In summer, the nights may be shorter, but they have bigger teeth.
Casey has spent nearly twenty years tracking down the creatures that have been murdering their way across the upper Midwest. As summer begins to wind down, he's running out of time to find them before winter takes hold and the things that hunt in the dark sleep out the cold. This year is different, though. They've been sloppy, and Casey is closer than he's been in over a decade.
He's all set to close in on them - that is, until he meets Max. She's the resourceful manager of a dingy motel, and Casey's way into the tiny town hiding a pair of nightmares. She's the perfect partner for finishing the hunt. The problem with Max is that she's alive, and the things Casey hunts want her dead.
Casey will need to decide what's more dangerous - hunting the creatures alone, or having an ally along who he cares about too much. He'll need to decide soon; if they get away this time, he may never find them again.
M.M. Perry has written and published thirteen books. By day, she is an expert cat and dog wrangler, a nacho connoisseur, and writer of fantasy, science fiction and horror. By night… she does the same things. She is hard at work getting her first science fiction series edited and published. She’s equally busy teaching her pug to sing along to the Muppets. She is known for saying, “No task involving a pug is impossible, just highly improbable.”
This book surprised me. First of all it is very well written. Surprises abound and I love the folk lore. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves extreme details in the story. Very, very entertaining. I hope another book is written in this vein by the author.
I discovered about a third of the way in, that it’s not really my type of book - Wendigo’s are really creepy. But it was very suspenseful and gripping. The f word was used a number of times by one character. I gave it a great rating because I was glued to it till I discovered the horror part; then I stopped reading. But it’s well-written. I received a free copy of this book.
This book is good, creepy, definitely on the horror side, but oh so good. This book is not predictable at all, making it a breath of fresh air...which is funny because a big part of this book talked about a horrible rotting stench. This book is well written. Information is reviled in a way that you get the wow factor often. The level of emotions the characters feel and the emotions readers feel for the characters is impressive, especially with it being a shorter book. There was a level of sadness I wasn't prepared for, but it made so much sense once there.
My only compliant would be the amount of time that actually passed. Most of the book takes place over three or four days. It felt like it should have been a lot longer with the level of relationships that developed, specifically between Casey and Max.
I would suggest this book to anyone looking for a good mystery with a big helping of folklore type horror.
I wasn't sure what kind of creature I expected but I was drawn into the mystery of the storyline from the beginning. The characters were intriguing and kept me wanting to learn more about them. Once I learned what creature was actually causing all kinds of trouble I was impressed. I just didn't expect it. This was a great creature/horror book with a fantastic storyline. I don't want to give anything away but I will say to read it. I am certainly glad I did.
I liked that although the monster wasn't as uncommon as readers would think, that they added characteristic to it to make some differences then legends mentioned. I would have liked more on the three main characters as the book felt rushed and been nice to have their pasts shown up to give reasons why they act as they did.
Weird in a good way. For a large portion of the book, the reader has no idea what Casey is hunting. The descriptions are detailed yet vague. Faster read than I expected
This was a really good book. It wasn't quite what I expected when I started it. I was surprised by the creature. The book did move fast though and constantly had something happening. This was a lot of fun to read.
This is not a genre that I usually read but this was exceptionally well written. The last couple of chapters felt slightly rushed but that didn't take away anything from the book as a whole. A very enjoyable book. Will read more books by this author. Recommended.
the book was enjoyable. i loved how well written and straight forward it was with the details. there were moments where i would question the main characters behaviors. but it made sense in a certain chapter. i did have an idea on what it would be about in that prologue chapter. BUT! when i hit that portion of the book where it starts to unfold, that’s when i was like “oooohhh…wait…what?”. i won’t deny, as mentioned earlier, i was confused by the main characters behaviors because i was had a completely different idea. i loved how it flowed too, it wasn’t choppy, rushed, and repetitive.
I really loved reading this novel. In addition to being a solid entry into the horror genre, I found there was an added dimension added that I really appreciated.
There are a lot of strong elements in this novel: - the pacing is excellent. While there is a prologue to set up the horror element, the story proper unfolds gradually, but this is a strength. - the world-building is very well handled, with an interesting take on a myth that has not been overdone in the genre. - the character-building is stellar. All of the characters are intriguing, and even minor characters feel complex and human.
There are some unanswered questions, and I definitely feel that this novel could either stand on its own or kick of a series - at the author's pleasure.
I found this to be a really original story, very well-written, and a joy to read. I cannot wait to read more from this author!
I got this book as a free download because the description intrigued me. What I discovered was a true surprise. This is a very good book. You know there is something horrifying out there killing people but the author doesn't let you know what it is until late in the book, thus ramping up the suspense. The characters are likable. I especially liked Max. She is the sort of woman I would want to meet if I was younger and single. This is a horror story but it's a horror story with heart. I found myself rooting for Casey and Max to "make it work." There are hints and suggestions from the start that something is not quite normal about Casey and that Max knows more than she lets on. I'll say no more lest I give away too much. This author knows how to write. I would read more of her work.
This not being my usual type of book to read, I wasn't really sure what to expect.
Voro is well-written, suspenseful and exciting. The build up to finding out who or what was killing people was excellent - my mind was all over the place trying to figure it out. And I loved the ending - those last couple of pages leave you thinking "is he a......?" (say no more, no spoilers from me!)
I'm looking forward to reading more by this author
This is a well written book with a story line I didn't expect. I was thinking it to be another werewolf story and was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be something entirely different. The main character Casey is a very likeable person, Max is someone I would like to know and Anne is someone I would like to kick in butt! I highly recommend reading Voro. I look forward to reading other offerings by Ms Perry.
I really didn't know where this story was headed at first but the author kept dropping little hints that kept me intrigued. Great ending that leaves an opening for a second book but still gave me happy vibes! More, please!
Definitely a different take on the wendigo. I truly loved the author’s way of storytelling and the characters were amazing!!!! Never wanted the story to end. Please read this book!!!!
It was packed full mystery, deceit, misery and sarcasm. Looking forward to reading another one of his books and will and add him to my favorite author list.
I was shocked by how good this book was. It’s horror, but not gory horror. Is consider it more suspense. I loved Casey, and his back story is so tragic. This was a great book.
