Blue, Barry, and Pancakes are best friends, but sometimes friends make mistakes.
One day, when the gang goes to the beach, Barry and Pancakes lose Blue’s beloved beach ball. They come up with a plan to get it back, but things go way off course. Now, these pals will have to go inside a giant whale’s stomach, crash a pool party on an alien spaceship, and survive Duckzilla’s volcanic birthday bash if they ever hope to see Blue’s beach ball again!
I barely just brought this book over to my 3 yr old nephew and already he wants to read it every night- Blue and Barry and Pancakes... blueberry pancakes? nooo! (I can hear his little voice in my head🥰)
Blue (the worm like character), Barry (the frogish one) and Pancakes (the bunny) are the best of friends. One day they decide to go to the beach but Barry and Pancakes can't think of what to do there. Blue likes to collect things and he brought a beach ball from his collection but not to play with. When Barry and Pancakes play with it anyway, one event leads to another and they find themselves in an adventure to find the beach ball!
I dunno if you're familiar with the Mo Willems series with Elephant and Piggy (they're fantastic, go check them out if you've never seen them!)- this book mimicks that style a little bit, but like on steroids😂 It's sort of a kid's graphic novel that's really easy to follow, silly, fun and full of heart. We also loved that after the story is over, the authors take the time to introduce each character on their own spread detailing their likes/dislikes and talents.
I know that 50% of my nephew's favor is based on how I read it (I should totally be a kid's book audio narrator, just saying🤪) but these authors made it super easy for me and I just know this one's going to stay by his bedside for quite a while.
HUGE thank u to @01firstsecond for sending this one my way, u definitely earned me some auntie points!
Not my favorite, but I am not the target age group.
Blue is a worm, Barry is a frog, and Pancakes is a giant bunny. They are besties who live in a treehouse together. Barry and Pancakes take Blue's ball and play keep away, even though Blue doesn't want them to. Then a whale eats the ball, then the trio find the whale and climb inside his mouth, then they are sneezed out and land on an airplane, then they fall into a volcano... In the end, they return safe and sound, having mostly learned their lesson. Very silly.
There need to be more easy juvenile graphic novels, so I would still recommend. But there are others I would recommend first.
This was such a fun book! Blue, Barry and Pancakes are three hilarious friends who are the beach one day and lose Blue's beachball. They then go on a crazy adventure to get it back. This is a great read for new independent readers and kids who love wacky stories! My 7 year old is excited for the next one
Lots of high energy and goofy fun. Comic, cartoon sensibility. The choice of words seems driven by the rather hackneyed comic sensibility - alien abduction, lots of parties, keep away, exploding volcanoes and pigs flying airplanes - rather than by the kinds of phonics kids beginning readers can easily decode. (saucer) There isn't much nuance here, and keep-away really is a terrible game, but many kids will be drawn to the bright colors, simple speech bubbles, and constant action.
That was a fun easy graphic novel. This is great for newly-independent readers just getting into graphic novels. The text is easy to read, there's not a lot of it, and there's repetition in words. The art is fun and colorful without being too detailed or busy. The story is cute and fun. I think any adventure with the three friends will be great. (Read a digital ARC from Netgalley.)
Barry and Pancakes lose Blue's favorite beach ball, and soon they are on a wild quest to get it back--through a whale, into a spaceship, down a volcano, and more.
Lots of nonsensical adventure and humor here. Another graphic novel series designed for fans of Narwhal and Jelly, Squidding Around, and Pizza and Taco. Ideal for first and second graders.
This book is super cute for kids! The illustrations are really fun to look at, and the story is ridiculous so it will be able to keep their attention pretty easily. I also loved the lessons it was teaching. Hopefully I’ll be able to read more of these books in the future!
This one was VERY popular with Bridget (age 8 ), Dryden (age 6) and Cal (almost 4). They particularly loved the final pages that give little profiles of the three main characters, and I was definitely reprimanded for not bringing along book 2!
Super fun new graphic novel series, for fans of Narwhal & Jelly or Pea, Bee, & Jay. Zany adventure ensues after Blue’s beach ball is swallowed by a whale. Love how the characters are explained in the end, careful readers will notice a clue to book #2 in Pancake’s room!
What did I just read? It's chaotic and all over the place but not in a fun (IMO) way. It feels like it's trying to harness the energy of Narwhal and Jelly and the wordplay of Pea, Bee, and Jay but falls flat. At least Pea, Bee and Jay's names make sense. Will likely not be purchasing for my school library.
This beginner comic has the manic energy of an especially hyper cartoon. No real story here, just lots of high-octane wackiness. This one would be a good recommend for reluctant readers.
It’s got simple language and is silly enough that young readers will enjoy it. It’s not the best writing though and the premise feels like it’s copying Pea, Bee, and Jay but it’s not nearly as good.
I have a feeling weaker readers will love this book and be able to enjoy graphic books as much as their friends. Younger readers will be highly amused.
