What could possibly be worse than dying at the hands of an evil God?
Becoming his obsession...

A Dark Gods Romance, Books 1-3.

“I can tear your throat out right here,” he said, his voice a hushed whisper of threats and spilled blood. “I could kill you a thousand different ways where you sit.”
The nail cut deeper. Blood beaded, then spilled down my front, over my breasts. I choked on a whimper.
“Now tell me everything.”

1. Prince Poison
Few knew Valissa's secret but it already carried a death toll. One.
If the Gods ever discovered what she was, they would capture and flay her alive.

But in the land of Gods and Monsters, no secret stays hidden for long.
Lissa—drunk on the high of a midnight party that's rife with mysterious pirates—gets too close to one of the pirates, who turns out to have secrets of his own.
Jasper is no pirate. He is a servant of the Gods. And the moment she touches him, she steals his power.
He kidnaps Lissa, and he's taking her to one of the most brutal Gods in all the lands ... He's taking her to Prince Poison.
Prince Poison's mere touch kills and his cruelty is said to stretch beyond even the darkest pits of Lissa's soul. But when she's standing in front of this fearsome God, ready to face her gruesome fate, the Prince might see more in her than she ever thought possible.

2. Captive
Valissa is an abomination among Gods and Monsters.
She's cursed with the unexplained ability to steal power from the children of the Gods. It's a curse worthy of death, but her fate is much worse than that.
Prince Poison, the cruelest of them all, keeps her captive in the stardust palace, where she's forced to train her abilities into something that terrifies her, while evading the malicious interest of those around her.

What's worse than holding the interest of a God whose touch kills and whose lips enchant?
Becoming his captive...

3. Phantom
Valissa’s death toll is on the rise:
One—before she was stolen away to the cruel Prince Poison.
Seven—under the Prince’s malicious watch.
The worst part? Valissa just doesn’t care anymore, not about the lives of those she doesn’t know when her own life is falling apart all around her.

Ava’s not speaking to her. Jasper pushes her in training to the point of exhaustion. And though Valissa does everything he wants, the Prince grows distant.
Valissa finds the closest thing to a friend in the mysteriously dark stranger who haunts her in the stardust palace. Damianos; a God or aniel she most definitely knows better than to trust.
In the Land of Gods, is it really ‘better the devil you know’? And what about when the devil you don’t know is just so damn intoxicating?

What’s worse than being the prisoner of a God?
Abandoning all hopes of freedom.

...

Now that I have read all 6 books which are all very short, I can review finally.

This is a story of a girl who believed herself a monster and had a special power she had to hide. After accidentally using her power on a guy who was only in her village for a night, she is taken away from everything she's ever known, along with her one and only friend.

The story continues as she meets Prince Poison who is an actual god after is taken to a palace where she encounters other gods.

This is an inventive and lavish tale of gods and their cruelties. It's interwoven with characters that are mostly pawns to the gods, but Valissa is more than she seems.

While others try and force her to do what they want or try to keep her in the dark, she learns how and why she's the way she is.

It's a wonderful little series with books that can be read in an hour or so each on KU.

*I received an eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Prince Poison is the first book in the New-Adult fantasy series Gods and Monsters. It’s a short length novella but it did left me wanting for more. I loved the concept, the setting, and the gods mythology. The heroine Valissa is a strong heroine with a deadly secret. It’s just the start of the series but I already fell in love with our anti-hero Prince Poison.

Lissa lives on an island Zwayk. Her mother sacrificed her life to protect Lisa’s dark secret and she currently lives in her brother’s house. She works as an entertainer. When a new ship docks to her island, Lisa and her best-friend attends the midnight Party where they meet the pirate named Jasper. In her drunken stupor, when Lissa accidentally touches him she realizes that he’s an aniel, the child of a god who can detect anomalies like her. As soon Lissa sucks the power out of Jasper with her touch, it’s too late. She soon gets captured by them and he takes her to the Isle of Gods where Prince Poison lives. He’s rumored to be the cruelest of them all and Lissa knew her survival chances are pretty low but she didn’t know the Prince Poison has other plans for her.

I enjoyed Lissa’s character. I’m glad she’s not the perfect strong character who doesn’t fear anything. She stood strong even though she was pretty scared inside. Prince Poison is a mysterious character with a lot of anti-hero vibes. I seriously can’t wait to know more about him. The secondary characters were also good. I liked both Jasper, and Lissa’s best friend Ava.

The plot was engaging throughout. I devoured it in one sitting. The pace was perfect and I enjoyed the unique gods concept. I would love to know more about the other gods in this series. The book was written in Lissa’s POV. The author’s writing was easy to follow. The world she created was interesting and I want to explore more of it.

Overall, I absolutely loved this novella! It was a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to jump into the next book because this one was ended with a cliffhanger.

It’s the cleanest Quinn Blackbird although there are 1-2 explicit scenes towards the end. Primarily, the chemistry is not strong in my opinion. The heroine is attracted to two gods. I’m not sure I am convinced of either of the gods’ interest in the heroine. It also feels longer than usual because it is 3 books in one. I like the medieval-ish setting, but I feel like Dark Fae is better, which I can’t help but compare it to you. In fact, Jasper and Ava had a bit more chemistry than the main leads even though their romance is barely developed or mentioned. I also hope something more develops with the monster bit other than that is a part of her she compartmentalized…

My second read through of the series, and I can safely say that box-set binging is the way to go. You pick up on so much more when you don't break up the books. The gothic tone with just a touch of madness is just on the right side of what could be dangerous territory given it's a "dark romance". I still say it's the ungodly lovechild of Trudi Canavan's Priestess of the White and Pirates of the Caribbean, but with a whole load more darkness.

The recap: Valissa is a girl living on a far-flung island in a world where Gods are real and even the nice ones are only relatively so. When she accidentally takes power from a servant of the Gods, she comes to the attention of one named Prince Poison. He's as nice as his name implies, as devastatingly beautiful as he is terrible. Lissa is pulled into his deadly web of cruelty and kindness, and along with her friend Ava has to navigate the dangers of the Palace of the Gods. But the Prince isn't the only one with an eye on her; the Gods do love their power-plays. Lissa may be a more important piece in their game... Or maybe more than a piece entirely. Who can tell the true feelings of the wicked and wonderful Gods?

I keep thinking of this more like a dark triad romance: there are plenty of twisted characters. But there should be no fear that the heroine isn't up to taking the Gods on at their own game. Valissa is no innocent damsel. She's tough and clever and devious in her own way as she wrestles with her monsters within and without. That's why this story works: she's a deeply flawed, almost frightening person in her own right, hopping between relatable and repelling in her attitudes.

The "relationships" unfold in an eerie way that screams gothic. There's something raw and brutal about Prince Poison's interactions with Lissa, but also something more subtle underneath. Damianos and Jasper's enigmatic smirks will have you guessing at motives, and Ava's the nightmare BFF who's torn between her righteousness and her loyalty. Their chemistry, be it friendly or fiery, is amazingly tense.

Psychology aside, the world-building is such a big draw. There's so much Godly lore and creepy atmosphere to the setting. There's an entire pantheon going about their devious business, not to mention a host of aniels and mortals. Considering the majority of the action occurs inside the Palace of the Gods, we learn a whole load. No, really, world-building like this is so satisfying to read because it makes sense.

Being part one of two (of the boxsets), it ends on a cliffhanger. I dare you not to want to find out what happens next.

Holy moly! This is like the ungodly lovechild of Trudi Canavan's Priestess of the White and Pirates of the Caribbean. I never knew I needed this. It may only be a relatively short introductory novella, but there is a whole load more to unpick than first meets the eye.

Valissa lives upon a far-flung island, either toiling in her brother's house or playing hostess to the visiting "traders" when a ship comes in to dock. But one nocturnal revel turns sour when she accidentally reveals the secret of one of their piratical guests... And her own. Instead of slaying her where she stands, he takes her to the isle of the Gods themselves to be presented to his master, Prince Poison. In a world where even the benign Gods are cruel, what chance does Lissa stand in the face of the cruelest of them all?

I cannot get over the atmosphere this short serial-starter creates. It's tense and dangerous, full of magic of the darkest kind. Characters and places are vividly written, splashes of vibrant colour setting the scene in a mix somewhere between ancient mythology and the 1800s. It shouldn't work, but it does. Some things don't initially make sense, but explanations come in dribs and drabs that flesh out the world and Lissa's character.

About Lissa. Oh dang, do I love me a good brave-coward character. Yes, that is a contradictory description, but know this: she's obviously the "hero" and yet she doesn't run into situations full of confidence and vigor. Her anxieties feel realistic, not overblown or completely forgotten about. And her mental state, well... This could be interesting.

Beware the cliffhanger at the end of this episode. It is an introduction, episode one, so is short on actual story. I devoured it so fast I nearly got mental indigestion. It raises so many questions. No romance yet, but if the tone is anything to go by it's not going to be your sickly sweet Happily Ever After...

Valissa has a deadly secret which is discovered and finds herself and her friend Ava taken to the dangerous God Prince Poison. Expecting the God to kill her she is shocked to find the Prince has other plans for her. She is to train her ablilites and grow and become stronger. Her relationship with Ava is damaged and her new relationship with Prince Poison is constantly changing. That's not even mentioning her mysterious visitor Damianos. There are plenty of secrets and lies and Valissa is not sure who she can really trust.
This box set includes the first three books in the Gods and Monsters series.
Prince Poison
Captive
Phantom
These books are dark romance and the author is able to draw you in with all the twists and turns and keeps you guessing. I love the characters and how they are constantly changing and some becoming stronger, especially all the developing relationships. These books end on cliff hangers and will definitely leave you wanting more.

So, probably not the best book to pick up after an epic trilogy, but dear lord this wasn't an enjoyable read for me.

Gah this was so bland, writing was ineffectual, often repetitve, and I couldn't care at all about the 'monster' within, it wasn't intriguing enough.

I learned from this that novella's have no place in fantasy reads, we want books to sink our teeth into, not read a drawn out not going anyway novella that didn't engage enough for me to want to read on in the 'series'. I get why it's a series too, the books are all in KU, so the story suffers for the want of coin and page reads versus a rocking plot and fleshed out characters.

Sadly this wasn't an interesting read.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author has a unique writing style and a way that desscribes the world in the book, making me feel like Iwas actually there. It was a very interesting take on gods and magical beings that reminded me a bit of Stephanie Garber's Caravel series. I think my only complaint about this book was that it ended all too quickly, but it did make me eager to see what happens next.

THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON THE WHOLE SERIES.

#villainessheroine #lackingwarmth

LONG STORY SHORT, I CAN'T SEEM TO ENJOY QUINN BLACKBIRD'S EARLIER STORIES. THIS ONE WAS DARK, BUT THE CHARACTERS (PERSONALLY) WERE SELFISH AND UNLIKEABLE. I've often had trouble liking Blackbird's heroines, but Valissa was no better than the evil Gods that made sport of lives. I've never read a villainess heroine, and I can't say I'll ever attempt one again - if not by accident. Just didn't like it.

Also, Gods and Monsters has a same tone as The Prince's Prisoner, except G&M has a better ending. The plot itself was interesting, even if I didn't quite like how Valissa oscillated between two men in the story...I don't even know what she's thinking, but one thing's for certain, she's goddamned selfish and self-serving. Just to be clear, if we got to choose one male, I would be shipping Valissa and Phantom, because their chemistry felt more real.

OVERALL the plot was intriguing, all that mystery to be solved but I couldn't care for the characters. I've begun to realize that apart from the two Dark Fae stories that I enjoyed, Quinn Blackbird's other stories lacked warmth and heart. It was mostly...threats, evilness and cruelty. I won't call it love...but something...other. I certainly didn't feel all gushy inside after reading this. Valissa just became a true monster at the end. If you enjoy that kind of stories, with a heroine who couldn't care less if she killed someone else in order to live, then by all means, this might be your type of story.

Before I begin my review for Prince Poison (Gods and Monsters #1) by Quinn Blackbird, I would personally like to thank the author, the publishers and Booksprouts for the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.

A world ruled by ruthless Gods and their evil spawn, a forbidden power cursing through her veins and a darkness standing by inside her soul, Valissa’s life is about to take a turn. Unwilling use of her forbidden powers forces Valissa away from her home and towards the island of the Gods. What fate will await her when she meets Prince Poison?

Prince Poison features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Gods
○ Monsters
○ Demi Gods
○ Forbidden powers
○ Evil Gods
○ Captive

My overall rating for Prince Poison is…

4 Stars!

Quick and straight to the point, Prince Poison was an insightful and alluring introduction to the novella series. Engaging and thought provoking, this book left me wanting more! Luckily, the series is available through KU! Though there is no romance in this first novella, the series promises a dark, enemies to lovers love affair. I’m anticipating smut (oh god, please be smut!) and a case of Stockholm syndrome.

Not sure if i’m just not in the mood or if the story is just a bit boring for my tastes.

Not a big fan of anyone in the story. The banter is nonexistent between the FMC and the MMC. I also feel bad for the FMC while reading the story as Ava,her bestie is kind of a bitch. What is the purpose of her role in the story? Kinda wish she’d get killed off or something. I find Jasper, the side character much more interesting than the MMC, Prince Poison, and wish he liked Valissa, the FMC, instead of Ava so it annoys me when he conveys affection or a protective instinct for A instead of V. I do kind of like that Prince Poison likes the taste of V’s blood but not enough to keep going.

So abandoning this one. I usually like the author’s stories so might try another.

What a surprise

Man, I got to the end of the book and couldn't believe it was over I was so engrossed in the story. It seemed as soon as I had Lissa figured out, the author added another element to her psyche and background that further developed the complexity of this character. It really makes me wonder where she is going to go in the next book. I'm still on the fence with her so-called "best friend" Ava. I guess we'll see.

Valissa has a secret which has already cost her and if any one else finds out her secret it could cost them there life as well as hers. A mysterious ships docks in the harbour were she lives they throw a midnight party to welcome the pirates but little does she know they are not pirates and she meet jasper but her friend comes and gives him a kiss and when LIssa goes to pull her friend off she transfer his power to her friend. Jasper and his men capture them and take them to the land of the Gods to meet prince poison and he is the worst God of them all just his touch can kill you. I loved this book and the characters are great I do like Jasper character will be interesting to see what happens next to valissa and friend as well. I am loving the story line it’s not a book I would normally read but I am so glad I have because I have really really enjoyed it and I now need the next book to see what happens next. I would most definitely recommend you read this book fantastic book by an amazing author

It’s a very short book but quite enjoyable.
In few pages the author created an interesting world full of gods and monsters, so well defined that I had no trouble to suspend my disbelief and feel like I lived in such a world near Lissa and Ava, sailing towards my fate and Prince Poison.
In this world not all Gods are good, some are dark and malevolent. Near the Gods live the aniels, being created by the gods themselves. Then there are the vilas, mere humans, and the avksy, humans with some sort of powers that are abominations in the eyes of the gods.
Lissa, our main character, is an avsky, or is she not? is she something more?
I’ll found out eventually as I’ll read for sure the next five books in the series.

Dark, interesting, God's, a girl with powers.

Lissa is a girl with secret powers. She can steal your powers & give them to someone else. All she has to do is hold your hand & someone else's to transfer them. She knew from a tragic childhood that she was different. Her mother died trying to protect her. She didn't realize how easy it could happen. She also has a darkness inside her that makes her think of doing horrible things. It causes her to have no emotions sometimes, when she should. She makes a mistake & her secret is revealed. Now she is on a journey that may end in death. Find out what happens. Can't wait to read the next one!

Spacing!!!!

For the love of a duck!!!! Can someone please tell these people how to space their writing!!?? It has become a regular habit and it is driving me crazy. So I don't know if your story was good 🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷
You know why? Because you spaces it at least three spaces between small thoughts or actions . Its a continues action, thought or scene. Not... Not..not ...not a.new paragraph that indicates a different action or a pause in an action. Or a speaking person .even when different speaking parts we do not space three or more spaces. It jerks me out of the story and makes me refer to the " three spaces above" to reconnect my thought process. 👎

I really enjoyed this premise of a book. What's not to love about gods and a world ruled by them. I found its a little slow to begin but once the story got building, it was hard to put it down! And that ending made me need book 2! Klarissa has a way with words that is intriguing and highly detailed. The world's she builds has everything you'd want in a fantasy world!

This was a great read. I thought the story was very well written and flowed well. The story kept me glued to the pages to see how everything would turn out. Wow, I'm so glad I pushed through the first book in this series. At first it was slow and boring, being overly descriptive in a way that felt like empty words trying to fill a page. Thank goodness that seemed to go away with the second book as the story progressed.
I was hooked! Definitely go with the boxed set so you don't have to wait.
