for me with this type of book, so I am not sure what books of this nature generally look like. I guess I expected more pictures and more fond reminiscing of episodes. There are quite a few pictures and drawings of the characters from Supernatural, but the book is more about the lingering affects the show on peoples lives, including the stars, guest stars and fans.
The chapters are in essay format and many talk specifically about one episode while others deal with the show as a whole and how the show dealt with certain subjects like people with disabilities (i.e. Bobby Singer in a wheelchair) and the deaf (Shoshannah Stern) who played Eileen.
So Shoshannah tells a story which includes details about where she was in life when she was hired for Supernatural, the fact that ASL is her first language and that is a language that very few people know, how she often gets asked and has to answer stupid questions about her deafness (i.e. what it feels like to not be able to hear) and she goes on to talk explain the fact that she is not getting cochlear implants and wants everyone to know so people don’t keep coming up to her and letting her know that it is an option for her to look into. She says she went through a period of grieving when she found out her character of Eileen was going to die.
The book also has stories of friends made online by connecting through Supernatural, couples formed from Supernatural and the author’s experiences where she wonders where she would be now if she hadn’t watched that first episode of Supernatural, she also discusses some psychological effects of a show like Supernatural. We as fans feel like we are inviting good friends or family into our homes each week as we watch. I certainly know this feeling because even as I stopped watching all TV a few years back when I got really big into reading, Supernatural was the one show I continued to watch week after week. I will be one that will sorely miss Sam and Dean!
The book has some good stories and it covers topics like how women have been portrayed in the media and how they became more powerful on Supernatural. We saw a lot of very powerful women such as Jo Harvelle, Mary Winchester, Sheriff Jodi Mills and her group of hunter girls. Where at the beginning when the show began, women were seen mostly as daughters, wives and mothers.
The show also had a LGBTQIA presence with characters like Cesar and Jessie who were not your stereotypical gay couple because they were tough and hunters, as well as lesbian characters like Charlie Bradbury. I enjoyed some of the stories and it brought back memories of quite a few episodes and characters that I loved. However it also had a lot of extraneous information that I didn’t care about. I think the stories could possibly have been edited better to be more succinct and to the point as well as sticking to supernatural a bit more and not going of on odd tangents.

There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done highlights the impact Supernatural has had on the lives of both actors and fans over the past fifteen years. Whether a specific episode made fans feel seen, sometimes for the first time, or if they’ve been superfans from the beginning, this TV series has grown into something I don’t think anyone ever expected.
This book has demonstrated to me just how limited my Supernatural fandom has been compared to others. I’ve never been to a convention. I’ve never made Supernatural artwork. I’ve never written fan fiction. I’ve never connected with my favourite actors on social media.
But I have loved this show. I’ve laughed and cried through episodes. I’ve watched favourite characters die, and sometimes come back. I’ve worn my Represent shirt less than I’d like to, so it doesn’t wear out too soon. I’ve read every interview of Jared’s I can find where he references mental health. I’ve drooled over my fair share of cast photos. I’ve reused my 2018 calendar for the second time this year because I like the pictures in it more than recent ones.
I also have the benefit of having loved and lost many TV shows before this one. I know the joy of rediscovering favourite episodes and finding new ones years after I first watched them. Supernatural is not the only beloved show I’m losing this year (2020 just keeps on giving) but I have fifteen years worth of Winchester binge watching at my fingertips. Sam, Dean and all of the other characters I’ve welcomed into my fiction family over the years aren’t really going anywhere; they’ll be there whenever I need them.

Supernatural leaves behind a fundamentally changed group of people, inspired to do good, be weird, and be kind.Fans have made lifelong friends, changed their career, been inspired to write and create, and found family. Online communities have sprung up, interactions at conventions have solidified friendships and so much money has been raised for charity.
Supernatural does not sugarcoat the painful aspects of lifeReminding us to ‘Always Keep Fighting’, regardless of our circumstances, and encouraging us to leave the world better than we found it, Supernatural has been one hell of a road trip.
As we watched Bobby Singer face his physical limitations, we also watched Dean Winchester struggle for psychological healing after trauma, and we also saw Sam Winchester battle his addiction.This book includes photos of the cast, fan art and quite possibly the best Supernatural shirt I’ve seen, “Sam and Dean Winchester - Keeping gay girls just a little bit straight since 2005”.

While the intention of this book was to be a cushion for the blow of the season finale for our beloved show, Supernatural, now it is a warm and perfect coffee date. Yes, Supernatural didn't come to the end we were prepared for, but as is with our brothers, nothing quite goes as planned. Not even the end of our show.
Instead, sit back with your coffee, tea, water, Family Business beer... *side eye* and read these FAMAZING stories about the cast, crew, and fans of Supernatural. Lynn and her team did an amazing job with these stories using inclusivity, humor, and heart. All the things that make Supernatural what it has become over the years.
I cried reading some of these. I laughed at a ton of them, because what is SPN without laughter? The bookends are exactly what you'd expect from this collection of amazing people. Jared to start us off with emotion and sweetness and Jensen closes it with a sincere and no nonsense style we've come to love.
Some highlights for me: Shoshannah Stern, Amy Hutton, Richard Speight Jr., Lauren Tom, Chad Lindberg, Tahmoh Penikett, and the Hunter Husbands.
But truly, every story deserves to be read. They were all thoughtfully done and beautifully written. We have a very creative and talented group of people under our huge SPNFamily umbrella. And I'm so very thankful for them all.

Fifteen years is a long time to be on a television show. When Jared and I were in our twenties, we went to Vancouver thinking that we'd just put our lives on hold and press pause for maybe a season or two, and then we'd come back, press play, and life would go on.
That's not what happened.

We were on Supernatural when the first iPhone came out. We were on Supernatural when Twitter began. It took a long time before we were confident we'd have another season, but over the years we kept coming back and coming back as they moved us around in the lineup. Some of those slots that we ended up in were the slots they put shows in to die. But we didn't die--the fandom kept us alive. --Jensen Ackles
It was 2005 when I first saw the trailer of this new show called Supernatural which was going to star Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in the lead roles. Jensen and Jared were already quite popular but so far never had a leading role in any TV series. Plus the show was going to be all about hunting supernatural beings and monsters and so I was interested. I started watching and well became a big fan. Then came the demons and angels and this show just took on a whole new level of paranormal/supernatural greatness.
I will admit that I have not watched all the seasons but the simple reason why I think this show became so popular was because of its original storytelling and the commitment of the all the actors/actresses and crew involved with the show. It got translated on screen. The fans saw it, felt it and loved it. Not many fictional TV shows have been made showcasing supernatural myths, urban legends on the level Supernatural did and the show has set a high benchmark.

As a fan of Supernatural this collection gave me the warm and fuzzies.
Lynn and her team did a lovely job of collating these stories, many of which made me laugh out loud.

It was very pleasant to get back into Supernatural this way, through the eyes of the cast and fans reflecting on their experience in the fandom and/or in the show. I really appreciated the contributions of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ members, as they point out the sometimes lack of diversity in the show, but the warmth of the fandom that has always included them.

I came to "Supernatural" a bit late in things. When season 12 was added to Netflix, I decided to see what all the fuss was about, and opted to finally check it out. Three weeks later, when I left my couch and rejoined the world, I was a full convert, drawn into a family I didn't realize I was missing until I was home. The Winchesters and the family they've created for themselves in the ones they care about spoke to a part of me that has always known family wasn't just about blood, it was about the bonds you make with people. More than that, though, the "family" of fans which embraced that sentimentality quickly became a part of my life, too, as so many have found over the last 15 seasons.
I remember where I was and what I was doing when the announcement came out that season 15 would be the last. Does anyone who is a fan not? I was out at a very public event, my "Carry On My Wayward Son" hoodie (part of my daily uniform by that point) on, when two text messages came in back to back from two very different friends that just said "Are you okay?" My heart hiccupped...that's the only way I can describe what happened when I read those texts...and then I noticed a Twitter notification. Suddenly I was surrounded by a thousand other people, crying as quietly as I could as I watched JA, JP and MC announce that season 15 would be the final season.
THERE'LL BE PEACE WHEN YOU ARE DONE is a second collection of stories about our "family", from the fans and also from cast. Both books are not only a great addition to the library of a fan, but they are also a great way to show those who don't "get" our relationships with the show/it's cast what the deeper connection is.

This needs all the stars in the world. I am probably not able to critique it objectively, although given the fact that it is a bundle of interviews of real life people and not at all a fictional work, I don't even think it could be critiqued as such.
Being part of the fandom literally ever since I began to know I have a place in the world (I saw the first episode together with my mum in 2005, when I was literally 5 years old, and it traumatised me), Supernatural surely played a big role in my development as a person. After seeing that first episode, we rewatched it countless times, not keeping up with the show as it aired, only for me to be able to pick it up from the start again 8 years later and never stop since.
Now, Supernatural is about to end. The show is 15 years old and I'm 20. Besides my family, I don't think there's literally anything else that has lasted so much, that remained such a constant throughout my life.
This book made me cry. A whole lot. And I can't wait for the moment I'll hold it in my hand in physical form. It showed me how the fandom made so many people speak up and get out of the toxic relationships they had with themselves and with the world. I wish I had been more active in the fandom way back, it probably would've made me believe in myself and in my passions more, something I'd struggled with for my whole life.
Nonetheless, the show still empowered me. It is something I'll always keep in my heart and in my life. I am so glad this show exists. Because no matter if it ends this year, or the following year, it will keep existing. The SPNFamily will never end.
I recommend any die-hard Supernatural to read this book and I can't wait to get my hands on this one, as well as all the other books on this subject that are out there.

With accolades from every corner of the Supernatural world, it is hard to add anything of merit to a review. 15 years of stepping outside their comfort zone to help any and everyone is not only a major achievement, it's a milestone that very few shows hope to reach. That the actors and their characters are both well loved by fans, is almost unheard of. If you've never watched the show, well, you must be living in an alternate universe. I'm sure this is not the last we will see of these brothers and their dedicated efforts to keep us all safe, but we will miss tuning into their world every week.

I am so disappointed with this book. I fully enjoyed the previous one and thought this one would be about the same. It turned into an advertisement for the cons and made me feel more left out of the SPNFamily than ever because I haven't been to one. I also felt the woman narrator sounded a bit preachy.

So I was browsing NetGalley a few weeks ago, checking out the selections (I don’t often request books; my blog is still kind of small and I don’t necessarily think I’ll be approved for many titles, but I like to know what books are out there that I can look forward to!), when the first part of the title of one book reached out and punched me in the face: There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done: Actors and Fans Celebrate the Legacy of Supernatural, edited by Lynn S. Zubernis (BenBella Books, 2020). The song by Kansas has been a long time favorite of mine, so I was immediately curious as to what the book was about, and I was a million times more delighted when I read the rest of the title and learned that this was a collection of essays about the CW show Supernatural, a show my husband and I binge-watched two years ago on Netflix and which I’ve enjoyed ever since. The book was offered as a ‘Read Now,’ and I happily clicked the button. (And since I was pulled in by the title, I’m counting this as my read for the 2020 PopSugar Reading Challenge prompt of ‘a book you picked because the title caught your attention.’)
Lynn S. Zubernis has edited a collection of essays and interviews by both cast and crew members and fans that speak to not only the brilliancy of the show, but the camaraderie and deep friendship that has blossomed among its ardent fans. Cast, crew, and fans alike refer to themselves as family (the SPNFamily, to be exact), and in every essay, their bonds are made obvious by the love the fans show each other, the charity work that every person even loosely associated with this show is moved to participate in, the deep desire to follow Sam and Dean’s footsteps by making the world a better, safer place, and the courage to be open, vulnerable, and thus, free.
The essays run the gamut, from experiences on set and how they changed an actor or actress’s life, to how being part of the fandom helped each fan to grow, but the common theme here are the permanent effects one single TV show has had, and the effects are massive. Far from being a mere aside of pop culture, Supernatural has acted as a catalyst for personal growth, from inspiring fans to keep fighting with the anxiety that has plagued them for years, to pushing them to take steps and make changes that they’d been afraid of taking. For a show that carried on for fifteen seasons, that’s no small feat, and no small amount of changed lives. The effects of Supernatural are long-ranging.
There’s an awful lot to fall in love with in this book. The actors’ willingness to connect with their fans is truly remarkable, and their essays, in which they detail their involvement in fan conventions and on social media, is absolutely heartwarming. But what really shines is the dedication to charity that this show has fomented among its followers. Almost every essay has some mention of how its author engaged in work that benefited people they never met- fundraising, multiple crisis support networks, helping other fans to pay off devastating medical bills- because that’s what family does, even far-off family you don’t often, or ever, see face-to-face. And the Supernatural fandom is the family everyone deserves.
The book isn’t without its criticism of the show, particularly towards earlier the seasons’ treatment of women. It’s never harsh, but it’s fair, and I appreciated such an even-handed take, because when you love something, you want it to be the very best it can be, and we should all be able to criticize the things we love while still loving them. And there are deep dives into certain characters (Charlie is a particular favorite, but there’s plenty of love for Sheriffs Jody Mills and Donna Hanscum as well) and their far-ranging influence, but my favorite essays were the ones that demonstrate that Supernatural‘s ripple effects are less like a tossed pebble and more akin to a giant bolder dropped into the middle of a lake.
Actor Rob Benedict sharing his experiences with suffering a stroke helped a fan to recognize that she was experiencing similar symptoms, and that pushed her to get medical help in time to save her life. A professor used the show to develop a course that helped veterans suffering from PTSD return to civilian life. Fans crowdfunded gender correction surgery for another fan who had decided to move forward with living his best life. Other fans raised money to start a school in Nicaragua and a children’s center in Haiti. The list go on and on and the stories are no less impressive as the book nears completion. Ms. Zubernis has chosen a set of essays that reveal the depth and heart of a television show about two brothers saving the world from things that go bump in the night (and day!), and its true legacy is the love its fans have extended from the show itself to each other and the world beyond.
If you’re a Supernatural fan, this book, this love letter to not just the show but to you and the friends you’ve made because of it, is one you can’t miss. Even for the casual fan like me, There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done was an utter joy to read: the fandom’s love and connection to each other is evident on every single page, and that kind of love is absolutely what the world needs right now. To be honest, I didn’t want this book to end, and I’m looking forward to reading Ms. Zubernis’s other works at some point as well.

Supernatural has been a phenomenon; a niche show aimed at young men became one of the most blogged about & popular topics on social media - & a majority of the fans are women of all age groups. Personally I haven't gotten very involved in things like fanfic or blogging, it's not my thing. I will say though, that this show got me through some very tough times. It's difficult to put my finger on just what it is about this show that speaks to me but something does & I have never felt this invested in a show before or since.
It was heartwarming to read about people's experiences of fan conventions & what the show & fanbase SPNFamily has meant to them. Some of the actors also give us their take, & the mutual respect & love between the actors & the fans is apparent. Yes, there are some toxic elements but every fanbase has its problems that shouldn't tarnish the good that is done through charity fundraising & for making everyone feel part of the community.

December 6, 2020As a person who was only really ever a casual fan of the first few seasons of Supernatural, I can admit that maybe this wasn't really for me. I really liked the variety of perspectives, I think including conversations about disability and the LGBT+ community was really interesting and brought something that casual fans of the show wouldn't have really known about. And I really enjoy that people who were in the show also took part. It made everything feel special. This could be something really great for big Supernatural fans!

This book is about the legacy that is supernatural.
It took me a while to get over myself to read this book. Shortly after the series ended, I opened it and tears came to my eyes.... so I put it down. A lot has changed in the last few years and while reading this book I realized again how much I actually miss this series. Especially Jensen's part brought tears to my eyes again.
Fans and cast/crew talk about what the legacy of the show is for them.... for me? For me the legacy is the lifelong friendships I have found (2 of you are reading this probably - I love you), my love for Dean that will always be a part of me and most of all gratitude because the show and its characters have been with me through hard times. To say it with Jensen's words "Supernatural will never end. The show might, but what it has build? This will never end."

I liked it. There were definitely chapters i felt more connected to then others and that were better. By the end the fan chapters with how conventions had changed their life got a little repetitive. It took a long time to finish as i kinda just lost interrest in the middle after the show ended. But still enjoyed the cast members chapters.

Reading these final thoughts in the weeks leading to the final episode was a great experience. The essays by Jared and Jensen, obviously, stood out the most to me, as well as the parting words from Misha Collins. What a great way to say goodbye!

I am a new fan of Supernatural, having only watched it for the first time this past year. But I definitely fell in love with it. Hard & fast. I picked up this book a few months ago and started reading chapters here and there, and I loved reading the essays of fans, cast and crew and what Supernatural has meant to them. These stories surprised me and also made me love the show and fandom more. What an amazing. loving, accepting, and uplifting community.

If you are a fan of the TV show Supernatural and those hot 🔥 Winchester brothers then this book is perfect for you. In this book we celebrate the shows actors and actresses their triumphs and failures.
It was fun to read first hand accounts of the goings on behind the scenes. The book is full of interviews from the fans, cast and crew.
It was heartwarming, funny and sad knowing the show has ended. But none the less a great read!.

March 6, 2023This was soooooooo sweet, reading all these little reflections from fans who have loved the show for its whole ride, fans who have only found the show a couple of years ago, plus the main cast and so many members of the guest cast contributing about their experience was so wonderful!! I loved it, i felt very close to each person as i read their chapter. It was really great to read about the variety of people who have loved/contributed to the creation of the show, and all their journeys. It weirdly captured the genuine connection i feel i have with them all, when i watch con videos on YouTube i feel like i'm part of it even though i'm watching the panels 4 months later on the other side of the world. Still! We're united. I think because we've all enjoyed this 15 year ride the same way.

If you’re a fan of Supernatural (and by “fan,” I mean the kind of person who can recite every line from every episode while simultaneously sobbing and hugging your TV screen), then this book might be your personal holy grail. For the rest of us, it's the emotional equivalent of stepping on a Lego barefoot while being forced to watch 15 years of inside jokes that you don’t get, accompanied by sentimental fan art that feels like a level of commitment you never asked for.
This book is basically a “Hey, remember how you’ve spent the last decade-and-a-half obsessing over a show about two brothers who hunt monsters? Here’s more of that, but with extra feelings.” The first chapter? Actors crying about how much they miss the show, followed by fans crying about how much they love the actors, followed by a bizarre amount of pictures of people crying—because nothing says "legacy" like a lot of tears and photos that feel like they were taken during an awkward high school reunion.
The best part of the book (sarcasm intended) is the “heartfelt” chapters. These are penned by the actors and fans, which, if you’ve ever seen a group of Supernatural fans get together to talk about the show, you know this is basically an emotional therapy session for people who’ve been through the same kind of toxic relationship with a TV show that some people go through with exes. One chapter will have you convinced you’ve accidentally opened a shrine to the Winchester brothers, complete with candles and a tragic backstory about their epic journey of sibling rivalry, demon-hunting, and unnecessary suffering.
There are “memorable characters” (because who wouldn’t want to read yet another chapter about how much Dean’s impala is practically a third brother?) and “inspirational life lessons” (like how to literally hunt monsters in your daily life by pretending to not know what you’re doing while still making things look cool). If the show Supernatural has somehow not changed your life, then clearly, you’re just not a true fan, according to this book.
Also, the illustrations. I’ll admit, they’re nice if you’re into amateur-level fan art that looks like it came from a really intense middle school art class. But in a book that’s meant to be an official tribute to a beloved show? You’d expect maybe... I don’t know... something a little less pubescent.
Ultimately, if you're looking for an in-depth reflection on what made Supernatural groundbreaking, this is not the book for you. It’s a cloying love letter to a show that couldn’t decide if it was a gritty monster-hunting drama or a 15-year-long soap opera with an existential crisis. And this book? It does exactly what it sets out to do—remind you that you’ve spent way too much time and energy loving a show about demons, angels, and random plot twists that made zero sense. But hey, if you want more of that, with a side of nostalgia and incessant fan dedication, this book is your holy grail.
If you’re not in the Supernatural cult, reading this book is like being handed a thesaurus of inside jokes and feelings you’ll never be able to fully comprehend. But hey, if you want to join the SPN Family and have forever peace, be my guest. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

As a fan of Supernatural from episode one I was excited to come across this book. It's a beautiful tribute to the show and the fans. I love the chapters from the actors. It's amazing when you think about it how huge of an impact this show has had on everyone its touched. The fan written chapters are emotional and beautiful. Amazing photography and illustrations! This one made me laugh, made me smile, get choked up, and shed some tears. Very well done.

Such a great read for anyone who loves Supernatural! This is my first book that I have read from Lynn and I plan on reading her other books in the future!!

Rating: I didn't like it 🥲
I picked up this because I wanted to end the year on a high note and after loving Family Don't End with Blood: Cast and Fans on How Supernatural Has Changed Lives, this was a sure 5/5 star for me. Sadly, I didn't like it at all and it even pissed me off in a lot of essays, specially Jessica Manson's.
This wasn't moving or comforting like the previous one, it was full of pandering to those that enable the toxic side of the fandom. If you read this you'd think everyone on the fandom is suffering from some type of mental illness and or is LGTB+. Family don't end in blood had moving stories that were more diverse, this one only focus on fans that go to the conventions, suffer from mental illness and are gay.
I did like some essays like those written by writer Davy Perez, actress Shoshannah Stern, Rick Worthy (he played the allpha vampire), Hugo Ateo (He played Cesar in the chitters), David Haydn-Jones (Ketch) and Jensen's (although what Jensen wrote I've seen in countless of interviews).
I also didn't like that it wasn't written after the ending, because the ending is pure cr*p, I think some of the thoughts are very different now.
So, I don't recommend it not even to the fans. I'm Very disappointed.

This wasn't moving or comforting like the previous one, it was full of pandering to those that enable the toxic side of the fandom. If you read this you'd think everyone on the fandom is suffering from some type of mental illness and or is LGTB+. Family don't end in blood had moving stories that were more diverse, this one only focus on fans that go to the conventions, suffer from mental illness and are gay.
I did like some essays like those written by writer Davy Perez, actress Shoshannah Stern, Rick Worthy (he played the allpha vampire), Hugo Ateo (He played Cesar in the chitters), David Haydn-Jones (Ketch) and Jensen's (although what Jensen wrote I've seen in countless of interviews).
I also didn't like that it wasn't written after the ending, because the ending is pure cr*p, I think some of the thoughts are very different now.
So, I don't recommend it not even to the fans. I'm Very disappointed.

This book along with the first one has SO MANY meanings. These books will forever be apart of our little family, these books express so many emotions, I cried reading so many chapters. Especially Jensens, reading that he will miss Dean and reasons why, makes me sad.
Why will Jensen miss Dean? His badassery. He will miss walking into a room with all the confidence in the world and lopping off a Vampires head or throwing the ‘67 Impala (Baby) into a reverse 180. He’ll miss all of those cool things him and Jared got to do, along with the badassery. He’ll miss the humility that is also peppered into the characters.
The balance is what makes them real to the fans. You can’t just have someone who’s a badass and never breaks.
Jensen believes Deans legacy is that he never gives up. Which it is, the message “Always Keep Fighting” comes from Dean. The show carries the message that had inspired the fandom to keep fighting too, whatever fight that they’re facing.
Julies chapter was also really nice to read, about how Jensen let her take control of their sex scene, and how if she didn’t want it to be shown he would make sure it wasn’t shown. She also mentioned him covering her up in between takes. Which I thought was quite wonderful.
Supernatural will never end. The show might, but what it has built? This will never end. Besides nothing ever stays dead on supernatural.

This was exciting, heartwarming, and a must read for every Supernatural Fan. I've been out of the fandom for a little while and this inspired me to return! The stories were wonderful and really captured why Supernatural appeals to so many people. The book features stories from actors, crew, fans, and artists inspired by the legacy of the show. The different perspectives gave a lot of different insights with the same basic message: this fandom is unique, it's touched a wide range of people, and it's opened a lot of doors in the TV industry because of its unique characters who have a range of abilities, sexualities, genders, and personalities.
