The late mayor’s super-vampire project should have died along with him, but now, new vampire-like creatures are cropping up…and killing the people of Hazel’s small mountain town.
With Corwin missing more often than not, Hazel’s left with only a hot werewolf and her dead sister’s ghost to help her. So she turns to the definitely-not-human librarian, who expects her to return the favor by paying an unnamed price he’s coming to collect in thirteen days…if her quest for the truth doesn’t kill her first.
The answers she seeks may be tied to the mysterious lake in the mountains, but only Hazel can see it, and when she finally traverses there in person, she finds something dark and deadly in the valley.
Something that might be connected to all the negative energy suffusing the town…or feeding it.

This is the third book in the Creatures of the Midwest series, and the action is ramping up. There are a few secrets revealed in this one, and there a few new paths that need to be taken. I loved the “new” powers that Hazel discovered, and I am interested to know more about the new characters. To be truthful, I liked Corwin but not much before, but in this one, I think I am beginning to like him a whole lot better. This is my favorite so far of the series, and I’m very intrigued to see where we are going to go next; there are just so many threads to explore! Highly recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Hazel Goode’s dead sister Willow’s ghost is bound to fire witch Hazel on the physical plane. Only Hazel can actually see her. Now Hazel and Willow are talking about her death and how she had come home while she still had a little time left and could ask Corwin Pitts, the sexy 269-year-old vampire, to change her so she wouldn’t just die. The bad guys wanted her vampire blood to make her part of Mayor Stevens massive plan to create what he called “super vampires.” She knew Brock was up to something so she did a spell to preserve her soul, and she told the rest of her story of how she remains bound on Earth through the ring Hazel wears. Christina Steele had attached Willow’s soul to the touchstone through a powerful spell and made sure Hazel received the ring. Throughout the story, Hazel kept feeling she was being watched, yet could not see anyone there. But as the story finished, a dark figure leaped out to attack Hazel and, holding her face under a muddy puddle so she could not breathe, bit her in the back of the neck! Would her fire magic flare to life to save her from this vampire zombie?
As with the other excellent books in this series, so much is happening. Hazel definitely has her hands full this time! The late mayor’s super-vampire project should have died out, but it obviously hasn’t. And seeking help from the definitely-not-human librarian, is a very risky path to follow! This may be more than she can handle this time!
Book three starts off three hours after book two ends. While Hazel and Willow are sharing things, a new vamp zombie appears and attacks Hazel; she incapacitates her. They will take her to Dr. Nash to work her magic. Meanwhile, things continue to spin out of control in the town. Her vamp is nowhere to be found and ignores her calls. Sammy and she go on an adventure to the mountains and lake, which leads to more questions. She has other encounters with the Librarian that does not end on a good note. The new vamp will not be a good factor between Hazel, Eric, and Corwin.
Her abilities continue to grow, she learns the secrets of the lake and cave, she has more responsibilities to juggle, she sends Willow on an adventure to find answers, she will need to use the Bloode tome again, the Brotherhood pops back up with a new weapon, she will share a new bond with Corwin, and so much more occurs in this part of their journey! Hazel has become the new savior of the town to many. What will happen when Corwin finds out she went on a date with Sammy? These questions and more will be answered in book three…only to leave more at the ending! These books keep getting better and better…I wonder where it will all end?
Hazel is finding more out about herself and her powers. Is it the town that is bringing things to the surface. Corwin is MIA and turns up with secrets. The mysterious lake calls her and uncovers more about her and the town. It seems she was meant to be here. Vamp zombies! Where are they coming from and are they related to the experients that nearly ended Hazel's life in book 1. So much going on in this book and the ending....yikes I need book 4 now.
Wow! Bombshell after bombshell are doled out in this installment. If you’ve read the prior two books you’ll get some answers and a whole slew of new questions. If you haven’t what are you waiting for? This series is a whimsical, sarcastically funny tale on the paranormal/urban fantasy /mystery worlds. I don’t know where this journey is leading but I know for sure I wanna be a part of the ride!.

Hazel Goode has found she is a protector of a supernatural lake in the Crazy Mountains of Montana. The lake only appears to her, and under certain conditions. She has bound her sister Willow's ghost and is trying to deal with her attraction too both the vampire Corwin and a werewolf.
I fell in love with the characters. Hazel is a gutsy woman and she is funny too. I can't put the book down. I will be waiting anxiously for book number4!
